With the advent of ubiquitous environments, the smart phone has come into wide use and the demand for various content increases. Thus, in order to efficiently utilize limited resources cognitive radio technology is regarded as a possible solution. Besides spectrum sensing or access schemes, the provision of VoIP traffic service for secondary users with limited spectrum resources is a very important issue. In this paper, a resource allocation and control system for VoIP QoS provision in cognitive radio networks is proposed. Firstly, as the system model, the time structure of the network is addressed and, according to the structure, a bandwidth broker is proposed. In addition, based on available bandwidth estimated by the bandwidth broker, a connection admission control for secondary users is developed. It is demonstrated that the provision of VoIP QoS is greatly affected by channel utilization, the number of channels, and the length of timeslot.

It is aware that Bandwidth management with dramatically increasing traffic on account of frequent and large file transmission in a data grid environment is one of essential needs. A this paper we propose new method which guarantees QoS (Quality of Service) by being in control of resources in TCP layer based on existing studies that manage bandwidth over TCP buffer tuning. General QoS solutions manage network resources subsequent to observing them in IP or link layer, but the scheme in the paper is able to control network resources in TCP layer that is network upper layer. Consequently, bandwidth allocation to each user can be efficiently controlled depending on an authority each user is given so that users could be use different bandwidth. It is expected that a new paradigm is supposed in network resource management and the method of levies for users' bandwidth uses.
Adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming technology has become an important and prevalent feature in many multimedia delivery systems, with content providers such as Netflix and Amazon using ABR streaming to increase bandwidth efficiency and provide the maximum user experience when channel conditions are not ideal. Where such systems could see improvement is in the delivery of live video with a closed loop cognitive control of video encoding. In this paper, we present streaming camera system which provides spatially and temporally adaptive video streams, learning the user's preferences in order to make intelligent scaling decisions. The system employs a hardware based H.264/AVC encoder for video compression. The encoding parameters can be configured by the user or by the cognitive system on behalf of the user when the bandwidth changes. A cognitive video client developed in this study learns the user's preferences (i.e. video size over frame rate) over time and intelligently adapts encoding parameters when the channel conditions change. It has been demonstrated that the cognitive decision system developed has the ability to control video bandwidth by altering the spatial and temporal resolution, as well as the ability to make scaling decisions

Video-on-demand system in which users can request any video through the network at any time is made possible by rapid increase in network bandwidth and capacity of the media server. However true video-on-demand system cannot support all requests since bandwidth requirement is still too demanding. Therefore efficient bandwidth reduction algorithm is necessary. both the piggybacking method and the batching method are novel solutions that can provide more logical number of streams than the physical system can support. Of course each of them has its pros and cons. hence piggybacking with batching-by-size can take advantage of both the schemes. Some parameters such as the size of batch and the size of the catch-up window should be adjusted and order to maximize the bandwidth reduction for piggybacking with batching-by-size method. One of the most important parameters is decided optimally in this paper. Simulation shows that the optimized parameter can achieve considerable reductionand consequently remarkable enhancement in performance.

We propose a soft QoS-based borrowing scheme for call admission control(CAC) in DVB-RCS(Digital Video Broadcast-Return Channel via Satellite). Some of the ongoing calls temporarily and fairly release bandwidths that can be used to accommodate a new call in an overloaded satellite network. The amount of bandwidth borrowed from each call is proportional to each user's critical bandwidth ratio, one of parameters for soft QoS mechanism. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the system performance in terms of call blocking probability and bandwidth utilization.
A plethora of transmission control protocol (TCP) congestion control algorithms have been devoted to achieving the ultimate goal of high link utilization and fair bandwidth sharing in high bandwidth-delay product (HBDP) networks. We present a new insight into the TCP congestion control problem; in particular an end-to-end delay-based approach for an HBDP network. Our main focus is to design an end-to-end mechanism that can achieve the goal without the assistance of any network feedback. Without a router's aid in notifying the network load factor of a bottleneck link, we utilize goodput and throughput values in order to estimate the load factor. The obtained load factor affects the congestion window adjustment. The new protocol, which is called TCP-goodput and throughput (GT), adopts the carefully designed inversely-proportional increase multiplicative decrease window control policy. Our protocol is stable and efficient regardless of the link capacity, the number of flows, and the round-trip delay. Simulation results show that TCP-GT achieves high utilization, good fairness, small standing queue size, and no packet loss in an HBDP environment.

Recently, the high-speed Internet users increase rapidly and broadband networks have been widely deployed. However, the current TCP congestion control algorithm was designed for relatively narrowband network environments, and thus its performance is inefficient for traffic transport in broadband networks. To remedy this problem, the TCP having an enhanced congestion control algorithm is required for broadband networks. In this paper, we propose an improved TCP congestion control that can sufficiently utilize the large available bandwidth in broadband networks. The proposed algorithm predicts the available bandwidth by using ACK information and RTT variation, and prevents large packet losses by adjusting congestion window size appropriately. Also, it can rapidly utilize the large available bandwidth by enhancing the legacy TCP algorithm in congestion avoidance phase. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we use the ns-2 simulator. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm improves not only the utilization of the available bandwidth but also RTT fairness and the fairness between contending TCP flows better than the HSTCP in high bandwidth delay product network environment.
HTTP adaptive streaming is a technique that improves the quality of experience by storing various quality videos on the server and requesting files of the appropriate quality based on network bandwidth. However, it is difficult to measure the actual bandwidth in wireless networks with frequent bandwidth changes and high loss rate. Frequent quality changes and playback interruptions due to bandwidth measurement errors degrade the quality of experience. We propose a technique to estimate the available bandwidth by measuring the jitter, which is the derivation of delay, on a packet basis and assigning a weight according to jitter. The proposed scheme reduces the number of quality changes and mitigates the buffer underflow by reflecting less bandwidth change when high jitter occurs due to rapid bandwidth change. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme improves the quality of experience by mitigating buffer underflow and reducing the number of quality changes in wireless networks.

A high assurance IP encryption (HAIPE) compliant protocol accelerator is proposed for military networks consisting of red (or classified) networks and black (or unclassified) networks. The boundary between red and black sides is assumed to be protected via a HAIPE device. However, the IP layer encryption introduces challenges for bandwidth on demand satellite communication. The problems experienced by transmission control protocol (TCP) over satellites are well understood: While standard modems (on the black side) employ TCP performance enhancing proxy (PEP) which has been shown to work well, the HAIPE encryption of TCP headers renders the onboard modem's PEP ineffective. This is attributed to the fact that under the bandwidth-on-demand environment, PEP must use traditional TCP mechanisms such as slow start to probe for the available bandwidth of the link (which eliminates the usefulness of the PEP). Most implementations recommend disabling the PEP when a HAIPE device is used. In this paper, we propose a novel solution, namely broadband HAIPE-embeddable satellite communications terminal (BHeST), which utilizes dynamic network performance enhancement algorithms for high latency bandwidth-on-demand satellite links protected by HAIPE. By moving the PEP into the red network and exploiting the explicit congestion notification bypass mechanism allowed by the latest HAIPE standard, we have been able to regain PEP's desired network enhancement that was lost due to HAIPE encryption (even though the idea of deploying PEP at the modem side is not new). Our BHeST solution employs direct video broadcast-return channel service (DVB-RCS), an open standard as a means of providing bandwidth-on-demand satellite links. Another issue we address is the estimation of current satellite bandwidth allocated to a remote terminal which is not available in DVBRCS. Simulation results show that the improvement of our solution over FIX PEP is significant and could reach up to 100%. The improvement over the original TCP is even more (up to 500% for certain configurations).
Wide-bandwidth SQUID current amplifier and its control electronics have been constructed for detecting pulse outputs of a superconducting microcalorimeter. The current amplifier made of a double relaxation oscillation SQUID (DROS) has a bandwidth of 1.2 MHz and typical white noise level of about 6 pA/(equation omitted) Hz. To increase the dynamic range of the current amplifier, the flux-locked loop (FLL) has additional circuits to reset the integrator and to count reset numbers which present the number of passed flux quanta. In this system, dynamic range covers from -65 mA to +65 mA. SQUID electronics are controlled by software to get the optimum FLL condition, and to control the current to bias the transition edge sensor (TES). The electronics are shielded from the outside electromagnetic noises by using an aluminum case of 66 mm ${\times}$ 25 mm ${\times}$ 100 mm, and consist of 2 separate printed-circuit-boards for the current amplifier and the control electronics, respectively. The SQUID current amplifier and its control electronics will be used in TESs for detecting photons such as UV and X-ray with high energy resolution.
