Estimate of Additional Construction Cost as Certifying G-SEED of Office Building in Korea

  • To improve environmental problem as globally climate changes, domestic and foreign government have been trying to reduce green gas emitted by all industries. With making the green building certification system that assess the substantiality and energy performance of building, a governments have been using by a way for reducing green gas emitted in building industry. G-SEED(Green Standard for Energy & Environmental Design) developed in Korea have been reinforcing, and a number of projects certifying the G-SEED have been increasing continuously. As a demand of G-SEED certification is rising, a question on the additional cost data as certifying G-SEED is rising. It is because additional cost as getting the certification is important fact for G-SEED level decision and whether getting the certification or not. Therefore, this study analyzed additional construction cost as certifying G-SEED through performance improvement and design change of general office building not to get G-SEED. In conclusion, an additional construction cost ratio of G-SEED projects to the reference building is drawn as certified level; +0.26%, silver level; +2.29%, gold level; +3.89%, and platinum level; +5.48%.

Low-cost Impedance Technique for Structural Health Monitoring (임피던스 기반 저비용 구조물 건전성 모니터링 기법)

  • This paper presents a method for detecting damage to a structure at low cost using its impedance. The impedance technique is a typical method to detect local damage for structural health monitoring. This is a common technique for estimating damage by monitoring the electro-mechanical admittance signal of the structure. To apply this technique, an expensive impedance analyzer is generally used. On the other hand, it is necessary to develop a low-cost variant to effectively disseminate the technique. In this study, a method based on the transfer impedance using a function generator and digital multimeter, which are generally used in the laboratory instead of an impedance analyzer, was developed. That is, this technique estimates the damage by comparing the damage index using the amplitude ratio of the output voltage measured in the healthy and damaged state. A transfer impedance test was carried out on a steel specimen. By comparing the damage index, the presence of damage could be assessed reasonably. This study is a basic investigation of an impedance-based low-cost damage detection method that can be used effectively for structural health monitoring if supplemented with future research to estimate the damage location and severity.

Determinants of Productivity Change in Export Manufacturing Firms : Focusing on Innovation (수출제조기업의 생산성변화에 영향을 미치는 요인 분석 : 혁신활동을 중심으로)

  • This study aims to identify the sources of productivity change in export manufacturing firms. After estimating the Malmquist productivity index, a panel regression was used to calculate the source of productivity change. Upon conducting a literature review of this field, six variables were selected as explanatory variables. The results of an analysis of 355 export manufacturing firms operating from 2009 through 2015 are as follows: First, both innovation activity and total assets had a positive impact on productivity change. However, employment cost intensity, equity ratio, and current ratio had a negative impact on productivity change in export manufacturing firms. Second, innovation activity and intangible assets had a positive impact on productivity change, but employment cost intensity, selling expense intensity, and equity ratio had a negative impact on productivity change in large export manufacturing firms. Third, innovation activity had a positive impact on productivity change, but employment cost intensity and equity ratio had a negative impact on productivity change in small and medium export manufacturing firms. Fourth, intangible assets had a positive impact on productivity change, but employment cost intensity, selling expense intensity, and current ratio had a negative impact on productivity change in export manufacturing firms listed on the Korea Composite Stock Price Index. Fifth, innovation activity and total assets had a positive impact on productivity change, but employment cost intensity and equity ratio had a negative impact on productivity change in manufacturing firms listed on the Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations. The managerial implications of this study are also discussed.

Cost Normalization Framework for a Benchmarking System: A Case for Downstream and Chemical Construction Projects

  • Benchmarking is an important tool to assess the performance of capital projects in the construction industry. Incorporating cost-related metrics into a benchmarking system requires an effective cost normalization process to enable meaningful comparisons among projects that were executed at different locations and times. Projects in the downstream and chemicals sector have unique characteristics compared to other types of construction projects, they require a distinctive cost normalization framework to be developed to benchmark their absolute cost performance. The purpose of this study is to develop such a framework to be used for the case of benchmarking the downstream and chemical projects for their performance assessment. The research team started with a review of existing cost normalization methodologies adopted in benchmarking systems and conducted 7 interviews to identify the current cost normalization practices used by industrial professionals. A panel of 12 experts was then convened and it held 6 review sessions to accomplish the framework development. The cost normalization framework for benchmarking downstream and chemical projects was established as a three-step procedure and it adopts a 4-element cost breakdown structure to accommodate projects submitted by both owners and contractors. It also incorporated 5 published cost indexes that are compatible with downstream and chemical projects and they were embedded into 2 options to complete the normalization process. The framework was then pilot-tested on 4 completed projects to validate its functional practicality and the downstream and chemical use case in the benchmarking system.

Improvement in Computation of Δ V10 Flicker Severity Index Using Intelligent Methods

  • The ${\Delta}\;V_{10}$ or 10-Hz flicker index, as a common method of measurement of voltage flicker severity in power systems, requires a high computational cost and a large amount of memory. In this paper, for measuring the ${\Delta}\;V_{10}$ index, a new method based on the Adaline (adaptive linear neuron) system, the FFT (fast Fourier transform), and the PSO (particle swarm optimization) algorithm is proposed. In this method, for reducing the sampling frequency, calculations are carried out on the envelope of a power system voltage that contains a flicker component. Extracting the envelope of the voltage is implemented by the Adaline system. In addition, in order to increase the accuracy in computing the flicker components, the PSO algorithm is used for reducing the spectral leakage error in the FFT calculations. Therefore, the proposed method has a lower computational cost in FFT computation due to the use of a smaller sampling window. It also requires less memory since it uses the envelope of the power system voltage. Moreover, it shows more accuracy because the PSO algorithm is used in the determination of the flicker frequency and the corresponding amplitude. The sensitivity of the proposed method with respect to the main frequency drift is very low. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by simulations. The validity of the simulations is proven by the implementation of the algorithm with an ARM microcontroller-based digital system. Finally, its function is evaluated with real-time measurements.

Physical Database Design for DFT-Based Multidimensional Indexes in Time-Series Databases (시계열 데이터베이스에서 DFT-기반 다차원 인덱스를 위한 물리적 데이터베이스 설계)

  • Sequence matching in time-series databases is an operation that finds the data sequences whose changing patterns are similar to that of a query sequence. Typically, sequence matching hires a multi-dimensional index for its efficient processing. In order to alleviate the dimensionality curse problem of the multi-dimensional index in high-dimensional cases, the previous methods for sequence matching apply the Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT) to data sequences, and take only the first two or three DFT coefficients as organizing attributes of the multi-dimensional index. This paper first points out the problems in such simple methods taking the firs two or three coefficients, and proposes a novel solution to construct the optimal multi -dimensional index. The proposed method analyzes the characteristics of a target database, and identifies the organizing attributes having the best discrimination power based on the analysis. It also determines the optimal number of organizing attributes for efficient sequence matching by using a cost model. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we perform a series of experiments. The results show that the Proposed method outperforms the previous ones significantly.

Application of CBD Zinc Sulfide (ZnS) Film to Low Cost Antireflection Coating on Large Area Industrial Silicon Solar Cell

  • Zinc sulfide is a semiconductor with wide band gap and high refractive index and hence promising material to be used as ARC on commercial silicon solar cells. Uniform deposition of zinc sulfide (ZnS) by using chemical bath deposition (CBD) method over a large area of silicon surface is an emerging field of research because ZnS film can be used as a low cost antireflection coating (ARC). The main problem of the CBD bath process is the huge amount of precipitation that occurs during heterogeneous reaction leading to hamper the rate of deposition as well as uniformity and chemical stoichiometry of deposited film. Molar concentration of thiorea plays an important role in varying the percentage of reflectance and refractive index of as-deposited CBD ZnS film. Desirable rate of film deposition (19.6 ${\AA}$ / min), film uniformity (Std. dev. < 1.8), high value of refractive index (2.35), low reflectance (0.655) have been achieved with proper optimization of ZnS bath. Decrease in refractive index of CBD ZnS film due to high temperature treatment in air ambiance has been pointed out in this paper. Solar cells of conversion efficiency 13.8 % have been successfully achieved with a large area (103 mm ${\times}$ 103 mm) mono-crystalline silicon wafers by using CBD ZnS antireflection coating in this modified approach.

Estimation of a Level of Service and Cost of Service Function for Road Pavements for Performance Management in the Public Sector (공공부문 성과관리를 위한 도로포장의 서비스수준과 서비스비용 함수 추정)

  • PURPOSES : This study aimed to evaluate the performance of pavement management works and to develop a function for estimating the level of service (LOS) and cost of service (COS) for the systematic and quantitative management of pavement performance in the public sector. METHODS : The International Roughness Index (IRI) was used as the performance index for pavement management. Long-term pavement performance data for a period of 7 years (2007-2014) collected by the National Highway Pavement Management System and historical maintenance budget data published by the South Korean government were used to develop the LOS-COS function. Based on the function, a model for estimating the appropriate budget as well as the network conditions was suggested. RESULTS : There was high degree of correlation between pavement performance and the investment level (R = - 0.74). The developed LOS-COS function suggested that the unit cost to improve the network IRI to 1 m/km was 32.6 billion KRW. Further, the maintenance costs normalized with respect to the LOS levels were LOS-A = 88.2 billion KRW, LOS-B = 55.6 billion KRW, and LOS-C = 23.0 billion KRW. CONCLUSIONS : This study proposes a simple way of developing a LOS-COS function. It also shows how to develop a network budget demand and condition estimation model using the LOS-COS function. In addition, it is the first attempt to evaluate the road maintenance budget in South Korea. It is expected that these results will help in the negotiations between the road managers and budget makers.

A Models of Economic Analysis in Safety Diagnosis for Remodeling Strategies of Apartment Housing (공동주택의 리모델링 전략을 위한 안전진단의 경제성분석 모델)

  • The importance of the life cycle cost analysis(LCCA) for apartment housing remodeling projects has been fully recognized over the last decade. Accordingly theoretical models, guidelines, and supporting software systems were developed for the life cycle cost analysis of apartment housing remodeling systems. However, the level of consensus on LCCA results is still low due to the lack of reliable data on remodeling activities for safety diagnosis. in order to predict the reliability based LCCA of the given case, suggested the remodeling strategies level after reviewing other related materials. Apply the real information of the economic index. And based on such analytical measures, remodeling and operation cost and LCC in remodeling strategies level have been predicted; suggests the basic information about remodeling interventions level for the apartment housing. The LCC analysis models and the fuzzy logic based safety assessment presented in this study can greatly contribute to the value-oriented design alternative selection, estimation of the economic analysis, and the allocation of budget for apartm.

Factors Affecting Productivity for University Food Service Operations (대학급식소의 생산성 요인분석)

  • The objectives of this study were to analyze the factors that affect the productivity for university food services. In a survey involving four-year university dining centers throughout the country, and correlations among thriteen different variables that affect productivity were determined. Productivity index (PI) was determined by meals per hour, the average score for 38 institutions was found to be 14.2 meals/hour. For serving methods, the fixed ration had a higher PI than the self-serving. When two types of serving trays were considered, the PI of the compartmantalized trays was higher than that of the tray accompanying saparate small dishes. When single (S)-or. multiple(M)-menu was compared with the cafeteria style, a higher PI was obtained by the S-or M-menu. Among the three operation systems, the PI was found to be the highest by direct operation (17.6 meals/hour), followed by contract operation (11.1 meals/hour) and rent operation (7.9 meals/hour). For the factors that affect the productivity of the university food services, the total number sewed (r=0.54, p<0.001) and the use of convenient food items (r=0.28, P<0.05) exhibited positive correlations, while food costs and labor costs showed negative correlations. This suggests that the productivity of university food service increases as the total number served and the use of convenient food item increased, but decreases as the food costs and labor costs per meal increased. A regression analysis showed that three variables - total number sewed, labor cost per meal, number of employees-influenced about 73% components of food service showed a negative correlation with PI and a positive correlation with the labor cost per meal.
