Storytelling of K-content <Itaewon Class> and Interculturalism (K-콘텐츠 <이태원클라쓰>의 스토리텔링과 상호문화주의)

  • In the era of globalization, universal values and empathy are analyzed as important factors in the success of media content. In this context, the perspective of interculturalism is meaningful in K-culture discourse. The TV drama <Itaewon Class> presented a storytelling structure in which the existing order was overturned and new values triumphed. This concept has led to great success in the global market. First of all, it shows multiculturality through the symbolic space of Itaewon. It reproduces people who have various cultural differences in various standards. Characters with diverse values realize intercultural values through cultural dialogue. Such storytelling is evaluated as something that can be widely accepted by people around the world. Interculturalism enables us to seek the direction of sustainable Korean Wave.

  • This study aims to present an integrated development plan that independently holds festivals for ancient Mahan historical and cultural festivals in our region. It is also aimed at promoting the intensive Mahan culture through attracting and promoting tourists through Mahan's history and culture. To this end, we intend to explore future ancient historical culture through in-depth analysis and presentation of development that can help with future development plans and build mutual consensus. The purpose of the study is to re-examine the value of Mahan culture, develop integrated Mahan culture in the future through empirical analysis by local residents and experts, and present the current status and direction through research to attract tourists.

  • Just as costumes reflect the spirit of the time, hair styles echo the social changes and even facilitate them, being used as a means of communication. In short, hair styles reflect the cultural life of the time dynamically. In our modern times, fashion is moving very fast, and such a phenomenon is more conspicuous in hair styles. While individuals are eager to pursue their own individuality, hair styles play a leading role in fashion, excelling the costumes. In this sense, we need to note that hair styles may be related with individual, social and psychological factors. As people are more interested in hair colors, the scope of hair color selection becomes wider. People visit beauty shops to have their hair colors changes rather than have their hairs cut. Selection of a hair color seems to be deeply related with individuals' psychological states. Since hair colors have much effects on their facial images, hair designers need to have an empathy with their customers. Each person has his or her own unique image, and his/her selection of hair colors is affected much by external environment as well as his/her traits. With such basic assumptions in mind, this study was aimed at analyzing the preferences of hair colors by those in their 20's, 30's and 40's who are more interested in their hair colors. To this end, their preferences of or tendencies for hair colors were surveyed by sex, age group and job.

  • Postmodernism, a cultural movement which occurred in the mid-20th century, avoided functional form, one of the features of modernism, and pursued post-rational and post-centric pluralistic thought which puts human emotions in importance. Postmodernism set a high value on emotional instincts of humans and focused on creation of empathy. It includes scepticism of rationalism and indicates the significance of emotional and psychological instincts of humans, or 'emotions'. Along with the big change in that time, more dynamic and unprecedented indoor spaces had appeared. Nigel Coates, who had taken various kinds of artistic activity from the early 1980s to the late 1990s, had tried to make a new approach of objet-focused emotional spaces. Such an approach made in the time when science and technology had rapidly developed and social structure had changed was considerably fresh, liberal, and futuristic. He interpreted spaces by escaping from realistic intentions and communicating with drawings, and designed object-focused emotional spaces by actively employing objets on the basis of ideas. He tried to make emotional sharing between the public and spaces through objet, and showed unique spaces in his own way by reinterpreting the meanings of spaces and stimulating human emotion. This study was intended to look into his artworks to show his way of approaching objets, and to find an application plan and the future possibility of the plan.

  • This study is about the analysis on symbolic meaning and kunstwollen of Issey Miyake's art works which is influenced by various external factors such as social and cultural background, nationality and philosophy. Especially, this research focused on 'Pleats Please Issey Miyake' and 'A Piece of Cloth' which are the core of his works. The most important concept of Issey Miyake's works is the relationship of human body and a piece of cloth. Miyake's clothes has provided the time and the space where inspires the vitality into wearer. He accomplishes the most perfect beauty through incomplete beauty of cloth. Miyake wants to express the emotion of the human being through his clothes and tries to make special code between creator, wearer and viewer. Fashion is accomplished in connection with human body, not exists just as 'clothes'. Fashion has valued as an art which expresses the ideology and the sentiment of human being most directly. Issey Miyake who has tried to express human life and emotion has promoted fashion as an important part of art. Miyake is accepting and delivering the history and culture, expressing and communicating empathy, and combining the different fields harmoniously.

Neuroscience and the Social Powers of Narrative: How Stories Configure Our Brains

  • Stories are important instruments for configuring our cognitive and social worlds, but they do not necessarily make us more caring or less aggressive and self-involved. The ability to tell and follow a story requires cognitive capacities that are basic to the neurobiology of mental functioning, and so it would stand to reason that our experiences with stories would draw on and re-shape patterns of interaction that extend beyond the immediate experience of reading or listening to a narrative. Our intuitive, bodily-based ability to understand the actions of other people is fundamental to social relations, including the circuit between the representation of a configured action emplotted in a narrative and the reader's or listener's activity of following the story as we assimilate its patterns into the figures that shape our worlds. The activity of following a narrative can have a variety of beneficial or potentially noxious social consequences, either promoting the shared intentionality that neurobiologically oriented cultural anthropologists identify as a unique human capacity supporting culturally productive collaboration, or habitualizing and thereby naturalizing particular patterns of perception into rigid ideological constructs. The doubling of "me" and "not-me" in narrative acts of identification may promote the "we-intentionality" that makes socially beneficial cooperation possible, or it can set off mimetic conflict and various contagion effects. Neuroscience cannot predict what the social consequences of narrative will be, but it can identify the brain- and body-based processes through which (for better or worse) stories exercise social power.

A Study on the Potential and Limitation of Pre-producing Dramas through Social Analysis -focusing on a jtbc drama - (소셜 분석을 통한 사전제작 드라마의 가능성과 한계에 관한 연구 -jtbc <맨투맨>을 중심으로-)

  • This paper examines the relevance of pre-production and storytelling in big data analysis and, focusing on JTBC's Man to Man series, looks at how the drama's storytelling should be structured. In this study, we conducted text mining on blogs focused on a particular topic to read the viewer's thoughts on pre-produced dramas and on 67 blogs written about Pre-Production Dramas from 2016.12.15 to 2017.12.15. Also, we conducted sentiment analysis about the Man to Man series, which is not only a pre-production drama, but also has storytelling issues. The blog text extraction and text mining were analyzed using the OutWit Hub and the R, and the tools.provided by social metrics were used to make sentiment analyses of the larger data. Sentiment analysis revealed that the viewers of the Man to Man series did not agree with the romance between Kim Sul-woo and Cha Do-ha, due to the lack of reality in the female characters. Therefore, it was concluded that it is crucial to increase the reality of the characters in order to increase the audience's empathy. These studies will continue to be necessary, because they will form the basis for digitally driven storytelling studies and will provide valuable materials for conducting predictions and instructions in the cultural content industry.

The Effects of Visitor's Service Quality Affecting Visitor's Satisfaction in National Parks (국립공원(國立公園)의 탐방(探訪)서비스 질(質)이 탐방만족도(探訪滿足度)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • The purpose of this paper was to identify the effects of visitor's service quality affecting visitor's satisfaction in national parks(NPs). After reviewing the literature, this research selected and developed the indicators of visitor's service (VS) and have formulated the hypothesis of this research. This research had obtained data through a questionnaire, which surveyed 4,423 visitors at 8 NPs in 2005. We have analyzed the data using descriptive statistical methods, factor analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression method. We found that 1) the results of factor analysis, the five factors of visitor's service (FVSs) i.e., assurance, reliability, empathy, tangibles, responsiveness have extracted. 2) in bivariate analysis, the positive relationships between user's satisfaction and FVSs are fairly low but statistically significant. The higher the value of the five factors of VS the higher the degree of user's satisfaction, 3) in multiple regression analysis, FVSs have been statistically significant at one percent level, and 4) the relative contribution of the assurance of VS on user's satisfaction have been determined to have respectively 2.85 times more important than that of the empathy of VS. The research results suggest that the management of natural resources, cultural resources, and park facilities in national park was the most important factor to increase visitor's satisfaction.

"It's our grief": Re-membering Blanche beyond Pity and Fear (테네시 윌리엄스의 블랑쉬 다시 기억하기 - 공포와 연민을 넘어서 책임과 공감으로)

  • This paper attempts to re-read Tennessee William's A Streetcar Named Desire from a non-Aristotelian perspective, particularly focusing on the audience performativity. In Chapter 6 of the Poetics, Aristotle says that tragedy has a final purpose or end (telos) and that is to inspire a catharsis (literally "purification") of pity and fear by means of representation and to give pleasure from experiencing their relief. However, a dramatic theoretician Augusto Boal argues that Aristotelian catharsis is not to get rid of pity and fear through their vehement discharge; rather, the basic function of catharsis is the purging of antisocial elements from the social body and the restoration of order because catharsis occurs when the spectator, terrified by the spectacle of the catastrophe, is purified of his "hamartia" which looks similar to the tragic flaw of the hero in the play. Thus, Boal asserts that Aristotle's coercive system of tragedy manipulates the emotions of the passive spectator. By contrast, in non-Aristotelian aesthetics, tragedy functions not as legitimation for a particular political configuration but as the performance of ethical acts-through which all the participants, including not only the actors but also the audience, communicate more actively about practical problems and actively work in order to make sense of themselves, others, and society. Here, the audience is required to restore and reinforce his/her capacity to think and to act; thus, an unquestioning, passive, indifferent attitude is not allowed. In these contexts, this paper explores how Tennessee William's A Streetcar Named Desire involves the audience in the responsibility for what occurs on the stage, in order to urge the audience's ethical judgements and responsible acts. This paper argues that what this play asks of us is not catharsis, the purging of pity and fear, but empathy toward the other's pain, beyond pity and fear, to carry out our responsibility of sharing in and caring for the other's suffering. That is to say that it will be an ethical way to "re-member" Blanche DuBoi-the iconic Williams victim "dis-membered" by traumatic memories and open wounds and is thus unable to complete her grieving and mourning-as one of us, not as the other. It will be the only way to remember right regarding her tragedy.

A Study on Guilt for Art Consumption at the Time of Social Disaster (사회적 재난 상황에서 예술소비에 대한 죄책감 연구)

  • When social disaster which is a phenomenon that causes a big wave to the social members occurs, the members of the society are anxious and show feelings of shame or guilt over behaviors that are against social norms. This sense of guilt is expected to reduce consumption of arts having its luxury and hedonic characteristics. The purpose of this study is to identify the causes of the decline in art consumption at the time of social disasters and we focus on guilt. We hypothesize that guilt for art consumption at the time of social disasters will increase as the tendency toward guilt is higher and the empathy tendency is higher. A result of the questionnaire survey of 286 people shows that the higher the guilt for art consumption in the social disaster situation, the more the art consumption decreased and the guilt changed depending on the degree of personal guilt and sympathy. This study contributes to explaining the decrease of art consumption in a big social phenomenon in recent years.
