The operation of flocculation process and the evaluation thereof have been mainly based on G, t and $G{\times}t$ values which are available from design guidelines and texts. However, their suggested ranges are too wide to find the optimum condition specific to a particular water treatment plant and none of the existing method can be used to evaluate and suggest the optimum operational condition. Recently, a commercially available particle counter is found to be useful in determining the flocculation process based on the particle dynamics. The optimum condition is defined as one that best suits the purpose of flocculation; the number of small particles should decrease, while that of large particles should increase. The experiments were performed at two conventional water treatment plants in Korea, one with horizontal mechanical flocculators, and another with vertical type mechanical flocculators. In this paper, experiences to evaluate the flocculation process and to suggest the optimum operation condition will be presented. Although particle counting method is found to be beneficial compared to any other existing methods, the optimum condition is very much site-specific and should be evaluated at each water treatment plant for different conditions.
The removal efficiency of organic compounds and the toxicity evaluation of microorganism have been studied in dye wastewater treatment using $UV/TiO_2$ and $UV/H_2O_2$ photooxidation system. Sample waters tested in this work were raw dye wastewater and dye wastewater treated in $UV/TiO_2$ and $UV/H_2O_2$ photooxidation system respectively. Total organic carbon(TOC) removal rate was 50% in $UV/TiO_2$ process and 80% in $UV/H_2O_2$ process. It has been investigated with colony counting agar method and paper disk method whether the type of treatment process has affected the microorganism growth. In the raw wastewater, more than four types of microorganisms have survived. But, little of microorganisms were alive at TOC removal rate of 50% in $UV/TiO_2$ system. In contrast to that, two types of microorganisms were found at TOC removal rate of 80% in $UV/H_2O_2$ system.

With growth of nano-bio industry, it is of significant importance to develop an automated system to exploit cell behaviors, including migration, mitosis, apoptosis, shape deformation of individual cells and their interactions among cells in the process of cell growth. In this paper, we proposed preprocessing techniques, a classification method which classifies clusters (overlapping multiple cells) from cells and an automated method which counts the number of cells and clusters in order to analyze 2D or 3D deformations of the cells in the real-time images from microscope in the cell culture. We conducted the 3T3 cell images taken from each thirty-minute interval. It showed the average 99.8% accuracy automatically for separating cells and clusters.
Liposomal cephalexin was used m the dry period treatment of bovine mastitis due to Staphylococcus aureus. Liposomes were prepared by stable plurilamellar vesicle(SPLV) process. The shape and size of SPLVs were examined by transmission electron microscopy. The entrapping efficiency and stability of SPLVs were determined by high performance liquid chromatography or liquid scintillation counting. The size of SPLVs ranged from 0.1 to $4.01{\mu}m$ in diameter, with an entrapping efficiency of cephalexin of 25.8 %. The formulation of liposomal cephalexin was used for treatment were SPLV-entrapped cephalexin and free cephalexin with total cephalexin concentration of 250mg per quarters. All quarters were infused intramammarily at the end of lactation period by liposomal cephalexin, free cephalexin, or blank liposome with free cephalexin. The number of quarters cured by liposomal cephalexin(14/15 quarters, 93 %) was significantly higher than that by free cephalexin(7/15 quarters, 46%). or by blank liposome with free cephalexin(8/15 quarters, 53 % ) (p<0.05).

A banknote counter is a machine that automates counting the money in some agencies to treat much banknotes as well as general banking agencies. The banknote counter materialized in this paper is the machine that adds the function of banknote sorting, detecting plural banknote and detecting counterfeit banknote to an existing banknote counter. The technique of sensor signal processing are used for banknote sorting. The technique of sensor application and data processing are used for detecting counterfeit banknote. The technique of precision equipment design and microprocessor application are used for high speed count. Software improved in debugging and difficulties to link with additional hardware. It was materialized through effective control algorithm and real-time signal processing with C-language on the basis of RTOS(real-time operating system) Photodiode, its applications and a magnetic resistance sensor are used as a sensor device with regard to hardware cost -cutting and process velocity. PCF80C552-24 of Philips using Intel I8051 core is used as a control microprocessor. As the results so far achieved, counterfeit banknotes made by the use of a color duplicator and a color Printer, are distinguished from real banknotes through mixing an optical with a magnetic sensor. and, in case that there are some different banknotes while counting, it is prevented for them to be counted without discriminating from the same kind of banknotes in addition to the fu notion of banknote sorting.
The real-time enrichment and detection of pathogens are serious issues and rapidly evolving field of research because of the ability of these pathogens to cause infectious diseases. In general, bacterial detection is accomplished by conventional colony counting or by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) after DNA extraction. As colony counting requires considerable time to cultivate, PCR is an attractive method for rapid detection. A small number of pathogens can cause diseases. Hence, a pretreatment process, such as enrichment is essential for detecting bacteria in an actual environment. Thus, in this study, we developed a microfluidic chip capable of performing rapid enrichment of bacteria and the extraction of their genes. A lectin, i.e., Concanavalin A (ConA), which shows binding affinity to the surface of most bacteria, was coated on the surface of magnetic particles to nonspecifically capture bacteria. It was subsequently concentrated through magnetic forces in a microfluidic channel. To lyse the captured bacteria, magnetic particles were irradiated by a wavelength of 532nm. The photo-thermal effect on the particles was sufficient for extracting DNA, which was consequently utilized for the identification of bacteria. Our device will help monitor the existence of bacteria in various environmental situations such as water, air, and soil.

Fatigue life is an important consideration for the design of offshore structures in deep sea and in hostile environments. In this paper, the effect of the bandwidth of random stresses on the fatigue life estimation of fixed offshore structures is investigated. The dynamic analysis is carried out in the frequency domain by using the equivalent linearization technique. Fatigue damages are calculated by two stress cycle counting methods; i.e., the narrow band method and the wide band method using rainflow counting technique. Example studies are carried out for two different structures. Numerical results indicate that the wide band approach, which is more complex but theoretically more appropriate pridicts smaller values of fatigue damages compared with those by the narrow band approach for all seastate conditions. Such trend becomes more apparent for the cases of severe seastates where the bandwidth of random stresses becomes large.

Purpose: The present study aimed at image processing methods for automatic cell pattern recognition and morphological analysis for tissue engineering applications. The primary aim was to ascertain the novel algorithm of adaptive brightness correction from microscopic images for use as a potential image analysis. Methods: General microscopic image of cells has a minor problem which the central area is brighter than edge-area because of the light source. This may affect serious problems to threshold process for cell-number counting or cell pattern recognition. In order to compensate the problem, we processed to find the central point of brightness and give less weight-value as the distance to centroid. Results: The results presented that microscopic images through the brightness correction were performed clearer than those without brightness compensation. And the classification of mixed cells was performed as well, which is expected to be completed with pattern recognition later. Beside each detection ratio of hBMSCs and HeLa cells was 95% and 92%, respectively. Conclusions: Using this novel algorithm of adaptive brightness correction could control the easier approach to cell pattern recognition and counting cell numbers.

Many libraries utilize RFID tags for checking in and out of books. However, the recognition rate of this automatic process may depend on the orientation of antennas and RFID tags. Therefore we need supplemental systems to improve the recognition rate. The proposed algorithm sets up the ROI of the book existing area from the input image and then performs Canny edge detection algorithm to extract edges of books. Finally Hough line transform algorithm allows to detect the number of books from the extracted edges. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we applied our method to 350 book images under various circumstances. We then analyzed the performance of proposed method from results using recognition and mismatch ratio. The experimental result gave us 97.1% accuracy in book counting.
Background: The photolithography process in the semiconductor industry uses various chemicals with little information on their constitution. This study aimed to identify the chemical constituents of photoresist (PR) products and their by-products and to compare these constituents with material safety data sheets (MSDSs) and analytical results. Methods: A total of 51 PRs with 48 MSDSs were collected. Analysis consisted of two parts: First, the constituents of the chemical products were identified and analyzed using MSDS data; second, for verification of the by-products of PR, volatile organic compounds were analyzed. The chemical constituents were categorized according to hazards. Results: Forty-five of 48 products contained trade secrets in amounts ranging from 1 to 65%. A total of 238 ingredients with multiple counting (35 ingredients without multiple counting) were identified in the MSDS data, and 48.7% of ingredients were labeled as trade secrets under the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Act. The concordance rate between the MSDS data and the analytical result was 41.7%. The by-product analysis identified 129 chemicals classified according to Chemical Abstracts Service No., with 17 chemicals that are carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic substances. Formaldehyde was found to be released from 12 of 21 products that use novolak resin. Conclusion: We confirmed that several PRs contain carcinogens, and some were not specified in the toxicological information in the MSDS. Hazardous chemicals, including benzene and formaldehyde, are released from PRs products as by-products. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a systematic management system for chemical compounds and the working environment.
