  • In this study, the thermal desorption-cryofocusing-gas chromatographic(TD-C-GC) method was developed for determination of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) in ambient air and was applied at the municipal solid waste landfill sites. On-column cryofocusing was possible only with a 100 ml dewars bottle in TD-C-GC method with a stainless steel column. However, high operating pressure was needed for purging VOCs from the absorbent trap, which was able to solve by pressure programming with a electric pressure controller. By using both pressure and temperature programming brought increasing of resolution power in on-column cryofocusing method, but the high pressure caused a leakage of sample tube with repeated use. A loop cryofocusing devise was also developed and compared with the direct on-column method. In loop cryofocusing method, VOCs were concentrated on a 0.8mm i.d. loop which is located between the injector and separation column by using liquid nitrogen. In order to purge VOCs from the absorbent trap, only 0.4 psi of pressure was need in the loop cryofocusing method. Dual detection system was applied for the analysis of VOCs; a FID was used for hydrocarbons and a FPD was used for sulfur-containing compounds. Qualitative analysis was done by on-column cryofocusing GC-MS system. Among the large number of VOCs, toluene was the most abundant. Hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, dimethyl disulfide and methyl propyl disulfide were detected at landfill site by FPD.

• For the risk assessment of human exposure to volatile halogenated hydrocarbons, a dynamic purge trap/on-column cryofocusing method using capillary gas chromatograph-$^{63}Ni$ electron capture detector and thermal desorption unit was applied to analyze the free forms, metabolites of 1, 1, 2-trichloroethylene and 1, 1, 2, 2-tetrachloroethylene. The urine sample was diluted with distilled water, hydrolyzed and sealed. Then the inert gas was infused to purge out free 1, 1, 2-trichloroethylene, free 1, 1, 2, 2-tetrachloroethylene and urichloroethanol. These compounds were trapped to $Tenax^R$ / GC-gas trap device throughout clean up tube. Being undertectable to gas chromatograph directly, trichloroacetic acid was methyl esterificated and trapped in the manner above mentioned. The optimal incubation time to get best recovery of methyl ester was 4 hours at $60^circ$C. The concentrations of free volatile halogenated hydrocarbons and their metabolites in urine were obtained of free volatile halogenated hydrocarbons and their metabolites in urine were obtained from 5 healthy volunteers. This analytical method is expected to make the biological monitoring more precise and convenient.

  • An analytical method for solvent-free determination of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) in water using repetitive membrane extractions coupled to cryofocusing and GC-MS was derived. BTEX compounds that permeated through a nonporous silicone membrane from the aqueous phase and evaporated into the acceptor phase were purged into a cryofocusing trap ($-100^{\circ}C$) with helium gas. The BTEX compounds, thus enriched in the trap, were thermally desorbed into a capillary column GC and detected using an MS. The flow rate of the donor phase (30 mL water) was set at 10 mL/min, and membrane extractions, accomplished by returning the water drained from the extraction module to the sample container, were repeated three times at $20{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. Although recoveries (%) were variable, from the highest for benzene (approximately 80%) to the lowest for ethylbenzene and xylenes (3.5-10%), the method showed satisfactory precision (RSD 2.2-10%) with good-linearity calibration curves ($r^2$ 0.9976-0.9997 in 1-100 ${\mu}g$/L range) for all of the compounds. The method detection limits (MDLs) ranged from 0.16 to 1.8 ${\mu}g$/L. The results showed the method's advantages such as short analysis time and overall simplicity without solvent compared to the conventional techniques.

  • Since trihalomethanes (THMs) and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected and measured in drinking water supplies in 1974, because of the frequent occurrence of these compounds and the potential health hazard they pose, several methods for detecting VOCs have been developed. The most widely accepted method for the analysis of THMs and other VOCs is a purgeand-trap method. In the analysis of VOCs by purge-and-trap,there are several factors which may give rise to errors. Some of the factors to be considered are purge time, carryover effect, cryofocusing temperature, and trap desorption temperature. In this study, many aspects of purge-and-trap were investigated. Understanding the sources of error makes it possible to adapt the analysis parameters to compensate for such effects.

  • The volatile organic compounds emitted from food wrapping films when it was used at high temperatures. However, the testing method based on solvent extraction may not be suitable for determination of volatile organic compounds from food wrapping films. Therefore, thermal extraction device was investigated in the study for reflection of actual usage conditions at home and restaurant. In this study, PVC food wrapping films were exposed to normal use condition controlled from $50^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$ and collected on sorbent trap. Then, emitted VOCs from the films were analyzed with On-column cryofocusing-GC/MS system. The major VOCs emitted from films were $C_{12}-C_{18}$ paraffinic hydrocarbons, dimethylphthalate, alkylphenols, known as endocrine disrupting chemical, such as tetramethylbutylphenol, tert-butylphenol, and nonylphenol. The concentration of tetramethylbutylphenol emitted from PVC films was $0.07ng/cm^2$ at $50^{\circ}C$, rapidly increased with temperature, $3.94ng/cm^2$ at $100^{\circ}C$.
