Cellular and corrugated cross-sectioned thin-walled steel bridge-piers/columns

  • Thin walled steel bridge-piers/columns are vulnerable to damage, when subjected to earthquake excitations. Local buckling, global buckling or interaction between local and global buckling usually is the cause of this damage, which results in significant strength reduction of the member. In this study new innovative design concepts, "thin-walled corrugated steel columns" and "thin-walled cellular steel columns" are presented, which allow the column to undergo large plastic deformations without significant strength reduction; hence dissipate energy under cyclic loading. It is shown that, compared with the conventional designs, circular and stiffened box sections, these new innovative concepts might results in cost-effective designs, with improved buckling and ductility properties. Using a finite element model, that takes the non-linear material properties into consideration, it is shown that the corrugations will act like longitudinal stiffeners that are supporting each other, thus improving the buckling behavior and allowing for reduction of the overall wall thickness of the column.

사인파형 웨브주름 보강재를 이용한 저층건물의 내진보강에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Seismic Reinforcement of a Low-Rise Building Using Sinusoidal Corrugated Web Members)

  • In this study, a general low-rise building was selected to compare the new shear wall reinforcement method, which is a general method among the existing reinforcement methods, and the reinforcement method using sinusoidal corrugated web reinforcement. And it was confirmed that the following effects can be expected. Sinusoidal corrugated web members can be carried out in a short period of time as it does not require the removal of the masonry filling wall, the reinforcement of reinforcing bars, and the curing period of the concrete. It is effective in preventing damage that may occur when masonry filling wall is overturned in the out-of-plane direction, and the burden of the foundation is also reduced, and thus the construction period and cost required for reinforcement can greatly be reduced. By adjusting the number of sinusoidal corrugated web member, details of joints, and reinforcement positions, the flow of load can be induced to have an advantageous effect on the building. It can be considered as the most suitable reinforcement plan in terms of life safety. Unlike the shear wall that fills between the columns, the sinusoidal corrugated web members, which has a width of 1.5m, can install openings between two columns depending on the purpose of use, and can be expected to have a great effect in terms of usability due to its free installation location. As mentioned above, the seismic reinforcement using a sinusoidal corrugated web members, can expect great effect compared to conventional reinforcement methods in terms of usability, economic feasibility, and stability.

Stability analyses of a cylindrical steel silo with corrugated sheets and columns

  • The paper presents comprehensive quasi-static stability analysis results for a real funnel-flow cylindrical steel silo composed of horizontally corrugated sheets strengthened by vertical thin-walled column profiles. Linear buckling and non-linear analyses with geometric and material non-linearity were carried out with a perfect and an imperfect silo by taking into account axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric loads imposed by a bulk solid following Eurocode 1. Finite element simulations were carried out with 3 different numerical models (single column on the elastic foundation, 3D silo model with the equivalent orthotropic shell and full 3D silo model with shell elements). Initial imperfections in the form of a first eigen-mode for different wall loads and from 'in-situ' measurements with horizontal different amplitudes were taken into account. The results were compared with Eurocode 3. Some recommendations for the silo dimensioning were elaborated.

  • In designing a 300 meter high skyscraper expected to be the tallest building in Japan, an earthquake-ridden country, we launched on the full-scale performance based design to ensure redundancy and establish new specifications using below new techniques. The following new techniques are applied because the existing techniques/materials are not enough to meet the established design criteria for the large-scale, irregularly-shaped building, and earth-conscious material saving and construction streamlining for reconstructing a station building are also required: ${\bullet}$ High strength materials: Concrete filled steel tube ("CFT") columns made of high-strength concrete and steels; ${\bullet}$ New joint system: Combination of outer diaphragm and aluminium spray jointing; ${\bullet}$ Various dampers including corrugated steel-plate walls, rotational friction dampers, oil dampers, and inverted-pendulum adaptive tuned mass damper (ATMD): Installed as appropriate; and ${\bullet}$ Foundation system: Piled raft foundation, soil cement earth-retaining wall construction, and beer bottle shaped high-strength CFT piles.

중수증류공정의 정상 및 비정상상태 거동해석 (Analysis of Steady and Unsteady State Behavior in Behavior Water Distillation Process)

  • 새로이 개발된 망상구조 충전탑에서의 중수증류성능해석 및 설계를 위한 정상 및 비정상상태 모델을 수립하였다. 정상상태 모델은 MESH 방정식에 각단의 압력강하를 고려하여 설정하고, Equation Tearing방법으로 그 해를 구하여 중수중류탄내의 농도, 온도 및 압력구배를 얻었다. 비정상상태 거동해석을 위하여 Cohen의 이상단 모델을 수정한 평형단 전이모델을 세웠으며, 그 모델식의 해석적 해를 구함으로써 시간에 따른 중수 농축과정을 예측할 수 있게 되었다. 설정된 모델들은 전환류 중수증류탑에서의 실험결과와 매우 잘 일치하였으며 개발된 충전물임이 높은 이론단수에 낮은 압력강하, 저체류량을 갖는 우수한 중수농축용 충전물임이 확인되었다.
