Damage of Composite Laminates by Low-Velocity Impact (저속충격에 의한 복합재료 적층판의 손상)

  • This study was investigated the nondestructive characteristics of the damage caused by low-velocity impact on symmetric cross-ply laminates. These laminates were $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]{_{16s,}}\;{_{24s,}}\;{_{32s,}}\;{_{48s}}$, that is, the thickness was 2, 3, 4 and 6 mm. The impact machine, model 8250 Dynatup Instron, was used a drop-weight type with gravity. The impact velocities used in experiment were 0.75, 0.90, 1.05, 1.20 and 1.35 m/sec. The load and deformation were increased as impact velocity increase. Even if the load increased with laminates thickness in same impact velocity, the deformation decreased. The extensional velocity was a quick as laminate thickness increase in same impact velocity and as impact velocity increase in same laminate thickness. In ultrasonic scans, damaged area was represented an dimmed zone. This is due to the fact that the wave, after having been partially reflected by the defects, has not enough energy to tough the oposite side or to come back from it. The damaged laminate areas were different according to the laminate thickness and the impact velocity. The extensional velocities became lower in if direction and higher in $0^{\circ}$ direction when the size of the defects increases. But, it was difficult to draw any conclusion for the extensional velocities in $45^{\circ}$ direction.

  • The study investigated the nondestructive characteristics of damage, caused by law-velocity impact, on symmetric cross-ply laminates, composed of [0o/90o]16s, 24s, 32s, 48s.   • Fourier transform has been one of the most common tools to study the frequency characteristics of signals. With the Fourier transform alone, however, it is difficult to tell whether signal's frequency contents evolve in time or not. Except for a few special cases, the frequency contents of most signals encountered in the real world change with time. Time-frequency analysis methods are developed recently to overcome the drawbacks of Fourier transform, which can represent the information of signals in time and frequency at the same time. In this study, damage process of a cross-ply carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) under monotonic tensile loading was characterized by acoustic emission. Different kinds of CFRP specimens were used to determine the characteristics of AE signals. Time-frequency analysis methods were employed for the analysis of fracture mechanisms in CFRP such as mix cracking, debonding, fiber fracture and delamination.

A Study on Mode 1 and Mode 2 Interlaminar Fracture Toughness of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (탄소섬유 복합재료의 모드1 및 모드 2 층간파괴인성치에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper to investigate mode I and mode II critical energy release rates, G sub(IC) and G sub(IIC), three prepregs which are domestic products are used. Those are used for the unidirectional composites, but only one is used for the cross-ply laminate composites which is molded [0/90] sub(6s), [0/45] sub(6s) and [0/45/90] sub(6s). The value of G sub(IC) is almost same when modified three calculating methods are applied. The highest value of G sub(IC) at crack initiation is obtained at the [0/90] sub(6s) interlaminar and the lowest one is at the [0/45/90] sub(6s) interlaminar.

The Effects of Physical Aging of PSF/AS4 Laminate on Fatigue (PSF/AS4 복합재료의 가속노화가 피로강도에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of aging on fatigue of PSF/AS4 laminates tvas studied using the new energy release rate analysis. The analysis by the variational mechanics has been useful in providing fracture mechanics interpretation of matrix microcracking in cross-ply laminates. This paper describes the changes of the critical energy release rate ${\Delta}Gmc$(microcracking toughness) about the variation of the aging period during fatigue loading. The master plot by modified Pans-law gives a characterization of a material system's resistance to microcrack formation. PSF/AS4 $[0/902]_s$ laminates were aged at four different temperatures based on the glass transition temperature for 60 days. At all temperatures, the toughness decreased with aging time. The decrease of the toughness at higher temperature was faster than at lower temperature. To assess the effects of aging on fatigue, the unaged laminates were compared with the laminates which were aged for 60 days at $170^{\circ}C$ near $180^{\circ}C\;T_g$. The slope of dD/dN versus A 6u, of the aged laminates was lower than that of the unaged laminates. There was a significant shift of the aged data to formation of microcracks at the lower values of ${\Delta}G_m$.

Static Bending Strength Performances of Hybrid Laminated Woods Composed of Wood-Wood Based Boards (목재와 목질보드 복합적층재의 휨강도성능)

  • To study an effective use of woods, three-ply hybrid laminated woods instead of crosslaminated woods which are composed of spruce in the face and three kinds of wood-based boards (MDF, PB, OSB) in the core were manufactured, and the effect of constitution elements for the core laminae on bending strength performances was investigated. Bending modulus of elasticity (MOE) of hybrid laminated woods had the highest values for the hybrid laminated wood types arranging OSB laminae in the core, and had the lowest values for those arranging MDF laminae in the core. These values were higher than those of various cross-laminated woods. The estimated bending MOEs of the hybrid laminated woods which were composed of perpendicular-direction lamina of spruce in the faces were similar to their measured values, regardless of wood-based boards in the core. However, those of the hybrid laminated woods which were composed of parallel-direction lamina of spruce in the faces had much higher values than those of their measured values, and it was necessary to revise the measured values. Bending modulus of rupture (MOR) of the hybird laminated woods had the highest value for those arranging OSB laminae in the core, and had the lowest values for those arranging PB laminae in the core unlike the bending MOE. By hybrid laminating, the anisotropy of bending strength performances was markedly decreased, and the differences of strength performances among wood-based boards were also considerably decreased.
