The information on flowpath, storage, residence time, and interactions of water and carbon transport in a catchment is the prerequisite to the understanding and predicting of water and carbon cycling in the mountainous landscapes of Korea. In this paper, along with some up-to-date results, we present the principal methods that are currently used in HydroKorea and CarboKorea research to obtain such information. Various catchment hydrological processes have been examined on the basis of the water table fluctuations, the end-member mixing model, the cross correlation analysis, and cosmogenic radioactive isotope activity. In the Gwangneung catchment, the contribution of surface discharge was relatively large, and the changes in the amount, intensity and patterns of precipitation affected both the flowpath and the mean residence time of water. Particularly during the summer monsoon, changes in precipitation patterns and hydrological processes in the catchment influenced the carbon cycle such that the persistent precipitation increased the discharge of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrated in the surface soil layer. The improved understanding of the hydrological processes presented in this report will enable a more realistic assessment of the effects of climate changes on the water resource management and on the carbon cycling in forest catchments.

Electrical conductivities of $ZrO_2-Sm_2O_3$ systems containing 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mol% of $ZrO_2$ have been measured as a function of temperature and of oxygen partial pressure at temperature from 500 to 1000${\circ}C$ and oxygen partial pressures from 1 ${\times}10^{-5}to 1{\times}10^{-1}$ atm. Plots of log conductivity vs. 1/T are found to be linear with an inflection point at around 650$^{\circ}C$ and the temperature dependence of conductivity shows two different defect structures. The conductivities are increased with increasing pressure, slowing a p-type character. The electrical conductivity dependences on $Po_2$ are found to be ${\sigma}{\propto}Po_2^{1/5.3}$ at 650∼1000$^{\circ}C$ and ${\sigma}{\propto}Po_2^{1/6}$ at 500∼650$^{\circ}C$, respectively, The defect structures are Oi" at 650-1000$^{\circ}C$ and $Vs_m$"' at 500-650$^{\circ}C$. The electron hole is main carrier type, however ionic contribution is found at low temperature portion. Ionic contributions increased with the increasing amount of $ZrO_2$ dopant. In 60mol% $ZrO_2-Sm_2O_3$ system, the conductivity is increased with decreasing oxygen pressure.
Presently, the reuse of waste FCC catalysts, which generated from the refining process of crack oil, after the removal of con-taminated metallic impurities have not been attempted domestically yet because the separation technology f3r the impurities from waste catalysts has not been established. As a basic study far the reusable portion from the waste FCC catalysts and treatment of metallic impurities are assured, there will be invoked an significant contribution not only in the recycling of abandoned wastes up to date but also in the treatment efficiency of wastes and extraction of economical benefits from them. The magnetic separation of impurities such as Fe, Ni, and V, from waste FCC catalyst has been attempted with or without its pre-oxidation at high temperature for the purpose of its reuse. The results showed that the separability of impurities by magnetic force was high far non-preoxidized catalysts compared with preoxidized ones, and employment of screen-type matrix showed a higher separation efficiency than ball-type matrix. The separability increased with the strength of magnetic field, and the method of ball matrix has separation efficiency of maximum 51.10%. The amount of metallic impurities was in the decreasing order of V, Ni, and Fe depending upon ICP analysis.
This study examines the relationship between R&D spending and patent rights, which are suggested by firms as a way to increase their firm value. Specifically, we examine the relationship between research and development costs and patent rights, and see if there are any differences in the influence of two variables on firm value. The period of this study is from 2005 to 2016, and the sample of companies used in the research including the patenting companies is composed of 333 companies in total. The results of the study are as follows. First, the cost of R&D expenditure and capitalized R&D expenditure showed a significant positive correlation with patents. Second, R&D spending did not show a significant relationship with firm value, but patent rights showed a significant positive correlation with firm value. However, firms that spend a large amount of R&D expenditure (RDD), such as research and development expenses, showed a significant positive (+) value and a patent dummy (PATD). Third, in the analysis of the difference between the dummy of research and development and the patent dummy, the enterprise value of a company that invested a lot of patents and research and development expenses was high. The contribution of this study is to examine the relevance of corporate value to R&D investment for patents. On the other hand, there are various variables that can be used as a sample of patents.
Shingal reservoir is a relatively small (211ha) and shallow impoundment, and approximately 25 ha of its sediment is exposed after spring drawdown. At least 14 vascular p13n1 species germinate on the exposed sediment, but Persimria vulgaris Webb et Moq. quickly dominates the vegetation. In order to estimate the role of the vegetation in the dynamics of heavy metal pollutants in the reservoir, Cu concentration of water, fallout particles, exposed sediment, and tissues of p. vulgaris, Ivas analyzed. Cu content in reservoir water decreased from $13.10mg/m^2$ on May 15 (before dralvdown) to $3.08mg/m^2$ in June 1 (after drawdown), mainly due to the loiwering of water level. Average atmospheric deposition of Cu by fallout particles was $10.84 {\mu}g/m^2/day$. Cu content in the surface 15cm of exposed sediment decreased from $5.094g1m^2$ right after drawdown, to $0.530g/m^2$ in 41 days, which is a 89.6% decrease. Therefore up to 99.7% of Cu in the reservoir appears to exist in the sediment. only 0.3% in water If the rate of atmospheric Input by fallout particles is assumed to have been the same since 1958, when the reservoir was completed, cumulative input of Cu during the 38 years would have been $150.35mg/m^2$, which is only 3.0% of Cu content in sediment right after drawdown. Therefore, most of Cu in the Shingal reservoir must have been transported by the Shingal-chun flowing into the reservoir, Standing crop of vegetation on the exposed sediment 41 days after drawdown was $730.67g/m^2$, of which 630.91g/m2 was p. vulgaris alone, and Cu content in P vulgaris at this time was $6.612mg/m^2$. This was only 0.13% of Cu in the exposed sediment, but was 50.5% of Cu in water before drawdown, or 167% of the average annual input of Cu by atmospheric deposition. If other plants were assumed to absorb Cu to the same concentration as p. vulgaris, total amount of Cu absorbed in 41 days by vegetation on the exposed sediment is estimated to be 1913.3 g, which is a considerable contribution to the purification of the reservoir water.
We examined water flux, concentrations and contents in nutrients in precipitation, throughfall, stemflow and soil solution in natural deciduous hardwood forest(Quercus variabilis and Q. mongolica) in Chunchon, Kangwon Province. The volume of throughfall was 2∼3% higher in Q. variabilis than in Q. monglica while volume of stemflow, Ao, A and B soil solution was 10∼15% higher in Q. variabilis compared to Q. monglica. Concentrations of K/sup +/ increased in throughfall H while concentrations of Ca/sup 2+/, Mg/sup 2+/ and NO₃/sup -/ increased in Ao soil solution. The former might be related to the canopy leaching and the latter related to leaching and nitrification in Ao horizon. Nutrient concentrations in throughfall, Ao, A and B soil solution decreased with increasing amount of water and especially the decreases in concentrations of K/sup +/, Mg/sup 2+/ and Cl/sup -/ were significant. Nutrient concentrations of Ca/sup 2+/ in Ao soil solution was 1.5 times higher in Q. variabilis than in Q. mongolica. However, there were no significant nutrient concentration differences in throughfall, stemflow and A and B soil solution between the two forest types. Stemflow was less than 10% of total water volume (throughfall + stemflow) to the forest floor, and contribution of stemflow to nutrient cycling seemed to be low in the study forest.
This paper analyzes the effectiveness of social networks in finding jobs and estimates the value of job search network using the Korean Laber and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) dataset and utilizing the Difference-in-Difference Propensity Score Matching (PSM) methodology (Heckman et al., 1997). While the wide use of social networks in the Korean labor market is often perceived as 'nepotism,' this study confirms that social networks, by serving as an effective information transmitter between job search and recruitment, make a significant contribution to improving the adequacy of job matching in the domestic labor market. In order to verify the effectiveness of using social networks for getting jobs, this study looks into the cases of labor turnover using social networks and also not using it. In the aspect of individual satisfaction improvement relating to workplace and job duties, both cases of turnover turn out to experience an increased satisfaction by 2~3 points (on a 100-score scale). Meanwhile, as for the educational and technical adequacy improvement, no positive effects are found in the case of turnover without social networks, whereas the educational and technical adequacy improvement turns out to increase by 2.13 and 2.52 points, respectively, in the case of turnover using social networks. The effect of income increase through turnover using social networks registered 40,074 Korean won per month (as of 2010), which can be considered as the result from the improved educational and technical adequacy. Of all things being considered, the value of job search network per wage worker in the Korean society is estimated to be 18.72 million won in terms of life-cycle wage improvement, and 758.2 scores in terms of the improvement of working life satisfaction. Provided that the cash value of satisfaction score 1 is equivalent to 'n' times 10,000 won, the aggregate value of job search network is estimated to be 18.72+7.582n million won, which means the total amount of costs that a wage worker in the Korean society willingly pays to maintain and manage job networks for lifetime.

This paper describes an analytical study on seismic performance of domestic reinforced concrete (RC) school building not designed by seismic provision. The seismic index and the seismic performance of the building were evaluated through Japanese standard and Midas Gen, respectively. Seismic index (Is) of the RC school buildings in the X-direction is below 0.4. Based on the seismic index, for seismic-strengthening the building, infill shear wall or steel brace with a capacity of 1,300 kN was used. According to nonlinear static analysis results, the contribution of the seismic-strengthening to the shear resistance of the school building was measured to be greater than 30%. However, as expected, shear strength of school building strengthened with infill wall dropt rapidly after peak load and much narrower ductile behavior range was observed compared to steel brace strengthened building. Also, the building strengthened with steel brace showed 30% larger spectral displacement than that strengthened with infill shear wall. In nonlinear dynamic analysis, for the time history analysis, the maximum displacement showed tendency to decrease as amount of reinforcement increased, regardless of strengthening method. It was recommended that variable soil properties and earthquake record should be considered for improving seismic performance of buildings in seismic zone.
