This study was performed to analyze aroma pattern of Panax species (Korean Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, Chinese Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, Panax quinquefolium L, and Panax notoginseng F.H. Chen) by the PHGC (potable handheld gas chromatograph). Ratios of several peak areas in chromatogram of derivative parrtern were as follows. If ratio of Korean Panax ginseng was 1, Panax notoginseng was $0.030{\sim}0.674$, Chinese Panax ginseng was $0.005{\sim}0.212$ and panax quinquefolium was $0.241{\sim}0.871$. Ratios of peak area at $Rt_{20.02}$ were that if Korean panax ginseng was 1, Chinese Panax ginseng was 0.212, Panax quinquefolium was 0.343 and Panax notoginseng was 0.065. Ratios also of peak area at $Rt_{21.70}\;and\;Rt_{24.90}$ showed clear difference among aroma patterns of Panax specie cultivars. Flavor component at $Rt_{26.15}$ was not detected in Panax quinquefolium and Panax notoginseng but in Korean Panax ginseng and Chinese Panax ginseng. Ratios of peak area at $Rt_{26.15}$ were that if Korean Panax ginseng was 1, Chinese Panax ginseng was 0.185. And so habitat of Panax species cultivars was discriminated. Cultivar and habitat of dried panax species was remarkably distinguised by the chromatogram of frequency pattern, derivative pattern and visual pattern using olfactory images known as Vapor $print^{TM}$.

The purpose of this study was to compare the of ash and minerals contents in different types of soybeans (Baektae, Seoritae, Heuk Tae and Seomoktae) with different cooking methods. Raw, boiled and pan-fried soybean samples were prepared by the Rural Development Administration. Samples were digested by using a microwave and analyzed using ICP-OES and ICP-MS for determining the ash and minerals contents. Ash content in four raw soybeans ranged from 5.07 to 5.59 g/100g. There was no significant difference in the ash contents in raw and pan-fried soybeans (p>0.05). However, the ash content of boiled soybeans was 9 to 14% lower than that of raw soybeans (p<0.05). The minerals contents of Baektae and Seomoktae were high and the major minerals of various soybeans were K, P, Mg, and Ca, which accounted for ash 60.80-65.61%, 20.73-24.26%, 6.90-8.46% and 5.79-8.60%, respectively. The mineral contents of soybeans were significantly different depending on the type of cultivar (p<0.05), but the tendency was not constant. Because the process of soaking and boiling of soybeans made the soluble minerals elute, the ash and mineral contents were reduced. And process of pan-frying of soybeans make Because process of soaking and boiling of soybeans make soluble minerals elute (Ed- this section is very confused and seems to have 2 sentences combined: please check your intended meaning), the ash and mineral contents were reduced. As the soybeans are cooked by pan-frying, the water in the soybeans is evaporated and the mineral content is concentrated or kept constant. These results can serve as the basic data of mineral content during processing and cooking of soybeans.
Gradient concentrations of Tithonia diversifolia green leaves and phosphate rocks were used to investigate their contributions as a fertilizer to the yield and quality improvement of a rainfed rice cultivar. Six treatments were compared: (1) T0, no fertilization (control); (2) T1, 1.28 g of phosphate rocks; (3) T2, 250 g of organic matter; (4) T3, 500 g of organic matter; (5) T4, 250 g of organic matter + 1.28 g of phosphate rocks; (6) T5, 500 g of organic matter + 1.28 g of phosphate rocks. The results showed that the germination percentage recorded 15 days after sowing varied from 58 - 76% between T0 and T5. The number of panicles ranged between 2 (T0) to 6.3 (T5). Moreover, the recorded length of the panicles ranged between 7.5 (T1) to 15.8 cm (T2), and the number of grains per panicle ranged between 25.5 (T1) to 273.5 (T3). The plant height was significantly increased in the T5 (79.27 cm) group compared to the T1 (33.63 cm) and control treatment (T0) (40.08 cm) groups. Although the plant height in the T2, T3, and T4 groups was slightly lower than the T5 group, the difference was not statistically significant. The average of the grain number per plant was high in the T3 (273.6 grains) group compared to the T1 and T0 (25.5 and 32.8 grains) groups, respectively. These results suggest that the combination of T. diversifolia leaves and phosphate rocks as a natural fertilizer would be beneficial when integrated into soil fertility management strategies and would contribute to improving crop yield and quality.
This study was performed to confirm physiological activities according to parts of new pear cultivars (Gamcheonbae, Manpungbae, Chuwhangbae, Hanareum) and Niitaka pear. The total polyphenol compound contents of pear peel, flesh and core were 178~235, 95~113, 177~229 mg/100 g as tannic acid equivalent, respectively. There were differences in the contents by cultivars, Chuwhangbae and Hanareum cultivars showed high contents. The total flavonoid contents of the pear peel, flesh and core were 29.2~40.2, 24.3~34.3, 26.9~38.8 mg/100 g, respectively and those of Chuwhangbae and Gamcheonbae cultivars showed comparatively high values. The electron-donating ability was high in Chuwhangbae, Gamcheonbae and in the pear peel (29.7~57.7%), core (29.1~38.2%), flesh (7.6~17.7%), in that order. The nitrate scavenging activity was highest in that pear peel (21.0~49.8%), followed by the core (11.8~16.2%) and flesh (7.8~9.7%), but there was little difference by cultivar.

This study was conducted to investigate the possibility of changes in onion (cv. 'Turbo' and 'Changnyongdaego') bulb quality during storage at room and cold temperature. Increased weight loss was found in the onion bulb stored at both cold and room temperature conditions. 4% weight loss was found in bulbs stored at room temperature and 2% at cold storage as compared to fresh cultivated onion bulb; after three months. Initially, there was no significant difference in the firmness of bulbs between cultivars and storage conditions. Hunter a value of bulb stored at room temperature was higher than the value of bulb stored at cold temperature. 27% and 7.9% decay was found after three months in 'Changnyongdaego' and 'Turbo' cultivars stored under room temperature condition respectively. In contrast, only 2% decay was noticed in both cultivars stored at cold storage condition. Hunter L value of onion bulb gradually decreased in both room and cold temperature storage conditions. In conclusion, quality of onion bulb can be maintained until three months. For long term storage and quality maintenance, under room temperature conditions a resistance cultivar should be selected.
The objective of this study was to test germinability of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) varieties at low temperatures. Seeds of III sesame varieties representing different maturity groups and countries were tested at four different temperatures between $10^{\circ}C$ and $16^{\circ}C$. Average germination percentages of III varieties were 92%, 57% and 3.3% at $16^{\circ}C, 14{\circ}C$ and $12^{\circ}C$.respectively. The highest daily germination percentage was observed after 4 days of incubation at $16^{\circ}C$, while it was after 8 days at $14^{\circ}C$. A regression analysis indicated that $15^{\circ}C$ as the minimum temperature for satisfactory germination in field conditions. In general, Korean local collections had better germinability than introduced varieties from 6 countries at different latitudes. 'San dong', a Korean local cultivar. showed the highest germination percentage (24%) at $12^{\circ}C$ when the average germination percentage of all varieties was as low as $3.3^{\circ}C$. Early maturity varieties germinated better at $12^{\circ}C$ and $14^{\circ}C$ than medium or late maturity groups, but no difference was observed at $16^{\circ}C$. Although larger seeds showed better germinability within a variety, there seems to be no relationship between seed size and germinability in sesame.in sesame.
Two late-maturing perilla cultivars for vegetables, ‘Ipdlkkae 1’ and ‘Manbaekdlkkae’, were planted on 15 May, 30 May, 15 June, 30 June, and 15 July in 2000 to determine the optimum planting date for seed production in Jeju Island. Significant interaction between cultivar and planting date was observed for number of days from planting to maturity. There were significant differences between two cultivars for days to flowering. Ipdlkkae 1 flowered two days earlier but matured one day later than Manbaekdlkkae. As planting was delayed from 15 May to 15 July, when averaged across two cultivars, days to flowering and maturity decreased from 137 to 77 days and 179 to 121 days, respectively. As planting was delayed, stem length, number of branches per plant and number of node on the main stem decreased from 150 to 81 cm, 17.0 to 7.3, and 16.9 to 10.3, respectively. Number of clusters per plant decreased 65.6 to 50.7 with delayed planting but number of capsules per cluster was not significantly affected by planting date. With delayed planting, 1,000-grain weight increased 3.2 to 3.9 g, but grain yield decreased from 1,820 to 1,338 kg/㏊. However, there was no significant difference for grain yield between 15 and 30 May plantings. The results of this study suggest that the optimum planting date for seed production of late maturing vegetable perilla may be from early May to late May in Jeju Island.

This study was carried out to compare isozyme band pattern, growth characteristics and tuber yield of Dioscorea batatas to get basic information for varietal classification. It could be identify clearly by protein and esterase band pattern of leaf, petiole and stem tissue in three cultivar but with peroxidase band it was difficult to identify because of similar pattern in leaf and petiole tissue. Three cultivars has different leaf shape as Dan-ma and Jang-ma were lanceolate, Sukunea was long-heart shape in upper part of plants. In phyllotaxis, Dan-ma and Jang-ma shows alternate and opposite but Suwon 2 shows opposite in upper parts of stem. Root length shows significant difference from 9.7cm to 51cm respectively as 30cm, 51cm and 9.7cm in Dan-ma, Jang-ma and Sukunea. Tuber yield of three cultivars were 27.5M/T in Dan-ma, 22.8M/T in Jang-ma and 22.8M/T/ha in Sukunea.
The experiment was carried out to find the feasibility of using Oxyfluorfen in the paddy fields by investigating the difference of selective activity of Oxyfluorfen among rice cultivars and major paddy weed species. The dosage of Oxyfluorfen that show selective activity between rice cultivars and weed species ranged from 0.1 to 0.4kg ai/ha. The degree of growth inhibition was in order of whole-plant soaking application > root soaking application > stem bandage application, and in that case $10^{-5}$M Oxyfluorfen was treated after emergence. Especially the growth inhibition of rice cultivars and Cyperus serotinus was low, among others. Photosynthesis was severely inhibited at the Oxyfluorfen level above $10^{-4}$ M in all the tested weeds, but inhibition of respiration was not to be seen. Isolated single cells of two rice cultivars and Cyperus serotinus were tolerant to $10^{-5}$M Oxyfluorfen, but those of Echinochloa crus-galli and Sagittaria pygmaea were susceptible comparatively. The growth inhibition of suspension cultured rice cell induced by the increments of Oxyfluorfen concentration, and the degree of inhibition was higher in C.V. Mushakdanti than in C.V. Aichiasahi.

The purpose of this study is to observe the growth habit and investigate a possibility of cultivating the GM rice (CaMsrB2-8) as a rice cultivar having drought resistance. Germination viability test showed that there was no significant difference between the drought-resistant GM(CaMsrB2-8) and non-GM (Ilmi) rice which was the parent variety at the GM rice. All the seeds of CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi germinated after 6 days. Viviparous germination was not found in CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi that was grown in greenhouse at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ with water spraying for 40 days. Ratooning of CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi was observed in 7-14 days and found uniform in field condition. CaMsrB2-8 seemed to grow faster than Ilmi. But CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi were similar in 14-21 days. Both CaMsrB2-8 and Ilmi showed low seed shattering and more than 90% grains were ripened. All the seeds scattered in the paddy soil surface were not germinated after passing the winter. This study suggests that the drought-resistant GM rice was not significantly different with the parent variety of Ilmi in many agronomic characteristics such as wildness traits.
