  • In ubiquitous computing that is to build computing environments to provide proper services according to user's context, human being's emotion recognition based on facial expression is used as essential means of HCI in order to make man-machine interaction more efficient and to do user's context-awareness. This paper addresses a problem of rigidly basic emotion recognition in context-sensitive facial expressions through a new Bayesian classifier. The task for emotion recognition of facial expressions consists of two steps, where the extraction step of facial feature is based on a color-histogram method and the classification step employs a new Bayesian teaming algorithm in performing efficient training and test. New context-sensitive Bayesian learning algorithm of EADF(Extended Assumed-Density Filtering) is proposed to recognize more exact emotions as it utilizes different classifier complexities for different contexts. Experimental results show an expression classification accuracy of over 91% on the test database and achieve the error rate of 10.6% by modeling facial expression as hidden context.

  • JVET (Joint Video Exploration Team) which explored evolving technologies of video coding with capabilities beyond HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), released a references software codec named the Joint Exploration Model (JEM) for performance verification of coding technologies. JEM has 67 intra prediction modes that extend the 35 modes of HEVC for intra prediction. Therefore, the enhancement of the coding performance is limited due to the overhead of prediction mode coding. In this paper, we analyze the probabilities of prediction modes selections, and then we propose a more efficient intra prediction mode coding based on the results of analyzed mode occurrence. In addition, we propose a context modeling for CABAC (Context-Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding) of the proposed mode coding. Experimental results show that the BD-rate gain is 0.02% on the AI (All Intra) coding structure compared to JEM 7.0. We need to optimize context modeling for additional coding performance enhancement.

  • For the accurate creation of annotation information in a free-form annotation environment, the ambiguity that arises in the analysis stage between the geometric information and annotations needs to be resolved. Therefore, this This paper identifies, analyzes, and proposes presents solutions methods for the ambiguity that can occur between free-form marking and various contexts in XML-based annotation environment. The proposed method is based on context which includes various textual and structure information between free-form marking and annotated part. The proposed method show that the annotated portions areas included in the free-form marking information are more accurate, achieving more accurate exchange results amongst multiple users in a heterogeneous document environment. This study can be effectively applied to eLearning, Cyber-Class, and IETM

  • In this paper, a novel visual tracking method which can utilize the context of object regions is presented. Conventional methods have the inherent problem of treating all candidate regions independently, where the tracker could not successfully discriminate regions with similar appearances. This was due to lack of contextual modeling in a given scene, where all candidate object regions should be taken into consideration when choosing a single region. The goal of the proposed method is to encourage feature exchange between candidate regions to improve the discriminability between similar regions. It improves upon conventional methods that only consider a single region, and is implemented by employing the MLP-Mixer model for enhanced feature exchange between regions. By implementing channel-wise, inter-region interaction operation between candidate features, contextual information of regions can be embedded into the individual feature representations. To evaluate the performance of the proposed tracker, the large-scale LaSOT dataset is used, and the experimental results show a competitive AUC performance of 0.560 while running at a real-time speed of 65 fps.

  • Highly detailed geometric models are rapidly becoming commonplace in computer graphics and other applications. These complex models, which is often represented as complex1 triangle meshes, mainly suffer from the vast memory requirement for real-time manipulation of arbitrary geometric shapes without loss of data. Various techniques have been devised to challenge these problems in views of geometric processing, not a representation scheme. This paper proposes the new mesh structure for the compact representation and the efficient handling of the highly complex models. To verify the compactness and the efficiency, the memory requirement of our representation is first investigated and compared with other existing representations. And then we analyze the time complexity of our data structure by the most critical operation, that is, the enumeration of the so-called one-ring neighborhood of a vertex. Finally, we evaluate some elementary modeling functions such as mesh smoothing, simplification, and subdivision, which is to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our mesh structure in the context of the geometric modeling and processing.

  • In this paper, we present a systematic approach to translating BPML(Business Process Modeling Language) into the ${\pi}-Calculus$. BPML is an executable business process modeling language, like BPEL4WS(Business Process Execution Language for Web Services). It is difficult to find a systematic approach to formalizing these languages; but, by formalizing them, the behavior of the processes can be analyzed and compared so that optimal processes can be designed. For this formalization, we analyzed the activity types and contexts of BPML and suggested the definitions of semantics for each type and context by using the ${\pi}-Calculus$. In addition, we have shown the usefulness of our formalization scheme in that a typical order fulfillment process represented in BPML can be translated into the ${\pi}-Calculus$.

  • This paper describes on the Korean continuous speech recognition system for flight reservation. It adopts a frame-synchronous One-Pass DP search algorithm driven by syntactic constraints of context free grammar(CFG). For recognition, 48 phoneme-like units(PLU) were defined and used as basic units for acoustic modeling of Korean. This modeling was conducted using a HMM technique, where each model has 4-states 3-continuous output probability distributions and 3-discrete-duration distributions. Language modeling by CFG was also applied to the task domain of flight reservation, which consisted of 346 words and 422 rewriting rules. In the tests, the sentence recognition rate of 62.6% was obtained after speaker adaptation.

  • A hybrid knowledge model which amalgamates an object-oriented modeling approach and logic programming implementation is presented for structural health monitoring and diagnosis of instrumented structures. Domain knowledge in structural monitoring and diagnosis is formalized and represented in a logic-based object-oriented modeling environment. The model and environment have been implemented and illustrated in the context of a laboratory case study of damage detection in a successively damaged steel structure.

  • School closures during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have been outlined in studies from different disciplines, including economics, sociology, mathematical modeling, epidemiology, and public health. In this review, we discuss the implications of school closures in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic. Modeling studies of the effects of school closures, largely derived from the pandemic influenza model, on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 produced conflicting results. Earlier studies assessed the risk of school reopening by modeling transmission across schools and communities; however, it remains unclear whether the risk is due to increased transmission in adults or children. The empirical findings of the impact of school closures on COVID-19 outbreaks suggest no clear effect, likely because of heterogeneity in community infection pressure, differences in school closure strategies, or the use of multiple interventions. The benefits of school closings are unclear and not readily quantifiable; however, they must be weighed against the potential high social costs, which can also negatively affect the health of this generation.

  • This study focused on the increase in refugee-related discourse in Korean society with the recent inflow of asylum seekers to Jeju Island. The purpose of our study was to understand the trends in public opinion concerning the acceptance of refugees by analyzing the content of refugee-related video commentary on YouTube. Topic modeling was conducted to analyze the main points, context, and ideas in the comments. The results indicated that the media mainly focus on the pros and cons of refugees, restricting the refugee issue to the problem of acceptance with a narrow focus on the case of Jeju Island. Refugee acceptance was treated as overwhelmingly unacceptable in the comments. We found that commenters often used negative discourse in the comments as a device for reproducing and amplifying hate speech.
