The modeling of crack initiation and propagation is very important for the failure analysis of concrete. The cracking process in concrete is quite different from that of other materials, such as metal and glass, in that it is not a sudden onset of new free surface but a continuous forming and connecting of microcracks. The failure process of concrete by cracking causes irreversible deformations and stiffness degradation. Those phenomenon can be modeled using plasticity and damage theory in macroscopic aspect. In this study, a plastic-damage model based on homogenized crack model considering velocity discontinuity and damage variable which is a function of plastic strain is proposed for fracture analysis of concrete. Finally, the plastic-damage model is verified with experimental data.

The oxide film was formed in hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) environment by potentio-dynamic method. Corrosion potentials and rates of the X-65 and X-80 line pipe steels were -0.3495 $V_{SHE}$, $2.833{\times}10^{-3}A/cm^2$ and 0.2716 $V_{SHE}$ and $2.533{\times}10^{-3}A/cm^2$, respectively. Surface composition analysis of the oxide film contained sulfur. Thermodynamic analysis of the HIC solution chemistry suggested that the oxide phase consisted of iron sulfate. Dynamic nano-indentation method applied to determine nano-hardnesses of the oxide film and base metal hardness.
The aim of the paper is to present some results about the influence of rheological phenomena on steel-concrete composite beams. Both the cases of slab with normal and high performance concrete for one and two-span beams are analysed. A new finite element model that allows taking into account creep, shrinkage and cracking in tensile zones for concrete, along with non-linear behaviour of connection, steel beam and reinforcement, has been used. The main parameters that affect the response of the composite beam under the service load are highlighted. The influence of shrinkage on the slip over the supports is analysed, together with the cracking along the beam. At last, by performing a collapse analysis after a long-term analysis, the influence of rheological phenomena on the ductility demand of connection and reinforcement is analysed.

Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a chemical reaction in concrete that alkalis in cement react with reactive silica in aggregate in the presence of water. When ASR takes place, it produces gels that absorb water and expand. Swelling of ASR gels can damage concrete and cause cracking and volume expansion in concrete structure. In this paper, mechanical consequences of ASR on concrete are simulated by a finite element (FE) analysis. An FE model of concrete is built. The evolution of concrete mechanical properties subjected to ASR is achieved by FE analyses. The constitutive model of concrete is attained via the FE analysis. A case study is used to demonstrate the proposed method. The simulated results using the proposed model are in good agreement with the observations of concrete with ASR reported in the literature. The results can be used for a basic research to enhance durability of concrete slab tracks and concrete railway sleepers.

This study attempts to develop a rational approach to flexural concrete beam analysis with crack growth. In order to develope analytical solutions, several simplification and assumption are made and the Hillerborg fictitious crack model is adapted for new rational approach to the flexural concrete beam. To provide desired results, the concrete beams with various conditions(more than 126 beam conditions) are analyzed. Before producing the results, these assumptions are founded to be justified by comparison with a FE analysis. The results for each condition of the beams are presented in terms of crack lengths, the strength and cracking stability of concrete beams. And also size effects in a flexural concrete beam is studied using a new flexural cracking model.
This paper presents a method for the nonlinear analysis of beam elements subjected to the cyclical combined actions of torsion, biaxial flexure and axial forces based on an extension of the disturbed compression field (DSFM). The theoretical model is based on a hybrid formulation between the full rotation of the cracks model and the fixed direction of the cracking model. The described formulation, which treats cracked concrete as an orthotropic material, includes a new approach for the evaluation of the re-orientation of both the compression field and the deformation field by removing the restriction of their coincidence. A new equation of congruence permits evaluating the deformation of the middle line. The problem consists in the solution of coupled nonlinear simultaneous equations expressing equilibrium, congruence and the constitutive laws. The proposed method makes it possible to determine the deformations of the beam element according to the external stresses applied.

In this papers, an analytical model which can simulate the post-cracking behavior and tension stiffening effect in a reinforced concrete(RC) tension member is proposed. Unlike the classical approaches using the bond stress-slip relationship or the assumed bond stress distribution, the tension stiffening effect at post-cracking stage is quantified on the basis of polynomial strain distribution functions of steel and concrete, and its contribution is implemented into the reinforcing steel. The introduced model can be effectively used in constructing the stress-strain curve of concrete at post-cracking stage, and the loads carried by concrete and reinforcing steel along the member axis can be directly evaluated on the basis of the introduced model. In advance, the prediction of cracking loads and elongations of reinforced steel using the introduced model shows good agreement with results from the previous analytical studies and experimental data.
Thermomechanical characteristics of rocks such as thermal shock, thermal expansion, thermal cracking were experimentally investigaed using Iksan granite, Cheonan tonalite and Chung-ju dolomite to obtain the basic data for proper design and Chung-ju dolomite to obtain the basic data for proper design and stability analysis of underground structures subjected to temperature changes. The effect of thermal shock did not appear when the heating speed was under 3$^{\circ}C$/min. and there existed little difference between multi-staged cyclic heating and single-cycled heating. Thermal expansion of rocks was affected by mineral composition, crack porosity and the degree of thermal craking. In quartz-beraring multimineralic rocks such as Iksan granite and Cheonan tonalite, the thermal expansion coefficient increaseed continuously with temperature rise, but that of Chung-ju dolomite which was a monomineralic rock showed a constant value for the temperature above 250$^{\circ}C$, Chung-ju dolomite yielded the lowest critical threshold temperature(Tc) of 100$^{\circ}C$ and unstable thermal cracking was initiated above the new threshold temperature(Tc')of 300$^{\circ}C$. Above Tc' thermal cracks grew but they were not interconnected. Iksan granite showed closing of microcracks to the temperature of 100$^{\circ}C$, then expanded linearly to Tc of 200$^{\circ}C$. Above Tc, thermal cracking was initiated and progressed rapidly and almost all the grain boundaries were cracked at 600$^{\circ}C$. Cheonan tonalite also showed similar behavior to iksan granite except that Tc was 350$^{\circ}C$ and that thermal cracks propagated more rapidly. Thermal expansions calculated by Turner's equation were found to be valid in predicting the thermal expansion and cracking behavior of rocks.
This study was performed to estimate fatigue life of polymer-modified and reinforced overlay asphalt mixtures with respect to reflection cracking in asphalt overlay pavement. In order to achieve the goal, the expedited reflection cracking test method was developed and applied to various mixtures and the results were compared one another with respect to the resistant characteristics of reflection cracking. The theoretical prediction equation of fatigue life for each mixture was suggested based on statistical analysis of experimental test results in the flexural failure mode. Since coefficients of correlation between estimated values and measured values were very high ($r^2=0.95$ or higher), the prediction model can be used for relative comparison of various pavement overlay choices to be used in the field.

Concrete guide rail and median barrier are an attached RC member, however they are vulnerable to cracking due to slip form construction and large surface of member. In this study, causes and pattern of cracking are analyzed through assessment and NDT (Non-Destructive Technique) evaluation for concrete guide rail and median barrier on highway structure. For this work, analysis on drying shrinkage and hydration heat are performed considering installation period, and plastic shrinkage is also analyzed considering their environmental conditions. From the evaluation, plastic settlement around steel location, drying/ plastic shrinkage, and aggregate segregation are inferred to be the main causes of cracking in the structures. The crack causes and patterns are schematized and techniques of crack-control are suggested. Furthermore concrete guide rail/ median barrier in the bridge on the sea are vulnerable to cracking at early age so that special attentions should be paid at the stages of material selection and construction.
