  • As a circular cylinder has a comparatively simple shape and becomes a basic problem for flows around other various shapes of bodies, the problem of two-dimensional viscous flow around the circular cylinder has been investigated, both theoretically and experimentally. But not a few problems are left unsolved. It is well known that the calculations are successfully made with the approximations of Stokes or Oseen for very low Reynolds numbers, but as Reynolds number is increased, Oseen's approximations as well as Stokes's ones become more and more remote from the exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. Therefore, in this paper, the authors transform the Navier-Stokes equations into the finite difference equations in the steady two-dimensional viscous flow at Reynolds number up to 45, and then solve the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations numerically. Also, the authors examine the accuracy of the solution by means of flow visualization with aluminum powder. The main results are as follows; (1) The critical Reynolds number at which twin vortices begin to form in the rear of the circular cylinder is found to be 6 in the experiment and 4 in the numerical solution. (2) As Reynolds number is increased, it is proved that the ratio of the length of the twin vortices to the diameter is grown almost linearly, both experimentally and numerically. (3) Separation angle is also increased according to reynolds number. But it is found that it would converge into 101.3 degrees, both experimentally and numerically.

  • A two-dimensional laminar flow through a channel with a pair of symmetric vertical fins is investigated. At far up- and down-stream from the fins, the plane Poiseuille flow exists in the channel. The Stokes flow for this channel is first investigated analytically and then the other laminar flows by numerical method. For analytic method, the method of eigen function expansion and collocation method are employed. In numerical solution for laminar flows, finite difference method(FDM) is used to obtain vorticity and stream function. From the results, the streamline patterns are shown and the additional pressure drop due to the attached fins and the force exerted on the fin are calculated. It is clear that the force depends on the length of fins and Reynolds number. When the Reynolds number exceeds a critical value, the flow becomes asymmetric. This critical Reynolds number Re/sub c/ depends on the length of the fins.

  • A sonic nozzle is used as a reference flow meter in the area of gas flow rate measurement. The critical pressure ratio of sonic nozzle is an important factor in maintaining its operating condition. ISO9300 suggested the critical pressure ratio of sonic nozzle as a function of area ratio. In this study, 13 sonic nozzles were made by the design of ISC9300 with different half diffuser angles of 2。 to 8。 and throat diameters of 0.28 to 4.48 mm. The test results of half diffuser angles below 8。 ar quite similar to those of ISO9300. On the other hand, the critical pressure ratio for the nozzle of 8。 decreases by 5.5% in comparison with ISO9300. However, ISO9300 does not predict the critical pressure ratio at lower Reynolds numbers than 10(sup)5. Therefore, it is found that it is a better way for the flow of low Reynolds number to express the critical pressure ratio of sonic nozzle as a function of Reynolds number than area ratios. A correlation equation of critical pressure is introduced with uncertainty $\pm$3.2 % at 95% confidence level.

  • In this study a phase diagram has been used to investigate the unsteadiness of two-dimensional lid-driven closed flows within a square cavity for twelve Reynolds numbers; $7.5{\times}10^3,\; 8{\times}10^3,\; 8.5{\times}10^3,\; 9{\times}10^3,\; 9.5{\times}10^3,\; 10^4,\;1.5{\times}10^4,\;2{\times}10^4,\; 3{\times}10^4,\; 7.5{\times}10^4$ and $10^5$. The results indicate that the first critical Reynolds number at which the flow unsteadiness of sinusoidal fluctuation appears from the temporal variation of total kinetic energy curves is assumed of sinusoidal fluctuation appears form the temporal variation of total kinetic energy curves is assumed to be in the neigh-bourhood of $Re=8.5{\times}10^3$ The second critical Reynolds number where the periodic amplitude and frequency collapse to random disturbance being existed around $Re=1.5{\times}10^4$ The exponentially decreasing vortices formed at the lower two corners are found commonly at the time-mean flow pattern of $Re=3{\times}10^4$.

  • The objective of this paper is to present the performance comparison of the impulse turbines for different diameters. In the study, the investigation has been performed experimentally by model testing for some diameters, especially 0.3 m and 0.6 m. The experiment was performed for Reynolds number range of 0.17 ${\times}$ 10$\^$5/ -1.09 ${\times}$ 10$\^$5/ and for different values of hub-to-tip ratio ν ranging from 0.6 to 0.85. As a result, it was found that the critical Reynolds number is to be around 0.5 ${\times}$ 10$\^$5/ for ν=0.6 and 0.4 ${\times}$ 10$\^$5/ for ν=0.7. For the hub-to-tip ratio, the optimum value is 0.7 when the turbine is operated at lower Reynolds number. However, its value seems to be 0.6 at higher Reynolds number in the tested range.

  • The present study addresses a computational result of unsteady gas flow through a critical nozzle. The axisymmetric, unsteady, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations are solved using a finite volume method that makes use of the second order upwind scheme for spatial derivatives and the multi-stage Runge-Kutta integral scheme for time derivatives. The steady solutions of the governing equation system are validated with the previous experimental data to ensure that the present computational method is valid to predict the critical nozzle flows. In order to simulate the effects of back pressure fluctuations on the critical nozzle flows, an excited pressure oscillation with an amplitude and frequency is assumed downstream of the exit of the critical nozzle. The results obtained show that for low Reynolds numbers, the unsteady effects of the pressure fluctuations can propagate upstream of the throat of critical nozzle, and thus giving rise to the applicable fluctuations in mass flow rate through the critical nozzle, while for high Reynolds numbers, the pressure signals occurring at the exit of the critical nozzle do not propagate upstream beyond the nozzle throat. For very low Reynolds number, it is found that the sonic line near the throat of the critical nozzle remarkably fluctuateswith time, providing an important mechanism for pressure signals to propagate upstream of the nozzle throat, even in choked flow conditions. The present study is the first investigation to clarify the unsteady effects on the critical nozzle flows.

  • When first commissioned, the 1.6 km span 275kV Severn Crossing Conductor experienced large amplitude vibrations in certain wind conditions, but without ice or rain, leading to flashover between the conductor phases. Wind tunnel tests undertaken at the time identified a major factor was the lift generated in the critical Reynolds number range in skew winds. Despite this insight, and although a practical solution was found by wrapping the cable to change the aerodynamic profile, there remained some uncertainty as to the detailed excitation mechanism. Recent work to address the problem of dry inclined cable galloping on cable-stayed bridges has led to a generalised quasi-steady galloping formulation, including effects of the 3D geometry and changes in the static force coefficients in the critical Reynolds number range. This generalised formulation has been applied to the case of the Severn Crossing Conductor, using data of the static drag and lift coefficients on a section of the stranded cable, from the original wind tunnel tests. Time history analysis has then been used to calculate the amplitudes of steady state vibrations for comparison with the full scale observations. Good agreement has been obtained between the analysis and the site observations, giving increased confidence in the applicability of the generalised galloping formulation and providing insight into the mechanism of galloping of yawed and stranded cables. Application to other cable geometries is also discussed.

  • A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. Three different distributions of mass-flow rate at 5 jet exits were assumed to see their effects upon the flow characteristics, especially in the jet-flow region. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Results show that a fully developed laminar flow exists above a certain Reynolds number whose exact value depends upon the mass flow rate distribution. AS the Reynolds number increases, the flow becomes transitional from downstream and finally a fully developed turbulent flow forms in the jet-flow region. The critical Reynolds number where the fully developed turbulent flow forms is quite dependent upon the distribution of mass-flow rate. One interesting result is that the distribution of the skin friction coefficient along the inpingement plate in the jet-flow region shows a consistent dependency on the Reynolds number, i.e. inversely proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number, regardless of flow regime.

  • This experimental study concerns the characteristics of a transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure drops and skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of water and that of glycerine-water solution (44%) at a inner cylinder rotational speed of $0{\sim}600$ rpm, respectively. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure drops and the visualization of flow field, to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients and to understand the flow instability mechanism. The present results show that the skin-friction coefficients have the significant relation with the Rossby numbers, only for laminar regime. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure drops and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficient due to the rotation is uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, it is gradually declined for turbulent flow regime. Consequently, the critical (axial-flow) Reynolds number decreases as the rotational speed increases. Thus, the rotation of inner cylinder promotes the early occurrence of transition due to the excitation of taylor vortices.

  • Flow visualization experiments were conducted for two louver arrays having large louver pitch ratio ($L_p/F_p=1.0$ and 1.4). Flow efficiencies and critical Reynolds numbers were obtained from the data, and were compared with existing correlations. The correlations failed to predict the present flow efficiency data adequately; some correlation overpredicted the data, while others underpredicted the data. Large louver pitch ratio of the present model, which is outside of the applicable range of the correlations may partly be responsible. The critical Reynolds numbers obtained from the present flow visualization data were in close agreement with those obtained from the heat transfer tests on actual flat tube heat exchangers. Existing correlations on the critical Reynolds number generally overpredicted the present data.
