Antimicrobial activity of various extracts of Xanthium strumarium L. was tested against 25 strains of bacteria, yeast and fungus. The crude ethylacetate extract exhibited strong growth inhibition to the tested strains with the exception of partial Gram-negative bacteria. The property of antimicrobial compound was very stable under heat treatment at $120^{\circ}C$, but it was unstable in acid (pH 3.0) and alkali (pH 10.0) treatment. The antimicrobial compounds were purified by boiling water extraction, ethylacetate extraction, charcoal column chromatography, silica gel column chro- matography and reverse phase HPLC. The purified compound A and B were detected in a single peak (each above 98% purity) through the HPLC analysis. The compound A and B showed a strong growth inhibition against Gram-negative and positive bacteria in the agar diffusion method. When tested by the FDA method using the esterase, compound A mainly inhibited the growth of bacteria and compound B showed the growth inhibition of both bacteria and yeasts.
The present study was undertaken to find a protective effect of Coptis Rhizoma Extract on liver injury induced by benzo(a)pyrene in rats. This crude drug significantly suppressed the increase of several biochemical parameters such as transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase in serum and liver and total cholesterol. But there were little changes in elevated serum phospholipid level. The results suggested that Coptis Rhizoma prevent bezo(a)pyrene-induced hepatic injury.
In order to investigate the antitumor components of Korean wild higher fungi, the carpo-phores of Pholiota squarrosa collected in Kaung Nung area were extracted with water by refluxing for eight hours at 80-90.deg. C. The extracts were dialized for six days against distilled water and lyophilized to produce crude polysaccharide powders. They were found to have the antitumor activity against sarcoma 180 implanted in mice. Especially, the inhibition ratio of the extract of Pholiota squarrosa was 78.7% in the dose of 20mg/kg/day for the period of ten days. The tumor in two of the ten mice was completely regressed. The components of these aqueous extracts were found to be polysaccharide and protein. The total polysaccharide was 42% by Anthrone method and the protein was 55% by Lowry-Folin method in the antitumor component of Pholiota squarrosa.

The capacity of micelle formation between astaxanthin and various surfactants was compared. Tween 20 was identified the most suitable surfactant in terms of astaxanthin extraction capacity. The ethylene oxide group of Tween 20 was identified as the most significant factor to increase the HLB value that determined the extraction capacity. The effect of micelle formation condition, such as molar ratio of astaxanthin and Tween 20, pH and ionic strength was also investigated. pH and ionic strength showed no significant effects. Antioxidant activity of astaxanthin was twice of ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ and 4 times of ${\beta} -carotene$. Crude astaxanthin extract from the yeast cell seemed to be less degraded than pure astaxanthin by air and light exposure, probably because of the presence of other carotenoids and lipids. Under the optimal conditions, the molar ratio of micelle formed was found to be 1 : 12 for astaxanthin : Tween 20.
This study was conducted to present the fundamental data on physicochemical properties of chicken foot collagen by the comparison with those from pork skin, which is present used in the factories as evaluate the usability of chicken foot in the industries of collagen production. Moisture content of chicken foot skin (CFS) was higher than that of pork skin (PS), and crude protein content was higher in PS. Content of other compositions was not different in both samples. At the evaluation of the soaking processing, effective time lapsed for soaking the skin in acid solution (acetic acid of 0.1 M) was about 12 hr for efficient extract ion of collagen, when tested by the changes of pH of the soaking solution and the increase of the weight of skins. L-Hydroxyproline of PS was slightly higher than that of CFS. Collagens were loaded in a SDS-PAGE and compared. Separated pattern of collagen of CFS was very similar to that of PS. Major collagen of CFS might be clarified as type I collagen.

Lophatheri Herba, Patriniae Radix, Alli tuberosi Herba, and Menthae Herba have long been used externally for treatment of injuries or inflammations in Korea. This study was carried out to examine the anti-dandruff effect of the mixture made with equal parts of 70%-ethanol extracts of Lophatheri Herba, Patriniae Radix, Allii tuberosi Herba, and Menthae Herba (LPAM) and of each one above, compared with 1%-zinc pyrithione (Standard) used commercially as anti-dandruff. The results showed the mixture was more effective than each crude drug. The 10%-LPAM produced no toxicity in skin reaction test and eye irritation test, and showed significant antimicrobial activity against Pityrosporum ovale, the major cause of dandruff, and also showed significant anti-dandruff and itch-improvement effects on head skin.
The rhizome of Polygonatum robustum Nakai (Liliaceae) has been used as a crude drug for the purpose of tonic and thirst cure in Korea. The dried rhizomes were extracted with hot ether, then the residue was extracted with hot alcohol. 1) The three kinds of chemical constituents, substance, I, II and III were isolated by silicagel column chromatography from ether and alcohol extracts of the rhizomes. Substance I was confirmed as ${\beta}-sitosterol$, $C_{29}H_{50}O$ by mass and IR spectroscopy. Substance II was identified as stigmasterol by GLC. 2) Substance III was obtained by crystallization from the column chromatography of alcohol fraction. It was suggested as diosgenin based on chemical and spectral discussions. 3) The concentration of blood sugar was significantly decreased in the group administered the ether extract with 20% dextrose and adrenaline in comparison to that of 20% dextrose and adrenaline along.
This study was attempted to examine the acute toxicity and the effect of Sopunghwalhul-Tang water extract(SHTE) on analgesic action in mice, anti- inflammatory action in rats and blood pressure in rabbits. The results were as follows; SHTE showed 10% mortality at 2,000mg/kg(p.o.), had significant analgesic activity in the pain caused by 0.7% acetic acid and was shown to have significant anti-inflammatory activity in the edema-induced by 5% acetic acid at 450mg/kg. SHTE given into a ear vein of rabbits produced a dose-related vasodepressur responses. SHTE-induced hypotension was significantly inhibited by pretreatment with atropine, but was not affected by chlorisondamine, phentolamine, propranolol, and dephenhydramine.
The crude methanol extract of the fruits of Amomum tsao-ko (Zingiberaceae) showed cytotoxic activity. Bioactivity-guided separation led to the isolation of a diarylheptanoid, tsaokoarylone [7-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-hepta-4E,6E-dien-3-one] (2). 2 showed cytotoxicity at 4.9 and 11.4 $\mu$g/mL ($IC_{50}$) against human nonsmall cell lung cancer A549 and human melanoma SK-Mel-2, respectively, determined by SRB colorimetric method. During purification-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4-hydroxyhexan-2-one (4) together with three known diarylheptanoids was also isolated. Their structures were determined from interpretation of spectroscopic data (IR, UV, MS, and NMR) and synthesis confirmed the structure of 2.
The crude extract of Saussurea lappa displayed significant lethality to brine shrimp larvae. Investigation of the causative components by bioactivity-directed fractionation resulted in the isolation of three $C_17$-polyene alcohols. Based on various nmr spectral data, these compounds were identified as shikokiols which had been previously isolated from Cirsium nipponicum and/or Centaurea aegyptica. These $C_17$-polyene alcohols exhibited moderate cytotoxicities against the human tumor cell lines, A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, XF498, and HCT15.
