  • Fatigue crack growth tests were conducted on urban railway wheel steel under mode I and mixed-mode conditions. Fatigue crack growth rates were evaluated in terms of equivalent stress intensity factor ranges, using both the extended and projected crack lengths. The equivalent stress intensity factor range with the growth rate results obtained under mode I loading conditions can be used to predict the crack growth rate under mixed-mode loading conditions. Extended crack length rather than projected crack length is appropriate for the prediction of the crack growth rate under the mixed-mode loading conditions.

  • For the prediction of the crack growth initiation from a blunt notch or a precrack in a prestrained material under plane strain tension and small-scale yielding conditions, a microscopic fracture criterion is proposed in terms of the crack tip opening displacement(COD) needed for the attainment of fracture strain at a microstructural distance. Smooth blunting of a crack tip with an initial root radius is assumed, and strain distributions on the crack-line axis are calculated at each deformation stage until the distributions against an original distance normalized to the COD are insensitive to an initial root radius. This case of no initial-root-radius effect is taken as for a sharp crack tip, on which the criterion is applied to determine the characteristic length of material from a critical COD for a fatigue-precracked specimen. The predicted COD at the fracture initiation from a crack with an initial root radius or a prestraining shows reasonable agreement with experimental values.

  • The possibility of detecting a crack in L-shaped pipes filled with fluid based on measurement of transverse natural frequencies is examined. The problem is solved by representing the crack by a massless rotational spring, simulating the out-of-plane transverse vibration only without solving the coupled torsional vibration and using the transfer matrix method for solution of the governing equation. The theoretical solutions are verified by experiments. The cracks considered are external, circumferentially oriented and have straight front. Pipes made of aluminium and mild steel are tested with water as internal fluid. Crack size to pipe thickness ratio ranging from 0.20 to 0.57 and fluid (gauge) pressure in the range of 0 to 10 atmospheres are examined. The rotational spring stiffness is obtained by an inverse vibration analysis and deflection method. The details of the two methods are given. The results by the two methods are presented graphically and show good agreement. Crack locations are also determined by the inverse analysis. The maximum absolute error in the location is 13.80%. Experimentally determined variation of rotational spring stiffness with ratio of crack size to thickness is utilized to predict the crack sizes. The maximum absolute errors in prediction of crack size are 17.24% and 16.90% for aluminium and mild steel pipes respectively.

  • The fatigue life of ship structure under cyclic loading condition is made up of initiation and propagation stages. In this study, crack growth test is carried out on large scale structure test specimens and fracture mechanical analysis is performed. The fatigue lives measured from fatigue tests are compared with DNV, Matsuoka and BS 5400 S-N curve. And to predict the crack initiation life, S-N curve, corresponding to crack length 20mm at welded joint, is developed based on hot spot stress range. Also crack propagation life is calculated using crack growth equation. Consequently, computed crack propagation life is compared with experiment results.

  • It is difficult to predict the accurate fatigue life of the ship structure because of load uncertainty and load redistribution at the ship structure members. As one of studies for accurate evaluation and prediction of fatigue life, it is a promising way to detect the crack previously by attaching the Fatigue Indicator Sensor (FIS) at the crack prediction region. In order to predict the fatigue life of the ship structure by using FIS, it is required to know previously the crack propagation characteristics according to pre-notch shapes. In this study, we obtained the stress distribution phase, stress concentration factors and stress intensity factor of various pre-notch shapes through FEA. Additionally, we conducted the fatigue test and obtained the characteristics of crack propagation according to the pre-notch shapes through comparison between the fatigue test and the FEA. Consequently, we classified the pre-notch shape into 3 categories: Long, Medium, and Short life type. On the basis of the numerical and experimental results, the FIS can be developed.

  • The Newman-Raju formula and contour integral-based finite element analyses(FEAs) have been widely used to assess crack growth rates and residual lives at crack locations in ships or offshore structures, but the Newman-Raju formula is known to be less accurate for the complicated weld details and the conventional FEA-based contour integral approach needs concentrated efforts to construct FEA models. Recently, an extended finite element method(XFEM) has been proposed to reduce those modeling efforts with reliable accuracy. Stress intensity factors(SIFs) from the approaches such as the Newman-Raju formula, conventional FEA-based J-integral, and XFEM-based J-integral were compared for an infinitely long plate with a propagating elliptic crack. It was concluded that the XFEM approach was far reliable in terms of prediction ability of SIFs. Assuming a 25 year-aged coast guard patrol ship had the prescribed cracks at the bracket toes attached to longitudinal stiffeners in way of deck and bottom, SIFs were derived based on the three approaches. To obtain axial tension loads acting on the longitudinal stiffeners, long term hull girder bending moments were assumed to obey Weibull distribution of which two parameters were decided from a reference (DNV, 2014). For the complicated weld details, it was concluded that the XFEM approach could cost-effectively and accurately estimate the crack growth rates and residual lives of ship structures.

  • In this paper, we propose a GoogleNet transfer learning and CNN-LSTM combination method to improve the time-series prediction performance for crack detection using crack data captured inside the sewer pipes. LSTM can solve the long-term dependency problem of CNN, so spatial and temporal characteristics can be considered at the same time. The predictive performance of the proposed method is excellent in all test variables as a result of comparing the RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) for time series sections using the crack data inside the sewer pipe. In addition, as a result of examining the prediction performance at the time of data generation, the proposed method was verified that it is effective in predicting crack detection by comparing with the existing CNN-only model. If the proposed method and experimental results obtained through this study are utilized, it can be applied in various fields such as the environment and humanities where time series data occurs frequently as well as crack data of concrete structures.

  • This study describes the fatigue characteristics for Al2024 alloy, which is aircraft structure material. For this work, the plane-strain fracture toughness test, the plane-stress fracture toughness test and the crack growth rates test were conducted under the standard testing method. Test equipment is a computer-controlled closed-loop fatigue testing machine. The data of each test result is very important to aircraft structure reliability estimation, life prediction, design analysis, endurance analysis and damage tolerance analysis. In addition, the fatigue crack growth threshold($\DeltaKth$) value decreased as the stress ratio increased. Also, $\DeltaKth$ decreased as the thickness increased in LT, TL directions.

  • Tire belt durability is characterized by the initiation of a crack at the belt edge region, and the propagation of the crack until the ply is separated. Experimental methods have been used to analysis of the belt durability in the cord-reinforced rubber composite tires, but it takes much cost and time to make experiments. In this paper, a finite element method to analyze the fatigue life of a crack at the belt edge of tires is presented. The fatigue life is analyzed by using a three-dimensional Finite Element Modeling. This method includes a global-local finite element analysis to provide the detail necessary to model explicitly an internal crack and use of the J-integral for energy release rate evaluation.

  • This paper contains experimental studies on the flexural cracking behabior of PPC one-way slabs. Three post tensioned bonded PPC slabs with the same prestressing ratio and ultimate moment strength were tested. Based upon test results, this paper also presents the crack width prediction formula PPC slab. According to the crack theory developed mainly in Europe, crack width formula is given as the product of crack spacing and mean steel strain after decompression. Aaaaverage crack spacing formula is composed of many factors mainly such as concrete cover, concrete effective area in tension, sum of reinforcing bars perimeters and mixed reinforcements. In particular, it is very important to specify the bond characteristics of mixed reinforcements, since bond characteristics of PC bars are different from those of non-tensioned deformed bars. For this reason, a reduced bond coefficients for PS bars is employed in this study.
