In the aftermath of nation-wide controversy over "conservation vs. development" of the costal wetland in the Saemangeum, Korea could legislate the laws of wetland conservation and costal management in 1998. Since then, the public interest in the costal mudflats and its conservation has increased greatly, but the controversy on the economic value of mutflat wetland and the futher (un)necessity of reclamation) is not yet settled. In the cases of Korea dealt, economic valuation of wetland was performed mainly in the milieu of reclamation(development) vs conservation conflict, or from interest of recreational use. Korean studies used to estimate economic value of development case and conservation case respectively and then tried to compare these two value, as is sometimes done also in other countries. But the scrutiny of the results of these studies leads us to conclude that the revealed wide discrepancy among estimated values, above all other methodological problems, denies any practical applicability to the actual policy use. Benefit transfer as a convenient alternative method of valuation can not be usable either in our cases, because there is too few reliable estimated economic values of mudflat wetlands.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the classification and the spatial form of the named coastal landforms which are collected from the specialized magazine for fishing as a collective representative. The costal landform, viewing from the fishing activity, is divided into 9 types which are Yo(sunken rock), Kaeppai(rock-ribbed coast), Jolbyeok(cliff), Koppuri(spite), Chagalmadang(shringle beach), Kanchulam(intermitent rock), Mulgol(valley sea), Kaeppul(tidal flat), Sajang(sandy coast). And the characterstics of the 9types of landform were analyzed. The results of this study will contribute to establish teory on conservation and rehabilitation of costal landscape.
The flora and vegetation of salt marsh region in Nonhyun-dong, Incheon were investigated from June 1999 to June 2000. The surveyed region includes the several abandoned salt farms and natural salt marshes developing along the intertidal zone at the stream of the Sorae Inlet, Yellow Sea and is going to be constructed a costal ecopark. In this survey 14 species of halophytes were collected in the region, among them Suaeda maritima is the most common one, Salicornia herbacea, Artemisia scoparnia and Aster tripolium are also observed popularly. The flora of the abandoned salt farms is very similar to that of the natural salt marshes. However, the bank areas between the abandoned salt farms and the natural salt marshes showed more richness of species diversity including 21 naturalized plants. The vegetations on the natural salt marshes are mainly composed of Suaeda maritima -Artemisia scoparnia and Suaeda maritima communities. On the other hand, various plant communities were investigated in the abandoned salt farms such as Suaeda maritima-Salicornia herbacea, Phragmites communis-Typha angustata, Suaeda asparagoides -Suaeda maritima and Phragmites communis communities. Based on the plant physiognomy and species diversity, the region can be divided into three types of area for conservation, that is, the area composed of well-developed vegetation, disturbed one by human activities and plant withering area. Futhermore, according to the construction of the costal ecopark in the region the conservation scheme for each area was discssed.
The four specimens of Clariger cosmurus, belonging to the family gobiidae were collected from the southern costal region of Korea, and described as the first record from Korea. The specimens are characterized by having two dorsal fins, a few barbels below the eye, and dark brownish line along lateral body from tip of snout to caudal peduncle. We propose a new Korean name of the genus Clariger, C. cosmurus as respectively Wae-mang-duk sok and Wae-mang-duk, for the species.
We created species richness maps of mammals, birds and plants using "Nnational Ecosystem Survey" data and identified correlations between species richness maps of each taxa. We examine the distribution of species richness of each taxa and calculated conservation priority rank through plotting species-area curves using an additive benefit function in Zonation. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, plant showed high species richness in Gangwon province and Baekdudaegan, and mammals showed high species richness at eastern slope of Baekdudaegan in Gangwon province unusually and the species richness of mammals distributed equally except Gyeonggi and Chungnam province. However, birds showed high species richness in the west costal because the area is the major route of winter migratory birds. Second, correlation of each taxa's distribution is not significant. Correlation between mammals and birds is positive but correlations between birds and others are negative. Because mammals inhabit in forest but birds mostly live in coastal wetlands and rivers. Therefore, bird's habitats are not shared with other habitats. Third, the probability of mammals occurrence is very low under 25% in species-area curve, others increase proportionally to area. Birds increase dramatically richness at 10% because bird's habitat is concentrated in coastal wetlands and rivers. Plants increased gently species richness due to large forest in Gangwon province. We can calculate the predicted number of species in curves and plan various conservation strategies using the marginal number of species. Finally, high priority ranks for conservation distributed mainly in Gangwon province and Baekdudaegan. When we compared with priority map and terrestrial national parks, the parks were evaluated as high priority ranks. However, the rank of parks away from Baekdudaegan was low. This study has the meaning of selecting conservation priority area using National Ecosystem Survey. In spite of the omission of survey data in national parks and Baekdudaegan, the results were good. Therefore, the priority rank method using species distribution models is useful to selecting protected areas and improving conservation plans. However, it is needed to select protected areas considering various evaluation factors, such as rarity, connectivity, representativeness, focal species and so on because there is a limit to select protected area only using species richness.
Through the analyses of the distribution characteristics and management practices of the wildlife protection areas, this study intends to present basic data for improving the management of protected areas. 1) Based on the aggregate results of the protected areas, the average ratio of the metro-city and provincial areas to the designated protected areas was 1.49%; except for Chungcheongbuk-do (8.83%) and Gyeongsangnam-do (3.43%), most regions showed specified percentages of about 1%, whereby the analysis suggested that the designated protected areas were too small. 2) Considering the fact that most (86.16%) of the wildlife protection areas are in the regions that are of ecological nature level of grade 1, green nature level of grade 8 or better, and of legal conservation regions and districts, it was shown that these reserves are distributed in regions with excellent natural environmental conditions. 3) Designation of protected areas for the protection of wildlife and fish is deemed to be necessary. Although there are 588 wildlife & plant reserves, there are absolutely no designated areas for protecting plant and fish species. 4) Based on the results of an analysis of the current distribution by types, 92.47% of protected areas were concentrated in the mountains, 0.24% in the agricultural lands, and 7.29% distributed in the lakes/rivers/costal areas. 5) As major improvement projects, proposed were: advancement of management systems for protected areas, expanded designation of protected areas, overhaul of managed areas, designation of protected areas for the protection of wild plants and fish, need for management measures for private property and the surrounding areas, need to secure appropriate management personnel and collaboration, locally-adapted management, eco-information-based management, total management of protected areas, etc.
This study was conducted to provide basic data for the effective conservation and management in the black pine(Pinus thunbergii) stand which is located in the eastern coast of Gyeongsangbuk-do where the fragmentation of vegetation has been caused by the exploitation and the increase of tourists, and installed the seventy study sites($20{\times}20m$) in the dominant black pine stand. The black pine stand was classified into three groups(P. thunbergii - P. densiflora community, P. thunbergii - Robinia pseudoacacia community, P. thunbergii - P. densiflora-Celtis sinensis community) by a cluster analysis. As a result of Multi-Response Permutation Procedures test, there is significance among the communities. Pinus densiflora, Callicarpa japonica, Juniperus rigida, Rhododendron yedoense for. poukhanense etc. nineteen species were significant by indicator species analysis. The population structure of black pine stand showed that the class of diameter 12 to 26 cm was dominance, which had the inverse hump-shape pattern. Species diversity index(H') of investigated ranged from $1.033{\pm}0.234$ to $1.629{\pm}0.226$ in the woody layer group and from $2.448{\pm}0.457$ to $2.545{\pm}0.318$$2.174{\pm}0.333$ in the herb layer group.
Coastal sand dune systems are particularly fragile and threaten the environment. However, these systems provide fundamental ecosystem services to the nearby urban areas, acting, for example, as protective buffers against erosion. In this paper, we attempt to classify the biotope types of coastal sand dune ecosystems and select an index for the assessment of the conservation value. The types of biotopes are categorized based on the vegetation map; floras are examined in order to research the effects of hinterlands on coastal sand dunes. In addition, a naturalization rate and an urbanization index for each biotope type in hinterlands are analyzed. In the ecosystem of coastal sand dunes, the urbanization index and naturalization rate shows a higher value in sand dunes with areas of road, residential, and idle land in farm villages, rice fields, and fields. On the contrary, a lower value in the urbanization index and naturalization rate is present when typical biotope types, such as sand dune vegetation and natural Pinus thunbergii forests, are widely distributed. Based on these results, urbanization index and naturalization rate should be used as critical indices for the assessment of the ecosystem of costal sand dunes.
The flooding and overtopping due to unexpected large ocean wave may occur serious problems to environments and structures. Generally fixed wave breakers and several structures were installed to prevent such damages, however, they may affect to environments and charted path of ships badly. In this regard, new type of initial wave breaker was investigated in both of experimentally and numerically. For the experiments, conceptual devices were built by authors with stereo vision system. The moving particle semi-implicit method was adopted for simulation. It is revealed that the initial wave breaker reduce the damages from ocean waves by energy dissipated earlier. Furthermore, the effects of position of the initial wave breaker was also considered.

This study is based on deductions from analysis of historical changes in hydrographic surveys, the problems with the existing system in Korea and analysis of the literature, including foreign cases. Using these criteria, we created and administered a survey of marine professionals of Korea, and based on the results, established an order of priority for hydrographic surveys, as follows: changes in the seabed, quantities of marine traffic, existing performance data from hydrographic survey, consumer's demand, marine accidents, conservation of oceanic environment, and natural resources. The study also deduced, based on a survey of experts, the relative importance ranking of the major ports in South Korea and suggests policy implications and a priority decision model to conduct future hydrographic surveys in a more scientific and systematic way.
