In a range of forms, such as latex, water-soluble polymer, liquid resin, and monomer, polymer dispersions have been widely used in the construction industry as cement modifiers because of their excellent properties, such as acid-resistance, water-proofness, and good ductility in mortar and concrete. Polymer cement slurry (polymer-modified slurry) is made of cement and polymer dispersions, with a high polymer-cement ratio of 50% or more. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the water permeability and drying shrinkage of polymer cement mortar (polymer-modified mortar) and cement concrete coated by polymer cement slurry. The polymer cement mortar and cement concrete are prepared with various polymer types, polymer-cement ratios and curing methods, and are tested for water permeability, drying shrinkage and strength. The test results showed thatthe weight of permeable water of polymer cement mortar decreases with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio, reaching a minimum at the polymer-cement ratio of 20%. In particular, the weight of permeable water of St/BA-modified mortar with a polymer-cement ratio of 20% coated with St/BA-modified slurry is about 1/55 that of unmodified mortar. The EVA- and St/BA-modified slurries coated on cement concrete have about 4 or 5 times higher drying shrinkage compared to cement concrete. The strength of polymer cement mortars tends to increase with a higher polymer-cement ratio, and is considerably higher than that of unmodified mortar. It is thus concluded that polymer cement mortars coated by polymer cement slurry are effective for industrial application, and have superior properties such as waterproofness and strengths, compared with conventional cement mortar.
Concrete has excellent mechanical properties, high durability, and economical advantages over other construction materials. Nevertheless, it is not an easy task to apply concrete to long span bridges. That's because concrete has a low strength to weight ratio. Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has a very high strength and hence it allows use of relatively small section for the same design load. Thus UHPC is a promising material to be utilized in the construction of long span bridges. However, there is a possibility of crack generation during the curing process due to the high binder ratio of UHPC and a consequent large amount of hydration heat. In this study, adiabatic temperature rise and mechanical properties were modeled for the stress analysis due to hydration heat. Adiabatic temperature rise curve of UHPC was modeled superposing 2-parameter model and S-shaped function, and the Arrhenius constant was determined using the concept of equivalent time. The results are verified by the mock-up test measuring the temperature development due to the hydration of UHPC. In addition, models for mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, tensile strength and compressive strength were developed based on the test results from conventional load test and ultrasonic pulse velocity measurement.
In this study, the adhesive strength of three commercial polycarboxylate cements to ten types of dental casting alloys, such as gold, palladium, silver, indium, copper, nickel, chromium, and human enamel and dentine were measured and compared with that of a conventional zinc phosphate cement. The $8.0mm{\times}3.0mm$ cylindrical alloy specimens were made by casting. The enamel specimens were prepared from the labial surface of human upper incisor, and the dentine specimens were prepared from the occulusal surface of the human molar respectively. Sound extracted human teeth, which had been kept in a fresh condition since, extraction, were mounted in a wax box with a cold-curing acrylic resin to expose the flattened area. The mounted teeth were then placed in a Specimen Cutter (Technicut) and were cut down under a water spray, and then the flat area on the all specimens were ground by hand with 400 and 600 grit wet silicone carbide paper. Two such specimens were then cemented together face-to-face with freshly mixed cement, and moderate finger pressure was applied to squeeze the cement to a thin and uniform film. All cemented specimens were then kept in a thermostatic humidor cabinet regulated at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C.$ and more than 95 per cent relative humidity and tested after 24 hours and 1 week. Link chain was attached to each alloy specimen to reduce the rigidity of the jig assembly, and then all the specimens were mounted in the grips of the Instron Universal Testing Machine, and a tensile load was delivered to the adhering surface at a cross head speed of 0.20 mm/min. The loads to which the specimens were subjected were recorded on a chart moving at 0.50 mm/min. The adhesive strength was determined by measuring the load when the specimen separated from the cement block and by dividing the load by the area. The test was performed in a room at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C.$ and $50{\pm}10$ per cent relative humidity. A minimum of five specimens were tested each material and those which deviated more than 15 per cent from the mean were discarded and new specimens prepared. From the experiments, the following results were obtained. 1) It was found that the adhesive strength of the polycarboxylate cement to all alloys tested was considerably greater than that of the zinc phosphate cement. 2) The adhesive strength of the polycarboxylate cements was superior to the non precious alloys, such as the copper, indium, nickel and chromium alloys, but it was inferior to the precious gold, silver and palladium alloys. 3) Surface treatment of the alloy was found to be an important factor in achieving adhesion. It appears that a polycarboxylate cement will adhere better to a smooth surface than to a rough one. This contrasts with zinc phosphate cements, where a rough helps mechanical interlocking. 4) The adhesion of the polycarboxylate cement with enamel was found superior to its adhesion with dentine.
Laminated composite materials have excellent in-plane properties, but are vulnerable in thickness directions, making it easy to delamination when bending and torsion loads are applied. Thickness directional reinforcement methods of composite materials that delay delamination include Z-pinning, Stitching, Tufting, etc., and typically Z-pinning and Stitching method are commonly used. The Z-pinning is reinforcement method by inserting metal or carbon pin in the thickness direction of prepreg, and the conventional stitching process is a method of reinforcing the mechanical properties in the thickness direction by intersecting the upper and lower fibers on the preform. In this paper, I-fiber stitching method, which complement and improve weakness of Z-pinning and Stitching method, was proposed, and the static strength of composite single-lap joints using I-fiber stitching process were evaluated. The single-lap joints were fabricated by a co-curing method using an autoclave vacuum bag process. The thickness of the composite adherend was fixed, and 5 types of specimens were manufactured with varying the stitching pattern (5×5, 7×7) and angle (0°, 45°). From the test, the failure load of the specimen reinforced by the I-fiber stitching process was increased by up to 143% compared to that of specimen without reinforcement.
Recently a new generation of crown and bridge veneering resins containing submicron glass fillers was introduced. These ultrasmall particle hybrid composite materials distinguish themselves, compared with conventional microfill crown and bridge resins, through improved mechanical properties. It is claimed that these composites are suitable for metal free crowns and even bridges using fiber reinforcement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermal cycling on the tensile strength of the following veneering composites: Artglass(Heraeus Kulzer Co., Wehrheim, Germany), Estonia(Kuraray Co.. Japan), Sculpture(Jeneric Pentron Co., Wallingford, U.S.A.), and Targis(Ivoclar Co., Schaan Liechenstein). According to manufacturer's instructions, rectangular tensile test specimens measuring $1.5{\times}2.0{\times}4.5mm$ were made using a teflon mold. Whole specimens were divided into two groups. One group was dried in a desiccator at $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, and another group was subjected to thermal cycling($10,000{\times}$) in water($5/55^{\circ}C$). All test specimens were placed in a universal testing machine and loaded until fracture with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. Weibull analysis and Tukey's test were used to analyze the data. The fracture surfaces of specimens were observed in SEM and the aliphatic C=C absorbance peak of Estenia and Targis resin was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy. Within the limitations imposed in this study, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1. Both in drying condition and thermal cycling condition, the highest tensile strength was observed in Estenia testing group(p<0.05). 2. The strength data were at to single-mode Weibull distribution, and the Weibull modulus of all veneering composite resin specimens increased after thermal cycling treatment. 3. After thermal cycling test, the highest tensile strength was observed in the Estenia group, and the lowest value was observed in the Targis group. The tensile strength values showed the significant differences between each group(p<0.05) 4. The aliphatic C=C absorbance peak of Estonia and Targis resin was decreased after light curing, and there was no distinct change after thermal cycling.
Polymer-modified mortar and concrete are prepared by mixing either a polymer or monomer in a dispersed, or liquid form with fresh cement mortar and concrete mixtures, and subsequently curing, and if necessary, the monomer contained in the mortar or concrete is polymerized in situ. Although polymers and monomers in any form such as latexes, water-soluble polymers, liquid resins, and monomers are used in cement composites such as mortar and concrete, it is very important that both cement hydration and polymer phase formation proceed well the yield a monolithic matrix phase with a network structure in which the hydrated cement phase and polymer phase interpenetrate. In the polymer-modified mortar and concrete structures, aggregates are bound by such a co-matrix phase, resulting in the superior properties of polymer-modified mortar and concrete compared to conventional mortar and concrete. The purpose of this study is to obtain the necessary basic data to develope appropriate latexes as cement modifiers, and to clarify the effects of the monomer ratios and amount of emulsifier on the properties of the polymer-modified mortars using methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate(MMA/BA) and methyl methacrylate-ethyl acrylate(MMA/EA) latexes. The results of this study are as follows, the water absorption, chloride ion penetration depth and carbonation depth of MMA/BA-modified mortar are lowest. However, they are greatly affected by the polymer-cement ratio rather than the bound MMA content and type of polymer.
3D printing technology enables proper objects to be made through an additive manufacturing method, but resulting in dimension deviation of the product due to contraction phenomenon as cooling melted filament resin injected from high-temperature use environment. In this research, we studied on acrylic adhesives for 3D printer build sheet in order to fabricate high-quality products with a precise shape and to well-mount without distortion. The solvent-free UV-curable acrylic adhesive formulation was designed by adding 4-acryloylmorpholine (ACMO) with high adhesion, toughness, glass transition temperature so that adhesion properties are stable at high temperature and products are easily mounted/detached from the adhesives. The designed formulation was polymerized through two-steps using post-addition of monomers. Using this, the acrylic adhesive was coated to make a film and then analyzed using various experimental techniques. As a result, the fabricated adhesive exhibited high glass transition temperature and there was little gap in peel strength before and after thermal treatment. Moreover, it was confirmed by rheological analysis that this adhesive can provide great bonding/debonding ability without distortion. We demonstrated the fabrication of a rectangular product using a 3D printing method using our acrylic adhesive as a build sheet. Mounting ability and workability were satisfactory and dimension deviation of the product was tiny. Because the product is easily detachable from the acrylic adhesive developed here than conventional build sheets, it is expected that this will provide work convenience to users who use the 3D printer.

Recently, the quality of drilled shafts concrete has been improved significantly due to the improved concrete performance, upgraded concrete materials, and better management of on-site constructions. Despite the development, current conventional quality management on concrete constructions is still used without any criticism. In this study, compressive strength test results of more than 200 concrete specimens after 7 and 28 days of curing were collected from one site at Songdo area of Incheon. The concrete specimens were prepared from the concrete with aggregate maximum dimensions of 25 mm, target compressive strength of 40 MPa, and slump of 180 mm. Influential factors including concrete temperature, air temperature, amount of slump, amount of air, amount of salinity on concrete specimen were also examined. The database was established from collected information and statistical analyses were performed. Analyzed results confirm that "the difference between concrete temperature and air temperature" has the largest impact on the compressive strengths of specimens at the durations of 7 and 28 days.
Long Fiber-reinforced composites have advantages of excellent production efficiency and formability of complex shapes compared to conventional continuous fiber reinforced composite materials. However, if we need to make complicated composite shapes or to assemble parts made of different materials, a variety of joining methods are needed. In general, long fiber prepreg sheet (LFPS) contains mold release agent to facilitate demolding after thermoforming. Therefore, mechanical fastening is required in addition to the adhesive bonding to get proper joining strength. In this study, we proposed a stainless steel insert for co-cure bonding which cures LFPS and bonds the stainless steel insert through thermoforming process. The wing of the insert which is spread during the thermoforming process induces adhesion and mechanical wedging effect and serves as a hook to resist the pulling force. The burn-out method was used to confirm the unfolded state of the stainless steel insert wings inserted into the composite material. The static pull-out test was performed to quantitatively evaluate the joining strength. From these experimental results, the condition which guarantees the most appropriate joining strength was derived.

In a comprehensive summary use and supplementation of some well defined natural herbal formulations in the European swine breeding and fattening is documented. Along with this data also the quality assurance, hygenic as well as the standards of efficacy of the formulations are presented. Series of experimental and development work over the last several years with universities, research institutes, veterinarians and feed industry proved that the application of such phylo-components (feed supplementation) result in to optimizing swine breeding practices. On the basis of 4 specific formulations tested and used in the European veterinary field most of the common problems of pig breeding and rearing can be successfully handled. Precisely, problems of fertility, respiration, diarrhea and stress; which are directly related to imerse losses in production, with poor quality of piglets associated with immune suppressions. Besides curing common symptoms, one of the most important aspect is of improvement in the self defence mechanism which results ultimately in to increased immunity, vitality and health of the animals; of course, thereby reducing the mortality which is the most economical problem observed in the animal health. Moreover, data presented here reflects on the fact that the use of such high quality alternative formulations successfully replace conventionally used antibiotics or hormonal therapies. They also work synergestically of as complementary in vaccination program or act as growth promoting agents on natural basis.
