Current major photovoltaic (PV) market share (> 60%) is being occupied by the multicrystalline (mc)-silicon solar cells despite of low efficiency compared to single crystalline silicon solar cells. The diamond wire sawing technology reduces the production cost of crystalline silicon solar cells, it increases the optical loss for the existing mc-silicon solar cells and hence its efficiency is low in the current mass production line. To overcome the optical loss in the mc-crystalline silicon, caused by the diamond wire sawing, next generation texturing process is being investigated by various research groups for the PV industry. In this review, the limitation of surface structure and optical loss due to the reflectivity of conventional mc-silicon solar cells are explained by the typical texturing mechanism. Various texturing technologies that could minimize the optical loss of mc-silicon solar cells are explained. Finally, next generation texturing technology to survive in the fierce cost competition of photovoltaic market is discussed.
Crystalline silicon photovoltaic module certification began in 2007. "Renewable Energy Equipment Certification Scheme" was implemented until July 28, 2015. Then, the scheme was changed to "KS Certification Scheme" since July 29, 2015. A total of 2,331 models have been certified by 2016. The proportion of multi crystalline modules in certified products is higher than that of mono crystalline modules, and Korean modules account for 78% of the total certification modules. Chinese solar cells account for the highest percentage of 40% of the total modules and 62.4% of modules certified in 2016 use Chinese solar cells. With the development of technology, module power is continuously increasing, and efficiency is also rising. The average efficiency of mono crystalline module is 0.74% higher than the average of multi crystalline module. As a result of comparing domestic module with Chinese module, the highest efficiency of mono crystalline module and multi crystalline module and the average efficiency of mono crystalline module are higher than those of Chinese module, but the average efficiency of multi crystalline module is similar to that of Chinese module.
The screen printing technique is one of process to form electrode for crystalline silicon solar cell and has been studied a lot, because it has many advantages such as low price, high efficiency and mass production due to simple and fast process. The reason why electrode formation is important is for influence of series resistance and amount of incident light in crystalline silicon solar cell. In this study, electrode was formed by screen printing method with various conditions like squeegee angle, printing speed, snap off, printing pressure. After optimizing various conditions, double printing method was applied to obtain low series resistance and high aspect ratio. As a result, we obtained electrode resistance 45.31 ohm, aspect ratio 4.38, shading loss 7.549% mono-crystalline silicon solar cell with optimal double screen printing condition.
Two methods that can reduce reflectance in solar cells are surface texturing and anti-reflection coating. Wet chemical etching is a typical method that surface texturing of multi-crystalline silicon. Wet chemical etching methods are the acid texturization of saw damage on the surface of multi-crystalline silicon or double-step chemical etching after KOH saw damage removal too. These methods of surface texturing are realized by chemical etching in acid solutions HF-$HNO_3$-$H_2O$. In this solutions we can reduce reflectance spectra by simple process etching of multi-crystalline silicon surface. We have obtained reflectance of 27.19% m 400~1100nm from acidic chemical etching after KOH saw damage removal. This result is about 7% less than just saw damage removal substrate. The surface morphology observed by microscope and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
The surface texturing technology is one of the methods to improve the efficiency of crystalline silicon solar cell. This process reduced the reflectance at the surface by the so-called double bounce effect and increased the light trapping. Among these surface texturing technology, the laser texturing is effective for multi-crystalline silicon solar cells which have random crystallographic directions. We investigated the characteristics of laser processing on the surface of the multi-crystalline silicon solar cells using the fiber laser.
The crystalline silicon solar cell where the solar cell market grows rapidly is occupying of about 85% or more. high-efficiency and low cost endeavors many crystalline silicon solar cells. the fabrication processes of high-efficiency crystalline silicon solar cells necessitate complicated fabrication processes and Ti/Pd/Ag contact, however, this contact formation processed by expensive materials. Ni/Cu contact formation is good alternative. in this paper, according to temperature Ni silicide makes, produced Ni/Cu contact solar cell and measured conversion efficiency.
For the fabrication of poly-crystalline silicon ingot, CCCC (Cold Crucible Continuous Casting) method under a high frequency alternating magnetic field, was utilized in order to prevent crucible consumption and ingot contamination and to increase production rate. In order to effectively and continuously melt and cast silicon, which has a high radiation heat loss due to the high melting temperature and a low induction heating efficiency due to a low electric conductivity, Joule and pinch effects were optimized. Throughout the present investigation, poly-crystalline Si ingot was successfully produced at the casting speed of above 1.5 mm/min under a non-contact condition.
High temperature Kermal diffusion from $POCl_3$ source usually used for conventional process through put of a cell manufacturing line and potentially reduce cell efficiency through bulk like time degradation. To fabricate high efficiency solar cells with minimal thermal processing, spin-on-doping(SOD) technique can be employed to emitter diffusion of a silicon solar cell. A technique is presented to emitter doping of a mono-crystalline solar cell using spin-on doping (SOD). Moreover it is shown that the sheet resistance variation with RTA temperature and time fer mono-crystalline and multi-crystalline silicon samples. This novel SOD technique was successfully used to produces 11.3% efficiency l04mm by 104mm size mono-crystalline silicon solar cells.
The texturing is one of the most important processes for high efficiency crystalline silicon solar cells. The rear side flatness of silicon solar cell is very important for increasing the light reflectance and forming uniform back surface field(BSF) region in manufacturing high efficiency crystalline silicon solar cells. We investigated texturing difference between front and rear side of wafer by texturing of two adhered wafers. As a result, the flatter rear side was obtained by forming less pyramid size compared to the front side and improved reflectance of long wavelength and back surface field(BSF) region were also achieved. Therefore, the texturing of two adhered wafers can be expected to improve the efficiency of silicon solar cells due to increased short circuit current(Isc).
