Polyester was prepared through the esterification reaction between watsepaper liquefied by ethylene glycol and carboxylic acid. Liquefaction was carried out at the previously determined condition of 100 minutes, $160^{\circ}C$, and 3% sulfuric acid, and the hydroxyl value of the liquefied product was 411 mg KOH/g. In order to remove bubbles produced during the curing step, the method to introduce a slight nitrogen stream into reaction vessel and/or the method to preheat a polyester film at $85^{\circ}C$ before curing step were used alone or in combination. But if curing temperature was $130^{\circ}C$, simple method to cure a film for 5 hours at $130^{\circ}C$ without using both methods was found to be most effective. The polyesters prepared with various carboxylic acids showed significant different physical properties, and maleic acid was best among them. Also, the effect of reaction time and temperature, C/H (carboxyl group/hydroxyl group) ratio, and type of additive on the crosslinkage of polyester was investigated. Lithium hydroxide or citric acid as additive was used to enhance the crosslinkage of polyester and citric acid was proved to be much more effective than lithium hydroxide. The effect of reaction temperature on the crosslinkage was marginal, but the crosslinkage decreased above $130^{\circ}C$. The crosslinkage was 86% when the polyester was prepared at an optimum condition such as $130^{\circ}C$ and 15 minutes of reaction condition, 1.5 of C/H ratio, $130^{\circ}C$ and 5 hours of curing condition, and 10% addition of citric acid.
This research was to investigate the polyester preparation using waste ethylene glycol (EG) generated from the wastepaper pretreatment process. Waste EG was obtained from using EG five times repeatedly in the pretreatment of wastepaper. The hydroxyl value of the waste EG was 441 mg KOH/g and its composition was 0.68% cellulose, 6.5% hemicellulose, 6.1% lignin, and 86.7% EG. Maleic acid was used as carboxylic acid. The effect of reaction temperature and time except carboxyl group/hydroxyl group ratio on the crosslinkage of the prepared polyester was marginal. Citric acid, lithium hydroxide and dicumyl peroxide were used as additive or catalyst to enhance the crosslinkage of polyester. Among them, 10% of citric acid was found to be most effective. The crosslinkage was 86% when the polyester was prepared at an optimum condition such as $130^{\circ}C$ and 15 minutes, 1.5 of C/H ratio, and 10% of citric acid, and its insoluble percentage in boiling water for 6 hours was 47%. The weight loss of the prepared polyester was approximately 40% when it was buried in damp soil for 5 months, indicating that it is readily biodegradable. This results can provide some information for future development of wastepaper pretreatment by organic solvent.
Ion exchange resins have been synthesized from chloromethylated styrene-1,4-divinylbenzene (DVB) with 1%, 2%, 5% and 15%-crosslinkage and macrocyclic ligand of $OenNdien-H_4$ by copolymerization. The adsorption characteristics of uranium (${UO_2}^{2+}$), potassium ($K^+$) and neodymium ($Nd^{3+}$) metallic ions have been investigated. The synthesis of these resins was confirmed by content of chlorine, element analysis, and IR-spectrum. The effects of pH, time, and crosslinkage on adsorption of metallic ions were also studied. The uranium ion showed the fast adsorption on the resins above pH 3. The optimum equilibrium time for the adsorption of metallic ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in methanol solution was in increasing order uranium (${UO_2}^{2+}$) > potassium ($K^+$) > neodymium ($Nd^{3+}$) ion. Moreover, the adsorption was increased with the crosslinkage concentration in order of 1%, 2%, 5% and 15%-crosslinkage resin.
Cryptand resins have been synthesized from 1-aza-18-crown-6 macrocyclic ligand attached to styrene (2th petroleum in 4th class hazardous materials) divinylbenzene copolymer with crosslinkage of 1%, 2%, 10%, and 18% by substitution reaction. The synthesis of these resins was confirmed by the content of chlorine, element analysis, surface area (BET), and IR-spectroscopy. The effects of pH, time and crosslinkage on adsorption of metal ion from water fire extinguishing agentby synthetic resin adsorbent were investigated. Metal ions showed a great adsorption over pH 3 and adsorption equilibriumof metal ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in water was in the increasing order of sodium ($Na^{1+}$) > zinc ($Zn^{2+}$) > chromium ($Cr^{3+}$) ion. The adsorption was in the order of 1%, 2%, 10%, and 18% crosslinkage resin.
Resins were synthesized by mixing 1-aza-15-crown-5 macrocyclic ligand attached to styrene (2th petroleum in 4th class hazardous materials) and divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer with crosslinkage of 1%, 2%, 8%, and 16% by substitution reaction. The characteristic of these resins was confirmed by content of chlorine, element analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), surface area (BET), and IR-spectroscopy. The effects of pH, time, dielectric constant of solvent and crosslinkage on adsorption of metal ion by the synthetic resin adsorbent were investigated. The metal ion showed a fast adsorption on the resins above pH 3. The optimum equilibrium time for adsorption of metallic ions was about two hours. The adsorption selectivity determined in ethanol was in an increasing order of uranium $(UO_2^{2+})$ > lead $(Pb^{2+})$ > chromium $(Cr^{3+})$ ion. The adsorption was in the order of 1%, 2%, 8%, and 16% crosslinkage resin and adsorption of resin decreased in proportion to the order of dielectric constant of solvents.
Azacrown resins were synthesized by mixing 1-aza-12-crown-4 macrocyclic ligand into styrene (2th petroleum in 4th class hazardous materials) divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer with crosslinkage of 1%, 2%, 5% and 10% by substitution reaction. The synthesis of these resins was confirmed by content of chlorine, element analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), surface area (BET), and IR-spectroscopy. The effects of pH, time, crosslinkage of resins and dielectric constant of solvent on adsorption of metal ions by resin adsorbent were investigated. Metal ions showed a great adsorption over pH 3 and adsorption equilibrium of metal ions was about two hours. In addition, adsorptive selectivity of metals on the resin in ethanol solvent was increased in the order of ${UO_2}^{2+}$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Sm^{3+}$ ion and adsorption of uranium ion was decreased with increase of crosslinkage such as 1%, 2%, 5% and 10% and was inversely proportional to the order of dielectric constant of solvents.
In this research, we investigated hydrolysis of the ester crosslinking on cotton fabric treated with polymer of maleic acid(PMA), citric acid(CA) and combination of polymer of maleic acid and citric acid using Fourier transform infrared spectroscophy. The rate of hydrolysis of the ester crosslinkage increased with pH regardless of the type of polycarboxylic acid used and even after hydrolysis for 256 hour in pH 13_4 solution, the treated fabric retained $10-20\%$ ester crosslinkage. The durability to alkaline hydrolysis of the ester crosslinkage formed by CA was lower than that of by PMA and combination of poly(maleic acid) and citric acid indicating that the ester formed by CA on the cotton fabric is more susceptible to hydrolysis than that formed by PMA and combination of PMA and CA. The total amount of ester and polycarboxylic acid molecules removed from fabric increased with increasing hydrolysis time but the rate of hydrolysis of ester linkage were higher than that of removal of polycarboxylic acid molecule from the fabric. The characteristic of hydrolysis of fabric treated with combination of PMA and CA was related with the mixing ratio of PMA and CA in treating fabric.
A novel method to prepare polyester from wastepaper through liquefaction and crosslinking stages was studied. At the first stage, the liquefaction of wastepaper was carried out in the presence of ethylene glycol under acidic conditions. The factors that affect on liquefaction yield were found to be reaction time, temperature, and acid concentration, and their ranges were 60~120 minutes, $150{\sim}170^{\circ}C$, and 2~4%, respectively. The optimum condition was found to be 100 minutes, $160^{\circ}C$, and 3% sulfuric acid concentration, and the liquefaction yield at this condition was 67%. At the second stage, polyester was prepared from the liquefied wastepaper obtained at the optimum liquefaction condition by crosslinking with succinic anhydride. The effect of reaction time and carboxylic group/hydroxyl group ratio on crosslinkage were investigated at conditions covering 30~50 minutes of reaction time and 1.5~2.5 of carboxylic group/hydroxyl group ratio. The crosslinkages of polyester prepared were 80~90%, which were almost same regardless of reaction conditions.

This study represents the synthetic characteristics of styrene-DVB copolymer which is used as a catalyst support for the removal of tritium in CANDU. To evaluate the effect of solvent on the styrene-DVB polymeric support, the solvating power dependent on various kinds and composition of solvents was calculated. In order to synthesize the macroreticular type polymer bead, the following conditions are needed; solvating power should be higher than 1 for 20% of crosslinkage and higher than 3 for 40% of crosslinkage. Stabilization of organic monomers at about $40^{\circ}C$ for more than 2 hours is prerequisite. Removal of solvent prior to drying is preferred for the post-treatment of the bead. The polymer particle size was increased by lowering concentration of surfactant and stirring speed.
Chitin is known as biodegradable natural polymer. In spite of various application of chitin derivatives from waste marine sources, commercial use of chitin has been limited due to high resistance to chemicals and the absense of proper solvents. We chitin prepared through the decalcification, bleaching and deproteination from Protunus trituberculatus shells by change of Hackman's method. Also, Microcrystalline chitin made by hydrolysis that was reduce made of resistance solvents used by dilute hydrochloric acid, ultrasonic and hydrogen peroxide. Crosslinked chitin derivatives were preparaed from chitin with crosslink agents(epichlorohydrin, 1,3-dichloropropanol) follwed by crosslinkage at 6C position. The effects of these parameters on chitin dervatives were invastigated by IR, DSC, XRD, BET, PSA and SEM. SEM analysis showed that both chitin and crosslinked chitin had a particle shaped morphology.
