  • In recent literature on traffic scheduling, the combination of the two-dimensional discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) and the Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) is used to analyze the capacity of VoIP traffic in the cognitive radio system. The performance of the cognitive radio system solely depends on the accuracy of spectrum sensing techniques, the minimization of false alarms, and the scheduling of traffic channels. In this paper, we only emphasize the scheduling of traffic channels (i.e., traffic handling techniques for the primary user [PU] and the secondary user [SU]). We consider the following three different traffic models: the cross-layer analytical model, M/G/1(m) traffic, and the IEEE 802.16e/m scheduling approach to evaluate the performance of the VoIP services of the cognitive radio system from the context of blocking probability and throughput.

  • This paper examines quantile dependence and directional predictability between the foreign exchange market and the stock market in Korea. Instead of adopting a multivariate model such as a vector autoregressive model, a multivariate GARCH model or a combination of both models, we apply the cross-quantilogram recently proposed by Han et al. (2016). Considering various quantile ranges, we investigate various spillover effects between two markets. Our findings show that there exists an asymmetric bi-directional spillover between two markets and the interdependence between two markets implies that one market has significant predictive power on the other.

  • In this paper, a style-based approach to translating literary texts is introduced and used. The aim of the study is to work out a stylistic approach to translating literary texts from Arabic into English. The approach proposed in the current study is a combination of four major stylistic approaches, namely linguistic stylistics, literary stylistics, affective stylistics and cognitive stylistics. It has been shown from data analysis that by adopting a style-based approach that can draw from the four stylistic approaches, translators, as special text readers, can easily derive a better understanding and appreciation of texts, in particular literary texts. Further, it has been shown that stylistics as an approach is objective in terms of drawing evidence from the text to support the argument for the important stylistic features and their functions. However, it loses some of its objectivity and becomes dependent and subjective.

  • Cross fertility between wild Japanese quail and domestic quail was explored in an experiment conducted on 18(3♂, 15♀)wild Japanese quails in Weishan Lake area, 18(3♂, 15♀)medium-sized domestic quails and 18(3♂, 15♀)pint-sized domestic quails, which were divided into nine groups. This study demonstrated that wild quail could succeed in crossing with domestic quail, producing fertilized eggs and hatching first filial generation. The findings indicated that there were no reproduction isolation between the wild Japanese quail and domestic quail, and that the best cross combination was between wild male quail and medium-sized domestic female quail, in which the fertility rate and hatchability of fertilized eggs amounted to 42.86% and 29.63% respectively. Based on the results, a new way could be adopted to protect, exploit and utilize genetic resources of wild quail.

  • This paper presents a radio frequency-to-direct current (RF-to-DC) converter for special RF power harvesting application at 915 MHz. The major featured components of the proposed RF-to-DC converter is the combination of a cross-coupled rectifier and an active diode: first, the cross-coupled rectifier boosts the input voltage to desired level, and an active diode blocks the reverse current, respectively. A prototype was implemented using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology, and the performance was proven from the fact that the targeted RF harvesting system's full-operation with higher power efficiency; even if the system's input power gets lower (e.g., from nominal 0 to min. -12 dBm), the proposed RF-to-DC converter constantly provides 1.47 V, which is exactly the voltage level to drive follow up system components like DC-to-DC converter and so on. And, maximum power conversion efficiency is 82 % calculated from the 0 dBm input power, 2.3 mA load current.

  • In inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging, An ISAR autofocusing algorithm is essential to obtain well-focused ISAR images. Traditional methods have relied on the approximation that the phase error due to target motion is a function of the cross-range dimension only. However, in the stepped-frequency radar system, it tends to become a two-dimensional function of both down-range and cross-range, especially when target's movement is very fast and the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) is low. In order to remove the phase error along down-range, this paper proposes a method called SAEM (subarray averaging and entropy minimization) [1] that uses a subarray averaging concept in conjunction with the entropy cost function in order to find target motion parameters, and a novel 2-D optimization technique with the inherent properties of the proposed entropy-based cost function. A well-focused ISAR image can be obtained from the combination of the proposed method and a traditional autofocus algorithm that removes the phase error along the cross-range dimension. The effectiveness of this method is illustrated and analyzed with simulated targets comprised of point scatters.

  • A three-dimensional formulation is proposed to analyze the lateral loading distribution of external actions in high-rise buildings. The method is extended to encompass any combination of bracings, including bracings with open thin-walled cross-sections, which are analyzed in the framework of Timoshenko-Vlasov's theory of sectorial areas. More in detail, the proposed unified approach is a tool for the preliminary stages of structural design. It considers infinitely rigid floors in their own planes, and allows to better understand stress and strain distributions in the different bearing elements if compared to a finite element analysis. Numerical examples, describing the structural response of tall buildings characterized by bracings with different cross-section and height, show the effectiveness and flexibility of the proposed method. The accuracy of the results is investigated by a comparison with finite element solutions, in which the bracings are modelled as three-dimensional structures by means of shell elements.

  • Sponge ball cleaning can generate an abrasion effect, which leads to an attractive increasing in both permeate flux and membrane rejection. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the daily sponge ball cleaning (SBC) on the performance of different UF cross-flow membrane modules integrated with a bioreactor. Two 1"-membrane modules and one 1/2"-membrane module were tested. The parameters measured and controlled are temperature, pH, viscosity, particle size, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total suspended solids (TSS), and permeate flux. The permeate flux could be improved by 60%, for some modules, after 11 days of daily sponge ball cleaning at a transmembrane pressure of 350 kPa and a flow velocity of 4 m/s. Rejection values of all tested modules were improved by 10%. The highest permeate flux of 195 L/㎡.h was achieved using a 1"-membrane module with the aid of its negatively charged membrane material and the daily sponge ball cleaning. In addition, the enhancement in the permeate flux caused by daily sponge ball cleaning improved the energy specific demand for all tested modules. The negatively charged membrane showed the lowest energy specific demand of 1.31 kWh/㎥ in combination with the highest flux, which is a very competitive result.

  • We are currently living in the era of the wide field cosmological surveys, either spectroscopic such as Dark Energy Spectrograph Instrument or photometric such as the Dark Energy Survey or the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. By analyzing the distribution of matter clustering, we can use the growth of structure, in combination with measurements of the expansion of the Universe, to understand dark energy or to test different models of gravity. But we also live in the era of multi-tracer or multi-messenger astrophysics. In particular, during the next decades radio surveys will map the matter distribution at higher redshifts. Like in optical surveys, there are radio imaging surveys such as continuum radio surveys such as the ongoing EMU or spectroscopic by measuring the hydrogen 21cm line. However, we can also use intensity mapping as a low resolution spectroscopic technique in which we use the intensity given by the emission from neutral hydrogen from patches of the sky, at different redshifts. By cross-correlating this maps with galaxy catalogues we can improve our constraints on cosmological parameters and to understand better how neutral hydrogen populates different types of galaxies and haloes. Creating realistic mock intensity mapping catalogues is necessary to optimize the future analysis of data. I will present the mock neutral hydrogen catalogues that we are developing, using the Horizon run 4 simulations, to cross-correlate with mock galaxy catalogues from low redshift surveys and I will show the preliminary results from the first mock catalogues.

  • Objectives: The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of collagen cross-linking agents (CCLAs) used in combination with the adhesive technique in restorative procedures. Materials and Methods: In this systematic review, the authors followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist. An electronic search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, LILACS, and DOSS, up to October 2020. The gray literature was also researched. Only randomized clinical trials were selected. Results: The selection process yielded 3 studies from the 838 retrieved. The addition of CCLAs in the retention of restorations increased the number of events. The postoperative sensitivity scores and marginal adaptation scores showed no significant difference between the CCLA and control groups, and the marginal pigmentation scores showed a significant increase in the CCLA group. There were no caries events in any group throughout the evaluation period. Conclusions: This systematic review showed that there is no clinical efficacy to justify the use of CCLAs in the protocols performed.
