Durational Correlates of Prosodic Categories: The Case of Two Korean Voiceless Coronal Fricatives

  • This paper is a production study of the effects of Korean prosody on two voiceless coronal fricatives /$s^h$/ and /s*/. The target segments were embedded in four prosodic positions: initial to the Intonational Phrase or the Accentual Phrase, and medial to the Accentual Phrase or to the Prosodic Word. Acoustic measurements showed that the durational differences associated with the /$s^h$/ versus /s*/ contrast vary in magnitude in different prosodic positions, confirming the proposal that segmental properties are affected by prosodic categories. This suggests that any speech synthesizer should take into consideration prosodically conditioned durational variation.

  • This paper explores the perceptual relevance of acoustical correlates of emotional speech by using formant synthesizer. The focus is on the role of mean pitch, pitch range, speed rate and phonation type when it comes to synthesizing emotional speech. The result of this research is backing up the traditional impressionistic observations. However it suggests that some phonation types should be synthesized with further refinement.

Antioxidant Activity Resveratrol Closely Correlates with Its Monoamine oxidase-A Inhibitory Activity

  • Polyhydroxystilbenes including resveratrol were reported to competitively inhibit monoamine oxidase-A-without structural relation with substrates and cynthetic inhibitors for the enzyme. We attempt to explore a plausible mechanism for their inhibitory activity on MAO-A. All the polyhydroxystilbenes tested showed the antioxidant activity on liver homogenate. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity turned out to closely correlate with the MAO-A inhibitory activity.

  • Southwest Hokkaido (Sapporo-Iwanai district) in the Northeast Japan arc (Fig. 1) is one of the best places to test the correlation among tectonic regime, stress field, magmatic style and hydrothermal mineralization. This paper reviews the Miocene to Pleistocene tectonic framework, geology, magmatic style and stress field of southwest Hokkaido, and correlates them with different types of deposits (Kuroko, epithermal base-metal and precious-metal).   • Rg3 is a derivative of triterpenoid dammarane, which originally extracted from Red Ginseng, which have been known to have neuroprotective, vasodilator, antioxidative, antimetastasis, and direct anticancer effects. These various backgrounds of Rg3 can provide an additional interest in respect to the “hematopoiesis” in bone marrow and spleen cells. We, therefore, have investigated what effects and correlates of Rg3 (e.g. suppression and side effects) are affected in relation with the bone marrow and spleen cells of mouse. (omitted)

Neuroimaging of Germinal Matrix and Intraventricular Hemorrhage in Premature Infants

  • Germinal matrix and intraventricular hemorrhage (GM-IVH) are the major causes of intracranial hemorrhage in premature infants. Cranial ultrasound (cUS) is the imaging modality of choice for diagnosing and classifying GM-IVH. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), usually performed at term-equivalent age, is more sensitive than cUS in identifying hemorrhage in the brain. Post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation is a significant complication of GM-IVH and correlates with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. In this review, we discuss the various imaging findings of GM-IVH in premature infants, focusing on the role of cUS and MRI.
