  • The BX composite beam is designed to have the same cross-section regardless of the size of the momentum, which is a disadvantage of the existing steel structure. Combination of the H-beam end compressive material and the H-section steel tensile reinforcement according to the moment size in a single span, It is possible to say that it is an excellent synthesis which increases the performance. When underground and overhead structures are constructed, it is possible to reduce the bending, increase lateral stiffness, reduce construction cost, and simplify joints. The seamability of the joining part is a simple steel composite beam because of the decrease of the beam damping at the center of the beam and the use of the end plate of the new end compressing material. In the case of structures with long span structure and high load, it is advantageous to reduce the material cost by designing large steel which is high in price at less than medium steel.

  • The free vibration characteristics of corrugated laminated composite plates with axial stiffeners is investigated using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The plate is stiffened by beams with open cross-section area. The equivalent homogenization model is used for the corrugated laminated composite plates. This homogenization model is treated a corrugated plate as an orthotropic plate that has different material properties in two perpendicular directions. The motion of equivalent plate is represented on the basis of the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to account for the effect of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation. Stiffeners are considered as discrete elements to predict the local vibration mode to be generated by the presence of stiffeners. To validate the proposed analytical approach, natural frequencies and vibration mode shapes from the analytical method are compared with those from the FEA by ANSYS.

  • Raymond, who adopted Le Corbusier's Errazuris House Project, built Karuizawa Villa by incorporating Japan's aspiration for Western modern architecture and strong convictions regarding the preservation of traditional culture heritage, which were prevalent in Japan at the time. Despite the controversy over his plagiarism, Karuizawa Villa shows several unique architectural characteristics. First, in terms of the arrangement and access system, the villa has a common space that affords a view of the lake by accessing from the mountain side. Second, in terms of spatial composition, the common space is connected to the mesonnette by placing a trail to enable enjoyment of natural scenery. In particular, personal space is planned in the shape of a cross by connecting several surfaces to the outside in order to secure enjoyment of the natural environment. Lastly, in the aspect of structure and materials, both architectural buildings adopted masonry by using natural stone as well as building materials suitable for each region and climate by using logs in constructing the main columns and beams. Through Karuizawa Villa, Raymond is considered to have established his own style by combining the standard of Western modern architecture and the elements of Japanese traditional architecture while valuing local architectural technology.

  • The existence of active material in the environment causes the small-scale systems to be sensitive to the actual environment. Carbon dioxide is one of the active materials that exists a lot in the air conditions of the living environment. However, in some applications, the carbon dioxide-coated is used to improve the performance of systems against the destructive factors such as the corrosion; nevertheless, in the current research, the stability analysis of a carbon dioxide capture mechanism-coated beam is investigated according to the mathematical simulation of a rectangular composite beam utilizing the modified couple stress theory. The composite mechanism of carbon dioxide trapping is made of a polyacrylonitrile substrate that supports a cross-link polydimethylsiloxane gutter layer as the carbon dioxide mechanism trapping. Three novel types of carbon dioxide trapping mechanism involving methacrylate, poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate, and three pedant methacrylates are considered, which were introduced by Fu et al. (2016). Finally, according to introducing the methodology of carbon dioxide (CO2) trapping, the impact of various effective parameters on the stability of composite beams will be analyzed in detail.

  • We developed an accurate and simple vibration model to calculate the natural frequencies and their corresponding vibration modes for multi-span beam bridges with non-uniform cross-sections. A closed set of characteristic functions of a single-span beam was used to construct the vibration modes of the multi-span bridges, which were considered single-span beams with multiple constraints. To simplify the boundary conditions, the restraints were converted into spring constraints. Then the functional of the total energy has the same form as the penalty method. Compared to the conventional penalty method, the penalty coefficients in the proposed approach can be calculated directly, which can avoid the iteration process and convergence problem. The natural frequencies and corresponding vibration modes were obtained via the minimum total potential energy principle. By using the symmetry of the eigenfunctions or structure, the matrix size can be further reduced, which increases the computational efficiency of the proposed model. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach were validated by the finite element method.

  • Recently, many overpasses, highway, and advanced transit systems have been constructed to distribute the traffic congestion, thus small size of curved bridges with small curvature such as ramp structures have been increasing. Many of early curved bridges had been constructed by using straight beams with curved slabs, but curved steel beams have replaced them due to the cost, aesthetic and the advantage in building the section form and manipulating the curvature of beams, thereby large portion of curved bridges were applied with steel box girders. However, steel box girder bridges needs comparatively high initial costs and continuous maintenance such as repainting, which is the one of the reason for increasing the cost. Moreover, I-type steel plate girder which is being studied by many researchers recently, seem to have problems in stability due to the low torsional stiffness, resulting from the section characteristics with thin plate used for web and open section forms. Therefore, in recent studies, researchers have proposed curved precast PSC girders with low cost and could secured safety which could replace the curved steel girder type bridges. Hence, this study developed a Smart Mold system to manufacture efficient curved precast PSC girders. And by using this mold system a 40 m 2-girder bridge was constructed for a static flexural test, to evaluate the safety and performance under ultimate load. At the manufacturing stage, each single girder showed problems in the stability due to the torsional moment, but after the girders were connected by cross beams and decks, the bridge successfully distributed the stress, thereby the stability was confirmed. The static loading test results show that the initial crack was observed at 1,400 kN when the design load was 450 kN, and the load at the allowable deflection by code was 1,800 kN, which shows that the safety and usability of the curved precast PSC bridge manufactured by Smart Mold system is secured.

  • Two parallel wide flange built-up beams are widely used as struts in resisting lateral earth pressure because of the effectiveness in structure and construction. In a certain structural system, the reinforced concrete columns are to be placed at the intersection where two perpendicular beams cross each other, the square part of the joint being filled with concrete. In the punching shear mechanism of the beam-column joint, the radial deformation caused due to shear cracking will be constrained by the spring action of the squarely encompassed beam flanges. As a result, the punching shear strength of the joint concrete can be expected to be increased. To verify this phenomenon experiments have been performed for various constraining elements and distances between columns and constraints. Test results are compared with the approximation analysis formula which has been proposed in this study, based on the code formula. The results calculated by the proposed equation show comparatively close agreement with the punching shear strength detected from the test.

  • In this paper, a local deformation effect in thin-walled box beams is investigated via a finite element modal analysis. The analysis is carried out for single-cell and multi-cell box beam configurations. The single-cell box beam with and without a neck, which mimics a simple wind-turbine blade, is analyzed first. The results obtained by shell elements are compared to those of one-dimensional(1D) beam elements. It is observed that the wall thickness plays a crucial role in the natural frequencies of the beam. The 1D beam analysis deviates from the shell analysis when the wall thickness is either thin or thick. The shell modes(local deformations) are dominant as it becomes thin, whereas the shear deformation effects are significant as it does thick. The analysis is extended to the single-cell box beam with a neck, in which the shell modes are confined to near the neck. Finally the multi-cell box beam with a taper, which is quite similar to real wind-turbine blade configuration, is considered to investigate the local deformation effect. The results reveal that the 1D beam analysis cannot match with the shell analysis due to the local deformation, especially for the lagwise frequencies. There are approximately 5~7% errors even if the number of segments is increased.

  • A piezoresistive silicon acceleration sensor with 8 beams, utilized by an unique silicon micromachining technique using porous silicon etching method which was fabricated on the selectively diffused (111)-oriented $n/n^{+}/n$ silicon subtrates. The width, length, and thickness of the beam was $100\;{\mu}m$, $500\;{\mu}m$, and $7\;{\mu}m$, respectively, and the diameter of the mass paddle (the region suspended by the eight beams) was 1.4 mm. The seismic mass on the mass paddle was formed about 2 mg so as to measure accelerations of the range of 50g for automotive applications. For the formation of the mass, the solder mass was loaded on the mass paddle by dispensing Pb/Sn/Ag solder paste. After the solder paste is deposited, Heat treatment was carried out on the 3-zone reflow equipment. The decay time of the output signal to impulse excitation of the fabricated sensor was observed for approximately 30 ms. The sensitivity measured through summing circuit was 2.9 mV/g and the nonlinearity of the sensor was less than 2% of the full scale output. The output deviation of each bridge was ${\pm}4%$. The cross-axis sensitivity was within 4% and the resonant frequency was found to be 2.15 KHz from the FEM simulation results.

  • Most of studies on existing strengthening methods were mainly on increase of stiffness and strength of shear strengthening to rectangular beam. As concrete of beam and slab is poured simultaneously on the characteristics of construction in reinforced concrete beam-slab structure, adjacent slab uniformed after hardening has T-shaped beam cross section which makes the flange of beam, enhances the stiffness of the beam and widens the area supporting compressive strength, but available data of flexural behavior of T-shaped beam are lacking. In this research the T-shaped beams would be made, then the reinforced effects and structural properties can be estimated according to the kinds of reinforced materials and reinforced position. The conclusions are shown as below. To sum up the experimental results, The specimen which was reinforce by CB embedded inside of concrete indicated excellent resistive behavior, internal force and stiffness when it was destroyed. The steel plate reinforced specimen of stiffness and internal force were increase but it expressed lower reinforce effects because of lowering anchored force between concrete. Fiber sheet strengthening showed superior effects but the interfacial delamination was found due to the lack of anchored force in destruction. So the measure is needed now.
