  • To ensure the serviceability requirements of PSC composite girder bridges, it is essential to predict the stresses and deformations of the structure under service load conditions. Stresses and deformations vary continuously with time due to the effects of creep and shrinkage of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel. The importance of these time-dependent effects is much more pronounced in precast prestressed concrete structures built in stages than in those constructed in one operation. In this paper, time-dependent analyses for PSC composite bridges using 30m standard girders have been conducted considering with the variation of the times of introducing initial prestressing forces and casting concrete. A computer program has been developed for the time-dependent analysis of simple or continuous PSC composite girders and parametric studies are conducted. Based on the numerical results, it is investigated the long-term behaviors of PSC composite girder bridges and discussed the limitations of the current codes for the prestress loss.

  • In this study, the construction of a reinforced concrete bridge pier was analyzed from durability point of view. The goal of the study is to analyze the crack iniation condition due to construction and present some recommendations for construction conditions of the reinforced concrete bridge pier. The bridge is located at the western port area of Shenzhen, where the climate is high temperature and humidity. To control the cracking of concrete, a construction simulation was carried out for a heat transfer problem as well as a thermal stress problem. A shrinkage model for heat produced due to cement hydration and a Burger constitutive model to simulate the creep effect are used. The modelling based on Femmasse(C) is verified by comparing with the testing results of a real underground abutment. For the bridge pier, the temperature and stress distribution, as well as their evolution with time are shown. To simulate the construction condition, four initial concrete temperatures ($5^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$) and three demoulding time tips (48h, 72h, 96h) are investigated. From the results, it is concluded that a high initial concrete temperature could result in a high extreme internal temperature, which causes the early peak temperature and the larger principle stresses. The demoulding time seems to be less important for the chosen study cases. Currently used 72 hours in the construction practice may be a reasonable choice.

  • Although researches on the beams strengthened with Fiber reinforced Polymers (FRPs) have recently been conducted around the world, there are few researches on the beams with FRPs under a sustained load. This paper presents the behavior of the beams with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) under a sustained load during 300 days. Strains of steel and FRP reinforcement were measured in order to investigate the behavior of the beams. Additionally, Adjusted Effective Modulus Method (AEMM) and Ghali and Farve's method were used to predict increase in the stress and strain caused by creep and shrinkage. Through the experiment, it was found that the beam with CFRP is more effective than the beam with GFRP in terms of flexural strengthening. Compared with analytical results, it was indicated that strains of tension steels were overestimated, whereas strains of compression steels were underestimated.

  • This paper deals with a research about the time-dependent behavior analysis for pre-tensioned high-performance concrete(HPC) members. By improving AASHTO-LRFD(2004) method for predicting the creep and shrinkage of normal concrete, and the relaxation of prestressing tendon, a time-dependent behavior analysis of high-performance concrete structures has been introduced. Two methods, the step-function method and the time-step method have been incorporated in the time-dependent analysis. The developed program can predict the initial and time-dependent losses of prestressing forces and the deflections of high-performance concrete structures. The present model has been verified by comparing with the experimental results from the test of time-dependent behaviors of pre-tensioned members using high-performance concrete. From this, the current model gives good relations with the experimental results, but the AASHTO method is not good for the prediction of time-dependent behaviors of high-performance concrete members.

  • Accurate prediction of time-dependent column shortening is essential for tall buildings in both strength and serviceability aspects. The uncertainty associated with assumed values for concrete properties such as strength, creep, and shrinkage coefficients should be considered for the prediction of time-dependent column shortening of tall concrete buildings. In this study, the column shortenings of 41-story tall concrete building are predicted using monte carlo simulation technique based on the probabilistic analysis. The probabilistic column shortenings considering confidence intervals are compared with the actual column shortenings by field measurement. The time-dependent strains measured at tall bearing wall building were generally lower than the predicted strains and the measured values fell within a range ${\mu}-1.64$, confidence level 90%.

  • High volume slag concrete is attracting new attention and are thought to have promising potential for industrial applications, partly due to the climate debate, but especially due to their very low heat of hydration and their good durability in chemically aggressive environments. However, High volume slag concretes tend to have slower strength development especially. In this study, the effect of anhydrite ($CaSO_4$) on the mechanical and durability performance of high volume slag concrete were investigated. The main variables were anhydrite contents (0, 4, 6, 8, 10%). Test results show that 4~8% anhydrite concrete have improved engineering properties (hydration, compressive strength, shrinkage, creep, carbonation) as control concrete at early ages.

  • Excessive long-term slab deflection caused by construction load is a critical issue for the design of concrete slabs, as long span flat plates become popular for tall buildings. In the present study, the effect of construction load causing early slab cracking on the long-term deflection was theoretically studied. On the basis of the result, a numerical analysis method was developed to predict the long-term deflection of flat plates. In the proposed method, immediate deflection due to slab cracking and long-term effect of creep and shrinkage were considered. To verify the construction load effect, long-term slab deflections were measured in actual flat plate buildings under construction. The results showed that the immediate deflection due to the construction load increased significantly the long-term deflection. The proposed method was used to predict the deflections of the buildings. The results were compared with the measurement results. The predictions agree well with the long-term deflections of flat plate affected by construction load.

  • Recently, building of long span bridge is increasing and cable stayed bridges have large portion in civil projects. As the spans of bridges become longer, steel cable-stayed bridges have been constructed mainly for slim structure. But in many case, pylons are constructed by concrete for the stability of structures and the economy. Concrete is greatly influenced by the long-term behavior like creep and drying shrinkage, so analysis of stress redistribution and structural change in construction is required. In this study, as a cable stayed bridge with concrete pylon, Incheon Bridge is analyzed by nonlinear FEM analysis program RCAHEST. Through this analysis, time dependent effect of concrete pylon to whole cable stayed bridge system is studied.

  • CFT (Concrete-Filled Tube) is a type of steel column comprised of steel tube and concrete. Steel tube holds concrete and the concrete inside tube takes charge of compressive load. This study presents structural performance of the CFT column which has 73~100 MPa high strength concrete inside. Fluidity, mechanical compression, pump pressure test in flexible pipe were conducted for understanding properties of the high strength concrete. Material properties were achieved by various experimental tests, such as slump, slump flow, air content, U-box, O-Lot, L-flow. In addition, mock-up tests were conducted to monitor concrete filling, hydration heat, compressive strength. From construction sites in Sang-am dong and University of Seo-kang, long-term behaviors could be effectively predicted in terms of ACI 209 material model considering elastic deformation, shrinkage and creep.

  • The long-term behaviors of prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridges are considerably influenced by the time dependant material characteristics such as creep and shrinkage. This study investigated the influences of the change of relative humidity by application of the CEB-FIP model and ACI model, which are generally used in the prediction of long-term behavior of concrete structures. In case of the moment of girder, CEB-FIP model predicted a bigger effect of relative humidity change than the ACI model. Furthermore, the effect was significant. Also, the long-term behaviors between these models were different each other even under the same material condition. Therefore, the prediction of the long-term behavior should be compensated after comparative analysis with the results of material tests of each construction site and between the different models.
