  • The effect of culture medium copper availability on the specific growth rate(${\mu}$) and carbon conversion efficiency (CCE) was sutided for an obligatory methanotroph Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b under various combinations of carbon and nitrogen sources. Methane or methanol was used as a carbon source, and nitrate or ammonium was used as a nitrogen source. Medium copper availability determined the intracellular location or kind of methane monooxygenase (MMO), cell-membrane (particulate or pMMO) when copper was present and cytoplasm (soluble or sMMO) when copper was deficient. When methane was used as a carbon source, copper-containing medium exhibited higher ${\mu}$ and CCE than copper-free medium regardless of the kind of nitrogen source. When methanol was used as a carbon source, however, the effect of copper disappeared. Ammonium gave the higher ${\mu}$ and CCE than nitrate for both methane and methanol. Those observation suggest that there exist an important difference in energy utilization efficiency for methane assimilation between sMMO and pMMO.

  • The present study was designed to assess the influence of caeca on the availability of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese and copper from soybean, sunflower, rapeseed, sesame, fish and meat cum bone meal in adult roosters. The excretion of endogenous origin minerals viz., copper, magnesium, manganese and calcium was significantly (p<0.001) higher in caecectomized than in normal roosters. The difference in the endogenous excretion was 50; 60.45; 40.35 and 29.63 per cent for copper, magnesium, manganese and calcium, respectively, in caecectomized roosters. The caeca played a pivotal role in the reabsorption of endogenous origin calcium, magnesium, manganese and copper. The mechanism of phosphorus absorption by the caecal epithelium was negligible. The caecectomized roosters underestimated the bioavailability of copper in sunflower meal and manganese in almost all the test feedstuffs. The present investigation revealed that the caeca played a critical role in the absorption of minerals from vegetable protein feedstuffs which escape digestion and absorption in the small and large intestinal segments.

  • Effects of various concentrations of copper in solid fibrous form and methylglyoxal (MG) on phosphorus uptake and growth change of green algae Scenedesmus obliquus were studied. There was significant differences among cultures treated with various concentrations of copper and MG in growth of algae with parameters of cell numbers, photosynthetic rate and cellular morphology, and phosphorus uptake by cell. When the copper in media is treated with 25 mg or 50 mg per 100 ml of Bristol solution, the mean cell number of algae was 15.642${\times}$10$\^$6/ cells$.$ml$\^$-1/ and 12.986${\times}$10$\^$6/ cells$.$ml$\^$-1/, respectively, while those of algae in culture without copper was 18.486${\times}$10$\^$6/ cells$.$ml$\^$-1/. The mean cell area of 2450 ${\mu}$m$^2$, 1894 ${\mu}$m$^2$and 1697 ${\mu}$m$^2$in basic media, basic media with 25 mg of copper and basic media with 50 mg of copper was showed the inhibitory effect of copper on algal growth. The algal growth was stimulated by MG when the culture was treated with 25 mg of copper or without copper, while it was inhibited when the culture was treated with 50 mg of copper. It was considered that there was significant interaction between copper and MG on algal growth. The phosphorus concentration in algal medium treated with 25 mg or 50 mg of copper was 29.435 ppm and 26.224 ppm, respectively, while those of algae in culture without copper was 52.8 ppm, which shows that the application of copper in algal medium can prevent the availability of phosphorus to algal cell.

  • The active site for the formation of acrolein in propylene oxidation reaction over copper(Ⅱ)-exchanged zeolite Y has been studied. At the early stage of the reaction, the formation of hydrocarbons was observed. The formation of hydrocarbons decreased gradually during the course of reaction, apparently due to the poisoning the Bronsted acid sites. The formation of acrolein was quite low when the formation of hydrocarbons was proceeding. The formation of acrolein was depend on the copper ion content and this can be related to the availability of the copper ions inside the supercage. It seems that it is the copper ion not the Bronsted acid site which is primarily responsible for the formation of acrolein.

  • Piezoelectricity is defined as the ability of certain materials to produce electric signals when mechanically stressed or to deform when an electrical potential is applied. Piezo technology is becoming increasingly crucial as intelligent devices use vibration sensors to detect vibrations in consumer electronics, the automotive industry, architectural design, and other applications. A wide range of applications is now possible with piezoelectric sensors, such as skin-attachable devices that monitor health and detect diseases. In this article, copper nanoparticles are used in the piezoelectric sensor as the driving agent of the magnetic field. Magnetic nanocatalysts containing copper nanoparticles are used due to their cheapness and availability. Considering that the increase of the electric field acting on the piezoelectric increases the damping (As a result, damping materials reduce radiation noise and increase material transfer losses by altering the natural vibration frequency of the vibrating surface). Among the advantages of this method are depreciating a significant amount of input energy using high energy absorption capacity and controlling slight vibrations in the sensors.

  • One suggested mechanism underlying copper (Cu) deficiency teratogenicity is a low availability of nitric oxide (NO), signaling molecule which is essential in developmental processes. Increased superoxide anions secondary to decreased activities of Cu-zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn SOD) in Cu deficiency can interact with NO to form peroxynitrite, which can nitrate proteins at tyrosine residues. In addition, peroxynitrite formation can limit NO bioavailability. We previously reported low NO availability and increased protein nitration in Cu deficient (Cu-) embryos. In the current study, we tested whether Cu deficiency alters downstream signaling of NO by assessing cyclic GMP (cGMP) and phosphorylated vasodilator-stimulating phosphoprotein (VASP) levels, and whether NO supplementation can affect these targets as well as protein nitration. Gestation day 8.5 embryos from Cu adequate (Cu+) or Cu- dams were collected and cultured in either Cu+ or Cu- media for 48 hr. A subset of embryos was cultured in Cu- media supplemented with a NO donor (DETA/NONOate; 20 ${\mu}M$) and/or Cu-Zn SOD. Cu-/Cu- embryos showed a higher incidence of embryonic and yolk sac abnormalities, low NO availability, blunted dose-response in NO concentrations to increasing doses of acetylcholine, low mRNA expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), increased levels of 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) compared to Cu+/Cu+ controls. cGMP concentrations tended to be low in Cu-/Cu- embryos, and they were significantly lower in Cu-/Cu- yolk sacs than in controls. Levels of phosphorylated VASP at serine 239 (P-VASP) were similar in all groups. NO donor supplementation to the Cu- media ameliorated embryonic and yolk sac abnormalities, and resulted in increased levels of cGMP without altering levels of P-VASP and 3-NT. Taken together, these data support the concept that Cu deficiency limits NO availability and alters NO/cGMP-dependent signaling in Cu- embryos and yolk sacs, which contributes to Cu deficiency-induced abnormal development.

  • An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of supplemental copper (Cu) chelates (methionine, chitosan and yeast) on the performance, nutrient digestibility, serum IgG level, gizzard erosion, Cu content in the liver and excreta and the level of total cholesterol in breast muscle and serum of broiler chickens. Two hundred and forty hatched broiler chickens (Ross$^{(R)}$ 208) were assigned to 4 treatments: control, 100 ppm Cu in methionine chelate (Met-Cu), 100 ppm Cu in chitosan chelate (Chitosan-Cu) and 100 ppm Cu in yeast chelate (Yeast-Cu). Each treatment had six replicates of 10 (5 males+5 females) birds each. Weight gain and feed intake tended to be higher in Cu chelate treatments than the control; weight gain was significantly higher in the Met-Cu chelate treatment and feed intake was significantly higher in the Yeast-Cu chelate treatment than the control (p<0.05). Feed/gain was significantly different between treatments in which Met-Cu was lowest followed by the control, Chitosan-Cu and Yeast-Cu. DM availability was increased by Cu chelates among which chitosan-Cu showed the highest DM availability. Cu chelates supplementation tended to increase gizzard erosion index, and Cu content in the liver was highest in the Met-Cu treatment. Supplementation of Cu chelates tended to decrease total cholesterol level in breast muscle and serum but tended to increase the level of HDL in serum. It was concluded that dietary supplementation of 100 ppm Cu in chelates increased weight gain, feed intake and DM availability. Met-Cu was more effective than Chitosan-Cu or Yeast-Cu in improving productivity of broiler chickens.

  • The Hg, Cd, Cu, Mn, and Zn in bottom sediments of han river and their tributaries were analyzed to evaluate the seasonal variations of heavy metals. Leaching tests were also performed for estimation of availability of heavy metal retention in sediments. Sediments of Anyang stream showed the highest concentration of heavy metal in the sediment samples. Heavy metal concentration was heavily depended upon the heavy metal source of tributaries of han river and particle distribution. Clay and silt had higher concentration of heavy metals than very fine san and fine sand due to difference of retention capability of heavy metal. The highest concentration of heavy metal was observed in bottom sediments irrespective of sites investigated. Heavy metals and ignition loss showed positive relations, and higher relationships with p-value <0.01 were observed between copper and lead. copper and zinc, and depended on the pH condition of leaching test, and leachated fraction increased with decrease of the pH.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of three different copper (Cu) sources (one inorganic and two organics) and levels (0, 50, and 100 mg/kg) on the growth performance, Cu digestibility, fecal mineral excretion, serum mineral concentration, jejunal morphology, and serum biochemical profile of growing pigs. A total of 42 male, growing pigs (31.08 ± 1.82 kg) were randomly assigned to seven treatments consisting of one negative control (0 mg/kg of added Cu level) and treatments with copper sulfate (CuSO4), Cu-amino acid complex (CuAA), and Cu-hydroxy-4-methylthio butanoate chelate complex (CuHMB) at 50 and 100 mg/kg each for 28 d. Pigs fed 50 or 100 mg/kg of Cu showed improved (p < 0.05) average daily gain and feed intake. Although Cu excretion decreased (p < 0.01) in pigs fed 100 mg/kg of organic Cu sources compared to those fed CuSO4, there was no difference between the Cu sources in pigs fed 50 mg/kg. However, the apparent total tract digestibility of Cu increased (p < 0.01) in pigs fed organic Cu sources compared with that in pigs fed CuSO4. The addition of CuHMB increased (p < 0.01) serum phosphorus and sulfur concentrations; however, there were no effects of source and level on jejunal morphology and serum biochemical profile. These results suggest that the inclusion (50 mg/kg) of organic Cu sources (CuAA and CuHMB) in the growing pig diet could be beneficial for growth performance and Cu availability and may reduce environmental pollution.

  • The aim of present research was to know Cd availability. As a first report of this work, we present some results of analysing soil Cd and Cu contents on a part of Burgundy in France. Soil samples were collected from surface-ploughed layer in fields across the southern part of the Yonne district, Burgundy, France. From the first extractable Cd content on a ratio (soil : EDTA =1:10), the soil Cd values on Carixien soil series decreased to a-third or to a-fourth of those Cd values on a lower ratio (soil : EDTA = 15). While the extractable Cd of the soil samples on Sols marron soil series decreased in a smaller extent. The changes of mixing ratio from 150 (soil : EDTA) to 1:10 and to 1:5 (soil : EDTA) had decreased the extractable Cu contents. But the range of the decrease was not so large as that of Cd contents. Soils on some soil series were a half (Carixien) or two-thirds level (Dombrien, Aubes) when comparing the extractable Cu content on 1:5 ratio to the content on 150 ratio. The absorbance for Cu analyses of soils on Carixien, Terres noires, Sols marron soil series varied in larger extent (expressed on standard deviation for 6 values) than that of soils on Dombrien, Aubes soil series.
