  • One of the methods to solve the problems of over-produced livestock manure, which are produced 34 million tons or more every year in Korea, is the using of these organic resources in rice cultivation. Experiments were carried out to find our the marginal application rime of pig manure without the injury for rice cultivation, dry and compost pig manure were incorporated separately in paddy field on several different time before rice transplanting. lt could be concluded that not only both manures were able to incorporate anytime before transplanting without the injury to rice growth, but also application of CPM and DPM to the rice paddy soil can be possible. However, 50% of the recommended application of chemical fertilizer was possible when the pig manure was incorporated in the paddy field for rice production.

  • Good quality seedlings produced in the seedbed of Yangjik, traditional seedling cultivation, is one of the most important factors in determining the yield and quality of $4{\sim}6-year-old$ ginseng. This study was carried out to substitute Yacto, traditional organic fertilizer, for economical compost in the cultivation of seedling by fertilizing relatively little amount of compost into seedbed soil. Bulk density and solid phase were decreased in physical properties of seedbed soil, while air phase and porosity were increased by more addition of compost. When the amount of applied compost in seedbed soil was above $8{\ell}$ per Kan, the contents of nutrient were exceeded the range of optimal standard for ginseng cultivation. Chlorophyll content and stem length were increased by more addition of compost, while the length and the width of leaves showed the highest value at the application level of $8{\ell}$ per Kan. Heat injury was also increased distinctly above the application level of $8{\ell}$ per Kan. The number of first grade seedlings and usable seedlings, and fresh root weight per plant showed the peak at application level of $8{\ell}$ per Kan, respectively. Fertilizing the compost of $8{\ell}$ per Kan into seedbed soil was the optimal amount for producing the good quality seedlings.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of induced wet-injury conditions on barley seedling growth. Barley seedlings at the three leaf stage were grown in culture solutions with various combinations of dissolved oxygen (DO), nutrients and citric acid (CA) concentrations. Seedling growth was reduced by hypoxia. Root length and root fresh weight were most severely reduced under 1 ppm DO. Shoot growth was slightly reduced but not root growth under low nutrient condition. Seedling growth was reduced by CA in a concentration-dependant manner, Response of seedling growth was efficiently differentiated in a solution containing 1 ppm DO, one tenth of the normal P, K and Mg concentration and 3 mM CA. Under this induced wet-injury condition, overall seedling growth of 6 cultivars was reduced by 11 to 19% compared to the control condition. The results suggest that the induced wet-injury condition can be used for the screening of resistant genotypes at the seedling stage.

  • Salt injury in rice is caused mainly by the salinity in soil and in the irrigated water, and occasionaly by salinity delivered through typhoon from the sea. The salt concentration of rice plants increased with higher salinity in the soil of the rice growing. The climatic conditions, high temperature and solar radiation and dry conditions promote the salt absorption of rice plant in saline soil. The higher salt accumulation in the rice plant generally reduces the root activity and inhibits the absorption of minerals of rice plant, resulting the reduction of photosynthesis. The salt damages of rice plant, however, are different from different growth stage of rice plants as follows: 1. Germination of rice seed was slightly delayed up to 1.0% of salt concentration and remarkably at 1. 5%, but none of rice seeds were germinated at 2.5%. This may be due to the delayed water uptake of rice seeds and the inhibition of enzyme activity, 2. It was enable to establish rice seedlings at seed bed by 0.2% of salt concentration with some reduction of leaf elongation. The increasing of 0.3% salt concentration caused to the seedling death with varietal differences, but most of seedlings were death at 0.4% with no varietal differences. 3. Seedlings grown at the nursery over 0.1% salt, gradually reduced in rooting activity after transplanting according to increasing the salt concentration from 0.1% up to 0.3% of paddy field. However, the seedlings grown in normal seed bed showed no difference in rooting between varieties up to 0.1% but significantly different at 0.3% between varieties, but greatly reduced at 0.5% and died at last in paddy after transplanting. 4. At panicle initiation stage, rice plant delayed in heading by salt damage, at meiotic stage reduced in grains and its filling rate due to inhibition of glume and pollen developing, and salt damage at heading stage and till 3 weeks after heading caused to reduction of fertilization and ripening rate. In viewpoint of agricultural policy the overcoming strategy for salt injury is to secure sufficient water source. Irrigation and drainage systems as well as underground drainage is necessary to desalinize more effectively. This must be the most effective and positive way except cost. By cultural practice, growing the salt tolerant variety with high population could increase yield. The intermittent irrigation and fresh water flooding especially at transplanting and from panicle initiation to heading stage, the most sensitive to salt injury, is important to reduce the salt content in saline soil. During the off-cropping season, plough and rotavation with flooding followed by drainage, or submersion and drainage with groove could improve the desalinization. Increase of nitrogen fertilizer with more split application, and soil improvement by lime, organic matter and forign soil addition, could increase the rice yield. Shift of trans-planting is one of the way to escape from the salt injury.

  • Pyrausta panopealis is the major pest in green perilla. The larva weaves a web on the shoot of green perilla and damages. In case of extreme, The larva cuts the main branch of green perilla and the leaf of green perilla isn't harvested anymore. A field study was conducted to estimate economic injury levels (EILs) and control thresholds (CTs) for P. panopealis injuring green perilla in green-houses. Different densities of P. panopealis ranged from 1 to 20 crops (2 units per crop) per 100 crops on 13. June, early inoculation. The number of injured leaf and the rate of injured crop were increased by 23. June, on the other hand were decreased after that day. Also, the amount of yield sow the same result above. The economic loss time calculated by the ratio of cost managing this moth to market price (C/V) (C: cost managing a moth, V: Market price) was 4.0%. The economic injury level was 5.1 larval per 100 crops. The control thresholds calculated by 80% level of economic injury level was 4.1 larval per 100 crops.

  • The bird repellent, methiocarb 50% WP, has been used to reduce the bird damage in the crop field in the European countries. The bird damage occaisonally would occur in the wet direct seeded rice and in soybean field, and resulted in decreasing the crop productivity by the reduction of seedling emergence rate. In this experiment, rice seeds, Hwasungbyeo(Oryza sativa), were coated with the different application rate of methiocarb, 5, 10 and 15 per kg seed, and soybean, Taegwangkong(Glycine max), 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5g. In rice, the seeds coated with 10 and 15g of methiocarb were not lost by bird, while those with 5g and control were lost to 37 and 50% of total seeds, respectively. No damage by birds was observed in rice seedling when the coleoptile and radicle of rice were emerged at 7 days after the water seeding. The crop injury of methiocarb reducing the emergence rate of seedlings, shortening the shoot length, and decreasing the leaf number was occurred at the treated of methiocarb 15g per kg seed. In soybean, the loss of the sprouting by birds was lower in the treatment of methiocarb 7.5g per kg seed than that in both the control and the treatments of methiocarb, 2.5 and 5.0g per kg seed. No crop injury by the treatment of methiocarb was observed in all application rate.

  • Several parts of Lythrum salicaria were used for this study. Scavenging activities on radicals, inhibitory activity on linoleic acid peroxidation and total phenol contents of extracts from root, flower, and aerial part were evaluated. Flower and root selected from in vitro assay were subjected to in vivo assay on $CCL_4$-induced liver injury rat model for two weeks. Carbon tetrachloride intoxication on rats produced large amounts of hepatic lipid peroxidation product, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) compared with normal rats. Treatment with root extract of L. salicaria (LSR) showed effective inhibitory activity on lipid peroxidation product. Administration with LSR extract significantly alleviated $CCL_4$-induced increase in GPT activity which were more effective than silymarin. The results of this study suggest that root and flower of L. salicaria have antioxidant and liver protecting activities, and root part is the most effective candidate to develop a new functional material.

  • Root yield and quality of ginseng cultured in paddy soil was low relatively compared with that of upland soil because of moisture injury in root during rainy season. Drainage class in soils generally divided into 6 classes, and it is possible to cultivate ginseng practically in imperfectly drainage class (IDC). This study carried out to select the varieties that is suitable for paddy soil, which is easy to be generated rusty-colored root and physiological-discolored leaf. Experiment plot arranged with the condition of soil humidity contents such as poorly drainage class (PDC) and imperfectly drainage class (IDC), and upland soil. Growth characteristics and root yield were investigated in four-year-old ginseng of varieties, Cheonpoong (CP), Yeonpoong (YP), Hwangsookjong (HS), and Jakyeongjong (JK). CP among four varieties showed the highest yield in IDC and CP was the lowest ratio in leaf discoloration and rusty-colored root. HS was followed by CP in the order of root yield, but it had the weakness that the ratio of rusty-colored root was high respectively.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the control effect of fungicides of sclerotinia rot control, growth characteristics, and seed yield in the cultivation of rapeseed. All fungicides treated had no effect on the growth of rapeseed. The major fungicides were mancozeb 75% WP, chlorothalonil 75% WP, dithianon 43% WP. difenoconazole 10% WP, benomyl 50% WP, and propineb 70% WP. Dry seed yield and control were increased largely with chlorothalonil 75% WP ($33g/12{\ell}$), fungicide than the other fungicides Sclerotinia rot. All fungicides had no injury with standard dosage. On the other hand all fungicides had slight injury in the double dosage level for the rapeseed.
