In this paper, evaluation and development of corrosion resistant materials for smokestacks is summarized mainly on the basis of the author's experimental results. Operating environments of smokestacks and the problems of conventional lining materials for smokestacks are described briefly. The emphasis is focused upon the evaluation and development of recently developed corrosion resistant steels such as YUS260 for heavy oil fired smokestacks, WELACC5 for LNG fired smokestacks and NSL310MoCu Clad steel for coal fired smokestacks. Corrosion resistance of these steels under laboratory corrosion testing environments and actual environments are evaluated. Finally future problems of corrosion resistant materials for smokestacks are touched on briefly.

The strength evaluation and life prediction on the corrosion part of structure is one of the most important subjects, as a viewpoint of reducing economic loss by regular inspection, maintenance, repair and replace. For this purpose, it has been difficult to obtain the available data on growth of pit depth or growth rate of each pit which depends on time. In this paper, the life prediction and strength evaluation method was suggested for the structure with irregular stress concentration part by surface corrosion. The statistical distribution pattern of corrosion depth and the degree of fatigue strength decline were confirmed according to corrosion period by artificial corrosion of SS41 steel. The life prediction and the fatigue strength evaluation of materials with consideration of the corrosion period on the extreme value statistic analysis by the data of maximum depth of corrosion and on random variable was studied.

Al is a active metal that owes its resistance to a thin, protective, barrier oxide surface layer, which is stable in air and neutral aqueous solution. Thus Al alloys are widely used in architectural trim. cold & hot-water storage vessels and piping. However Al and most of its alloy may corrode with some forms such as pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion and galvanic corrosion in the case of exposure to various industrial and marine atmosphere. Therefore a correct evaluation of corrosion resistance for their Al and Al alloys may be more important in a economical point of view. In this study. a relative evaluation of corrosion resistance for three kinds of Al alloys such as ALDC2, ALDC3, and ALDC8 series was carried out with electrochemical method. There is a tendency that corrosion potential is shifted to positive or negative direction by alloying components regardless of corrosion resistance. Moreover the data of corrosion properties obtained from cathodic Polarization curve, cyclic voltammogram and AC. DC impedance respectively showed a good correspondence each other against the corrosion resistance but variation of corrosion potential. passivity current density of anodic polarization curve and corrosion current density by Tafel extrapolation and Stern-Geary method didn't correspond with not only each other but also considerably the data of corrosion properties discussed above. Therefore it is suggested that an optimum electrochemical evaluation for corrosion resistance of Al alloy is to calculate the diffusion limiting current density of cathodic polarization curve, impedance of AC or DC and polarization resistance of cyclic voltammogram.

Since the degradation caused by corrosion is restricted to the surface of materials, conventional ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation methods based on ultrasonic bulk waves are not applicable to characterization of the corrosion degradation. To take care of this difficulty, a new nondestructive evaluation method that uses ultrasonic backward radiation has been proposed recently. This paper explores the potential of this newly developed method for nondestructive characterization and in-situ monitoring of corrosion degradation. Specifically, backward radiated ultrasounds from aged thermo-mechanically controlled process (TMCP) steel specimens by corrosion fatigue were measured and their characteristics were correlated to those of the aged specimens. The excellent correlation observed in the present study demonstrates the high potential of the backward radiated ultrasound as an effective tool for nondestructive characterization of corrosion degradation. In addition, the potential of the backward radiated ultrasound to in-situ monitoring of corrosion degradation is under current investigation.

An experimental study to evaluate corrosion protection systems was undertaken with 47 reinforced concrete slab specimens subjected to cyclic wet and dry saltwater exposure. Corrosion measurements included monitoring marcrocell corrosion currents, which are generally accepted in United States practice. Test results indicate that specimens containing 2 kg/$\textrm{m}^3$ of NaCl an exposed to a 10 percent of NaCl show high values of corrosion currents. For the specimens with water repellent membrane currents kept relatively low numerical values, while test specimens with surface corrosion inhibitor hyprotective systems show high values of corrosion currents. No clear indication of the corrosion inhibitor protective systems might be due to the extremely high chloride exposure of the specimens, which has brought the accelerated corrosion. It would be expected that evaluation of the corrosion protective systems need long-term measurement with specimen exposed les chloride but simulating the real condition.

An experimental study to evaluate to evaluate corrosion protection systems was undertaken with 44 reinforced concrete slab specimens subjected to cyclic wet and dry saltwater exposure. Corrosion measurements included monitoring macrocell corrosion currents, which are genrerally accecpted in United States practice. Test results indicate that specimens containing 2 kg/$\textrm{m}^3$ of NaCl and exposed to wet(outdoor) and dry(indoor) conditions but not to saltwater show very low values of corrosion measurements regardless applying any corrosion protective systems. Corrosion currents of the specimens exposed at 10 percent of NaCl were higher than that of the specimen exposed at 5 percent of NaCl, so the density of the salt water had an influential effect on the test. For the specimens with water repellent membrane currents kept relatively low numerical values, but test specimens with surface corrosion inhibitor protective system showed high values of corrosion current. It would be expected that evaluation of the corrosion protective systems need long-term measurement.

An electrochemical evaluation on the corrosion resistance for heavy anticorrosive paint(DFT:25um) was carried out for 5 kinds of heavy anticorrosive paints such as high solid epoxy(HE), solvent free epoxy(SE). tar epoxy(TE), phenol epoxy(PE). and ceramic epoxy(CE). Corrosion current densities obtained by Tafel extrapolation method from anodic and cathodic polarization curves didn't correspond with the values obtained by AC impedance measurement, however, the values of polarization resistance obtained from the cyclic voltammogram showed a good tendency corresponding well with the values of AC impedance measurement. Futhermore there was a good correlation against the corrosion resistance evaluation between passivity current density of the anodic polarization curve and diffusion limiting current density of the cathodic polarization curve. And corrosion resistance increased with corrosion potential shifting to noble direction. From the results discussed above. HE and CE had a relatively good corrosion resistance than other heavy anticorrosive paints.

This study aims to evaluate the corrosion behavior of a newly developed high-strength steel in marine environments. Metals used in seawater are easily deteriorated because of the presence of corrosive species such as chloride ions in it. Seawater causes much higher corrosion than fresh water. Thus, the corrosion of steel in marine environment has been recognized as a crucial problem in designing structures which cannot be cathodically protected. In this study, the corrosion resistance of a newly developed high-strength steel was evaluated. Four different specimens were tested to confirm the corrosion resistance. The exposure corrosion test was carried out by exposing the specimens to different marine environments such as atmospheric, tidal, splash, and submerged zones for two years. The specimens taken out from each location were cleaned ultrasonically and chemically prior to the evaluation of their corrosion resistance by the weight loss method. Finally, the pitting depth of the specimens was also measured to evaluate their pitting corrosion. The conditions used for the corrosion test were similar to the environmental conditions. The corrosion test results revealed that the corrosion rate and pitting corrosion of the newly developed high-strength steel was lower than that of the other carbon steels.

Cold arc welding of cast iron has been widely used with repair welding of metal structures. However its welding is often resulted in the galvanic corrosion between weld metal zone and heat affected zone(HAZ) due to increasing of hardness. In this study, corrosion properties such as hardness, corrosion potential, surface microstructures, and variation of corrosion current density of welding zone with parameters of used electrodes for cast iron welding were investigated with an electrochemical evaluation. Hardness of HAZ showed the highest value compared to other welding zone regardless of kinds of used electrodes for cast iron welding. And its corrosion potential was also shifted to more negative direction than other welding zone. In addition, corrosion current density of WM in polarization curves was qualitatively smaller than that of HAZ. Therefore galvanic corrosion may be apparently observed at HAZ. However galvanic corrosion may be somewhat controlled by using an optimum welding electrode.

This paper presents an experimental study on evaluation of structural performance on corroded reinforced concrete columns under only axial load, combined axial load and lateral load. This test was carried on the twenty-six reinforced concrete columns with $150\times150\times800$mm size subjected to combined axial load and lateral load. Effects of key variables such as the corrosion level, the number of hoop, the corrosion of hoop are studied in this program. The results of this study show that the capacity of column axial force was decreased as corrosion level was increased, especially, rapid development was shown after 10% corrosion level and the maximum moment capacity of column was shown at corrosion level 1.2%, while rapid decrease was shown after 4.3% corrosion level. Also we found that influence of corrosion was decreased to number of tie bar was increased.
