  • This research investigated the connection between science textbook contents in Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and those in Republic of Korea (ROK). Both text books in the field of earth science were analyzed and classified into 70 categories based on the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Comparison was specifically made between the elementary and middle school text books of both countries; the result are as follows: First, the scope and the level of the textbooks' contents are quite different between DPRK and ROK. Text books in the South are much limited in concepts and terms than those in the North. In contrast, textbooks in DPRK are written mainly to explain concepts. Second, there are many common contents of the textbooks in DPRK and Republic of Korea. The level and scope of the contents in Republic of Korea are more inquisitive, quantitative and detailed than those in DPRK. Third, we found content connections in science textbooks between primary and secondary schools in both countries: 27 items (38.5%) are related in ROK and 19 items (27.1%) in DPRK.

  • This study is focused on the main concepts of gravity and geomagnetics which are introduced in the earth science textbooks of high school in 7th curriculum. This study examines the validity and accuracy of the Earth Science textbooks and shows some effective teaching plans by using the latest materials. This study also illustrates the main concepts of gravity and geomagnetics through presenting some effective and practical teaching-learning methods. The results of the study were as follows: First of all, a number of main concepts of six textbooks of high school were selected; the field of gravity, the direction and dimension of gravity, the measurement of gravity, the main reason of gravity anomaly and geoid, earth terrestrial magnetic field, secular variation of goemagnetics. Secondly, most Earth Science textbooks of high school explains the main concepts of the gravity and geomagnetics in similar ways. Those textbooks, however, don't put an emphasis on the essential contents which has been regarded as important thing in terms of the current educational course of study. The high school textbooks also use the material which is too old-fashioned and has some problems of accuracy and validity. Especially, many main concepts of the textbooks and scientific data(such as the direction of gravity, the measurement of gravity, the main reason of gravity anomaly, the use of geoid, secular variation) are different with those of South Korea, In addition, some materials(graphs and diagrams) are very old ones and they don't have authentic information. Finally, Among the various main concepts, some important ideas (the direction of the gravity and the method of measuring gravity, the measurement and use of gravity anomaly, the definition of geoid and secular variation of geomagnetics) should be corrected by showing the latest and authentic materials.

  • To consider the vertical variations of sedimentary environments and geochemical characters in the core sediments in Naju-Yeongam area od the lower part of Yeongsan River, grain-size and metal components of the sediments were analyzed. The sediments are pebble to mud and show fining upward. The core sediments are poorly to very poorly sorted and positively skewed. On the basis of grain size distributions, the sediments of the study areas were thought to have been deposited in a meandering stream. The metallic contents of sediments were presumably controlled by carbonate contents of sediments and weakly controlled by fining upward grain size distribution pattern. Enrichment factors indicating metal concentration in the sediments did not suggest any meaningful concentrations for metallic elements.

  • This study has developed the earth science class model based on flipped learning and analyzed the effects of that model at the elementary pre-teachers' science classes. The model of this study, the material which was consists of all contents and information about classes was offered to learners before science class as a substitute for preceding homework at general flipped learning. In science class, the knowledges which were recorded in materials were explained directly to learners by instructor for 20minutes. So the learners resolved some inquiry questions in materials through mutual debate collaboration with learners in small group. After inquiry questions' resolving, the learner among small group makes a presentation in front of the whole class. At the same time, the instructor evaluated learning action of all small groups' learners during the classes as process evaluation. The final evaluation results of semester were obtained scores of the small group in 14 classes and the achievements of individual portfolio as final exam. The learners were very positive perception to this science class model, why it is helped to concentrate on the class, extended debating and thinking ability. Consequently, the class model of this study is useful to applicate the earth science classes.

  • In this study, the scientific description of Earth was analyzed by targeting the item titled '1. Introduction to the Earth World', which is part of the 'first section' of SeoYuGyeonMun(西遊見聞) written by Yu Giljun(俞吉濬). This part served as an introduction to the entirety of SeoYuGyeonMun. It was also one of the earliest documents in Korean literature to mention 'the earth as a celestial body', rather than solely focusing on it as land which was a departure from traditional thinking. Yu Giljun made deliberate efforts to translate the concept of Earth's rotation into "Jashinjeon(自身轉)" and Neptune as "Haeryongseong(海龍星)". He included the latest scientific debates and facts in SeoYuGyeonMun, such as the theories of Western scholars explaining the types of seismic waves and discussions at international conferences related to the establishment of the original meridian. Yu Giljun, who was not a science major, would have used HunMongGungRiDoHae(訓蒙窮理図解, 1868) written by Fukuzawa(福澤諭吉) and GeokmulJiji(格物地誌, 1876) which was translated by Matsumoto(松本駒次郎) as references to describe scientific descriptions. The contents described in 'Introduction to the Earth World' cover the foundational composition and subject matter that are typically found in modern-day Earth science textbooks.

  • The opinion, that the history of science should be introduced to science lesson, has been continuously emphasized by a group of people who supported the needs of science and scientific process, nature of science, and the interaction between science and society. When the importance of the integrated science education is emphasized, the history of science is suggested as an effective curriculum for it. To respond to this identified interest, we developed a lesson of the history of science by selecting the contents of the history of science as subject topics of the integrated science and by utilizing the findings of previous studies related to the history of science in science educations. To develop the history of science class as a subject of integrated science, we chose 'the age of the earth' as a unit. After the pilot test of the unit in secondary school students, the possibility of offering the lesson as a regular course was examined with analysis of the students' reactions showing its effectiveness.

  • In order to discuss the differences among the SMP(Surface Moisture Availability Parameter), by previous researchers on the basis of their own theoretical and empirical background, we assessed the SMP according to the soil types and volumetric soil water contents. The results are as follows. There are differences among all the five SMAPs. There''s a tendency that the larger grain size, the higher value of parameters. And they divided into two groups for their value: one group has parameters with exponential function and the other with cosine and linear function. The maximum difference between the two groups appears when the volumetric soil water contents are 0.07$m^3m^{-3}$ for sand, 0.l1$m^3m^{-3}$ for loam, 0.12 for clay, and 0.13$m^3m^{-3}$ for silt loam. So, these differences must be considered when we estimate the surface evaporation rate. From field data, the paddy field soil around Junam reservoir is classified as a silt has high wetness, 0.56. So, the parameter obtained from the field measurement is much higher than that of Clapp and Hornberger(1978)''s Table. This study treated the SMP for a certain point of time in winter season. But if we measured the soil water contents continuously, we could obtain better time-dependent parameter.

  • The importance of pedagogical content knowledge(PCK) has been recognized in learning science teaching. PCK is based partly on the essence of subject matter knowledges. Therefore, the effective teaching of science content knowledges is fundamental in preservice education of student teachers. But, particularly the science curriculum of primary teachers' colleges is composed of less lessons than needed. This research was executed to identify the content and context of earth science which were contained in questions by student teachers These questions which were written by the students about the earth science content in elementary science texts and teachers' guide books were collected and analyzed. Frequency and context concentration of questions about the themes of contents were obtained. In each unit of the text books, scatter diagrams of question frequency and context concentration of themes showed various features. The main results were as follows. first, in case of the units which contents ate composed of themes expected to be experienced in everyday life, the question frequency and context concentration showed positive correlation between them. But, other units, which everyday life experiences are not expected to influence, did not show distinct correlation.
