  • A method is proposed for determining chromium content in the carbon steel pipes of a nuclear power plant (NPP) to evaluate wall thinning caused by flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC). A flat file was used to obtain filings samples. To assess sampling quality, a disk form of SRM 1227 was ground with the flat file, and the amount of Cr in the filings was determined by ICP-AES. The content of chromium in the filings of SRM 1227 was estimated as six times higher than the certified value due to the contamination of chromium in the file. To eliminate chromium contamination from the file, it was coated with WC-12Co using high-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) spraying systems. After obtaining filings samples using the coated file, Cr content in four types of disk-form SRMs was determined by ICP-AES. The recoveries of Cr in the disk-form SRMs were in the range of 95.4-102.6%, with relative standard deviations from 0.43 to 3.0%. The Cr contents in the filings collected from the used outlet headers of the nuclear power plants using the flat file coated were in the range of 0.11-0.19%.

  • This study investigates influence of organic fiber reinforced materials, affecting crack reduction of cement mortar using low grade natural sand(LNS). According to the test, for the properties of fresh mortar, the mortar using natural sand(NS) exhibited that flow value increased until adding most of fiber less than 1$\%$, except for Polyvinly alchol fiber(PVA), and then it decreased. Meanwhile, the mortar mixed with LNS showed that increase of fiber content decrease flow value, regardless of fiber type. Air content increased in the mortar adding nylon fiber(NY) and polypropylene fiber(PP), while it maintained or decreased in the mortar adding cellulose fiber(CL) and PVA. Compressive strength of the mortar does not affect during early age, but mortar using NS and adding 0.1$\%$ of fiber content increased the value, except for PP, at 28 age days, while the mortar mixed with LNS decreased. For the properties of tensile strength, mortar, using NS and adding individually PP and PVA, exhibited higher value. Especially 0.1$\%$ of NY provided the highest value. In addition, the mortar mixed with LNS resulted in improved tensile value as fiber content increased. It is demonstrated that mortar using LNS led to higher length change ratio than natural sand.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a 3D DMFC model for modeling gas evolution and flow patterns to design optimal flow field for gas management. The gas management on the anode side is an important issue in DMFC design and it greatly influences the performance of the fuel cell. The flow field is tightly related to gas management and distribution. Since experiment for the optimal design of various flow fields is difficult and expensive due to high bipolar plate cost, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is implemented to solve the problem. A two-fluid model was developed for CFD based flow field design. The CFD analysis is used to visualize and to analyze the flow pattern and to reduce the number of experiments. Case studies of typical flow field designs such as serpentine, zigzag, parallel and semi-serpentine type illustrate applications of the model. This study presents simulation results of velocity, pressure, methanol mole fraction and gas content distribution. The suggested model is verified to be useful for the optimal flow field design.

  • Purpose: In Korea, wheat is dried using circulating cross-flow grain dryers. However, there is no research on wheat drying which can be utilized for the dryers. Therefore, this study developed and evaluated a simulation of the circulating cross-flow dryer, and examined the effects of various factors on drying performance. Methods: The simulation program was developed using drying models and was evaluated against wheat-drying experiments with a dryer having a 30-ton capacity. The influence of drying temperature, air volume, and grain falling rate on drying performance were examined through the simulation. Results: The experimental results validated the simulation program by showing the same root mean square error (RMSE) for moisture content (0.286%) and drying rate (0.056%/h) in both the experimental data and the simulation values. The appropriate wheat-drying parameter values, considering drying conditions, were determined to be $50^{\circ}C$ for drying temperature, $500m^3/min$ for air volume, and a grain falling rate of $36.0m^3/h$. Conclusions: The developed simulation program for circulating cross-flow dryers analyzed the influences of performance factors such as drying temperature, air volume, and falling rate on drying performance.

  • Recently, a new concept for nitrogen removal that is simultaneous nitrification and denitrification(SND) has been studied for wastewater treatment process. The DMR(Daiho Microbic Revolution) process that used in this study consists of two suspended anoxic, anaerobic reactors and an aerobic biofilm reactor. The function of aerobic environment and the intensity of air flow rate(2.0, 1.0, 0.5, 0.4, 0.2 L/min) were studied in the biofilm reactor; also SND and nutrient removal efficiencies were investigated. Experimental results indicated that the change in air flow did not affect COD$_{Cr}$ removal significantly. Thus sustained at 93%. The lower the air flow rate, the higher T-N removal efficiency was attained(i.e.80% at 0.2 L/min). SND efficiency was 62, 65, 72 and 78% corresponding to each air flow rate. T-P removal was sensitive to aeration intensity and removal enhanced from 75% to 96% when the air flow rate was changed from 2.0 to 0.5 L/m; however second release occured in the clarifier at 0.2 L/min. Phosphorus content of activated sludge was 5.0%, as P releases and acetate uptake a ratio of 0.75 mg P/ mg HAc.

  • The effects of the simultaneous variations of the ratio of feed gases(H2/N2 Flow ratio), feed gas flow rate (H2/N2, total-flow rate) and partial pressures of TiCl4 (PTiCl41) as well as deposition time and cobalt content of the substrate on the deposition rate of the TiN Coated Cemented Tungsten Carbide Tools were investigated. Deposition was carried out in the temperature range of 930$^{\circ}C$-1080$^{\circ}C$ and an activation energy of 46.5 Kcal/mole can be calculated. Transverse rupture strength was noticeably reduced by the TiN coating on the virgin surfa-ce of Cemented Tungsten Carbide, the extent of which was decreased according to the coa-ting thickness. Microhardness value observed on the work was in the range of 1700∼2000kg/mm, which were in well agreement with the value of bult TiN. The wear resistance of TiN layers was performed by turning test and it was observed that crater and flank resistance remarkably enhanced by TiN coating.

  • In resin transfer molding (RTM), resin is forced to flow through the fiber perform of inhomogeneous permeability. This inhomogeneity is responsible for the mismatch of resin velocity within and between the fiber tows. The capillary pressure of the fiber tows exacerbates the spatial variation of the resin velocity. The resulting microscopic perturbations of resin velocity at the flow front allow numerous air voids to form. In this study, a mathematical model was developed to predict the formation and migration of micro-voids during resin transfer molding. A transport equation was employed to account for the migration of voids between fiber tows. Incorporating the proposed model into a resin flow simulator, the volumetric content of micro-voids in the preform could be obtained during the simulation of resin impregnation.

  • Numerical analysis for the combustion flow in the combustion chamber of incineration system has been carried out in order to acquire the basic design capability of incineration system. Established mathematical model was applied to the performance prediction of the pre-designed combustion chamber of commercial plant. Especially, combustion characteristics and the variation of flow pattern have been deeply discussed in accordance with secondary air injection. Secondary air injection was effective for the turbulent mixing between air and carbon monoxide/volatile matter resulting in considerably reduced CO content at the exit. Secondary air injection was found to be one of the key design parameters because the size of recirculation zone could be changed with the variation of injection characteristics.

  • In this study, several rheological properties of binder pastes and concrete are investigated for the development of commercially available fly ash super-flowing concrete. Fly ash contents with 5 leves(0, 10, 20, 30, 40%), slag contents with 6 levels(0, 5, 15, 25, 35, 45%), and water-binder ratios with 4 levels(30, 33, 36, 39%) are selected for test variables to evaluate the super-flowing characteristics of binder pastes. For the estimation of the workability of super-flowing concrete, slump flow, funnel time, box height, and L-flow are measured and compared. As the results, the flow is decreased and the viscosity is increased with increasing fly ash content. Super-flowing concrete is succesfully produced with 30% fly ash replacement.

  • A computer simulation model for rice circulating concurrent-flow dryer was developed and verified by conduction a series of pilot-scale experiment. The effects of design parameter and operating conditions on dryer performance were analyzed by using simulation. The results indicated that the developed model was found suitable for analyzing operating characteristics. The other results from simulation also showed that; 1) an increse in the initial moisture content resulted in an increase in the drying rate and a reduction in the grain temperature and total energy requirements. 2) an increase in the drying air temperature resulted in an increase in the drying rate and grain temperature. 3) an increase in air flow rate resulted in an radical increase in drying rate, fan power requirements and total energy requirements but an radical decrease in final head rice yield. 4) an increase in the bed depth resulted in an increase in fan power requirements and a lowering of the final head rice yield.
