To obtain basic information on the utilization of Suaeda (S.) asparagoides $M_{IQ}$ as a raw material in food, it's chemical components of were investigated. S. asparagoides $M_{IQ}$ from the Hwaseong-si in Korea was used after drying and grinding with powder. The total dietary fiber, insoluble dietary fiber and soluble dietary fiber contents of S. asparagoides $M_{IQ}$ were found to be 39.41%, 37.63% and 1.78%, respectively. Macromineral components of S. asparagoides $M_{IQ}$ were Na (7.6%), K (2.4%) and Mg (0.6%). High contents of microminerals such as Cu, Mn and Zn were also found. Lysine and methionine which are essential amino acids were detected with the value of 215 mg/100 g and 23.2 mg/100 g, respectively. S. asparagoides $M_{IQ}$ that was harvested in May was higher in crude protein than that harvested in September but the crude fat content of that which was harvested in September was twice as high as that harvested in May.
Total dietary fiber and crude fiber contents were analyzed for 54 different kinds of Korean vegetable foods by AOAC method. On the fresh matter basis, total dietary fiber and crude fiber contents of tested food samples ranged from $1.19{\sim}10.35%,\;0.19{\sim}1.28%$ in cereals, $1.12{\sim}1.81%,\;0.29{\sim}0.64%$ in potatoes, $2.05{\sim}18.14%,\;0.38{\sim}4.42%$, in pulses, $0.99{\sim}7.42%,\;0.35{\sim}2.61%$ in fresh vegetables, $2.28{\sim}41.14%,\;0.97{\sim}20.96%$ in processed vegetables, $0.19{\sim}2.91%,\;0.10{\sim}0.79%$ in fruits, $4.27{\sim}10.83%,\;0.96{\sim}4.62%$ in nuts and seeds, $1.62{\sim}3.94%,\;0.79{\sim}0.89%$ in mushrooms, $28.70{\sim}38.19%,\;2.17{\sim}6.41%$ in seaweeds, and $4.65{\sim}6.67%,\;2.49{\sim}3.44%$ in seasonings, respectively. The ratio of total dietary fiber/crude fiber contents ranged from 2 to 13, showing a wide variation among food commodities, necessitating the analysis of total dietary fiber content for individual food items.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of sowing date and cutting time on feed value of rye in paddy field at Yesan from Oct. 1990 to June 1991. The field experiment was sown 5 times at 10 day intervals from Oct. 5. The content of crude protein, digestible protein, total digestible nutrient(TDN), minerals(P, K, Ca, Mg), and energy(ENE, NEL, NEM, NEG) were decreased due to earlier sowing, while the content of acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber(NDF) increased. On the other hand, the yields per unit area for crude and digestible protein, TDN, minerals, and energy increased due to earlier sowing, but there was no significant difference among the plots sown on Oct. 5 through Oct. 25. The highest yield of crude protein was shown at late flowering stage, digestible protein and net energy gain (NEG) at heading stage and TDN at milk stage respectively.
A pitch precursor for a general purpose carbon fiber was prepared by condensation of pyrolized fuel oil (petroleum residual oil) with bromine under nitrogen blowing. such a condensation raised the softening point of the pitch from 4$0^{\circ}C$ to $265^{\circ}$ with a yield of 43%. The pitch precurosr showed an enhanced aromaticity and enlarged molecular size, which led to a reduction in molecular mobility and optical isotropy. The precursor was spun into fibers of $20\mu\textrm{m}$ diameter at a take-up speed of 700m/min. The fiber was stepwise stabilized in air and carbonized in Ar gas to obtain an isotropic carbon fiber. The carbon fiber exhibited tensile strengths of 500-800 ㎫though the fiber was formed via a crude method. The electric conductivity of the carbon fiber was relatively high, 2.2$\times$$10^2$S/cm, sufficient to be used as electrode materials.

This study assessed and compared meat quality and fiber characteristics of longissimus lumborum (LL), psoas major (PM), and semimembranosus muscles among Hanwoo (HW), Jeju black (BL), and their crossbred (BH) cattle. Twelve carcasses from each breed (36 in total) were used in this study. BL and BH had higher moisture and crude ash contents and lower crude fat and protein contents than HW, regardless of the muscle type. BL had higher CIE a*, cooking loss, and shear force values than did the other breeds for all muscle types. The muscle fiber size (cross-sectional area) of BL and BH was larger than that of HW for all muscle types. Type IIX was the dominant muscle fiber type in both BL and BH, regardless of muscle type; however, HW had the highest composition of type I compared to the other types (IIA, IIAX, and IIX) in PM. Higher total fiber density was observed in the LL and PM muscles of HW than in those of BL and BH. Meat quality and muscle fiber characteristics of BL and BH were distinct from those of HW.
Recent epidemiological observations suggested beneficial effects of dietary fiber on man's health. The obsective of this study was to obtain the dietary fiber reference data of mushrooms. The dietary fiber contents of six different mushrooms (Cornellus edodes, Auricularia auriculajudae, Gyrophora esculanta, Agaricus bisporus, Pleurotus ostreatus, Collybia velutipes) were analyzed by Southgate method, modified neutral detergent fiber (NDF) method and Food Research Institute (FRI) method. Duplicate sample were used for each determination. The mean values of total dietary fiber by Southgate method, modified NDF method and FRI method were respectively $20.08\pm1.45g$/100g dry weight, $20.24\pm1.85g$/100g dry weight and $21.5\pm2.70g$/100g dry weight. The mean values of all mushroom samples by FRI method were significantly different from the mean values of the samples by modified NDF method and Southgate method. However, there was no difference in the mean values of the samples between modified NDF method and Southgate method. By Southgate method, total dietary fiber of mushrooms composed of 1.7-3.1% soluble fiber, 47.0-66.6% hemicellulose, 28.4-57.7% cellulose and 0.9-3.3% lignin. By modified NDF method, total dietary fiber of mushrooms composed of 61.8-79.1% hemicellulose, 5.4-32.9% cellulose and 4.5- l5.5% lignin. Therefore, dietary fiber contents of mushrooms were mainly hemicellulose. Our values for total dietary fiber for six mushrooms were 2~4 times higher than crude fiber in textbook.
An experiment of one-year duration was conducted on sixteen adult male German Angora rabbits under sub-temperate Himalayan conditions, to assess the effect of seasons on their body weight, wool production and quality, plane of nutrition and the digestibilities of nutrients. The daily meteorological attribute viz. minimum and maximum temperature; relative humidity and rainfall were recorded during winter (October to March), summer (April to June) and rainy (July to September) seasons. Biological parameters viz. body weight at the time of shearing, wool yield of individual rabbit, quality attributes of wool, fortnightly dry matter intake, chemical composition of feed and fodder and digestibilities of nutrients were recorded. Average minimum and maximum ambient temperature during winter, summer and rainy seasons were 4.6${\pm}$1.9 and 21.4${\pm}$2.8; 13.6${\pm}$2 and 30.3${\pm}$2; and 20.0${\pm}$1.4 and $31.0{\pm}1.8^{\circ}C$, respectively. The average relative humidity and total rainfall during winter, summer and rainy season were 69.5${\pm}$2.9% and 74.7${\pm}$21.8 mm; 58.6${\pm}$2.2% and 38.1${\pm}$18.1 mm; and 69${\pm}$4.2% and 104.0${\pm}$43.7 mm, respectively. The body weight of rabbits increased during all seasons, however, the maximum average daily weight gain of 3.47${\pm}$0.1 g was observed during the rainy season. The wool yield differed significantly (p$\leq$0.05) among different seasons with highest (140.4${\pm}$10 g) and lowest (108.5${\pm}$6.9 g) during winter and summer, respectively. The wool yield during the rainy season was 123.3${\pm}$5.2 g. The wool quality attributes revealed non-significant differences for staple length, fiber diameter, medulation percent, percent pure fibers and percent guard hairs. Plane of nutrition revealed significant (p$\leq$0.05) differences for concentrate intake. The concentrate intake was highest during winter (124.4${\pm}$2.6 g) followed by summer (86.8${\pm}$8.9 g) and rainy (80.7${\pm}$11.8 g) seasons. The reverse trend was observed in roughage intake with significantly (p${\leq}$0.05) lower intake during winter and highest during summer months. As a result total dry matter intake during different seasons was similar. Significant differences (p${\leq}$0.05) were observed for digestibilities of crude protein, crude fiber, ether extract, acid detergent fiber and cellulose. Digestibility of crude protein was highest during winter whereas the digestibilities of crude fiber, ether extract, acid detergent fiber and cellulose remained higher during the rainy season. During the winter season, the dry matter used for producing 100 g of wool was substantially lower than during other seasons and was concluded to be the best season for production of Angora wool under subtemperate Himalayan conditions.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the liquid waste from methane fermentation on chemical components, digestible dry matter and net energy of pasture mixtures of orchard grass, tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and ladino clover. The total crude proteins and crude ashes increased with the application of liquid waste, but N-free extracts decreased somewhat and it didn't affect the content of crude fat and crude fiber. Amounts of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber increased with increasing application of liquid waste and the content of cellulose in cell-wall constituents decreased, but hemicellulose increased. The digestible dry matter was produced 405 kg/10a at optimum application of 42 MT/10a liquid waste compared to NPK check plot of 233 kg/10a. The starch value and net energy lactation were 291.3 KStE and 3450 MJ-NEL respectively indicating that the optimum application of liquid waste increased their values.
An experiment was conducted with day-old 300 commercial male broiler chicks (Arbor Acres$^{(R)}$) to evaluate the efficacy of crude phytase preparerations produced from a culture of Aspergillus ficcum. The experiment consisted of five dietary treatments; T1, com-soy control diet with 0.45% non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) for starter period and 0.35% NPP for grower period; T2, control - 0.1% NPP; T3, control 0.2% NPP; T4, T3+600 U of crude phytase (broth+cell); and T5, T3+600 U of crude phytase (broth). The body weight gain, feed intake, and feed/gain of chickens fed T1 diet was highest (p<0.01) among treatments. BW gain and feed intake of T4 and T5 were greater than those of T3 but were less than those of T1 and T2. T3 was highest in mortality among treatments. Decreasing the NPP level lowered availability of DM, crude ash, ether extract, crude fiber, Zn, and Fe but supplementation of crude phytase preparations improved the availability of these nutrients as well as those of Ca, P and Cu. Excretion of P and Cu significantly decreased as the NPP level in the diet decreased. Further reduction of P and Cu excretion and reduction of Ca, Mg and Fe excretion were achieved by supplementation of crude phytase preparations. The serum concentrations of Ca, P, Mg, Zn, Fe, and Cu were significantly increased by crude phytase supplementation. The weight and length of tibia, and contents of crude ash, Ca, P, Mg, and Zn were adversely affected by lowering NPP level but partially recovered by supplementation of crude phytase preparations. In conclusion, lowering NPP level in the broiler diet significantly depressed the performance. Supplementation of crude phytase preparations produced from Aspergillus ficuum could partially recover the depression.
