  • The purpose of this study was to perform a literature review of short implants in the posterior maxilla and to assess the influence of different factors on implant success rate. A comprehensive search was conducted to retrieve articles published from 2004 to 2015 using short dental implants with lengths less than 10 mm in the posterior maxilla with at least one year of follow-up. Twenty-four of 253 papers were selected, reviewed, and produced the following results. (1) The initial survival rate of short implants in the posterior maxilla was not related to implant width, surface, or design; however, the cumulative success rate of rough-surface short implants was higher than that of machined-surface implants especially in performance of edentulous dental implants of length <7 mm. (2) While bone augmentation can be used for rehabilitation of the atrophic posterior maxilla, short dental implants may be an alternative approach with fewer biological complications. (3) The increased crown-to-implant (C/I) ratio and occlusal table (OT) values in short dental implants with favorable occlusal loading do not seem to cause peri-implant bone loss. Higher C/I ratio does not produce any negative influence on implant success. (4) Some approaches that decrease the stress in posterior short implants use an implant designed to increase bone-implant contact surface area, providing the patient with a mutually protected or canine guidance occlusion and splinting implants together with no cantilever load. The survival rate of short implants in the posterior edentulous maxilla is high, and applying short implants under strict clinical protocols seems to be a safe and predictable technique.

  • In this study the Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) sensor onboard the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) sensor onboard the Global Change Observation Mission-Water (GCOM-W1) based soil moisture retrievals were revised to obtain better accuracy of soil moisture and higher data acquisition rate over East Asia. These satellite-based soil moisture products are revised against a reference land model data set, called Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), using Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) matching and regression approach. Since MIRAS sensor is perturbed by radio frequency interferences (RFI), the worst part of soil moisture retrieval, East Asia, constantly have been undergoing loss of data acquisition rate. To overcome this limitation, the threshold of RFI, DQX, and composite days were suggested to increase data acquisition rate while maintaining appropriate data quality through comparison of land surface model data set. The revised MIRAS and AMSR2 products were compared with in-situ soil moisture and land model data set. The results showed that the revising process increased correlation coefficient values of SMOS and AMSR2 averagely 27% 11% and decreased the root mean square deviation (RMSD) decreased 61% and 57% as compared to in-situ data set. In addition, when the revised products' correlation coefficient values are calculated with model data set, about 80% and 90% of pixels' correlation coefficients of SMOS and AMSR2 increased and all pixels' RMSD decreased. Through our CDF-based revising processes, we propose the way of mutual supplementation of MIRAS and AMSR2 soil moisture retrievals.

  • The non-ionic surfactant (NIS) Tween 80 was evaluated for its ability to influence invitro cumulative gas production, dry matter digestibility, cellulolytic enzyme activities, anaerobic microbial growth rates, and adhesion to substrates by mixed rumen microorganisms on rice straw, alfalfa hay, cellulose filter paper and tall fescue hay. The addition of NIS Tween 80 at a level of 0.05% increased significantly (P<0.05) in vitro DM digestibility, cumulative gas production, microbial growth rate and cellulolytic enzyme activity from all of substrates used in this study. In vitro cumulative gas production from the NIS-treated substrates; rice straw, alfalfa hay, filter paper and tall fescue hay was significantly (P<0.05) improved by 274.8, 235.2, 231.1 and 719.5% compared with the control, when substrates were incubated for 48 hr in vitro. The addition of 0.05% NIS Tween 80 to cultures growing on alfalfa hay resulted in a significant increase in CMCase (38.1%), xylanase (121.4%), Avicelase (not changed) and amylase (38.2%) activities after 36 h incubation. These results indicated that the addition of 0.05% Tween 80 could greatly stimulate the release of some kinds of cellulolytic enzymes without decreasing cell growth rate in contrast to trends reported with aerobic microorganism. Our SEM observation showed that NIS Tween. 80 did not influence the microbial adhesion to substrates used in the study. Present data clearly show that improved gas production, DM digestibility and cellulolytic enzyme activity by Tween 80 is not due to increased bacterial adhesion on the substrates.

  • Objectives : This study looked at the effects of chronic IPV on suicide ideation among married women in the country. Methods : This study used data from the five-year-old Korea Welfare Panel and analyzed using questions about verbal and physical violence, depression and suicide ideation that were investigated every year. Age, education, and economic levels, drinking, religion, chronic disease, satisfaction with family relationship, satisfaction with social relationship, were included as variables. Results : The five-year cumulative score of verbal violence had a statistically significant effect on the depressive symptom, and the relative risk was 1.180. The relative risk of five-year-old cumulative score of verbal violence in suicidal ideation was 1.276, and it was also significant even if they exclude the effects of depressive symptom. On the other hand, the five-year cumulative score of physical violence was found to have no significant impact on suicide ideation if they excluded the effects of depressive symptom. Conclusions : Unlike previous studies, this study found that chronic verbal IPVs increase suicide ideation, even though they do not contain effects of depression. Such findings suggest that intervention in IPV in married women may help reduce the nation's suicide rate.

  • The hydrolysis of organic solid waste, such as sludge, is the rate-limiting step of the anaerobic digestion. The longer rate-limiting step lead to decrease of treatment efficiency and increase hydraulic retention time and anaerobic digester. Therefore, the pre-treatment has been applied for accelerating the hydrolysis step. This study was investigated the effects of pre-treatment of waste activated sludge using ultrasonic and alkaline integrated treatment simultaneously. The results showed the cumulative methane production and the methane production rate increased while the lag phase decreased. Therefore ultrasonic and alkaline integrated pre-treatment of waste activated sludge resulted in acceleration of hydrolysis step in anaerobic digestion.

  • Operating conditions for reduction of membrane fouling in treatment of dissolved organic matter by UF membrane process were investigated by pilot-scale plant using various operating conditions. As inlet pressure increased, increament of transmembrane pressure and flux decline were faster. The reason was due to the increase in adsorption of dissolved organic matter and the development of cake layer compression on the membrane surface. When efficient pressure (the difference of pressure between backwash and transmembrane pressures) was high, small amount of pollutant was retained on the membrane surface. When backwash was frequently conducted, low concentration of pollutant was maintained in recycling water. Therefore, backwash could be efficiently conducted with high efficient pressure and high frequency. Fouling rate was correlated with backwash and inlet pressures, recovery rate and cumulative permeated volume. Among the operating parameters backwash pressure was most closely related to fouling rate and inlet pressure was next to backwash pressure. It seems that the fouling was strongly related to pressure which leads to the cake layer compression and adsorption of dissolved organic matter.

  • In this paper, I propose an adaptive OFDM CP length algorithm for in PLC systems for smart grid. The proposed scheme calculates the channel delay information at the CP controller of the receiver by taking correlation between a received data frame and the following delayed one. The CP controller, immediately, feeds back the channel delay information to the transmitter. Then, the transmitter adapts CP length for next data frame. As an impulsive noise model, Middleton Class A interference model was employed. The performance is evaluated in terms of packet data rate, cumulative packet data rate, and bit error rate (BER). The simulation results showed data gain (which is the amount of the reduced bits) gets larger as the number of packets increase, but the amount of data gain reduced as the number of branches ($N_{br}$) increase. In respects of BER for the cases $N_{br}$ is 3, 4, and 5, performance of the adaptive CP length algorithm and the fixed CP scheme are similar. Therefore, it is confirmed the proposed scheme achieved data rate increment without BER performance reduction compared to the conventional fixed CP length scheme.

  • Climate change has been intensifying and affecting forest ecosystems. Over the years, the intensity and frequency of climate change have increased and the effects of climate change have been aggravating due to cumulative greenhouse gases such as CO2, which has resulted in several negative consequences, drought being the main threat among all. Drought affects forest ecosystems directly and indirectly. Insufficient soil moisture, due to drought, may affect the growth of plants and soil respiration (SR), and soil temperature may increase because of desiccated soil. In addition, the mortality rate of plants and soil microorganisms increases. As a result, these effects could reduce forest productivity. Thus, in this article, we have presented various research studies on artificial drought using throughfall exclusion, and we have mainly focused on SR, which is significantly related to forest productivity. The research studies done worldwide were sorted as per the main groups of Köppen-Geiger climate classification and intensively reviewed, especially in tropical climates and temperate climates. We briefly reviewed the properties among the exclusion experiments about the temperate climate, which mostly includes Korean forests. Our review is not a proof of concept, but an assumption for adequate investigation of drought effects in the Korean forest.

  • In this investigation we tried to investigate the effect of oxalic acid on the fate of native sulfate in Bt soil that contained a high kaolinitic clay by observing the distribution of two anions using soil column under the given competitive adsorption between displaced and displacing anions. To do this, the soil columns uniformly packed to a bulk density of 1.25 $g/cm^3$ with Cecil Bt soil were disected and analyzed the amounts of sulfate and oxalic acid both in solution and solid phases after flowing the designated pore volumes of oxalic acid The results showed that two sets of curves-nonlinear (> $10^3M$) and linear (> $10^3M$) curves where the solution of oxalic acid was not adiustet while the approaches to the plateau were slow when pH of oxalic acid was adjusted to 5. The cumulative amount of sulfate desorbed by successive addition of oxalic acid was nonlinearly approached to the plateau at the concentration of $10^3M$ or greater, indicating that the number of addition of oxalic acid increased with decreasing order of oxalic acid. However, the plateau did not obtain where the concentration of oxalic acid were less than $10^4M$, showing a linear increase. Therefore, we may conclude that the rate-limited desorption was involved as the concentration of oxalic acid decreased.

  • The effect of prior cumulative mixing was evaluated by means of a simple regression model which used as a dependent variable percentage(%) change of each repeated observed value for the initial value. The red blood cell count (RBC), hematocrit (Hct), and mean corpuscular volume(MCV) showed a significant decrease (p<.01), but % of basophils had a significant increase (p<.05). The ratios of rate of change (regression coefficient/SD) were .0012 for RBC, .0020 for Hct, .0024 for MCV, and .0011 for % of basophils. Of the 19 parameters evaluated, 21% changed.
