  • Recently, granular soils having a large particle size are frequently used as a filling material in the construction of foundation, harbor, dam, and so on. The shear behavior of this granular soil plays a key role in the stability of structures. For example, soil particle crushing occurring at the interface between structure and soil and/or within soil mass can cause the disturbance of ground characteristics and consequently induce an issues in respect of stability of structures. In order to investigate the shear behavior according to an existence and nonexistence of particle crushing, numerical analyses were conducted by using the DEM(Discrete Element Method)-based software program PFC(Particle Flow Code). Using the crushing model and non-crushing model which were created in this study, numerical analyses of ring shear test were conducted and their results were analyzed and compared. In general, landslide and slope stability are accompanied by a large displacement and consequently not only a peak strength but also a residual strength are very important in the analysis of landslide and slope stability. However the direct shear test which has been commonly used in the determination of shear strength parameters has a limitation on displacement therefore the residual strength parameters can not be obtained. The characteristics of residual shear behavior were investigated through the numerical analyses in this study.

  • In this study, a method of shear crushing and a two-stage disk mill were introduced to grind the waste tire powder. Rubber chips with various size were obtained during the crushing or grinding step. The two-stage disk mill was composed of two drum-type blades rotating at various speed and in opposite directions. Therefore, more roughly surfaced particles of micronized waste tire powder were obtained using shear crushing rather than using conventional cutting crushing. In this study, the shape of shear-crushed waste tire particles was compared with conventional cutting crushing particles by scanning electron microscope. In addition, the particle size analyzer was employed to determine the appropriate particle size of waste ground tire powders obtained in this study.

  • In order to analyze the influence of particle shape on evolution of particle crushing and characteristic of shear behavior of granular soil, direct shear test was simulated by using DEM (Discrete Element Method). Six particle shapes were generated by clump and cluster model built in PFC (Particle Flow Code). The results of direct shear test for six particle shapes were compared and analyzed with those for circular particle shape. The results of numerical tests showed a good agreement with those of experimental tests, thus the appropriateness of numerical modelling set in this study was proved. As for particle shape, more angular and rougher particle induced larger internal friction angle and more particle crushing than relatively round and smooth particle. When particles were crushed, crushing was concentrated on the shear band adjacent to the shear plane. Finally, it can be concluded that the numerical models suggested in this study can be used extensively for other studies concerning the shear behavior of granular soil including soil crushing.

  • The shear behavior at the particle/surface interface such as rock joint can determine the mechanical behavior of whole structure. Therefore, a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms governing its behavior and accurately estimation of the interface strength is essential. In this paper, PFC, a numerical analysis program of discrete element method was used to investigate the effects of the surface roughness crushing on interface strength. The surface roughness was characterized by smooth, intermediate, and rough surface, respectively. Particle shape was classified into one ball model of circular shape and 3 ball model of triangular shape. The surface shape was modelled by wall model of non-crushing surface and ball model of crushing surface. The results showed that as the bonding strength of ball model decreases, lower interface strength is induced. After the surface roughness crushing was occurred, the interface strength tended to converge and higher bonding strength induced lower surface roughness crushing. Higher friction angle was induced in wall model and higher surface roughness induced the higher friction angle. From these findings, it is verified that the surface roughness and surface roughness crushing effect on the particle/surface interface shear behavior.

  • Sequential quick crushing and alkali hydrolysis(SeCAH), as a pretreatment for foodwaste, incorporating mechanical crushing and alkali hydrolysis was proposed and investigated in this study. Focuses were placed on the improvement of biodegradability of foodwaste and the estimation of potential inhibitors for anaerobic digestion. The solubility of the pretreated foodwaste by SeCAH was increased 2.5 times rather than mechanical crushing. Considering solubility improvement and energy consumption, 2,000 rpm of crushing strength and 5$\sim$10 sec of crushing time are recommended. After SeCAH, the fraction of large organic particles(>2.36 mm) of foodwaste was sharply decreased from 88.0% to 29.0%, otherwise the fraction of small particles(<75 $\mu$m) was greatly increased from 10.5% to 40.7%. Ammouinum, potassium and sulfate were estimated as potential inhibitors for anaerobic digestion and their concentrations in pig slurry were 3331.3 mg/L, 4256.5 mg/L and 1017.5 mg/L, respectively.

  • Carbonate sand of Sabkha layer in the middle east was made of deposition of shell fragments and it consisted of porous particles containing inner void. Generally, at yield stress the soil structure begins to break down, so the porewater pressure and the settlement are increased rapidly. In carbonate sand, unlike quartz sand if particle crushing happens, the inner voids are exposed and porewater pressure can be decreased under yield stress. Porewater pressure can be determined as the sum of excess porewater pressure due to increase of relative density, inner void expose of particle under particle crushing stress and rearrangement of crushed particle fragments. The porewater pressure can be negative value in case of greater amount of inner void expose, so if particle crushing is bigger, the porewater pressure value is smaller. The negative value zone of porewater pressure from triaxial test result means particle crushing effect is bigger than outer void decrease effect and the particle crushing effect dominant zone size was 1.50∼3.46% from triaxial test result of Sabkha layer.

  • We identified how plants affected by the human behavior of crushing plants respond and what kind of plants responded sensitively. We investigated Lactuca sativa "Gaesebadak", Syneilesis palmata and Peucedanum japonicum as plants that humans use for edible purposes, and Achyranthes japonica and Bidens bipinnata as wild plants that stick to people's clothes and disperse seed. Plants exposed to human breathing air were compared with those exposed to human breathing air after being crushed. Methyl jasmonate (MeJA), a chemical word, was measured using Syft/MS, which detects real-time VOC, and related genes were analyzed. The amount of MeJA of Syneilesis palmata and Peucedanum japonicum as edible plants was greater than that of non-edible plants that disperse seeds using humans. The amount of MeJA ranged from 0.20 ppb to 0.35 ppb when the control group were not exposed to human breathing air. On the other hand, MeJA decreased after increasing for the first hour in human breathing air. Also, MeJA affected by human breathing after crushing plants was higher than that affected by just human breathing air. Peucedanum japonicum showed the most distinctive difference between the treatment with human breathing after crushing plants and the treatment with just human breathing. In addition, the gene activity of JAR1 and JMT increased 3 hours after the treatment with human breathing after crushing plants. Therefore, in the treatment with human breathing after crushing plants, the concentration of MeJA and the activity of related genes showed the same tendency to increase. As a result, the plant that responded sensitively to human behavior was Peucedanum japonicum. Plants released MeJA as a chemical word in the treatment with human breathing air after crushing plants.

  • Characteristics of crushing and magnetic separation on the spent batteries, were investigated for reclaiming spent carbon-zinc and alkaline manganese dioxide batteries. Crushing of carbon zinc battery was easier than that of alkaline $MnO_2$battery using impact type crusher with rotary blades. Most of magnetic products were distributed in the range of 8 mesh size. With crushing 1 ton of spent carbon-zinc and alkaline $MnO_2$batteries respectively, magnetic separation of 8 mesh oversize particles, we can get 214 kg and 235 kg of magnetic products which is composed of 94% and 88% of Fe.
