  • In this work, nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of pure water are measured on horizontal 26 fpi low fin, Turbo-B and Thermoexcel-E square surfaces of 9.53 mm length. HTCs are taken from 10 $kW/m^2$ to critical heat flux for all surfaces. Test results show that critical heat fluxes(CHFs) of all enhanced surfaces are greatly improved as compared to that of a plain surface. CHFs of water on the 26 fpi low fin surface, Thermoexcel-E surface, and Turbo-B are increased up to 320%, 275%, and 150% as compared to that of the plain surface, respectively. CHF of the Turbo-B enhanced surface is lower than that of the 26 fpi low fin surface due to the surface geometry. The heat transfer enhancement ratios of the Thermoexcel-E surface, low fin surface and Turbo-B enhanced surface are 1.6~2.9, 1.6~2.1, 1.4~1.7 respectively in the range of heat fluxes tested. Judging from these results, it can be said that these types of enhanced surfaces can be used in heat transfer applications at high heat fluxes.

  • In nucleate boiling, bubbles are created by the expansion of entrapped gas or vapor at small cavities in the surface of heat transfer. Namely, surface roughness is the important factor of heat transfer. This paper deals with the characteristics of boiling curve according to surface roughness. Freon-113 is used as the experimental fluid. The results are as follows; 1. In the case of the same as "q=C$\Delta$T$^{n}$ ", the lower numberical index "n", the larger heat transfer coefficient and the lower wall superheat "$\Delta$T" is obtained for the rougher surface. 2. In the working of every kind of heat transfer sruface with boiling, improvement of capabilities of heat transfer can be devised by adding suitable roughness on the heat transfer surface. 3. When the metal nets of moderate mesh number are established, the capabilities of heat transfer can be improved in evaporation of liquid in vessels. But in the case that the sucession of bubbles in checked by using the nets which are too tight, the generation of bubbles union decreases critical heat flux. decreases critical heat flux.

  • Pool boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux (CHF) of water-based nanofluids with alumina and titania nanoparticles of 0.01% by volume were investigated on a disk heater at saturated and atmospheric conditions. The experimental results showed that the boiling in nanofluids caused the considerable increase in CHF on the flat surface heater. It was revealed by visualization of the heater surface subsequent to the boiling experiments that a major amount of nanoparticles deposited on the surface during the boiling process. Pool boiling of pure water on the surface modified by such nanoparticle deposition resulted in the same CHF increases as what boiling nanofluids, thus suggesting the CHF enhancement in nanofluids was an effect of the surface modification through the nanoparticle deposition during nanofluid boiling. Possible reasons for CHF enhancement in pool boiling of nanofluids are discussed with surface property changes caused by the nanoparticle deposition.

  • In this paper, experiments investigating the high-temperature region heat transfer coefficients for the spray cooling of hot flat plates were performed by down spray water using flat spray nozzles. The heat transfer surface is made of copper and is 100mm in length and 40mm in width and 15mm in thickness. The experimental condition of spray are as follows: temperatures of the water droplets are T=20~$80^{\circ}C$ and droplets volume fluxes are D=0.001565~0.010438$m^3/m^2s$. Next, correlating equations for the heat transfer characteristics of spray cooling in the high temperature region are developed from the effects of droplets volume flux and the surface temperature of heat transfer plate.

  • Numerical analysis has been carried out to investigate laminar convective heat transfer at zero gravity in a tube for supercritical water near the thermodynamic critical point. Fluid flow and heat transfer are strongly coupled due to large variation of thermodynamic and transport properties such as density, specific heat, viscosity, and thermal conductivity near the critical point. Heat transfer characteristics in the developing region of the tube show transition behavior between liquid-like and gas-like phases with a peak in heat transfer coefficient distribution near the pseudo critical point. The peak of the heat transfer coefficient depends on pressure and wall heat flux rather than inlet temperature and Reynolds number. Results of the modeling provide convective heat transfer characteristics including velocity vectors, temperature, and the properties as well as the heat transfer coefficient. The effect of proximity on the critical point is considered and a heat transfer correlation is suggested for the peak of Nusselt number in the tube.

  • Accurate ocean surface fluxes with high resolution are critical for understanding a mechanism of global climate. However, it is difficult to derive those fluxes by using ocean observation data because the number of ocean observation data is extremely small and the distribution is inhomogeneous. On the other hand. satellite data are characterized by the high density, the high resolution and the homogeneity. Therefore, it can be considered that we obtain accurate ocean surface by using satellite data. Recently we constructed ocean surface data sets mainly using satellite data. The data set is named by Japanese Ocean Flux data sets with Use of Remote sensing Observations (J-OFURO). Here, we introduce J-OFURO. The data set includes shortwave radiation, longwave radiation, latent heat flux, sensible heat flux, and momentum flux etc. Moreover, sea surface dynamic topography data are included in the data set. Radiation data sets covers western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean because we use a Japanese geostationally satellite (GMS) to estimate radiation fluxes. On the other hand, turbulent heat fluxes are globally estimated. The constructed data sets are used and shows the effectiveness for many scientific studies.

  • A developing post-dryout region is characterized by significant heat transfer enhancements compared with the fully developed post-dryout region. The heat transfer enhancements are mainly due to upstream disturbance and entrained droplets in the region immediately downstream of the critical heat flux location. In this paper, an improved heat transfer correlation is developed for the developing post-dryout regions in vertical tubes over a wide range of flow conditions. The correlation represents a correction factor for the fully developed film-boiling look-up table to be applied to the developing post-dryout region. The new correlation significantly improves the heat transfer prediction in the developing post-dryout regions and provides very good agreement with the experimental data.

  • In this study, R-123 flow boiling experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of nanoparticle deposition on heater surfaces on flow critical heat flux (CHF) and boiling heat transfer. It is known that CHF enhancement by nanoparticles results from porous structures that are very similar to layers of Chalk River unidentified deposit formed on nuclear fuel rod surfaces during the reactor operation period. Although previous studies have investigated the surface effects through surface modifications, most studies are limited to pool boiling conditions, and therefore, the effects of porous surfaces on flow boiling heat transfer are still unclear. In addition, there have been only few reports on suppression of wetting for decoupled approaches of reasoning. In this study, bare and $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticle-coated surfaces were prepared for the study experiments. The CHF of each surface was measured with different mass fluxes of $1,600kg/m^2s$, $1,800kg/m^2s$, $2,100kg/m^2s$, $2,400kg/m^2s$, and $2,600kg/m^2s$. The nanoparticle-coated tube showed CHF enhancement up to 17% at a mass flux of $2,400kg/m^2s$ compared with the bare tube. The factors for CHF enhancement are related to the enhanced rewetting process derived from capillary action through porous structures built-up by nanoparticles while suppressing relative wettability effects between two sample surfaces as a highly wettable R-123 refrigerant was used as a working fluid.

  • The critical heat flux (CHF) on a heat transfer surface with nanostructures is known to be significantly better than that on flat surfaces. Several physical mechanisms have been proposed to explain this phenomenon. However, almost all studies conducted so far have been qualitative, and a generalized theory has not yet been established. In this study, we developed a quantitative mechanism for CHF enhancement on a surface with nanostructures, based on vapor recoil and surface adhesion forces. We focused on the increase in the length of the triple contact line owing to the formation of nanostructures and the adhesion force between them and the liquid.

  • This paper reviews cooling aspects of the diverter system in Tokamak fusion devices with primary emphasis on the critical heat flux (CHF) issues for oater-cooled designs. General characteristics of four (4) coolant options for diverter cooling gases, oater, liquid metal, and organic liquid - are discussed first, focusing on the comparison of advantages and disadvantages of those options. Then results of recent studies on the high-heat-flux CHF of water at subcooled high-velocity conditions are reviewed to provide a general idea on the feasibility of the water-cooled diverter concept for future Tokamak fusion reactors. Water is assessed to be the most viable and practical coolant option for diverters of future experimental Tokamaks.
