  • The properties of polyethylene materials exhibit good insulation and radiation resistance, but exhibit poor flame resistance. Flame retardant properties of the polyethylene were improved by the radiation induced grafting or crosslinking. When the various flame retardants were fixed onto polyethylene, the amount of fixation in grafting was increased with the increase of radiation dosages. In the case of grafting, it is necessary for high grafting yield that the polyethylene films were swelled before irradiation with ${\gamma}$-rays or electron beams. It is the suitable method for the fixation of flame retardant that polyethylene samples were blended with various flame retardants at 1$25^{\circ}C$ and then blended polymers were crosslinked by the electron beams at room temperature.

  • It is important in the durable water and oil repellent finishing for wool fabric what kinds of water-repellent agents will be used. Water repellent agents and its concentration were aleady chosen in the previous paper, one of the crosslinking agents which has less damages(harsh handle or yellowing) to the treated fabrics was a low molecular weight urethane-based resins(eg. Elastron BN-11). In repellent finishing, fabrics were padded in a bath which contained aqueous solution of water-repellent agents, and crosslinking agents, and wetting agents, followed by drying and curing. The most suitable treating condition for excellent repellency and durability to dry-cleaning was as follows : Fabrics are padded at liquor pick-up ratio of 50%, with aqueous solution which contained $30g/\ell$ of water-repellent agents, and $1g/\ell$ of crosslinking agents, and 40g/s of wetting agents. And the padded fabrics were dried at $110^\circ{C}$ for 1 minute, and cured at $160^\circ{C}$ for 1 minute. For the fabrics, water and oil repellencies and durability to repeated dry-cleanings were observed. For enhancing the durability to dry-cleaning, the role of crosslinking agents was important for they bonds water-repellent agents and fibers to 3-dimensional net structure. Therefore, the most suitable drying and curing conditions should be selected according to the kinds of crosslinking agents.

  • PVA films were crosslinked with dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea (DMDHEU) and three polycarboxylic acids of butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA), citric acid and malic acid Different factors influencing the crosslinking treatment with BTCA were investigated including BTCA and sodium hypophosphite (SHP) concentration, curing temperature and time. The cured films was extracted with boiling water and gel fraction was calculated based on weight change of the PVA films. The gel fraction of PVA films increased with increasing curing temperature and time. And the resistance to water and thermal stability of the crosslinked PVA films improved with the BTCA crosslinking treatment. While crosslinking with citric acid gave the highest gel fraction among the crosslinkers, crosslinking with malic acid showed the highest absorbancy in 0.9% saline solution, which was attributed to lower crosslink density and high number-average molecular weight between crosslinks. The superabsorbent PVA films could be prepared by adjusting the crosslinking condition of PVA with polycarboxilic acids.

  • This study was to investigate the effect of main monomer, butyl acrylate instead of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, of acrylic PSAs on adhesive properties. The copolymers of butyl acrylate, acrylic acid and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate were synthesized and their adhesive properties were investigated after crosslinking with two different agents. Comparing to 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate-based one which has branch-like side groups, butyl acrylate-based PSA with linear side groups show poor adhesive properties. In case of crosslinking agent, epoxy-typed agent than isocyanate-typed one showed better properties than isocyanate-typed one because epoxy-typed agent has more crosslinking sites and produces more flexible bonds, ester and ether, than isocynate-typed one. Most adhesive properties of PSAs were increased with acid content.

  • Toluene-free pressure sensitive adhesives were synthesized by using butyl acrylate (BA), 2-hydroxy ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid (AA) as monomers and ethyl acetate as a solvent. The polymerization recipes were designed by changing 1, 3, 5 part per hundreds monomer (phm) of AA content on the basis of 100 BA parts. Two crosslinking agents, ethyl glycol diglycidyl ether (EDGE) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) were added to the synthesized polymers to increase adhesion due to crosslinking. In the measurement of properties, holding power, peel strength, and initial tackiness increased with AA content due to crosslinking between carboxyl group in AA and epoxy group in EDGE and isocyanate group in IPDI. In the comparison of two crosslinking agents, EDGE showed better in the three properties than IPDI by better reaction of epoxy group of EDGE to carboxyl group of AA.

  • Five solution styrene butadiene rubber/neodymium butadiene rubber (SSBR/NdBR) composites were manufactured using different ratios of SSBR and NdBR. In this study, the composites were reinforced with NdBR and silica to confirm the physical properties of SSBR used for treads of automobile tires and the dispersibility with silica. The morphologies of the rubber composites were observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The crosslinking behaviors of the composites were tested using a rubber process analyzer (RPA), and the abrasion resistances were tested using a National Bureau of Standards (NBS) abrasion tester. The hardness values, tensile strengths, and cold resistances of the composites were also tested according to ASTM standards. Increased NdBR content yielded composites with excellent crosslinking properties, abrasion resistances, hardnesses, tensile strengths, and cold resistances. The crosslinking point increased due to the double bond in NdBR, thereby increasing the degree of crosslinking in the composites. The NdBR-reinforced composites exhibited excellent abrasion resistances, which is explained as follows. In SSBR, a breakage is permanent because a resonance structure between styrene and SSBR forms when the molecular backbone is broken during the abrasion process. However, NdBR forms an additional crosslink due to the breakdown of the molecular backbone and high reactivity of the radicals produced. In addition, the low glass transition temperature (Tg) of NdBR provided the rubber composites with excellent cold resistances.

  • The crosslinking behavior of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) containing eight acrylate groups in a cage form in ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) peroxide crosslinking, the effect on mechanical properties, and the thermal stability were investigated. An EPDM/POSS composite material was prepared by mixing 0 to 12 parts per hundreds of rubber (phr) of POSS per 100 phr of rubber by content and adding a peroxide crosslinking agent. As a result of crosslinking properties, it was found that the acrylate group of POSS was activated by peroxide and improved the peroxide crosslinking efficiency. Although the dispersion stability of POSS in EPDM/POSS composites was poor, the fracture strength, elongation and thermal stability were improved.

  • In this study, a crosslinked poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) [SBS] block copolymers were prepared by using gamma ray irradiation method. The effects of various radiation doses on the degree of crosslinking, thermo property, and morphology of crosslinked SBS block copolymer were investigated. The degree of crosslinking of crosslinked SBS block copolymers were measured by gel-fraction and FT-IR. It was found that the degree of crosslinking of crosslinked SBS block copolymers increases with increase of the irradiation dose while the TGA result shows that the initial degradation temperature of irradiated SBS block copolymer was shifted to lower temperature with increasing irradiation dose. These results indicate that degradation reaction also occurs when SBS block copolymer is exposed to gamma ray irradiation for crosslinking reaction. The SAXS and FE-SEM results indicate that the phase separation of the styrene block and butadiene block was reduced with increasing irradiation dose.

  • Dyeing properties and crosslinking effect of bifunctional reactive dyes on chitosan fiber were investigated to improve the stability of chitosan fiber against the mild acidic solution and the wet processing. Chitosan fibers were crosslinked with epichlorohydrin for comparing purpose, and dyed with C. I. Reactive Red 194, C. I. Reactive Blue 50, and the reactive dye having two $\alpha$-bromoacrylamide groups at various concentrations. The initial dyeing rates of reactive dyes are rapid and chitosan fibers absorb the relatively large amount of dyes. The chitosan fibers dyed with these dyes show the low degree of swelling and the low solubility in 1 % acetic acid solution and also represent the higher thermal stability The reactive dye with two $\alpha$-bromoacrylamide groups shows higher crosslinking effect than other dyes.

  • The structural defects, impurities, degree of crosslinking and shrinkage of 38 field-aged distribution cables have been analyzed. For the comparison of data, 9 new cables were also subjected to an analysis. It is observed that the structural defects and degree of crosslinking show a radial profile. The structural defects are different depending on the manufacturer. A large amount of impurities is present in the insulation shield, which hold true for the new cables manufactured recently. The degree of crosslinking near both shields is lower than that at the central region of the insulation layer. It was also found that, in some cal)toes, the ins난lation was not fully crosslinked. The shrinkage of field-aged cables is higher than that of new cables.
