  • In metal cutting various types of chips are produced in consequence of cutting conditions. According to the type of chips the cutting mechanism is to be changed. Most of the cutting theory is based on the continuous chip because of its convenient analysis, but the occurrence of the saw-toothed chip depends upon the workpiece and/or the cutting conditions, one of which is titanium alloy used widely. Nowadays titanium alloys are used widely with the rapid development of aerospace structural engineering application, whereas the theory of cutting mechanism has not been established yet, and the formatting process has not been understood satisfactorily, either. Unfortunately several misconceptions, conflicting statements and statements needing further clarifi- cation are also found. In this paper an attempt is made to clarify the formation process of saw-toothed chips which are to be produced during the orthogonal cutting process of titanium alloys. They were machined at low speed to avoid the rapid tool wear. We observed the SEM-photographs of chips taken at the quick-st- opping device. It is hoped that a rational model of the mechanics of cyclic chip formation can be developed. The results obtained are as follows. 1. When a saw- toothed chip is formed, the shear band begins at the primary shear zone and trans- fers to the free surface, so that a segment is produced and it is completed by upsetting between the formatting segment and the formatted segment. 2. As the rake angle or the clearance angle increases in the machining of the titanium alloy, the chip approaches to that of the continous type. 3. When the rake angle and the clearance angle are increased the shear energy and the unit friction energy decrease, which shows the same aspect as that of the continuous chip.

  • An air-to-ground guidance missile aimed to hit a main battle tank(MBT) should detect a ground moving target and estimate the target position to guide. In this paper, we detect a front ground moving target by using FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) and estimate the position by forward-looking SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) via scanning certain front ground section by steering a beam with narrow beamwidth left to right mechanically. Also, by MLE(Maximum Likelihood Estimation), degree of how fast the target approach or recede from the radar can be figured out from the estimated radial velocity of the moving target. Subsequently, we generate a radar image via corrected matched filter from phase history including the radial velocity.

  • In this paper, we present the design of a 20MHz bandwidth 3rd-order continuous-time low-pass sigma-delta modulator with low-noise and low-power consumption. The bandwidth of the system is sufficient to accommodate LTE and other wireless network standards. The 3rd-order low-pass filter with feed-forward architecture achieves the low-power consumption as well as the low complexity. The system uses 3bit flash quantizer to provide fast data conversion. The current-steering DAC achieves low-power and improved sensitivity without additional circuitries. Cross-coupled transistors are adopted to reduce the current glitches. The proposed system achieves a peak SNDR of 65.9dB with 20MHz bandwidth and power consumption of 32.65mW. The in-band IM3 is simulated to be 69dBc with 600mVp-p two tone input tones. The circuit is designed in a 0.18-um CMOS technology and is driven by 500MHz sampling rate signal.

  • We performed seismic noise level analysis to access the proper functioning of 11 newly established seismic stations in the southeastern region of Korea. One-hour long segments of seismograms were selected from the continuous data of the 3 elements for 61 days from March 1, 2019. For each segment of data, the power spectral density (PSD) was estimated from the continuous back ground noise data of the 3 elements for periods ranging from 0.02~100 s. The median noise levels (NLs) of the stations were compared with the new noise model (NNM) of USGS and NLs of station TJN installed in a tunnel on a granite basement. We observed that the NLs of the newly installed seismometers were between the upper and lower limit of the NNM. In a comparison with the noise level of station TJN, the new seismometers had their own noteworthy features. The NLs from accelerometers (Epi-sensors) were ~ 40 dB higher than the NLs from velocimeters (STS-sensors) for periods > 10 s, which is because the small and light Epi-sensors are sensitive to environmental changes. Daily and weekly variations in spectral noise level were observed clearly in short periods < 1 s, and these are considered to be related to human activities. The seismometers in boreholes showed ~20 dB weaker NLs in the cultural noise band. The NLs of accelerometers at a depth of 30 m were also much lower by 30 dB for long periods > 10 sec. Overall the functioning of the new velocimeter and accelerometer stations was reliable for periods ranging from 0.02~100 s and 0.02~10 s, respectively.

  • The human voice is a convenient method of information transfer between different objects such as between men, men and machine, between machines. The development of information and communication technology, the voice has been able to transfer farther than before. The way to communicate, it is to convert the voice to another form, transmit it, and then reconvert it back to sound. In such a communication process, a vocoder is a method of converting and re-converting a voice and sound. The CELP (Code-Excited Linear Prediction) type vocoder, one of the voice codecs, is adapted as a standard codec since it provides high quality sound even though its transmission speed is relatively low. The EVRC (Enhanced Variable Rate CODEC) and QCELP (Qualcomm Code-Excited Linear Prediction), variable bit rate vocoders, are used for mobile phones in 3G environment. For the real-time implementation of a vocoder, the reduction of sound quality is a typical problem. To improve the sound quality, that is important to know the size and shape of noise. In the existing sound quality improvement method, the voice activated is detected or used, or statistical methods are used by the large mount of data. However, there is a disadvantage in that no noise can be detected, when there is a continuous signal or when a change in noise is large. This paper focused on finding a better way to decrease the reduction of sound quality in lower bit transmission environments. Based on simulation results, this study proposed a preprocessor application that estimates the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) using the spectral SNR estimation method. The SNR estimation method adopted the IMBE (Improved Multi-Band Excitation) instead of using the SNR, which is a continuous speech signal. Finally, this application improves the quality of the vocoder by enhancing sound quality adaptively.

  • Zr-based amorphous alloy matrix composites reinforced with metallic continuous fibers were fabricated by liquid pressing process, and their fracture properties were investigated by directly observing microfracture process using an in situ loading stage installed inside a scanning electron microscope chamber. About 60 vol.% of metallic fibers were homogeneously distributed inside the amorphous matrix. Apparent fracture toughness of the stainless-steel- and tungsten-fiber-reinforced composites was lower than that of monolithic amorphous alloy, while that of the Ta-fiber-reinforced composite was higher. According to the microfracture observation, shear bands or cracks were initiated at the amorphous matrix, and the propagation of the initiated shear bands or cracks was effectively blocked by fibers, thereby resulting in stable crack growth which could be confirmed by the fracture resistance curve (R-curve) behavior. This increase in fracture resistance with increasing crack length improved fracture properties of the fiber-reinforced composites, and could be explained by mechanisms of formation of multiple shear bands or multiple cracks at the amorphous matrix and blocking of crack or shear band propagation and multiple necking at metallic fibers.

  • In this paper spectral characteristics and spectral patterns of pine wilt disease at different development stage were analyzed in Geoje-do where the disease has already spread. Ground-based hyperspectral imaging containing hundreds of wavelength band is feasible with continuous screening and monitoring of disease symptoms during pathogenesis. The research is based on an hyperspectral imaging of trees from infection phase to witherer phase using a ground based hyperspectral camera within the area of pine wilt disease outbreaks in Geojedo for the analysis of pine wilt disease. Hyperspectral imaging through hundreds of wavelength band is feasible with a ground based hyperspectral camera. In this research, we carried out wavelength band change analysis on trees from infection phase to witherer phase using ground based hyperspectral camera and comparative analysis with major vegetation indices such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Red Edge Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (reNDVI), Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI) and Anthocyanin Reflectance Index 2 (ARI2). As a result, NDVI and reNDVI were analyzed to be effective for infection tree detection. The 688 nm section, in which withered trees and healthy trees reflected the most distinctions, was applied to reNDVI to judge the applicability of the section. According to the analysis result, the vegetation index applied including 688 nm showed the biggest change range by infection progress.

  • In this study, the influence of wetting band depth by continuous rainfall and the magnitude of wetting front suction on the stability of slopes in weathered soils were investigated by using finite element programs SEEP/W and SLOPE/W. Three different intensities of rainfall (10mm/hr, 30mm/hr, 50mm/hr) were chosen, and the total duration of rainfall was 96 hours. Three infinite slopes with the inclination of 1:1.5 and 1:1.8, 1:2.0 were considered and the typical properties and the shear strength parameters of the weathered soil were applied. It is shown that rainfall duration plays an important role in slope stability. Based on the analytical results, it is found that as the rainfall duration increases, the wetting band depth also increases. Also, the increasing rate of the wetting band depth was decreased as the soil density was increased. These results come from the decrease of the coefficient of permeability and the increase of the soil suction. Finally, it is also shown that the safety factors of slopes by unsaturated analysis are mostly larger than those by saturated analysis. Therefore, commonly used saturated analysis may substantially underestimate the degree of safety factor in realistic situations.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) are investigated by means of the unidentified infrared (UIR) bands. Continuous near- to mid-infrared spectra of PNe are obtained with the AKARI/IRC and the Spitzer/IRS. All 19 PNe in the present study show prominent dust emissions and we investigate the variation in the intensity ratios among the UIR bands. The ionization fraction and the size distribution of PAHs in PNe are derived using the UIR band ratios. We find that the ionization fraction of PAHs in PNe is around 0.0-0.6 and that small PAHs are scarce. The present result indicates a systematic trend of the $3.4{\mu}m$ aliphatic feature to become weak as the PAH ionization fraction increases.

  • Generally, arterial pulse waves are measured at the radial arterial of wrist or carotid arterial of neck using a sensor such as pressure sensor, piezoelectric sensor or optic sensor. But in this paper, arterial pulse wave is measured at the temple using PZT piezo sensor which is attached on the temple in form of a hair-band. Arterial Pulse waves are generally measured when a reagent is in a static state. But in this paper, we implemented the arterial pulse wave measurement system, as a previous stage of the arterial pulse wave measurement system for running at outdoors or on a running machine, that measures arterial pulse waves at the temple, which is the least moving part when running. Thorough the continuous study, if the motion artifact when running is possible to be removed, the system will be able to perform monitoring of running men's states and especially emergency signals such as serious pulse waves of an/old and feeble persons and handicapped persons.
