  • Corrsion fatigue test was performed under rotated bending in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution having a temperature from 278.deg.K in order to investigate the effects of aqueous solution remperature on the corrosion fatigue fracture of raw material steel(SS41) and dual phase steel that was produced from SS41 by a series of heat treatment. Corrosion fatigue life decreases remarkably with increase in solution temperature or with decrease in stress level. The corrosion fatigue life and the crack propagation rate at 303.deg.K show the similar behaviors with those at 318.deg.K, which is assumed to be caused by concentration polarization phenamena. The number and the lengths of microcracks increase with increase in solution temperature, so they lead to the decrease in corrosion fatigue life.

  • Effects of corrosion inhibitors (i.e., sodium nitrite, sodium hexametaphosphate, trimethylamine (TEA), sugar, and urea) on the corrosion resistance of carbon steel in CaCl2 solution were investigated. The test solution was designed with response surface methodology of design of experiments (DOE) in the range of 0 ~ 50 ppm for NaNO2, 0 ~ 200 ppm for (NaPO3)6, 0 ~ 2000 ppm for TEA, 0 ~ 3000 ppm for sugar, 0 ~ 200 ppm for urea with 3 wt% CaCl2. The corrosion potential and the corrosion rate were measured with potentiodynamic polarization tests and analyzed statistically to find main effects of inhibitor concentrations and interactions between them. As a result, hexametaphosphate was the most effective compound in reducing the corrosion rate. Sugar also reduced the corrosion rate significantly possibly because it covered the surface effectively with a high molecular weight. The inhibiting action of sugar was found to be enhanced by adding trimethylamine into the solution. Nevertheless, trimethylamine did not appear to be effective in inhibiting corrosion by itself. However, urea and sodium nitrite showed almost no inhibition on corrosion resistance of steel.

  • Effect of boron on corrosion resistance of Type 304 stainless steel has been studied. Boron tends to segregate at the grain boundaries during cooling after solution treatment, and so boron treated steel usually exhibits a ditch structure under the 10% oxalic acid test. However, it was found that the addition of 25 ppm boron in Type 304 steel has no effect on the general and pitting corrosion resistance while it has a little effect on the intergranular corrosion resistance.

  • Cavitation corrosion in many industrial plants has recently become a serious issue. Cavitation corrosion has generally been investigated using a vibratory method based on ASTM G32 standard, and the test can be divided into direct cavitation and indirect cavitation. Cavitation corrosion test uses the vibration frequency of the horn of 20 kHz with constant peak-to-peak displacement amplitude. In this work, the peak-to-peak amplitude was controlled from 15 ㎛ to 85 ㎛, and electrochemical measurements were obtained during indirect cavitation. The relationship between cavitation corrosion rate and electrochemical properties was discussed. Corrosion steps of carbon steel at the initial stage under cavitation condition in 3.5 % NaCl can be proposed. When the cavitation strength is relatively low, corrosion of the steel is more affected by the electrochemical process than by the mechanical process; but when the cavitation strength is relatively high, corrosion of the steel is affected more by the mechanical process than by the electrochemical process. This work confirmed that the critical ultrasonic amplitude of 0.42 %C carbon steel is 53.8 ㎛, and when the amplitude is less than 53.8 ㎛, the corrosion effect during the cavitation corrosion process is higher than the mechanical effect.

  • Artificial cracks were made in the cover concrete of specimens embedding ten types of steel rebars of different Cr contents. The research aims for developing Cr-bearing steel rebars resistant to macrocell corrosion environments induced by cracking in cover concrete. The cracks were subjected to intensive penetration of carbon dioxide (carbonation specimens) to form macrocells. The carbonation specimens were then treated with accelerated corrosion curing, during which current macrocell corrosion density was measured. The corrosion area and loss from corrosion were also measured at the end of 105 cycles of this accelerated curing. The results of the study showed that Cr-bearing steel with Cr content of 5% or more suppressed corrosion in a macrocell corrosion environment induced by the differences in the pH values due to carbonation of cracked parts. Cr-bearing steels with Cr content of 7% or more are proven to possess excellent corrosion resistance.

  • The corrosion protection methods of reinforcing steel in concrete are the various methods such as increasing thickness of cover concrete, using of reinforcing bars coated with epoxy, dosage of corrosion inhibitor as concrete admixture, cathodic protection method and etc. The most economical method of them will be the corrosion protection method using corrosion inhibitor as concrete admixture. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate the performance of corrosion protection of ordinary strength and high strength concrete using corrosion inhibitor, respectively. For this purpose, after manufacturing ordinary strength and high strength concrete with and without corrosion inhibitor, the accelerated corrosion tests for reinforcing steel were conducted according to the periodic cycles (140 day) of wetting ($65^{\circ}C$, 90% R.H.) and drying period ($15^{\circ}C$, 65% R.H.). As a result, th high strength concrete using corrosion inhibitor showed an excellent performance of corrosion protection.

  • Deteriorative effects of steel corrosion on the structural response of reinforced concrete are simulated for varying degrees of corrosion. The simulation approach is based on a three-dimensional irregular lattice model of the bulk concrete, in which fracture is modeled using a crack band approach that conserves fracture energy. Frame elements and bond link elements represent the reinforcing steel and its interface with the concrete, respectively. Polylinear stress-slip properties of the link elements are determined, for several degrees of corrosion, through comparisons with direct pullout tests reported in the literature. The link properties are then used for the lattice modeling of reinforced concrete beams with similar degrees of corrosion of the main reinforcing steel. The model is successful in simulating several important effects of steel corrosion, including increased deflections, changes in flexural cracking behavior, and reduced yield load of the beam specimens.

  • Phosphate based inhibitor is playing a decisive role in inhibiting the corrosion of steel rebar in chloride condition. We have used different amount of ammonium phosphate monobasic (APMB) as corrosion inhibitor in mortar with different amount of chloride ions. The compressive strength, flexural strength, open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization resistance (PPR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy were performed to access the effect of inhibitor on corrosion resistance. As the amount of inhibitor is increased, the compressive strength increased. The electrochemical results show that as the amount of inhibitor and chloride ions are increased, the total impedance and corrosion resistance of steel rebar increased attributed to the formation of the stable oxide films onto the steel rebar surface. It is suggested that APMB can work in high concentration of chloride ions present in concrete where phosphate ion helps in formation of stable and protective phosphate based oxide film.

  • During the operation, maintenance and decommissioning of nuclear power plant radioactive contaminated waste is produced. This waste is stored in an underground repository 60-100 meters below the surface. The metallic portion of this waste comprises mostly carbon and stainless steel. A long-term field exposure showed high corrosion rates, general corrosion up to 29 ㎛ a-1 and localized corrosion even higher. High corrosion rate is possible if microbes produce corrosive products, or alter the local microenvironment to favor corrosion. The bacterial and archaeal composition of biofilm formed on the surface of carbon steel was studied using 16S rRNA gene targeting sequencing, followed by phylogenetic analyses of the microbial community. The functional potential of the microbial communities in biofilm was studied by functional gene targeting quantitative PCR. The corrosion rate was calculated from weight loss measurements and the deposits on the surfaces were analyzed with SEM/EDS and XRD. Our results demonstrate that microbial diversity on the surface of carbon steel and their functionality is vast. Our results suggest that in these nutrient poor conditions the role of methanogenic archaea in corrosive biofilm, in addition to sulphate reducing bacteria, could be greater than previously suspected.

  • Feasibility of using PE sheet laminated CSP(Corrugated steel pipe) to sewers were tested via corrosion and abrasion tests for PE sheet laminated CSP; 1) corrosion test for PE film and PE coated plate, 2) corrosion test for joint of PE sheet laminated CSP, 3) corrosion test for outside of PE sheet laminated CSP, and 4) abrasion test for inside of PE sheet laminated CSP. The results for the corrosion and abrasion tests are as follows. 1. Results for corrosion tests on PE films and zinc coated steel plates that were coated with PE films show that the surfaces of both PE were not changed compared to those of original PE samples. Furthermore, PE films maintained strong adhesion on the steel plates even though they were exposed to sewage and seawater provided cutting planes of the steel plates were treated with molding. But, results for corrosion tests on the spots that were previously cut off by a knife and a cutting planes of the steel plates were treated without molding show that steel plates have been corroded if they were exposed to sewage and seawater. 2. Results for corrosion tests on joints of PE sheet laminated corrugated steel using sewage show that gathering rust was observed at cutting plane of PE sheet laminated corrugated steel after 180 days, but PE film was not flaked off. However, PE film at cutting plane was flaked off when PE sheet laminated corrugated steel was exposed to seawater. Furthermore, flaking process was severely progressed at lockseam points of which the surfaces were not smooth. 3. Results for laying PE sheet laminated corrugated steel under the ground show that the surface of untouched PE film was almost identical to that of original PE film. However, the spots that were previously cut off by a knife and a cutting plane of PE sheet laminated corrugated steel have flaked off. 4. As a result of abrasion tests conducted with PE sheet laminated corrugated steel and sand, brilliance and thickness of PE was not greatly changed under the severe abrasion conditions. Therefore, the durability of PE sheet laminated corrugated steel for abrasion was determined to be good.
