The feasibility of using neural networks to model the complex relationship between piezocone measurements and the undrained shear strength of clays has been investigated. A three layered back propagation neural network model was developed based on actual undrained shear strengths, which were obtained from the isotrpoically and anisotrpoically consolidated triaxial compression test(CIUC and CAUC), and piezocone measurements compiled from various locations around the world. It was validated by comparing model predictions with measured values about new piezocone data, which were not previously employed during development of model. Performance of the neural network model was compared with conventional empirical method, direct correlation method, and theoretical method. It was found that the neural network model is not only capable of inferring a complex relationship between piezocone measurements and the undrained shear strength of clays but also gives a more precise and reliable undrained shear strength than theoretical and empirical approaches. Furthermore, neural network model has a possibility to be a generalized relationship between piezocone measurements and undrained shear strength over the various places and countries, while the present empirical correlations present the site specific relationship.
Laboratory experiments were conducted in order to find effects of the intermediate principal stress of ${\sigma}_{2}$ on rock fractures and faults. Polyaxial tests were carried out under the most generalized compressive stress conditions, in which different magnitudes of the least and intermediate principal stresses ${\sigma}_{3}$ and ${\sigma}_{2}$ were maintained constant, and the maximum stress ${\sigma}_{1}$, was increased to failure. Two crystalline rocks (Westerly granite and KTB amphibolite) exhibited similar mechanical behavior, much of which is neglected in conventional triaxial compression tests in which ${\sigma}_{2}$ = ${\sigma}_{3}$. Compressive rock failure took the form of a main shear fracture, or fault, steeply dipping in ${\sigma}_{3}$ direction with its strike aligned with ${\sigma}_{2}$ direction. Rock strength rose significantly with the magnitude of ${\sigma}_{2}$, suggesting that the commonly used Mohr-type failure criteria, which ignore the ${\sigma}_{2}$ effect, predict only the lower limit of rock strength for a given ${\sigma}_{3}$ level. The true triaxial failure criterion for each of the crystalline rocks can be expressed as the octahedral shear stress at failure as a function of the mean normal stress acting on the fault plane. It is found that the onset of dilatancy increases considerably for higher ${\sigma}_{2}$. Thus, ${\sigma}_{2}$ extends the elastic range for a given ${\sigma}_{3}$ and, hence, retards the onset of the failure process. SEM inspection of the micromechanics leading to specimen failure showed a multitude of stress-induced microcracks localized on both sides of the through-going fault. Microcracks gradually align themselves with the ${\sigma}_{1}$-${\sigma}_{2}$ plane as the magnitude of ${\sigma}_{2}$ is raised.

In general, conventional road pavements are designed under the assumption that the shear strength of geomaterials are under saturated state. In reality, however, most of the pavement geomaterials exists under the unsaturated state. To deal with this gap between saturated and unsaturated conditions, in this paper, unsaturated shear strength was estimated using the results from the triaxial compression test and soil-water characteristics curves. Then, yield loads were assessed using 2-Dimensional finite element method with the selected nonlinear elastic model and the Mohr-Coulomb yield criteria. In addition, various unsaturated condition and surface layer effects on the yield load of granular materials were identified. Therefore, the results demonstrated would provide a possibility to estimate bearing capacity of paved or unpaved roads using unsaturated soil mechanics.
Piezocone penetration testing(CPTu) results such as cone resistance$(q_c)$, sleeve friction$(f_s)$, and pore pressure(u), have been carried out at 5 sites in Honam high-speed railway areas of Korea, in order to continuously estimate the characteristics of soil layers and the undrained shear strength$(S_u)$ in a soft ground. For the applications of the conventional CPTu results to undrained shear strength, the cone factors$(N_{kt})$ were deduced based on Field vane tests, and Monte-Carlo Simulation(MCS). Moreover the correlations of the undrained shear strength of CPTu by soil depths were compared and revised with the results of triaxial compression(UU test), field vane and Dilatometer tests(DMT). The depths of soft foundation at 5 sites in Honam high-speed railway areas were calculated based on the results of the various field tests in addition CPTu. The applicability of CPTu for a soft foundation criterion referred to the criteria of high-speed railway and related agencies in Korea was evaluated.
This paper dealt with the influence of experimental error generated inevitably during performing experiments on the granular soil behaviour analysis selecting Lade's Single Work-Hardening constitutive model. Several isotropic compression-expansion tests and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests with various confining pressures for Baekma river sands were performed and the values of parameters for the above model were determined using computer program developed for this study based on regression analysis. By finding the range of the upper and lower bound for deviator stress and volumetric strain versus axial strain dependant on the increase and decrease of the standard deviation from mean value of parameters, sensitivities of all the parameters were examined. Practical use of program to determine the parameters and capability to predict the behaviour of granular soil by Lade's Single Work -Hardening model verified.
Joints or weak planes can induce anisotropy in the strength and deformability of fractured rock masses. Comprehending this anisotropic behavior is crucial to engineering geology. This study used plaster as a friction material to mold specimens with a single joint. The strength and deformability of the specimens were measured in true triaxial compression tests. The measured results were compared with three-dimensional numerical analysis based on the distinct element method, conducted under identical conditions, to assess the reliability of the modeled values. The numerical results highlight that the principal stress conditions in the field, in conjunction with joint orientations, are crucial factors to the study of the strength and deformability of fractured rock masses. The strength of a transversely isotropic rock mass derived numerically considering changes in the dip angle of the joint notably increases as the intermediate principal stress increases. This increment varies depending on the dip of the joint. Moreover, the interplay between the dip direction of the joint and the two horizontal principal stress directions dictates the strength of the transversely isotropic rock mass. For a rock mass with two joint sets, the set with the steeper dip angle governs the overall strength. If a rock bridge effect occurs owing to the limited continuity of one of the joint sets, the orientation of the set with longer continuity dominates the strength of the entire rock mass. Although conventional three-dimensional failure criteria for fractured rock masses have limited applicability in the field, supplementing them with numerical analysis proves highly beneficial.

The undrained strength of soils is open determined from the results of the piezocone penetration. The reliability of the value of the undrained strength lies on the cone factor value, whose evaluation needs a lot of experimental data and investigation for each site. In this study, the cone factors were evaluated for the northeastern part of Shiwha area in Gyunggi province using the experimental data of the field vane, unconfined compression, and UU triaxial compression tests. The values of the conventional cone factors $N_{kt}$, $N_{ke}$, $N_{{\Delta}u}$, and the new factor $N_e$ were determined to be 12, 11, 3, and 13, respectively. It was observed that there is a remarkable relationship between $N_{{\Delta}u}$ and the pore pressure ratio Bq.
Since decomposed granite soil shows various characteristics of shear behavior dependent on initial conditions such as weathering degree and grain breakage, it is nacessary to invert ligate stress -strain relationship and changes of shear characteristics for different initial conditions. Associated with abovefnentioned view, direct shear tests, and triaxial compression tutsts(Ef, CD) were carried out in this study for undisturbed and disturbed compacted weathered granite samples obtained from 4 construction work sites with the various weathering degree and components of parent rocks. The deformation behavior of undisturbed samples under small confining stress shows hardening to softening, which is similar to that of over nsolidated clay whereas disturbed weathered granite soils do hardeningfonstant regardless of weathering degree, which is also similar to sedimentary clay. Conventional direct shear-tests for undisturbed samples show a tendency to overestimate cohesion. It is possidle to approximate stress ratio(q/p') and volumetric increment ratio(dv/ds) in the triaxital compression tests by an equation, ($dv/d\varepsilon,=\alpha(M-\eta))$ irrespective of moisture content, weathering degree and disturbance.
Implementing the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion in the framework of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion requires the calculation of the equivalent friction angle and cohesion. In the conventional method based on the Balmer (1952)'s theory, the tangential instantaneous friction angle and cohesion are expressed in terms of the minimum principal stress ${\sigma}_3$, which does not provide the information about the dependency of the equivalent parameters on the hydrostatic pressure and the stress path. In this study, this defect of the conventional method has been overcome by representing the equivalent parameters in terms of stress invariants. Through the example implementation of the new method, the influence of the magnitude of the hydrostatic pressure and the Lode angle on the tangential instantaneous friction angle and cohesion is investigated. It turns out that the tangential instantaneous friction angle is maximum when the stress condition is triaxial extension, while the tangential cohesion is maximum when the stress condition is triaxial compression. The dependency of the equivalent Mohr-Coulomb strength parameters on the hydrostatic pressure and the Lode angle tends to be more substantial for the favorable rockmass of larger GSI value.
The Paper describes the observed behaviour in the undrained triaxial condition of marine clays remoulded at various different levels of factors, to find out the effects of restricted factors on the stress-strain characteristics. The conventional triaxial compression tests $({\sigma}1>{\sigma}2={\sigma}3)$ were carried out on the 50mm in diameter and 100mm long cylindrical specimens of Gun-san bay mud under controlled various moisture content, density, axial strain rate and passing on No. 200 sieve. Significant conclusions from this study are; 1. The compressible deviator stress at failure of pure marine clay was observed to increase with the decrease of moulding moisture content. 2. The compressible deviator stress at failure increased with the increasing of moulding dry density. 3. The interaction between moisture content and density on the stress-strain characteristics of marine clay was remarkedly significant, as the result of factorial experimental method. 4. The effect of axial strain rate on stress-strain behaviour was unsignificant in marine clay and but the secant moduli could be pronounced on a slight decreasing with increase of the strain rate. 5. With the increasing of the passing on No. 200 sieve, the deviator stress increased regularly. 6. The multiple regression equation could be modeled for the prediction of stress or strain and the comparison with experimental results relatively proved the accuracy.
