Purpose: The purpose of this study was to check the stress, stress and coping ability of nursing college students and to identify factors that influence college life adjustment. Method: This study was a descriptive research study to confirm the correlation between stress, stress response, coping ability, and college life adaptation of nursing college students, and to analyze the factors that influence college life adjustment. The data collection period was from August 17 to 23, 2020, for one week, the researcher directly explains the purpose and purpose of the study to 221 nursing college students nationwide, and online surveys to those who have agreed to participate in the study. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Win 20.0 program. Results: Adaptation to college was negatively correlated with stress (r=-.285, p<.001), stress response (r=-.258, p<.001), and coping ability (r=.512, p<.001) had a positive correlation. The most significant factor influencing the study subjects' adaptation to college life was coping ability (β=.473, p<.001), followed by stress (β=-.185, p=.002) in the order of The explanatory power of the factors affecting the subject's adaptation to college life was 28.9%. Conclusion: As a result of this study, it means that nursing students' adaptation to college life has less stress and stress response, and higher coping ability increases college life adaptation. The factor that influenced the adjustment to college life was the most significant factor, followed by stress. In order for nursing students to adjust to college life smoothly, it is thought that coping measures to reduce stress and stress responses and overcome them are necessary.
The effects of coping on physical and psychosocial adaptation in the 297 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were investigated. The coping methods were divided into compliance of medical regimens, self-control activities, and cognitive control. The effects of these coping methods was analyzed with stepwise regression. The physical adaptation is found to be significantly affected by cognitive control, self-control activities, and compliance of medical regimens in order Compliance of the medical regimens affects negatively the physical adaptation. And psychosocial adaptation is significantly affected by the cognitive control. The analysis of these results by illness duration showed the distinct differences. That is in the patients who experienced the disease less than 48 months, the physical and the psychosocial adaptation were significantly affected only by the cognitive control. But in the patients who experienced the disease more than 96 months, the physical and the psychosocial adaptation were significantly affected by self-control activities. Based upon these results, it is recommended that the nurses who care the newly diagnosed patients emphasize on the positive side of the state. And the patients who are diagnosed long ago need the nursing programs which teach and promote self-control activities. Also it is suggested that the results of compliance must be considered rather than as the result variable.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify resiliency factor, to test causal relationship and effect of resiliency factors on adaptation in families of children with cancer. A conceptual framework was constructed based on McCubbin's resiliency model. Hypotheses were tested with empirical data. Method: Data were collected using self-report questionnaire from 232 families of children with cancer. The collected data were analyzed using the SAS program and LISREL program for covariance structural analysis. Result: Family hardiness and problem-solving coping had significant direct effects on adaptation in families of children with cancer. Social support had significant indirect and total effect on adaptation. Family Schema had significant direct effect on family hardiness and problem-solving coping. Problem-solving communication had a significant direct effect on family hardiness and an indirect effect on family functioning and problem-solving coping. Among the resiliency factors, family hardiness had the greatest effect on adaptation in family of children with cancer. Conclusion: The findings suggest that nursing interventions to enhance family hardiness, problem-solving coping and social support would result in an increase in adaptation in families of children with cancer. An integrated intervention that emphasizes and promotes resiliency factors should be developed and established for families of children with cancer.
This study aimed to empirically test the causal model of stress-coping-adaptation for unwed mothers, which was built upon the Lazarus and Folkman's(1984) "Stress-Coping-Adaptation" model. In doing so researchers endeavored to provide practice implications as well as theoretical ones which would be helpful both to alleviate the unwed mothers' stress level, and to facilitate social adaptation of the unwed mothers. In order to fulfill research purpose data were collected from the national sample of 423 unwed mothers in Korea. The results showed that the overall goodness of the fit of the proposed causal model was excellent. Most of the path coefficients between social support, stress, coping, and adaption turned out to be statistically significant. The moderating effects of "pursuit of social support" between stress and adaption was not significant statistically, though. Implications and suggestions were provided to reduce the level of stress of the unwed mothers, and to facilitate the adaptation of the unwed mothers.

Purpose: This study was conducted to describe stress, stress coping, and school adaptation according to Myers-Briggs type indicator(MBTI) personality type in freshmen nursing students. Methods: This study was a cross sectional survey and the data was collected from 267 freshmen nursing students by means of self reported questionnaires from March 3 to 30, 2012. Collected data were analyzed on SPSS win 18.0. Results: 16 personality types were all seen in this study participants. There were no significant differences in stress, stress coping, and school adaptation according to 4 functions and 4 temperaments of MBTI. Conclusion: Nursing students show various personality types and we need to understand their diversity and reflect it to a school curriculum or education program development. Further study is required to identify the effects of self-understanding program on stress management and school adaptation.
Purpose: This study is a descriptive study to identify the degree of workplace bullying experience of newly graduated nurses and the difference in coping and adaptation processing, organizational socialization in relation to workplace bullying experience. Methods: The Study participants were newly graduated nurses with 3 months to 1-year clinical experience (N=186) and conveniently sampled from a small to medium-sized hospital located in G Metropolitan City. Data were collected in July 2018, using structured questionnaires. Results: Half of the participants (50.0%) reported workplace bullying experience. Most bulling experiences were person or work related. Newly graduated nurses who experienced bullying in the workplace demonstrated significantly lower coping and adaptation process (t=3.34, p=.001) and organizational socialization (t=7.46, p=<.001) than nurses who did not experience bullying in the workplace. Conclusion: Orientation programs for newly graduated nurses need to include contents that can improve the coping and adaptation process. Nursing managers at small and medium-sized general hospitals should actively support the mentor-mentee program to promote the organizational socialization of newly graduated nurses.
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of couples' conflict coping styles upon wives' marital adaptation. The results are as follows: First, the most often-used conflict coping style was 'compromise', and the least-used was 'smoothing over', in both cases of husbands and wives. Second, significant differences were found in 'compromise', 'integration', and 'smoothing over' between the cases of husbands and wives. For example, wives used 'compromise' and 'integration' more frequently than husbands, but 'smoothing over' was more often used by husbands. Third, the most important variable that influenced wives' stress and marital satisfaction was husbands' conflict coping styles. Their own conflict coping styles and demographic variables came as the next. Fourth, the only conflict coping style of wives that influenced the stress and the marital satisfaction was 'dominance'. On husbands' side, 'compromise (stress and marital satisfaction)' and 'dominance (marital satisfaction)' functioned as important variables.
Despite the growing attention to the effective utilization of ICT system in workplace, there is an accumulation of evidence from the literature indicating that organizations do not utilize newly introduced ICT systems to their full functional potential and an amount of new implementations continue to fail. We explore the reasons for the underutilization of new ICT by focusing on the individuals' social networks. This paper investigates how the social networks influence individual adaptation to the new ICT and its related performance. Based on the coping theory, we establish a research model that explains the coping mechanism. Collected data are analyzed to test the proposed model and its hypotheses using PLS and UCINET. The results show that the coping effort mechanism of individuals can be explained in terms of their positions within social networks. We conclude the paper by discussing theoretical and practical implications for the research findings and by proposing future studies.
This study aimed to identify the correlation of stress-coping, humor sense, and adaptation to college of nursing students. Three hundred thirty eight subjects completed a structured questionnaire in June 2012. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. The mean scores were as follows; stress-coping 43.33, humor sense 72.18, and adaptation to college 68.02. It meant beyond the intermediate level. Significant differences were found between adaptation to college scores and general characteristics such as gender, academic year, family type, economic status, campus life satisfaction, relation with faculties, grade, and the relationship with the opposite gender. There was significant but weak correlation of stress-coping, humor sense, and adaptation to college. These results suggest that it is necessary to develop individualized education programs considering students' characteristics. Additionally, university adjustment related factors should be studied.
This study was done to analyze the trends of research on coping in Korea, to suggest future direction, for research on coping, and ultimately to contribute to an increase in explanation of adaptation. This article reviewed 79 nursing research papers on coping done since 1978 by examining them according to the period of publication or presentation, research design, type of subjects, measurement instruments, research for a degree or not, range of reliability, and association of coping and related variables. The results are as follows : The number of studies on coping increased rapidly from the mid-1980's and decreased slowly from the mid-1990's. The maority of the studies were surveys, comparative studies, or correlational studies. The subects of the 46 studies were healthy people, while those in the remaining studies were patients with a variety of illnesses. Thirth-eight studies on coping were done for master's thesis, three for dissertion, and 38 were not degrees. The Bell and Jalowiec coping scales have not been used since the early 1990's. In contrast, Lazarus and Folkman's W.C.C.L. has been used increasingly since that time. The reliabilities of the coping scale were reported in 37 cases and the Cronbach's alpha coefficients were .71 to .86. All subjects reported using more problem-oriented coping than emotion-oriented coping in short-term or emotion-oriented coping and healthy groups did more long-term coping. It was difficult to describe consistently the relationship between stress and coping according to the type of coping scale or research subjects, but generally moderate relationships were found. This was due to instrumental problems and no consideration of situational context. The subject group who used more short-term coping and less long-term coping reported poorer mental status, and higher scores in burnout and state anxiey than others. That is, the relationship between stress and adaptation increased the power of explanation with intervening the mediating effect of coping. The association of locus of control, mastery, social support, and self-concept with coping showed positive relationships : those of uncertainty and severity in illness with coping showed negativerelationships ; those of state anxiety and depression with short-term coping were positive, and those of self-esteem with long-term coping or problem-oriented coping were negative. There were significant differences in the scores of types of coping according to religion, level of education, and socio-economic status. That is, Presbyterians and Catholics, those with higher education levels and higher socio-economic status used more long-term or problem-oriented coping. On the basis of the above findings the following recommendations are made : 1. There is a need to test the mediating effect of coping variable in order to clarify the concept. 2. Longitudinal studies are needed to determine the patterns of change in coping strategies when stressful events are encountered. 3. It's necessary to develop a reliable and variable measurement tool for coping. 4. There is a need to identify subscales of coping to increase explanation of variance 5. It's necessary to consider personal, situational, and antecedent variables : the characteristics of subject populations, the natures of illness and treatment situations. 6. The power of explanation of studies designed to identify the stress-adaptation process should be increased using the combination model of process-oriented coping and cognitive-structural model.
