The fracture behavior of glass/epoxy plain woven composite plates containing circular holes is experimentally investigated to examine the effects of hole size and specimen width on notched tensile strength. It is shown in this paper that the characteristic length according to the point stress criterion depends on the hole size and specimen width. For predicting the notched tensile strength, a modified failure criterion is developed. An excellent agreement is found between the experimental results and the analytical prediction of modified failure criterion. The notched strength and the characteristic length have an increase and decrease relations. When the unstable fracture occured, the critical crack length equivalent for the damage zone size at the edge of hole is about twice the characteristic length. The critical energy release rate G$_{c}$ is independent of hole size(0.03 .leq. 2R/W .leq. 0.5) under the same specimen width. However G$_{c}$ increases with an increase in specimen width which can be explained by stress relaxation due to the notch insensitivity.ity.

Unidirectional commingled-yarn-based carbon fiber(CF)/polyamide(PA) 6 composite was fabricated under molding pressures of 0.4, 0.6 and 1.0 MPa to study its flexural deformation and fracture behavior. Fiber/matrix interfacial bonding area became larger with an increase of molding pressure from 0.4 to 0.6 MPa. For molding pressures .geq. 0.6 MPa, good flexural performance of similar magnitudes was attained. For the fracture test, four kinds of notch direction were adopted : edgewise notches parallel (L) and transverse (T) to the major direction of fiber bundles, and flatwise notches parallel(ZL) and perpendicular(ZT) to this direction. Nominal bend strength for L and ZL specimens exhibited high sensitivity to notching. ZL specimens revealed the lowest values of the critical stress intensity factor $K_c$ which was slightly superior to those of unfilled PA6 matrix. Enlargement of the compression area for T specimens was analyzed by means of the rigidity reduction resulting from the fracture occurrence.
Alumina/silver nanocomposites were fabricated using a soaking method through a sol-gel route to construct an intra-type nanostructure. The pulse electric-current sintering (PECS) technique was used to sinter the nanocomposites. Several specimens were annealed after sintering. The microstructure, mechanical properties, critical frontal process zone (FPZ) size, and thermo-mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were estimated. The relative densities of the specimens sintered at 1350 and $1450^{\circ}C$ were 95% and 99%, respectively. The maximum value of the three-point bending strength was found to be 780 MPa for the $2{\times}2{\times}10 mm$ specimen sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$. The fracture toughness of the specimen sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$ was measured to be $3.60 MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ using the single-edge V-notched beam (SEVNB) technique. The fracture mode of the nanocomposites was transgranular, in contrast to the intergranular mode of monolithic alumina. The fracture morphology suggested that dislocations were generated around the silver nanoparticles dispersed within the alumina matrix. The specimens sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$ were annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ for 5 min, following which the maximum fracture strength became 810 MPa and the fracture toughness improved to $4.21 MPam^{1/2}$. The critical FPZ size was the largest for the specimen annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ for 5 min. Thermal conductivity of the alumina/silver nanocomposites sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$ was 38 W/mK at room temperature, which was higher than the value obtained with the law of mixture.
The objective of this study is to propose the FE model for mechanical clinched joint using cohesive zone model to analyze its failure behavior under impact loading. Cohesive zone model (CZM) is two-parameter failure criteria approach, which could describe the failure behavior of joint using critical stress and fracture toughness. In this study, the relationship between failure behavior of mechanical clinched joint and fracture parameters is investigated by FE analysis with CZM. Using this relationship, the critical stress and fracture toughness for tensile and shear mode are determined by H-type tensile test and lap shear test, which were made of 5052 aluminum alloy. The fracture parameters were applied to the tophat impact test to evaluate the crashworthiness. Compared penetration depth and energy absorption at the point where 50% of total displacement in result of FE analysis and experiment test for impact test, those has shown similar crashworthiness.

In this studies, curing behavior and mechanical properties of tetrafunctional epoxy resin (4EP)/ fluorine-containing epoxy resin (FEP) blend systems was investigated with 4, 4'-diaminodiphenol methane (DDM) as a curing agent. The cure activation energies $(E_a)$) were studied by Flynn-Wall-Ozawa's equation with dynamic DSC method. For the fracture toughness of the casting specimens, the critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) and the specific fracture energy ($G_{IC}$) were determined by fracture toughness test.

This study aims to examine an effect of stacking sequence and curvature on the penetration characteristic of a composite laminated shell. For the purpose, we manufactured specimens with different stacking sequences and curvatures, and conducted a penetration test using an air-gun. To examine an influence according to stacking sequence, as flat plate and curvature specimen had more plies, their critical penetration energy was higher, Critical penetration energies of specimen A and C with less interfaces somewhat higher than those of B and D with more interfaces. The reason that with less interfaces, critical penetration energy was higher is pre-impact bending stiffness of composite laminated shell with less interfaces was lower than that of laminated shell with more interfaces, but bending stiffness after impact was higher. And it is because interface, the weakest part of the composite laminated shell, was influenced by transverse impact. As curvature increases, critical penetration energy increases linearly. It is because as curvature increases, resistance to in-plane deformation as well as bending deformation increases, which need higher critical penetration energy. Patterns of cracks caused by penetration of composite laminated shells include interlaminar crack, intralaminar crack, and laminar fracture. A 0$^{\circ}$ply laminar had a matrix crack, a 90$^{\circ}$ply laminar had intralaminar crack and laminar fracture, and interface between 0$^{\circ}$and 90$^{\circ}$laminar had a interlaminar crack. We examined crack length and delamination area through a penetration test. For the specimen A and C with 2 interface, the longest circumferential direction crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the first interface from the impact point. For the specimen B and D with 4 interface, the longest crack length and largest delamination area were observed on the third interface from the impact point.
The notched Charpy impact test is one of the most prevalent techniques used to characterize the effect of high impulse loads on polymeric materials. In this study, a method of analysis in nylon plastic materials is suggested to evaluate the critical strain energy release rate for variation of notch angles from the Charpy impact energy measurement. Instrumented Charpy impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture parameters in addition to total fracture properties and maximum critical load. The dynamic stress intensity factor of nylon plastic material was calculated for the ASTM Charpy specimen from the obtained maximum critical load. Also, the finite element model was developed to figure out the stress distributions for Charpy specimen with different notch angles subject to 3 point bending load which is equivalent to the load applied in the experiment.
A fractal analysis on fracture surface of aluminium-particulate SiC composites was attempted. As the volume fraction of SiC in composites increases, the fractal dimension tends to increase. However, no correlation between the fractal dimension and the fracture toughness in terms of critical energy release rate was observed. Since the fractal dimension represents the roughness of fracture surface, the fracture toughness would be a function of not only fracture surface roughness but also additional parameters. Thus the applicability of fractal analysis to the estimation of fracture toughness must depend on the proper choice and interpretation of additioal paramerters. In this paper, the size of characteristic strctural unit for fracture was considered as an additional parameter. As a result, the size appeared to be a function of only volume fraction of SiC. Finally, a master curve for fracture toughness of aluminium-particulate SiC composites was proposed as a function of fractal dimension and volume fraction of SiC.

This experimental research evaluated the length of crack extension with the measured compliances as the mutual comparison factors instead of the method proposed in ASTM E561-80. And this research measured the R-curves with the application to the concept of the strain energy release rate that was formulated from the inelastic energy absorbed during the crack growth. With the interpretation of R-curves, this research obtained the starting point of the unstable crack growth, and compared the values of critical fracture toughness with each other, and then examined the effects of variations of the maximum size of coarse aggregate and the thickness of specimen on the values of the critical fracture toughness.

Although handicapped by the inability to bridge the size gap between small laboratory sample and large engineering component, the V charpy test sample method does possess certain advantages, such as each of preparation, simplicity of test method, speed, low cost in test machinery, and low cost per test. On the other hand, the COD test method does posses advantages, which reduce the size gap between the laboratory sample and actual engineering component. Consequently, the correlation between V charpy absorbed energy and the critical COD value is required for estimating critical COD value from the simple V charpy test results. In this paper, the high tensile strength steel AH36 plate specimens having a single edge cracked notch were investigated to find out the correlation between V charpy absorbed energy and critical COD value in the welded parts under such various welding methods as shielded metal arc welding, the submerged arc welding and the electro gas welding by means of V charpy impact test and static 3-point bending test. Main results obtained are as follow ; 1. The relationships between V charpy absorbed energy Wc' and critical COD value ($\delta_c$)show; $\delta_c$=0.0065 Wc'+0.1906. 2. Ductile- brittle transition behaviours can be estimated by means of fracture appearance and general yielding behaviours. 3. The V charpy absorbed energy of SMAW is higher than that of SAW, EGW and similar relationships are obtained in the COD tests.
