  • The purpose of this study was to examine the cytotoxicity of orthodontic wire which had an increased diameter through electroplating, and to evaluate its possible clinical applications, First. nickel plating was carried out on the commercially available stainless steel wire using an electroplating technique For the comparison of the electroplated wire with ready made stainless steel wire and titanium or copper. each wire was incubated for 72 hours in a medium. The release of the metal ion was measured using ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrophotometer). Balb/c 3T3 mouse fibroblast was put on a microplate and placed in an incubated medium of 75%, 50%, and 20% dilation. An MTT analysis was used to compare with the medium only. The change in absorbency value of each wire group and the difference of absorbency value according to the change of dilution was measured The results of ICP-AES analysis showed that great amount nickel iou was isolated from electroplated orthodontic wires and great amount copper ion was isolated from copper. The results of the MTT analysis showed that there was no difference in the absorbency value of titanium at any dilution. However, the electroplated wires (p<0.001) the stainless steel wires (p<0.05) and the copper (P<0.001) were statistically significantly lower than those of medium only at all dilutions. Assessment as per ISO 10993, part 5, showed that electroplated wire was alloted to 'moderate cytotoxic' the titanium and stainless steel wire were 'non-cytotoxic' The results of this study indicate that the electroplated orthodontic wires need additional efforts to decrease cytotoxicity for their clinical applications.

  • Disposal of hazardous ions in the aqueous streams is a significant industrial waste problem.. Waste streams from electronics, electroplating, and photographic industries contain metal ions such as copper, nickel, zinc, chromium(IV), cadmium, aluminum, silver, and gold, amongst others in various aqueous solutions such as sulfates, chlorides, fluorocarbons, and cyanides. Typical plating solutions having similar compositions are listed in Table 1. Spent process streams in catalyst manufacturing facilities also contain precious metals such as Ag, Pt, and Pd. Developing an effective recovery process of these metal ions for reuse is important.

  • The formation of methanol directly from methane and steam was observed over Cu ion-exchanged mordenite. Furthermore, the continuous production of methanol was achieved by co-feeding methane and steam over Cumordenite. The methanol production rate was comparable to that reported in the stepwise process in which activation, methane reaction, and extraction of methanol were carried out separately.

  • In order to simulate the leaching solution of copper sulfide ore in $FeCl_3$ solutions, synthetic solutions with composition of $FeCl_3$-$FeCl_2$-$CuCl_2$-CuCl-NaCl-HCl-$H_2O$ were prepared. The concentration of iron and copper chloride was varied from 0.1 to 1 m in synthetic solutions. The effect of composition on the mixed solution pH and potential at $25^{\circ}C$ was measured. When HCl concentration was constant, the increase of CuCl concentration increased solution pH. The increase of other solutes excluding HCl and CuCl decreased solution pH owing to the increase of the activity coefficient of hydrogen ion. A high CuCl concentration favored the redox equilibrium in the direction of Cu(I), while $FeCl_3$ had the opposite effect.

  • An electromagnetic micro x-y stage for probe-based data storage (PDS) has been fabricated. The x-y stage consists of a silicon body inside which planar copper coils are embedded, a glass substrate bonded to the silicon body, and eight permanent magnets. The dimensions of flexures and copper coils were determined to yield $100{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ in x and y directions under 50 mA of supplied current and to have 440 Hz of natural frequency. For the application to PDS devices, electromagnetic stage should have flat top surface for the prevention of its interference with multi-probe array, and have coils with low resistance for low power consumption. In order to satisfy these design criteria, conducting planar copper coils have been electroplated within silicon trenches which have high aspect ratio ($5{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$in width and $30{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$in depth). Silicon flexures with a height of $250{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ were fabricated by using inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICP-RIE). The characteristics of a fabricated electromagnetic stage were measured by using laser doppler vibrometer (LDV) and dynamic signal analyzer (DSA). The DC gain was $0.16{\;}\mu\textrm{m}/mA$ and the maximum displacement was $42{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ at a current of 180 mA. The measured natural frequency of the lowest mode was 325 Hz. Compared with the designed values, the lower natural frequency and DC gain of the fabricated device are due to the reverse-tapered ICP-RIE process and the incomplete assembly of the upper-sided permanent magnets for LDV measurements.

  • Heavy weight concrete can be used in marine concrete structure to improve resistance against high wave energy. However, heavy weight aggregate, which is an indispensable material for heavy weight concrete, is difficult to be supplied in large quantities because its use is limited due to its high cost. In this work, the applicability of heavy weight by-products, copper and 3 month aged steelmaking slags, were evaluated as sources of heavy weight aggregate for marine concrete structures. Experimental results showed that copper slag was found to be a stable material for marine concrete structure. However, 3 month aged steelmaking slag showed significant expansion by $80^{\circ}$ water immersion test and ASTM C 1260 test. In addition, depth of chloride ion penetration in concrete was higher at which steelmaking slags were located. It was associated with porosity of steelmaking slag, and for this reason, steelmaking slag was not found to be suitable for marine concrete structure.
