Brazier effect of single- and double-walled elastic tubes under pure bending

  • The cross sections of hollow cylindrical tubes ovalise under a pure bending condition, and this reduces their flexural stiffness as their curvatures increase. It is important to accurately evaluate this phenomenon, known as the 'Brazier effect', to understand the bending behaviour of the systems considered. However, if the tubes are supported by an elastic medium or foundation, the ovalisation displacements of their cross sections may decrease. From this point of view, the purpose of this research is to analytically investigate the bending characteristics of single- and double-walled elastic tubes contacted by an elastic material by considering the Brazier effect. The Brazier moment, which is the maximum moment-carrying capacity of the ovalised cross section, can be calculated by introducing the strain energy per unit length of the tube in terms of the degree of ovalisation for the tube and the curvature. The total strain energy of the double-walled system is the sum of the strain energies of the outer and inner tubes and that of the compliant core. Results are comparatively presented to show the variation in the degree of ovalisation and the Brazier moment for single- and double-walled tubes.

Sound Absorption Rate and Sound Transmission Loss of CLT Wall Panels Composed of Larch Square Timber Core and Plywood Cross Band

  • The square timbers of larch having cross section of $90mm{\times}90mm$ were glued laterally to be formed $1,200mm{\times}2,400mm$ panels which were used as cores for CLT wall panels. Then, structural plywood panels having size of $1,200mm{\times}2,400mm$ were used as cross band covering the small square timber cores to manufacture CLT wall panels. The sound absorption rate of CLT wall panels and polyester board attached CLT wall panels were investigated. The mean sound absorption coefficients of the former and the latter in the frequency range of 100-6400 Hz were 0.21 and 0.74, respectively. The noise reduction coefficients (NRC) of those were 0.21 and 0.40, respectively. Also, the mean sound transmission loss of CLT wood panel in the frequency range of 50-1600 Hz was 45.12 dB and that value at the frequency of 500 Hz was 42.49 dB. It was suggested that the polyester board attached CLT wall panels could be used as housing wall because of its high sound absorption rate and high sound transmission loss.

  • In this paper presented, a design method of sandwich slab bridge of simple supported made by composite materials. Many of the bridge systems, including the girders and cross-beams, and concrete decks behave as the special orthotropic plates. Such systems with sections, boundary conditions other than Navier or Levy solution types, or with irregular cross sections, analytical solution is very difficult to obtain. Thus, Finite Difference Method is used for analysis of the pertinent problem. For the design of bridge made by the composite materials, cross-section is used the form-core shape because of this shape is economical and profitable, and for output of the stress value used F.D.M. Based the experimental of a composite specialist, an equation expressing the rate of decrease of tensile strength of glass fibers based on increase of mass was obtained. From these equations, one can estimate the rate of tensile strength reduction due to increased size. Tasi-Wu failure criterion for stress space is used. Strength-failure analysis procedure, using these reduced tensile strength, is presented.

Microstructural observation of artificial aggregates at various sintering atmospheres (소성 분위기에 따른 인공골재의 미세구조 관찰)

  • The aggregates made of clay, carbon and $Fe_2O_3$ were prepared to investigate the mechanism of black core formation and the property differences at various sintering atmospheres. The aggregates were sintered at oxidized, neutralized and reduced atmospheres. The specific gravity, absorption rate, percent of black core area were measured at various compositions and sintering atmospheres. The aggregates sintered at oxidized atmosphere showed clear border between shell and black core area. Hence, the aggregates sintered at reduced and neutralized atmospheres showed only black core area in the cross-section of the aggregates. The specific gravity of the aggregates sintered at reduced atmosphere increased with increasing carbon contents and that was the lowest of all aggregates sintered at various atmospheres. Adsorption rate increased with increasing carbon contents at all atmospheres.

Evaluation of Shear Strength of Precast-prestressed Hollow Core Slabs Based on Experiments (실험을 통한 프리캐스트-프리스트레스트 중공슬래브의 전단강도)

  • The weight of concrete could be reduced by using hollow core slabs instead of heavy solid slabs, leading to cost reduction. The long span be also achieved by introducing prestress in hollow core slabs. but the evaluation of shear strength of precast-prestressed hollow core slabs are needed because the cross section is reduced in web and arranging shear reinforcement is not possible. In this study, the shear strength of precast-prestressed hollow core slabs were evaluated based on experimental tests. For this purpose, six full scale specimens were made and tested. The shear strength of the specimens were compared with those evaluated from current design provision(EC2 ACI, EN1168 and AASHTO).

Shear behavior of short square tubed steel reinforced concrete columns with high-strength concrete

  • Six shear-critical square tubed steel reinforced concrete (TSRC) columns using the high-strength concrete ($f_{cu,150}=86.6MPa$) were tested under constant axial and lateral cyclic loads. The height-to-depth ratio of the short column specimens was specified as 2.6, and the axial load ratio and the number of shear studs on the steel shape were considered as two main parameters. The shear failure mode of short square TSRC columns was observed from the test. The steel tube with diagonal stiffener plates provided effective confinement to the concrete core, while welding shear studs on the steel section appeared not significantly enhancing the seismic behavior of short square TRSC columns. Specimens with higher axial load ratio showed higher lateral stiffness and shear strength but worse ductility. A modified ACI design method is proposed to calculate the nominal shear strength, which agrees well with the test database containing ten short square TSRC columns with shear failure mode from this study and other related literature.

Seismic behavior of reinforced concrete interior beam-column joints with beams of different depths

  • Current Design Codes for Reinforced Concrete (RC) interior beam-column joints are based on limited experimental studies on the seismic behavior of eccentric joints. To supplement existing information, an experimental study was conducted that focused on the effect of eccentricity of the deeper beams with respect to the shallow beams. A total of eight one-third scale interior joints with beams of different depths were subjected to reverse cyclic loading. The primary variables in the test specimens were the amount of joint transverse reinforcement and the cross section of the shallow beams. The overall performance of each test assembly was found to be unsatisfactory in terms of joint shear strength, stiffness, energy dissipation and shear deformation. The results indicated that the vertical eccentricity of spandrel beams in this type of joint led to lower capacity in joint shear strength and severe damage of concrete in the joint core. Increasing the joint shear reinforcement was not effective to alter the failure mode from joint shear failure to beam yielding which is favorable for earthquake resistance design, whereas it was effective to reduce the crack width at the small loading stages. Based on the observed behavior, the shear stress of the joint core was suggested to be kept as low as possible for a safe and practical design of this type of joint.

Bloating Mechanism of Artificial Lightweight Aggregate for Recycling the Waste Glass (폐유리를 재활용한 인공경량골재의 발포기구)

  • The purpose of this study is to improve recycling rate of the waste glasses by investigating bloating mechanism. In this study, we use waste glass(W/G) and hard clay(H/C) as raw materials. The artificial lightweight aggregates were formed by plastic forming($\phi$=10 mm) and sintered by fast firing method at different temperatures(between 700 and $1250^{\circ}C$). The physical properties of the aggregates such as bulk specific gravity, adsorption and microstructure of surface and cross-section are investigated with the sintering temperature and rate of W/G-H/C contents. As the result of the bulk specific gravity graphs, we can found out the inflection point at content of W/G 60 wt%. From the microstructure images, we considered the artificial lightweight aggregates content of W/ G over 60wt% are distributed numerous micro-pores by organic oxidation without Black Core and the artificial lightweight aggregates of W/G below 60 wt% are distributed macro-pores with Black Core.

  • The conventional method to deal with current transformer (CT) Saturation is over dimensioning of the core so that CTs can carry up to 20 times the rated current without exceeding 10% ratio correction. However, this not only reduces the sensitivity of relays as some errors may still be present in the secondary current when a severe fault occurs, but also increases the CT size. This paper presents an algorithm for compensating the distorted secondary current of iron-cored CTs under CT saturation using the magnetization (flux-current : .lambda.-i) curve and its performance is examined for fault currents encountered on a typical 345[kV] Korean transmission system, under a variety of different system and fault conditions. In addition, the results of hardware implementation of the algorithm using a TMS320C10 digital signal processor are also presented. The proposed algorithm can improve the sensitivity of relays to low level internal faults, maximize the stability of relays for external faults, and reduce the required CT core cross-section significantly. Joining of Multi Nodes of a Titanium Bicycle by the Superplastic Hydroforming and Diffusion Bonding Technology (티타늄 자전거의 다중 조인트 접합을 위한 초소성 하이드로포밍과 확산 접합 기술)

  • The superplastic forming/diffusion bonding process has been developed to fabricate a core frame structure with joint nodes out of tubes, for the development of a titanium high performance bicycle. The hydroforming process has been applied for bulging of a tube in the superplastic condition before, and during the diffusion bonding process. In this experiment, a commercial Ti-3Al-2.5V tube was selected as raw material for the study. The forming experiment has been performed using a servo-hydraulic press with a capacity of 200 ton. Next, nitrogen gas was used to acquire necessary pressure for the bulging and bonding of the tubes to fabricate the joint nodes. The pertinent processing temperature was $870^{\circ}C$ for the superplastic hydroforming/diffusion bonding (SHF/DB) process, using the Ti-3Al-2.5V tube. The bonding quality and the progress of bulging and diffusion bonding have been observed by the investigation of the joining interfaces at the cross section of the joint structure. The control of the nitrogen pressure throughout the SHF/DB process, was an important factor to avoid any significant defects in the joint structure. The whole progress stage of the diffusion bonding could be observed at a joint interface. A core structure with 5 joint nodes to manufacture a titanium bicycle could be obtained in a SHF/DB process.
