Evaluation of Deterioration of Epoxy Primer for Steel Bridge Coating using Image Processing and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (화상처리 기법과 전기화학적 임피던스 분광법을 이용한 강교 도장용 에폭시 하도 도료의 열화 평가)

  • In this study, both evaluations by visual imaging for exterior view of coating and by EIS were executed for epoxy primer coated specimens deteriorated by accelerated test, and comparison and analysis were carried out for 2 evaluation methods. In the comparison between total damaged area ratio acquired by image processing method and deterioration point, higher deterioration points were appeared for rusted specimens than for non-rusted specimens. It is attributed that deterioration point per unit area ratio given for rust is higher than for peeling. In the comparison between total damaged area ratio and EIS result, impedance of coating was largely decreased as about TEX>$10^4{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ or less when rust area ratio is more than about 0.1%, and blistering area ratio is more than about 3%. Charge transfer resistance ($R_{ct}$) and double layer capacitance ($C_{dl}$) values were appeared for all specimens except 2 ones, which shows that water is accumulated and steel substrate is corroded at coated film-steel interface. In the comparison between deterioration point and EIS result, more than 10 points as deterioration point were given for specimens of below $10^6{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ of impedance at low frequency. For specimens deteriorated by NORSOK cyclic test, impedance was lowest of all, though deterioration point was not high. It is thought to be attributed that coating system and accelerated deterioration condition of cyclic tested specimens were different from those of main specimens. From the result, it is thought that coating resistance can be relatively more decreased than deterioration degree estimated from exterior view under more severe corrosion environment or in the present of more complex deterioration factors.

Metal Corrosion Mechanism by Sulfate-reducing and Iron-oxidizing Bacteria in Saline System and its Optimal Inactivation (염수계 철산화균 및 황환원균에 의한 금속 부식 및 최적 제어 방안)

  • Due to economic impairment derived from metal corrosion of pumping station installed around coastal area, it was needed for related cause-effect to be investigated for understanding practical corrosion behavior and providing proper control. This research was thus carried out to determine whether the microbe can influence on metal corrosion along with its control in the laboratory. For this study, groundwater was sampled from the underground pump station(i.e. I Gas Station) where corrosion was observed. Microbial diversity on the samples were then obtained by 16S rDNA methods. From this, microbial populations showing corrosion behaviors against metals were reported as Leptothrix sp.(Iron oxidizing) and Desulfovibrio sp.(Sulfur reducing) Iron oxidizing bacteria were dominantly participating in the corrosion of iron, while sulfate reducing bacteria were more preferably producing precipitate of iron. In case of galvanized steel and stainless steel, iron oxidizing bacteria not only enhanced the corrosion, but also generated its scale of precipitate. Sulfate reducing bacteria had zinc steel corroded greater extent than that of iron oxidizing bacteria. In the inactivation test, chlorine or UV exposure could efficiently control bacterial growth. However as the inactivation intensity being increased beyond a threshold level, corrosion rate was unlikely escalated due to augmented chemical effect. It is decided that microbial corrosion could be differently taken place depending upon type of microbes or materials, although they were highly correlated. It could be efficiently retarded by given disinfection practices.

  • The combustion chamber of a diesel engine is often exposed to a more serious wear and corrosion environment than other parts of the engine because its temperature increases as a result of using heavy oil of low quality. Therefore, repair and built-up welding methods must be performed on worn or corroded parts of the piston crown, exhaust valve, etc. from an economical point of view. In this study, Inconel 718 filler metal was used in repair welding on the groove of a forged steel specimen for a piston crown, along with built-up welding on the surface of another forged steel specimen. Then, the corrosion characteristics of the weld metal zone for the repair welding and the deposited metal zone for the built-up welding were investigated using electrochemical methods in a 35% H2SO4 solution. The deposited metal zone indicated better corrosion resistance than the weld metal zone, showing a nobler corrosion potential, higher impedance, and smaller corrosion current density. It is considered that metal elements with good corrosion resistance were generally included in the filler metal, and these elements were also greatly involved in the deposited meta by built-up welding, whereas the weld metal consisted of metal elements mixed with both the filler metal and base metal elements because of the molten pool produced by the repair welding. Finally, it is considered that the hardness of the weld metal was increased by the repair welding, whereas the built-up welding improved the corrosion resistance of the deposited metal.

  • Stainless steel was applied as bipolar plate (BP) of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) due to high mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, and good machinability. However, stainless steel was corroded and increased contact resistance resulting PEMFC performance decrease. Although the corrosion resistance could be improved by surface treatment such as noble metal coating, there is a disadvantage of cost increase. The stainless steel corrosion behavior and passive layer influence on PEMFC performance should be studied to improve durability and economics of metal bipolar plate. In this study, SUS316L bipolar plate of 25 cm2 active area was manufactured, and experiments were conducted for corrosion behavior at an anode and cathode. The influence of SUS316L BP corrosion on fuel cell performance was measured using the polarization curve, impedance, and contact resistance. The metal ion concentration in drained water was analyzed during fuel cell operation with SUS316L BP. It was confirmed that the corrosion occurs more severely at the anode than at the cathode for SUS316L BP. The contact resistance was increased due to the passivation of SUS316L during fuel cell operation, and metal ions continuously dissolved even after the passive layer formation.

EVA Sheet and Butyl Rubber based Waterproofing·Anti-Corrosion Sheet for Corrosion Maintenance and Repairing in the Interior Side of the Large Steel Pipes in Water Treatment Facilities (상수도용 대구경 녹 발생 강관 내부의 보수 및 성능 유지를 위한 EVA 시트와 부틸고무를 합지한 자착식 방수방식 시트의 부착성능 평가)

  • This study discusses the applicability of environmental friendly EVA based butyl rubber self-adhesive waterproof sheet designed to prevent corrosion of large scale pipes used in the water treatment facilities during th water treatment process. The experiments conducted tested the waterproofing sheet's adhesion strength on the steel surface of the pipes and checked for whether the material has the proper response properties against the various environmental conditions. In addition, it the sheet adhered to the steel pipe was to see if the adhesion hold against the water pressure due to the ingress of inflow water. Finally, the waterproofing sheet's adhesion strength was tested on a rusted steel surface to confirm whether the material has the necessary properties to secure stable adhesion strength and prevent corrosion of steel pipes at the same time during the process of installation or maintenance. As a result, the self-adhesive waterproof sheets showed that all attachments in the untreated, long term pressuring, immersion in chemical substance (hydrochloric acid, hypochlorous acid, sodium hydroxide), low temperature ($-20^{\circ}C$) conditions showed a adhesion performance of higher than 1.5N/mm, which is the performance standard of KS F 4934. Also, in the testing to check for the adhesion property against inverse water pressure, it was observed that the adhesion failure did not occur even up to $3.0N/mm^2$ pressure. Also, in the process of assessing the adhesion performance on rusted steel surface, specimens after 12 hours of corrosion treatment was shown to have 2.1N/mm, and specimens after 168 hours of corrosion treatment was shown to have 2.0N/mm adhesion strength performance.

  • Localized corrosions damages in their structural sections can be occurred affected by installed environment conditions with high temperature as near the coastline and humidity or their poor maintenance situation. In bearing supports of steel bridges, especially, lower web and vertical stiffener in end girder support can be easily corroded because of relatively higher humidity due to the narrow space in the end of girder and the wetted accumulated sediments affected by rain water or antifreezing admixture leaked from expansion joint. It can be related to change in their structural performance. In this study, thus, bearing strength test specimens were fabricated considering corrosion damage in the web and vertical stiffeners and the change in their bearing strengths were experimentally evaluated. From the test results, localized corrosion damage of structural members in the end girder affected the bearing strength of end girder support, especially, localized corrosion damage of the vertical stiffener relatively highly affected their bearing strengths.

  • High temperature - high pressure apparatus was developed to simulate nickel fewite corrosion products which were main compositions of the radioactive crud in the nuclear power plant. Corrosion product similar to the crud was obtained by a tube accumulator system. Nickel alloy (Inconel 690) and carbon steel (SA106 Gr. C) were corroded at 270 $\^{circ}C$ in the corrosion product generator. Ni ions and Fe ions dissolved by corrosion reaction were able to be transported to the accumulator because the crud generation mechanism was the solubility change with temperature. To evaluate the properties of simulated corrosion products, scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation and EDAX analysis were performed. SEM observation of corrosion product showed the needlelike or crystal structure of oxide depending on precipitating location. The crystal oxide was the nickel ferrite, which was similar to the crud in nuclear power plants.

An Electrochemical Evaluation on Corrosion Properties of Welding Zone of Stainless Steel by GTAW (GTAW에 의한 스테인리스강 용접부위의 부식특성에 관한 전기화학적 평가)

  • GTAW was carried out to the austenitic 304(STS 304) and 22 APU stainless steels. In this case, difference of the corrosion characteristics of welded zone with STS 304 and 22APU mentioned above was investigated with electrochemical methods. Vickers hardness of weld metal in case of STS 304 (Hv-250) showed a relatively higher value than this of 22 APU(Hv-217). The corrosion current densities of weld metal of 22APU and heat affected zone of STS 304 were observed at the highest value compared to those of other welding zone respectively. This is probably because chromium depletion field due to chromium carbide formed to weld metal of 22APU and to heat affected zone of STS 304 can preferentially easily be corroded with more active anode than other fields. Consequently it is thought that application of the other welding methods like as laser welding or using of the optimum filler metals is necessary to improve the corrosion resistance of welding parts of these steels.

Effect of Annealing Heat Treatment to Characteristics of AlDC8 (Al-Si-Cu) Alloy

  • ALDC8 (Al-Si-Cu) alloy has been often corroded with pattern of intergranular corrosion in corrosive environments. Thus, in order to improve its corrosion resistance, the effect of annealing heat treatment to corrosion resistance and hardness was investigated with parameters of heating temperatures such as $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. The hardness was varied with annealing temperature and slightly decreased with annealing heat treatment. However, the relation between annealing temperature and hardness agreed not well each other. Corrosion potential was shifted to noble direction and corrosion current density was also decreased with increasing annealing temperature. Moreover, both AC impedance at 10 mHz and polarization resistance on the cyclic voltammogram curve were also increased with increasing annealing temperature. Furthermore, intergranular corrosion was somewhat observed in non heat treatment as well as annealing temperatures at $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$, while, intergranular corrosion was not nearly observed at annealing temperature of $400^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$. Consequently, it is considered that the annealing heat treatment of ALDC8 alloy may be an available method not only to inhibit its intergranular corrosion but also to improve its corrosion resistance.

The Effect of Annealing Heat Treatment by Anodic Polarization Impedance Experiments for Cu-10%Ni Alloy

  • Copper has been used extensively as an electric wire or as a base material in various types of machineries owing to its good electrical and thermal conductivity and good fabricating property, as well as its good corrosion resistance compared to iron. Furthermore, the copper-nickel alloy has significant corrosion resistance in severely corrosive environments. Although, cupro-nickel alloy shows better corrosion resistance than the brass and bronze series, this alloy also corroded in severely corrosive environments, including aggressive chloride ions, dissolved oxygen, and condition of fast flowing seawater. In this study, and annealing treatment at various annealing temperatures was carried out on the cupro-nickel (Cu-10%Ni) alloy, and the effects of annealing were investigated using electrochemical methods, such as measuring the polarization and impedance behaviors under flowing seawater conditions. The corrosion resistance increased by annealing compared to non heat treatment in the absence of flowing seawater. In particular, the sample annealed at $200^{\circ}C$ exhibited the best corrosion resistance. The impedance in the presence of flowing seawater showed higher values than in the absence of flowing seawater. Furthermore, the highest impedances was observed in the sample annealed at $800^{\circ}C$, irrespective of the present of flowing seawater. Consequently, the corrosion resistance of cupro-nickel (Cu-10%Ni) alloy in a severely corrosive environment can be improved somewhat by annealing.
