Objective : Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a member of the neurotrophic factor family and plays a vital role in the physiological processes of organisms, especially in the nervous system. Many recent studies have reported that NGF is also involved in the regulation of tumourigenesis by either promoting or suppressing tumor growth, which depends on the location and type of tumor. However, little is known regarding the effect of NGF on interspinal schwannoma (IS). In the present study, we aimed to explored whether mouse nerve growth factor (mNGF), which is widely used in the clinic, can influence the growth of interspinal schwannoma cells (ISCs) isolated from IS in vitro. Methods : ISCs were isolated, cultured and identified by S-100 with immunofluorescence analysis. S-100-positive cells were divided into five groups, and separately cultured with various concentrations of mNGF (0 [phosphate buffered saline, PBS], 40, 80, 160, and 320 ng/mL) for 24 hours. Western blot and quantantive real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were applied to detect tyrosine kinase A (TrkA) receptor and p75 neurotrophin receptor ($p75^{NTR}$) in each group. Crystal violet staining was selected to assess the effect of mNGF (160 ng/mL) on ISCs growth. Results : ISCs growth was enhanced by mNGF in a dose-dependent manner. The result of crystal violet staining revealed that it was significantly strengthened the cells growth kinetics when cultured with 160 ng/mL mNGF compared to PBS group. Western blot and quantantive real time PCR discovered that TrkA receptor and mRNA expression were both up-regualated under the condition of mNGF, expecially in 160 ng/mL, while the exoression of $p75^{NTR}$ demonstrated no difference among groups. Conclusion : From these data, we conclude that exogenous mNGF can facilitate ISC growth by activating both TrkA receptor and $p75^{NTR}$. In addition, patients who are suffering from IS should not be administered mNGF in the clinic.

Antibiotic resistance is a serious problem to food safety as well as human healthcare. To avoid this, there are several approaches for a new class of antibiotic agents that target only production of virulence factors such as biofilm without bacterial growth defect. The objective of this study was to investigate the antibiofilm activity of tuberostemonine in Staphylococcus aureus. Tuberostemonine significantly reduced the biofilm formation (26.07-47.02%) in the crystal violet assay whereas there were no effect on S. aureus growth. The dispersion in preformed biofilm was also observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Quantification real-time PCR revealed that the icaA and agrA expression having an important role in biofilm production of S. aureus were strongly affected with tuberostemonine. These results suggest that tuberostemonine has potential for controlling biofilm formation and dispersion by effect on virulence regulation of S. aureus.

Background : Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new therapeutic method aimed at the selective destruction of cancer cells. The outcome is death of cancer cells through apoptosis or necrosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the characterization of PDT induced cell death in A549 lung cancer cells. Materials and methods : A549 cells were used as the lung cancer cell. 5 aminolevulinic acid (ALA) was used as the photosensitizer and a 632nm diode laser (Biolitec, Germany) as the light source. Cells were incubated with various concentrations of ALA. The 632nm diode laser was then administered for various laser irradiation times. The treated cells were incubated with 24, 48 and 72 hours. The cell viabilities were measured using the crystal violet assay and light microscopy. To observe the cell death mechanism after PDT, cells were observed under fluorescence microscopy after double staining with Hoechst 33342 and propium iodide after PDT. Results : In the crystal violet assay at 24 hours after PDT with a $3.2J/cm^2$ laser irradiation power, the cell viabilities were $89.56{\pm}4.11$, $87.67{\pm}5.48$, and $69.37{\pm}8.84$ with ALA concentrations of 10, 100, and $1mg/m{\ell}$, respectively. In crystal violet assay at 24 hours after PDT with $1mg/m{\ell}$ of ALA, the cell viabilities were $74{\pm}19.85$, $55{\pm}6.1$, and $49.06{\pm}16.64%$ with 1.6, 3.2 and $6.4J/cm^2$ laser irradiation powers, respectively. However, increasing the interval time after PDT did not change the cell viabilities. In the apoptosis assay, photodynamic therapy was inducing the apoptotic cell death. Conclusions : This study shows the apoptotic anticancer effect of photodynamic therapy in A549 lung cancer cells. However, further evaluations with other cancer cells and photosensitizers are necessary.

The light guide plate (LGP) provides a surface light source on the back of the liquid crystal display (LCD), which is not self-emitting; thus, it is an essential component of display units requiring sufficient brightness. To maximize the light-emitting effect of an LGP, enough incident light, from the light source, should enter into its side. However, the current trend in LCD panels is represented by larger and thinner screens and this smaller thickness prevents the accordingly thin LGPs from providing sufficient brightness. This paper proposes a process for manufacturing wedge-type LGPs, which might increase the amount of incident light and, consequently the surface light emission, for applications in large LCDs. The proposed method was validated by building a dedicated manufacturing machine and performing illuminance experiments on the fabricated LGP.

Potassium lithium niobate (KLN) crystals, grown by the micro pulling down $({\mu}-PD)$ method, have been considered on the interchange between incongruent melt composition and second harmonic generation (SHG) properties because of the sensitive interaction. Correlation between the composition of crystals and the wavelength of SHG applications from ultra - violet to green region was found. Also, the ${\mu}-PD KLN$ KLN crystals showed a homogeneity of noncritical phase matching and an excellent SHG property which is converted to blue laser light with half wavelength by the red irradiation.

In this study, we investigated the electro-optical(EO) characteristic of fringe-field switching(FFS) mode cell by the two kinds of ultraviolet(UV) alignment method on the organic thin film(polyimide: PI). The suitable organic layersfor FFS cell and the aligning capabilities of nematic liquid crystal(NLC) using the in-situ photoalignment method were studied Disclination is observed after conventional photoalignment method for 1h, and in-situ photoalignment method for 1h. Monodomain alignment of the NLC can be observed via in-situ photoalignment method for 2h and 3h. It is considered that NLC alignment is due to photo-depolymerization of the polymer with oblique non-polarized UV irradiation on PI surface. An unstable V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with conventional photoalignment method can be achieved. However, a stable V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situ photoalignment method(1h), and V-T curve of UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situphotoalignment method was much stable comparing with that of other UV-aligned FFS-LCD's. As a result, more stable EO performanceof UV-aligned FFS-LCD with in-situphotoalignment method for 3h is obtained than that of the other UV-aligned FFS-LCD's.
Effect of different alkane based solvents on the stability of emulsion liquid membrane was investigated using normal alkanes (n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane and n-decane) under various operating parameters of surfactant concentration, emulsification time, internal phase concentration, volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase, volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase and stirring speed. Results of stability revealed that emulsion liquid membrane containing n-octane as solvent and span-80 (5 % (w/w)) as emulsifying agent presented the highest amount of emulsion stability (the lowest breakage) compared with other solvents; however, operating parameters (surfactant concentration (5% (w/w)), emulsification time (6 min), internal phase concentration (0.05 M), volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase (1/1), volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase (1/5) and stirring speed (300 rpm)) were also influential on improving the stability (about 0.2% breakage) and on achieving the most stable emulsion. The membrane with the highest stability was employed to extract acridine orange with various concentrations (10, 20 and 40 ppm) from water. The emulsion liquid membrane prepared with n-octane as the best solvent almost removed 99.5% of acridine orange from water. Also, the prepared liquid membrane eliminated completely (100%) other cationic dyes (methylene blue, methyl violet and crystal violet) from water demonstrating the efficacy of prepared emulsion liquid membrane in treatment of dye polluted waters.
Bloody fingerprints are important in many cases - especially in murder case. This study compared effectiveness of some reagents which had better quality of developing bloody fingerprints from human skin. Leuco crystal violet(LCV), hungarian red, amido black, coomassie blue, acid violet17, and crowle's double stain were used. Fingerprints were generated in the depletion series, and tissue method was used in applying all reagents. LCV showed the best result in this study.
The reaction of $({\eta}^5-C_5Me_5)_2K$ with $BiCl_3$ yielded $({\eta}^5-C_5Me_5)_2BiCl$[I], the first organobismuth compound with ${\pi}$-bonded cyclopentadienyl ring. The compound I which was the violet crystal (yield, 30%) was decomposed to $PCpBiCl_2$. The Structure of $({\eta}^5-C_5Me_5)_2BiCl$ was identified as single crystal by X-ray diffraction method. The eliminated product $C_{20}H_{30}$, triclinic crystal of space group p1(Z=2) which was attached with C-C ${\sigma}$-bond of two cyclopentadienyl was defined by the structural analysis.
