A core catcher is considered as a promising engineered system to stabilize the molten corium in the containment during a postulated severe accident in a nuclear power plant. Conceptually, the core catcher consists of a carbon steel body, sacrificial material, protection material, and engineered cooling channel. The cooling capacity of the engineered cooling channel should be guaranteed to remove the decay heat of the molten corium. The flow in ex-vessel core catcher is a combined problem of a two-phase flow in the engineered cooling channel and a single-phase natural circulation in the whole core catcher system. In this study, the analysis of the test facility for the core catcher using the CUPID code, which is a three-dimensional thermal-hydraulic code for the simulation of two-phase flows, was carried out to evaluate its cooling capacity.
The application of neutron noise analysis (NNA) to the ex-core neutron detector signal for monitoring the vibration characteristics of a reactor core support barrel (CSB) was investigated. Ex-core flux data were generated by using a nonanalog Monte Carlo neutron transport method in a simulated CSB model where the implicit capture and Russian roulette technique were utilized. First and third order beam and shell modes of CSB vibration were modeled based on parallel processing simulation. A NNA module was developed to analyze the ex-core flux data based on its time variation, normalized power spectral density, normalized cross-power spectral density, coherence, and phase differences. The data were then analyzed with a fuzzy logic module to determine the vibration characteristics. The ex-core neutron signal fluctuation was directly proportional to the CSB's vibration observed at 8Hz and15Hzin the beam mode vibration, and at 8Hz in the shell mode vibration. The coherence result between flux pairs was unity at the vibration peak frequencies. A distinct pattern of phase differences was observed for each of the vibration models. The developed fuzzy logic module demonstrated successful recognition of the vibration frequencies, modes, orders, directions, and phase differences within 0.4 ms for the beam and shell mode vibrations.

One of the unsolved problems in Neural Networks is the interpretation of hidden layers. This paper defines the Core-Net which has an input(p levels) and an output(q levels) with 2-layers as a basic circuit of neural network. In have suggested an equation, {{{{ {a}_{p,q} = {{q}^{2}} over {2}p(p-1)- { q} over {2 } (3 { p}^{2 } -7p+2)+ { p}^{2 }-3p+2}}}}, whichs ws the capacity of the Core-Net and have proved it by using the mathematical induction. It has been also shown that some of the problems with hidden layers can be solved by using the Core-Net and using simulation of an example.

This paper presents preliminary analysis and results on IASCC sensitivity of a core shroud in the reactor pressure vessel. First, neutron irradiation flux distribution of the reactor internals was calculated by using the Monte Carlo simulation code, MCNP6.1 and the nuclear data library, ENDF/B-VII.1. Second, based on the neutron irradiation flux distribution, temperature and stress distributions of the core shroud during normal operation were determined by performing finite element analysis using the commercial finite element analysis program, ABAQUS, considering irradiation aging-related degradation mechanisms. Last, IASCC sensitivity of the core shroud was assessed by using the IASCC sensitivity definition of EPRI MRP-211 and the finite element analysis results. As a result of the preliminary analysis, it was found that the point at which the maximum IASCC sensitivity is derived varies over operating time, initially moving from the shroud plate located in the center of the core to the top shroud plate-ring connection brace over operating time. In addition, it was concluded that IASCC will not occur on the core shroud even after 60 years of operation (40EFPYs) because the maximum IASCC sensitivity is less than 0.5.
A macroscopic cross section generation model was developed for the conceptual horizontal, compact high temperature gas reactor (HC-HTGR). Because there are many sources of spectral effects in the design and analysis of the core, conventional LWR methods have limitations for accurate simulation of the HC-HTGR using a neutron diffusion core neutronics simulator. Several super-cell model configurations were investigated to consider the spectral effect of neighboring cells. A new history variable was introduced for the existing library format to more accurately account for the history effect from neighboring nodes and reactivity control drums. The macroscopic cross section library was validated through comparison with cross sections generated using full core Monte Carlo models and single cell cross section for both 3D core steady-state problems and 2D and 3D depletion problems. Core calculations were then performed with the AGREE HTR neutronics and thermal-fluid core simulator using super-cell cross sections. With the new history variable, the super-cell cross sections were in good agreement with the full core cross sections even for problems with significant spectrum change during fuel shuffling and depletion.

In the Ordered Core Based Tree(OCBT) protocol, a core location is the most important feature to affect the performance. In this paper, the location placement of multiple level cores is studied. The proposed algorithm isthat each node in the network evaluates a sum of shortest path costs from all the other nodes and the entirenetwork is divided into a hierarchy region to have 3-logical level(Small, Medium, Large). The node to have thelowest cost in each S-Region is decided to be a core node. Then, the core nodes in the each S-Region evaluatea sum of shortest path costs from all the other core nodes in the same M-Region. The core node to have thelowest cost is decided to be the upper level core node. Similarly the highest level core node is decided in theL-Region. The proposed algoritthm is compared with conventional two methods to put the core nodes in thenetwork One is the random method to put the core nodes randomly. The other is the center method to locatethe core node at the nearest node from the center of each S-Region and then to locate the highest level corenode at the nearest core node from the center of the entire network. Extensive simulations are performed in theview of mean tree cost and join latency. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has betterperformance than random method or center method.
Energy induced by minor earthquake and micro vibration cannot be dissipated by traditional buckling-restrained braces (BRBs). To solve this problem, a new type of hybrid passive control device, named as VE-BRB, which is configured by a BRB with high-damping viscoelastic (VE) layers, is developed and studied. Theoretical analysis, performance tests, numerical simulation and case analysis are conducted to study the seismic behavior of VE-BRBs. The results indicate that the combination of hysteretic and damping devices lead to a multi-phased nature and good performance. VE-BRB's working state can be divided into three phases: before yielding of the steel core, VE layers provide sufficient damping ratio to mitigate minor vibrations; after yielding of the steel core, the steel's hysteretic deformations provide supplemental dissipative capacity for structures; after rupture of the steel core, VE layers are still able to work normally and provide multiple security assurance for structures. The simulation results agreed well with the experimental results, validating the finite element analysis method, constitutive models and the identified parameters. The comparison of the time history analysis on a 6-story frame with VE-BRBs and BRBs verified the advantages of VE-BRB for seismic protection of structures compared with traditional BRB. In general, VE-BRB had the potential to provide better control effect on structural displacement and shear in all stages than BRB as expected.
The quarter-core simulation of BEAVRS Cycle 2 depletion benchmark has been conducted using the MCS/CTF coupling system. MCS/CTF is a cycle-wise Picard iteration based inner-coupling code system, which couples sub-channel T/H (thermal/hydraulic) code CTF as a T/H solver in Monte Carlo neutron transport code MCS. This coupling code system has been previously applied in the BEAVRS benchmark Cycle 1 full-core simulation. The Cycle 2 depletion has been performed with T/H feedback based on the spent fuel materials composition pre-generated by the Cycle 1 depletion simulation using refueling capability of MCS code. Meanwhile, the MCS internal one-dimension T/H solver (MCS/TH1D) has been also applied in the simulation as the reference. In this paper, an analysis of the detailed criticality boron concentration and the axially integrated assembly-wise detector signals will be presented and compared with measured data based on the real operating physical conditions. Moreover, the MCS/CTF simulated results for neutronics and T/H parameters will be also compared to MCS/TH1D to figure out their difference, which proves the practical application of MCS into the BEAVRS benchmark two-cycle depletion simulations.

In order to overcome the hardware complexity and performance limit problems, recently the multi-core architecture has been prevalent. For hardware simplicity, usually RISC processor is adopted as the unit core processor. However, if the performance of unit core processor is enhanced, the overall performance of the multi-core processor architecture can be further enhanced. In this paper, in-order superscalar processor is utilized as the core for the multi-core processor architecture. Using SPEC 2000 benchmarks as input, the trace-driven simulation has been performed for the number of superscalar cores between 2 and 16 and the window size of 4 to 16 extensively. As a result, the 16-core superscalar processor for the window size of 16 results in 8.4 times speed up over the single core superscalar processor. When compared with the same number of cores, the multi-core superscalar processor performance doubles that of the multi-core RISC processor.
The computer-aided performance simulation can reduce periods for development of products and cut down on the cost comparing with former trial-and-error procedures. This study has developed a simulation program for a vehicle thermal management system integrating an engine cooling system and an air conditioning system considering interactions and arrangement of air side heat exchangers such as power steering oil cooler, air-cooled transmission oil cooler, condenser, and radiator. The program may be also used for the system performance analysis according to the configuration of the engine coolant side heat exchangers such as water-cooled transmission oil cooler, EGR cooler, and heater core. Experiments utilizing an environmental wind tunnel has been conducted to assess the performance of the system according to the arrangement of air side heat exchangers. Some modification of the coolant loop layout can enhance the heat core performance up to 7% according to the results of the simulations.
