Although the need of crop production has increased in Mongolia, crop cultivation is very limited because of the harsh climatic and topographic conditions. Crop lands are sparsely distributed with relatively small sizes and, therefore, it is difficult to survey the exact area of crop lands. The study aimed to find an easy and effective way of accurate classification to map crop lands in Mongolia using satellite images. To classify the crop lands over the study area in northern Mongolia, four classifications were carried out by using 1) Thematic Mapper (TM) image August 23, 2) TM image of July 6, 3) combined 12 bands of TM images of July and August, and 4) both TM images of July and August by layered classification. Wheat and potato are the major crop types and they show relatively high variation in crop conditions between July and August. On the other hands, other land cover types (forest, riparian vegetation, grassland, water and bare soil) do not show such difference between July and August. The results of four classifications clearly show that the use of multi-temporal images is essential to accurately classify the crop lands. The layered classification method, in which each class is separated by a subset of TM images, shows the highest classification accuracy (93.7%) of the crop lands. The classification accuracies are lower when we use only a single TM image of either July or August. Because of the different planting practice of potato and the growth condition of wheat, the spectral characteristics of potato and wheat cannot be fully separated from other cover types with TM image of either July or August. Further refinements on the spatial characteristics of existing crop lands may enhance the crop mapping method in Mongolia.
BACKGROUND: The reclaimed lands for agricultural use managed by the Korean government is consisted of 17,145 hectares of lands under construction and 13,384 hectares of completed lands. In order to utilize these reclaimed lands as competitive agricultural complexes, the government is preparing to develop comprehensive development plans for multiple purposes. For rational land-use planning and soil management, information of the soil chemical properties is necessary. METHODS AND RESULTS: From 2013 to 2016, soil samples were collected from 85 representative sampling sites of the reclaimed lands and analyzed for soil chemical properties including electric conductivity (EC), pH, soil organic matter (SOM), and nutrients. The annual mean soil EC ranged from 5.1 to 8.3 dS m-1 and have continued to decrease over the years (estimation equation with EC as dependent and year as independent variable was y =0.0736x2 - 1.4985x + 9.8305, R2 = 0.9753). The pH ranged from 7.3 to 7.6, which was higher than the optimum range (5.5~7.0) for agricultural soils. Soil organic matter (8 to 11 g kg-1) was lower level than the optimum range (20~30 kg-1). Available silicate (Av.SiO2) ranged from 169 to 229 mg kg-1, which was close to the minimum content (≥157 mg kg-1) for rice paddy field. Available phosphate (Av.P2O5) content (24~39 mg kg-1) was lower than the optimum range (80~120 mg kg-1) for rice paddy field. CONCLUSION: For efficient agricultural use of reclaimed lands under government management, our results suggest that the application of organic matter and supplying deficient nutrients as well as desalinization is required.
BACKGROUND: Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX), which are volatile aromatic hydrocarbons and main constituents of gasoline, are neuro-carcinogenic organic pollutants in soil and groundwater. Korea Ministry of Environment has established the maximum permissible level of BTEX in arable soil to 1, 20, 50 and 15 mg/kg, respectively. METHODS AND RESULTS: To understand an arable soil contamination by BTEX, we collected 92 samples from the arable lands around oil reservoir, and analyzed the BTEX residue using a GC-MS with head-space sampler. A linear correlation between BTEX concentration and peak areas was detected with coefficient correlations in the range of 0.9807-0.9995. The method LOQ of BTEX was 0.002, 0.014, 0.084, and 0.038 mg/kg, respectively. Recoveries of 0.5 mg/kg BTEX were found to be 73.7-96.9%. The precision was reliable since RSD percentage (0.7-7.5%) was below 30, which was the normal percent value. Also, BTEX in all samples were detected under the LOQ. CONCLUSION: These results showed that the investigated arable soils around airport and oil reservoir in Korea were not contaminated by oils.
Ulleungdo, a volcanic island, has different climate, soil, and topography characteristics from inland of the Korean Peninsula. Its agriculture also exhibits distinctive features. This study focused on floristic compositions and characteristics of crop lands in Ulleungdo. Flora surveys were conducted for 37 areas three times, one in May of 2016, one in July of 2020, and one in August of 2020. Results showed that vascular plants of crop lands in Ulleungdo included 186 taxa of 53 families, 132 genera, 160 species, 14 varieties, five subspecies, and five hybrids. Asteraceae had the most diverse species (33 taxa), followed by Poaceae (25 taxa), Fabaceae (12 taxa), Polygonaceae (11 taxa), and Liliaceae (nine taxa). The biological type of crop lands in Ulleungdo island was determined to be Th-R5-D4-e type. Rare plants were found for nine taxa: Athyrium acutipinnulum Kodama ex Nakai, Sedum takasimense Nakai, Rubus takesimensis Nakai, Dystaenia takesimana (Nakai) Kitag., Ligustrum foliosum Nakai, Aster pseudoglehni Y.Lim, Cirsium nipponicum (Maxim.) Makino, Lilium hansonii Leichtlin ex D.D.T.Moore, and Polygonatum robustum (Korsh.) Nakai. In addition, 45 taxa contained naturalized plants of 13 families, 33 genera, 44 species, and one variety. Urbanization and naturalization indices were 13.9%, and 24.2%, respectively.
To test whether the Grime's model on relationship between maximum standing crop plus litter (350~750g/$m^2$) and species density (10~30/0.25$m^2$) fit well or not, a total of 52 samples, with 4 replicate plots (0.5m$\times$0.5m each) per sample, was collected from various forests, grass lands and coastal salt marshes in midwestern part of central Korean peninsula from September to October in 1982. The result agrees well with the model for grass lands salt marshes, that is, shape of curve for the maximum standing crop (minus litter) against species density indicates normal distribution. The number of species was 11 for the grassland and 7 for the salt marshes within the range of 300g to 700g per square meter for the maximum standing crop. In forest stands, however, as the maximum standing crop of herbs increased the species density decreased. The Grime's model does not seem to fit with the resutls on forest stands of this study. It is examined further the relationships among the maximum standing crop, species density and eleven soil properties, and the possible cause of this discrepancy was disscused.
Background: The available information on terrestrial pest gastropods and their impact on the environment worldwide is scarce and outdated. The present study aimed to address this gap by conducting the first comprehensive survey of pest gastropods in the Nuwara Eliya District, an important vegetable growing area in the highlands of Sri Lanka. Eighty agricultural lands were surveyed over two years by establishing ten 1 m2 sampling plots per crop type in each agricultural land. Geo-coordinates, air temperature, elevation, relative humidity, daily rainfall, soil pH, species richness and abundance were recorded for rainy and non-rainy periods. The relationship between species composition and environmental variables was analyzed using multi-regression models and distribution maps. Results: Out of the 14 species recorded in agricultural lands, nine were identified as exotic pest species. Species abundance (t = 4.69, p < 0.05) and diversity was higher in the rainy period and the dominant species during this period were Bradybaena similaris (t = 2.69, p < 0.05) and Deroceras reticulatum (t = 2. 46, p < 0.05). Eggs and estivating adults were found in soil and under decaying organic matter during the non-rainy period. The exotic species showed broader preferences for the measured environmental factors and showed a wider range in distribution compared to the native species. Variation in pest gastropod composition was significantly accounted for by elevation, relative humidity, soil pH and daily rainfall. Additionally, the species richness and abundance varied across locations due to the combined effects of elevation, crop type and stage, and field type. Conclusions: The study emphasizes the importance of understanding the biology and ecology of gastropod pests to develop effective management strategies. By considering the influence of environmental factors and implementing appropriate soil management techniques, such as targeting specific habitats and crop stages, it is possible to mitigate pest populations and minimize their impact on agricultural lands. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights into the dynamics and interactions of terrestrial gastropods in agricultural ecosystems, supporting sustainable pest management practices.
This experiment was conducted to select optimum minor cereal crop and variety for the marginal agricultural lands so that they would be used to increase the agricultural land use rate in mountainous areas. This experiment used three different marginal agricultural lands, that is, slope land, barren land and gravelly land. Soil pH of control field was 7.85, slightly alkali, whereas gravelly land showed strong acid(pH 5.1). EC of marginal agricultural lands was generally lower compared to the control, especially barren land showed 0.05dS $m^{-1}$ which was the lowest among marginal agricultural lands. Foxtail millet showed no significant difference of heading and ripening date among marginal agricultural lands. Foxtail millet of slope land showed the highest culm length(169.5 cm) and grains per ear(4913.9 grains) among marginal agricultural lands except control field. Growth duration of three varieties was varied from 112 to 113days, which was not different statistically. In grains per ear of common millet, slope land showed 787.1 grains which was the highest among marginal agricultural lands except control field. Among varieties, Byorukgijang showed the highest grains per ear(827.2 g/ear), whereas 1000 grain weight was 5.5 g which was lower compared to that of Hwanggijang(6.2 g). In sorghum, slope land showed the highest grains(2563.8 grains) per ear and ears per 3.3 $m^2$(26.0 ears) except control field. Growth duration of three sorghum varieties almost the same from 122 to 123 days, whereas the highest grains per ear was obtained from Moktaksusu(2357.6 grains). Jangmoksusu showed the highest 1000 grain weight(23.8 g) among three sorghum varieties. In yield of three foxtail millets, the highest yield was obtained from slope land(282.0 kg/10a) among marginal agricultural lands and Mongdangjo showed the highest yield(252.3 kg/10a) among three varieties. In yield of three common millets, the highest yield was obtained from slope land(196.0 kg/10a) among marginal agricultural lands and Byorukgijang showed the highest yield(173.8 kg/10a) in three varieties. In three sorghum varieties, the highest yield was obtained from slope land(301.7 kg/10a) among marginal agricultural lands and Moktaksusu showed the highest yield(236.5 kg/10a) among three varieties.
Relation between soil salinity and forage yield of five upland crops such as sudan grass, sesbania, barnyard grass, corn and soybean was studied in the three reclaimed lands of Korea during two years from 2007 to 2008. Although plant number emerged was obtained satisfactory by desalting treatment, further growth of crops was sharply affected by re-salting process according to soil drying. Soil salinity varied place by place and changed constantly, crop growth was differently responded to soil salinity according to the specific conditions of the reclaimed lands. In the Iweon reclaimed land with higher soil water conductivity and sandy soil texture, crop growth and yield sharply decrease with increase of soil salinity. Relation between soil salinity and crop growth and yield was well expressed as logarithmic function. Surface soil EC to reach at 50% of growth reduction to the tallest height of crops was $5dS\;m^{-1}$ for soybean, $6dS\;m^{-1}$ for corn and $7dS\;m^{-1}$ for sudan grass, sesbania, and barnyard grass by logarithmic function. In the Hwaong and Yeongsangang reclaimed lands with low soil conductivity and finer soil texture, plant growth response to salt stress was statistically vague by mixing of harmful influence from flooding and wet injury. However, it is observed that crop growth and yield on the place of lower salinity was better than crop growth on the place of higher salinity. It is accordingly concluded that flooding control during summer rainy season is vary important as well as desalting process for good growth of soiling and forage crops in the newly reclaimed land from tidal flat.
Relationships between saturated conductivity (Ks) and separate contents were evaluated from 44 soil series of arable lands: 18 for paddy fields and 26 for upland crop fields. Saturated hydraulic conductivities of A, B, and C horizons were determined with tension infiltrometer and Guelph permeameter in situ. Sand, silt, clay, and organic matter content of each horizon were analyzed. Based on correlation analysis, sand separate had a positive relationship with Ks for both paddy (r=0.27, p=0.017) and upland fields (r=0.24. p=0.030). Clay content had a negative relationship with Ks for paddy soils (r=-0.32, p=0.005) while significant correlation between them was not found for upland crop fields (r=-0.20, p=0.07). Organic matter content showed a positive relationship with Ks only for upland crop fields (r=0.33, p=0.002). Due to low correlation coefficients between separate contents and Ks, performance of pedotransfer functions was not enough to estimate Ks. It implies that hydraulic properties of arable lands were affected by other factors rather than particle characteristics. Platy structure and plow pan were suggested to limit Ks of paddy fields. Soil compaction and diversity of parent materials were proposed to influence Ks of upland crop fields. It suggests that genetic processes and artificial managements should be included in pedotransfer functions to estimate hydraulic properties appropriately.

A two year's field experiment was conducted on newly reclaimed saline tidal lands to measure the effects of sand mulching on salinity of the soils and their relationship to crop performance. Hybrid sorghum cv. Pioneer 931 was grown under different mulching treatments using of medium sand and red earth (Fine loamy, Typic Hapludults). Salinity in the root zone was decreased markedly under soil mulching using of medium sand, especially during the dry season, and it caused a great increase in the root growth and R/T ratio. Seasonal values of electrical conductivity at sand mulching were 6.6 in April and 1.6 mmhos in August, but it was still high with a concentration of 12.7 (April) and 3.8 mmhos (August) in untreated check plot. Sand mulching increased plant growth and the rate of dry matter accumulation. However, treatment of red earth additionally over sand mulching produced lower dry matter yield than those of soil mulching using of medium sand only. Under salt stress sorghum plant showed a decrease in the leaf weight ratio (LWR) and it resulted in a low concentration of crude protein of the plant. Sand mulching enhanced leaf weight ratio and rate of protein synthesis.
