The aim of this paper is to design an adaptive speed control system of a marine diesel engine by fusion of hard computing based proportional integral derivative (PID) control and soft computing based fuzzy control methods. The model of a marine diesel engine is considered as a typical non oscillatory second order system. When its model and the actual marine diesel engine ate not matched, it is hard to control the speed of the marine diesel engine. Therefore, this paper proposes two methods in order to obtain the speed control characteristics of a marine diesel engine. One is an efficient method to determine the PID control parameters of the nominal model of a marine diesel engine. Second is a reference adaptive speed control method that uses a fuzzy controller and derivative operator for tracking the nominal model of the marine diesel engine. It was found that the proposed PID parameters adjustment method is better than the Ziegler & Nichols' method, and that a model reference adaptive control is superior to using only PID controller. The improved control method proposed here, could be applied to other systems when a model of a system does not match the actual system.
This paper deals with a control technique of eliminating the transient vibration of a twin-drive geared mechanical system. This technique is based on a model-based control in order to establish the damping effect at the driven machine part. The control model is composed of reduced-order electrical and mechanical parts. This control model estimates a load speed converted to the motor shaft. The difference between the estimated load speed and the motor speed is calculated dynamically and it is added to the velocity command to suppress the transient vibration generated at the load. This control technique is applied to a twin-drive geared system with backlash. In the previous work, the performance of this control method is examined by simulations. In this paper, the effectiveness of this control technique is verified by experiments. The settling time of the residual vibration generated at the loading inertia can be shortened down to about 1/2 of the uncompensated vibration level.

Model reference control is control method such that overall response of a plant plus controller approaches that of a given reference model. The reference model provides desired trajectory the plant should follow. There are many kinds of control methods in MRC. However, this paper focuses on Model Reference Sliding Mode Control. The plant of these controls is an uncertain and linear system varying in time, of second order, and with SISO. In this paper, a design scheme of reference model is proposed for MRSMC. The scheme determines reference model based on the information on bounded control inputs, reference inputs and system parameters. It is used to choose a Fixed Reference Model in the process of controller design, to update Variable Reference Model when stepwise reference inputs change and to update Instant Reference Model at every sampling time. The simulation results show that the proposed method yields better control performance than the conventional MRC subject to the stepwise reference input when applied to the position control system for motor system.

The purpose of this study is to design the intelligent speed control system for marine diesel engine by combining the Model Matching Method and the Nominal Model Tracking Method. Recently for the speed control of a diesel engine some methods using the advanced control techniques such as LQ control Fuzzy control or H$\infty$ control etc. have been reported. However most of speed controllers of a marine diesel engine developed are still using the PID control algorithm But the performance of a marine diesel engine depends highly on the parameter setting of the PID controllers. The authors proposed already a new method to tune efficiently the PID parameters by the Model Mathcing Method typically taking a marine diesel engine as a non-oscillatory second-order system. It was confirmed that the previously proposed method is superior to Ziegler & Nichols's method through simulations under the assumption that the parameters of a diesel engine are exactly known. But actually it is very difficult to find out the exact model of the diesel engine. Therefore when the model and the actual diesel engine are unmatched as an alternative to enhance the speed control characteristics this paper proposes a Model Refernce Adaptive Speed Control system of a diesel engine in which PID control system for the model of a diesel engine is adopted as the nominal model and a Fuzzy controller is adopted as the adaptive controller, And in the nominal model parameters of a diesel engine are adjusted using the Model Matching Method. it is confirmed that the proposed method gives better performance than the case of using only Model Matching Method through the analysis of the characteristics of indicial responses.

In this study a path control scheme of simulation models of various vehicles to evaluate their handling characteristic is developed. Based on the forward target method, path deviation error is estimated and the required steering effort to reduce the error is computed by Ziegler-Nichols PID control rule. Velocity control model is also included in the proposed path control scheme to achieve the desired velocity. The path control scheme is implemented on a full vehicle model to perform ISO test procedures, such as steady state cornering, lane change, and sinusoidal input, etc. Through the simulations of ISO test procedures and comparison with actual tests, effectiveness and validity of the path control model is demonstrated.

The automated mechanical transmission(AMT) is composed of electronic control management(ECM) and automatic shift gear(ASG). The AMT has advantages which are high efficiency of manual transmissions(MT) and offer operation convenience similar to automatic transmissions(AT). However, it has defects that are the torque gap during gear shift transients and shift time is long. To reduce such defects, it is necessary practically to evaluate error and characteristics as developing simulation model before the control algorithm is applied. In this paper, models are composed of vehicle model and AMT shift control model. Particularly AMT shift control model consists of main clutch management model (MCM) and shift control management model(SCM). The developed models were verified by comparing the simulated and experimental results under the same operational conditions. It can also be used to evaluate shift algorithm.

A two parameter model of a single fictitious weak acid with unknown dissociation constant has been successfully applied to design a neutralization system for many multi-component acid streams. But there are some processes for which above two parameter model is not satisfactory due to poor approxmation of the nonlinearity of pH process. Here, for etter control of wide class of multi-component acid streams, a three parameter model of a strong acid and a weak acid with unknown dissociation constant is proposed. The model approximates effectively three types of largest gain variation nonlinearities. Based on this model a nonlinear pH control system is designed. Parameters can eeasily estimated since their combinations appear linearly in the model equations and nonlinear adaptive control system may also be constructed just as with the two parameter model.

In this study, dynamic response control of a flexible wing such as gust loads alleviation using sliding mode control method is presented. To achieve this purpose, trailing edge control surface of a flexible wing is used as control means generating the aerodynamic control force. Aeroservoelastic CASE) model consisting of aeroelastic plant, control surface actuator model, and gust model depicting the atmospheric turbulence is formulated in the state space. A sliding mode controller based on the estimated state vector is designed for active dynamic response control of flexible wing aeroservoelastic model. The performance of the controller designed is demonstrated via numerical simulation for the representative flexible wing model under atmospheric turbulence loading.

In this paper a new modeling and an optimal pole-placement control for the suspension system of Macpherson type are investigated. The rotational motion of the unsprung mass is emphasized in the new modeling. The two generalized coordinates selected in the new model are the vortical displacement of sprung mass and the angular displacement of control arm. Both variables are measured from their static equilibrium points. It is shown that the conventional model is a special case of the new model since the transfer function of the new model coincides with that of the conventional one if the lower support point of the shock absorber is located at the mass center of the unsprung mass. It is also shown that the resonance frequencies of the new model agree better with experimental results. Therefore, the new model is more general in the sense that it Provides an extra degree of freedom in determining the plant model for control system design. An optimal pole-placement control which combines LQ control and pole-placement technique is applied to the new model. Simulations are provided.
