  • Air-cooled slag showed grindability approximately twice as good as that of water-cooled slag. While the studied water-cooled slag was composed of glass as constituent mineral, the air-cooled slag was mainly composed of melilite. It is assumed that the sulfur in air-cooled slag is mainly in the form of CaS, which is oxidized into $CaS_2O_3$ when in contact with air. $CaS_2O_3$, then, is released mainly as $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ion when in contact with water. However, the sulfur in water-cooled slag functioned as a constituent of the glass structure, so the$S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion was not released even when in contact with water. When no chemical admixture was added, the blended cement of air-cooled slag showed higher fluidity and retention effect than those of the blended cement of the water-cooled slag. It seems that these discrepancies are caused by the initial hydration inhibition effect of cement by the $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion of air-cooled slag. When a superplasticizer is added, the air-cooled slag used more superplasticizer than did the blast furnace slag for the same flow because the air-cooled slag had higher specific surface area due to the presence of micro-pores. Meanwhile, the blended cement of the air-cooled slag showed a greater fluidity retention effect than that of the blended cement of the water-cooled slag. This may be a combined effect of the increased use of superplasticizer and the presence of released $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion; however, further, more detailed studies will need to be conducted.

  • It is necessary to develop a new metal cutting technology which does not use cutting fluid, since cutting fluid can have undesirable effect on workers's health and working environment. For this to be possible, it is necessary to replace the conventional method of using cutting fluid, whose basic functions are removing chip and heat, and providing lubrication between tool and chip. In this work, cooled air is utilized in order to replace cutting fluid. Experiments were carried out while cutting workpiece with HSS flat endmill under a variety of supply conditions for cooled air. Also the performance characteristics of the air cooling system. which was built for the experiments, were carefully analyzed. For the reliable operation of air cooling system. moisture contained in the cooled air had to be removed before being supplied to the workpiece and tools. It was found that depending on the amount of its flow rate the temperature of cooled air changes at the time of injection from the nozzle. The flow rate of cooled air also plays an important role in removing the accumulated chip on the workpiece. After comparing the flank wear for the three cases of using cooled air, cutting fluid, and pure dry technique, it was demonstrated that the level of flank wear was similar for the cases of cooled air and cutting fluid. The pure dry technique, however, showed higher level of flank wear than cooled air.

  • This paper describes the potential advantages in applying evaporative cooling to air-cooled condensers. The cooling characteristics of an air-cooled condenser with its surface fully covered with thin water film are investigated and compared with that of an air-cooled condenser with usual dry surface. By applying the evaporative cooling, the cooling performance of the condenser is shown to improve enormously. When the outdoor air is 35$^{\circ}C$ and 40% in relative humidity, the condensing temperature of the refrigerant is decreased by 2$0^{\circ}C$. Even when the incoming air is fully saturated with water vapor, the evaporation from the wet surface occurs to cause a decrease in the condensing temperature by 1$0^{\circ}C$. The main reason for this improvement is assessed as the addition of an efficient cooling mechanism which is the water evaporation resulting in latent heat absorption.

  • A conceptual study of an air-cooled heat exchanger is conducted to achieve the long-term passive cooling of an integral reactor. A newly designed air-cooled heat exchanger is introduced in the present study and preliminary thermal sizing is demonstrated. This study mainly focuses on feasibility of an innovative air-cooled heat exchanger to extend the cooling period of the passive residual heat removal system(PRHRS) only in passive manners. A vertical shell-and-tube air-cooled heat exchanger is installed at the top of the emergency cooldown tank(ECT) to collect evaporated steam into condensate, which enables water inventory of the ECT to be kept. Finally, thermal sizing of an air-cooled heat exchanger is presented. The length and the number of tubes required, and also the height of a stack are calculated to remove the designated heat duty. The present study will contribute to an enhancement of the passive safety system of an integral reactor.

  • Recently, as a study to air cooled slag, which is an industrial by-product, research is being proceed to use it as a material for concrete. In this study, the workability, air content, compressive strength, CO2 emission and economic feasibility of concrete were analyzed when air cooled slag, an industrial by-product, was applied as aggregate for rural road pavement concrete. As a result of the analysis, both the slump and air contents test results of concrete using the air cooled slag aggregate satisfied the target values, and the compressive strength was increased when the air cooled slag aggregate was used compared to when the natural aggregate was applied. On the other hand, the largest amount of CO2 emission by raw material was found in aggregate. The carbon emission of rural road pavement concrete using air cooled slag aggregate increased when the Korean LCI DB was applied compared to when natural and crushed aggregates were applied, and the emission decreased when the German LCI DB was applied. This results are due to differences in the viewpoints of industrial by-products. However, considering the recycling of waste from the environmental aspect, it is necessary to simultaneously review the CO2 emission and recycling aspects in the future. Also, the application of air cooled slag aggregate had the effect of improving the economic efficiency of rural road pavement concrete about 18.75%.

  • The air-cooled proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) stacks, which is widely used in small-sized PEMFC, have a problem in that durability is weaker than that of the water-cooled type. Because the cathode is open to the atmosphere and the structural problem of the air-cooled stack, which is difficult to maintain airtightness, is highly likely to form a hydrogen/air boundary during start-up/shut-down (SU/SD). Through the accelerated durability evaluation of the 20 W air-cooled PEMFC stack, the purpose of this study was to find out the cause of the degradation of the stack and to contribute to the improvement of the durability of the air-cooled PEMFC stack. In this study, it was possible to evaluate durability in a relatively short time by reducing 20-30% of initial performance by repeating SU/SD 1,000 to 1,200 times on an air-cooled PEMFC stack. After disassembling the stack, each cell was divided into two and the performance analysis showed that the electrode degradation was more severe in the anode outlet membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which facilitates air inflow as a whole, than in the inlet MEA. It was shown that the cathode Pt was dissolved/precipitated to deteriorate the polymer ionomer inside the membrane.

  • Air cooled condenser for power plant is used at inland area of desert or mountainous area because condenser coolant like sea water is not necessary. However, the performance of air cooled condenser is influenced by ambient condition such as wind speed and air temperature. Therefore, various devices have been designed to improve the performance of air cooled condenser. In this study, the CFD analysis for air cooled condenser was carried out according to wind speed and wind screen configuration. As wind speed increased from 3m/s to 7m/s, the fan flow rate was reduced about 15.76% and the rise of inlet air temperature was 5.55 degree of Celsius. When the suitable wind screen is equipped, the fan flow rate went up about 5.18% and inlet air temperature dropped by 2.08 degree of Celsius in comparison with original case without wind screen at 7m/s wind speed.

  • Ammonia has been used as refrigerant for more than 100 years in absorption as well as in compression systems. Due to its poisonous and inflammable properties, however, its use has been mainly on heavy industrial plants in which regular maintenance are available. For these systems, condensers are generally water-cooled. This is suitable for large systems over 20 RT but is not suitable for small systems. In order to apply ammonia for a small system, it is important to adopt an air-cooled condenser. In this study, simple numerical analysis of an air-cooled condenser for an ammonia refrigeration system has been carried out. The condenser is designed as horizontal tubes with plate fins attached at the outer surface to enhance the air-side heat transfer rate. Effects of fin shape and arrangement are studied in detail. Since the local heat transfer coefficient is highest at the leading edge, heat flux is highest at the edge and decreases along the distance. Conditions of inlet air are also varied in the study and condenser length that is required for full condensation is calculated. The results show that it is important to enhance both the air-side and internal heat transfer coefficients.
