The effects of GABA and glutamate on the horizontal cells were explored by an intracellular recording method to discern the mechanisms of receptive field formation by chemical coupling in the catfish outer retina. The results suggest that the horizontal cells of the catfish retina might use GABA as their transmitters and that the GABAergic system contributes to the formation of receptive fields of the horizontal cells. GABAC receptors may be involved in a chemical coupling between horizontal cells and concerned with the depolarizing actions by GABA on horizontal cells in the catfish retina. Since the chloride equilibrium potential is more positive than the dark membrane potential in horizontal cells, GABA released from a horizontal cell may depolarize the neighboring horizontal cells. Thus a chemical coupling between horizontal cells may be formed. $GABA_A$ receptors also may be involved in the negative feedback mechanism between photoreceptor and horizontal cell. And glutamate may be involved in connecting positive and negative feedback systems since it potentiated the GABA's actions. Therefore, it is presumed that large receptive fields in the catfish retina are formed not only by electrical coupling but also by chemical coupling between horizontal cells. And information travels laterally by pathways involving both electrical coupling composed of gap junctions and chemical coupling in the retinal network.

An EBeam (electron beam)-catalyst coupling technique has been developed to control aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by annexing the catalyst with already existing EBeam technology. In this study, toluene emitted from various industrial coating processes was selected as a representative VOC. The concentration of toluene of concern was 200 ppm. There was an increase in the removal efficieny of toluene by increasing the absorbed dose (kGy) in the EBeam-only and the EBeam-catalyst coupling systems. Compared to EBeam-only system under the same existing EBeam-Pt $1\%$ coupling conditions, EBeam-Pt $1\%$ coupling system revealed 36, 29, 30$\%$ increase in toluene treatmenet at (5, 6.7, 8.7 kGy), respectively. In addition, $O_{3}$ was decreased and CO, $CO_{2}$ were increased by increasing the absorbed dose (kGy) in the EBeam-catalyst (Pt $1\%$, Cu $1\%$) coupling systems. Therefore, it was concluded that the EBeam-catalyst coupling system had a synergy effect on toluene control, compared to the EBeam-only system.

No specific guidelines are available for computing the bearing strength of connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall in a hybrid wall system. There were carried out analytical and experimental studies on connection between steel coupling beam and concrete shear wall in a hybrid wall system. The bearing stress at failure in the concrete below the embedded steel coupling beam section is related to the concrete compressive strength and the ratio of the width of the embedded steel coupling beam section to the thickness of the shear walls. Experiments were carried out to determine the factors influencing the bearing strength of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The test variables included the reinforcement details that confer a ductile behavior in connection between steel coupling beam and shear wall, i.e., the auxiliary stud bolts attached to the steel beam flanges and the transverse ties at the top and the bottom steel beam flanges. In addition, additional test were conducted to verify the strength equations of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The proposed equations in this study were in good agreement with both our test results and other test data from the literature.
Fiber reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) materials that exhibit strain-hardening and multiple cracking properties under tension were recently developed as innovative building materials for construction. This study aims at exploring the use of FRCC on the seismic performance of coupling beams with conventional reinforcement. Experimental tests were conducted on seven FRCC precast coupling beams with small span-to-depth ratios and one ordinary concrete coupling beam for comparison. The crack and failure modes of the specimens under the low cycle reversed loading were observed, and the hysteretic characteristics, deformation capacity, energy dissipation capacity and stiffness degradation were also investigated. The results show that the FRCC coupling beams have good ductility and energy dissipation capacities compared with the ordinary concrete coupling beam. As the confinement stirrups and span-to-depth ratio increase, the deformation capacity and energy dissipation capacity of coupling beams can be improved significantly. Finally, based on the experimental analysis and shear mechanism, a formula for the shear capacity of the coupling beams with small span-to-depth ratios was also presented, and the calculated results agreed well with the experimental results.

Blends of silicone rubber (VMQ) and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) were prepared using a melt blending technique in the presence and absence of glass fiber and coupling agents. The effect of glass fiber and coupling agents on the thermal, dynamic mechanical, morphological pro-perties and cure characteristics of VMQ/LCP blends were studied. The vinyl silane coupling agent showed a significant effect on the above mentioned properties of VMQ/LCP blends by reacting at the interface between VMQ and LCP. The viscosity of the VMQ/LCP blends decreased with the addition of a coupling agent. A substantial improvement in storage modulus of VMQ/LCP blends was observed in the presence of glass fiber and coupling agents. However, as a coupling agent vinyl silane proved to be better than amine for the VMQ/LCP-glass-containing blends. The thermal stability of the pure silicone rubber was higher than those of the blends. This high thermal stability of silicone rubber was attributed to the Si-O-Si bonds. However, the thermal stability of the blends decreased further in the presence of a coupling agent, possibly due to a decrease in blend crystallinity.

Top synthetic spin valves with structure Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe(P 1)/Ru/CoFe(P2)/FeMn/Ta on Si (100) substrate with natural oxide were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering system. We have changed only the thickness in free layers and the thickness difference (Pl-P2) in two ferromagnetic layers separated by Ru, and investigated the effect of magnetic film thickness on interlayer coupling field in spin valve with synthetic antiferromagnet. According to the decrease of free layer thickness, interlayer coupling field was increased due to the magnetostatic coupling(orange peel coupling). In case of t$\_$P1/>t$\^$P2/, interlayer coupling field agreed well with the modified Neel model suggested in conventional spin valve structures by Kools et al. However, in case of t$\_$P1/>t$\^$P2/, it was found that the interlayer coupling field was not explained by the Modified Neel Model and was confirmed the necessity of further remodeling. The dependence of Cu thickness on the interlayer coupling field was investigated and 10 Oe of interlayer coupling field was obtained when the Cu thickness is 32 $\AA$.

Shear wall systems behave as individual wall because of openings like window and elevator cage. When coupling beams are installed in shear walls, they will have high strength and stiffness so that be less damaged by lateral loads like earthquake. However, coupling beam is difficult construction method. And arranging reinforcement of slender coupling beams are especially hard. It is because the details of coupling beam provided by ACI 318 are complex. In this paper, experiments were conducted using coupling beams with 3.5 aspect ratio to improve the details of slender coupling beams provided by ACI 318. Two specimens were proposed for this study. One specimen applied with bundled diagonally reinforcement only. Another specimen applied both bundled diagonally reinforcement and High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composite (HPFRCC) so that coupling beams have half of transverse reinforcement. All specimen were compared with a coupling beam designed according to ACI 318 and were evaluated with hysteretic behaviors. Test results showed that the performance of two specimen suggested in this study were similar to that of coupling beam designed according to current criteria. And it was considered that simplification of the details of reinforcement would be available if transverse reinforcement was reduced by using bundled diagonally reinforcement and HPFRCC.

Design rules of directional coupler optical switches are discussed in consideration of parasitic couplings in the bending section. The parasitic coupling phenomenon is analyzed based on the coupled-mode theory and the solutions are represented in the form of the transfer matrix. The modified switching conditions due to the parasitic coupling are derived and the resultant switching diagrams are illustrated. It is revealed that the parallel section's length needs to be adjustd less than the coupling length $l_c(=\pi/2\textsc{k}o)$ to obtain the desired crosstalk and that the adjustment depends on the strength of the parasitic coupling. However, it is discovered that, for weak parasitic coupling, the switching voltage does not need to be altered but may maintain the same value as if no parasitic coupling is taken into account.

This paper proposes a three-axis coupling controller designed to improve the contouring accuracy in machining of 3D nonlinear contours. The proposed coupling controller is based on an innovative 3D contour error model and a PID control law. The novel contour error model provides almost exact calculation of contour errors in real-time for arbitrary contours and can be integrated with any type of existing interpolator. In the proposed method, three axes of motion are coordinated by the proposed coupling controller along with a proportional controller for each axis. The proposed contour error model and coupling controller are evaluated through computer simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed 3-axis coupling controller with the new contour error model substantially can improve the contouring accuracy by order of magnitude compared with the existing uncoupled controllers in high-speed machining of nonlinear contours.

In this paper, the inductance characteristics of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) considering cross-coupling effect is analyzed. It is known that the IPMSM has it's operating point at the saturated region. So the cross-coupling effect exists, therefore cross-coupling inductance exists. With the application of Fixed Permeability Method (FPM), we can obtain more exact inductance characteristics of IPMSM. In this paper, a novel method based on the FPM is proposed, which can consider the cross-coupling effect. And the cross-coupling inductance which is the analysis result is shown. Finally, the validity of proposed method is verified by the comparison with the experimental result.
