  • This Paper examines theoretical terrains and design strategies of landscape urbanism which is an emerging hybrid field at the intersection of architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism. Landscape urbanism offers alternative approaches for theory, education, and practice in contemporary landscape architecture. It views the emergent urban complex sites-post-industrial sites, landfill, brownfield, urban void, etc., not as a weakness, but as a strength. Landscape urbanism poses an understanding of landscape as an element of urban infrastructure. In this sense, the landscape is seen in the context of contemporary urban development and public works. As a complex amalgam, landscape urbanism is more than a design style it is an ethos, an attitude, a way of thinking and acting. We can chart the main characteristics of landscape urbanism such as horizontality and surface, infrastructure, process, technique, and ecology. Multilayered examples of landscape urbanism can be seen in several experimental practices such as worts of Rem Koolhaas, MVRDV, Adriaan Geuze/West 8, James Comer, etc. It is possible to summarize the productive strategies for landscape urbanism as follows : thickening, folding, new materials, nonprogrammed use, impermanence, and movement.

  • This article analyzed how contemporary urbanism is revealed in the digital game (2016) with the contemporary city as a setting. The city in the game is a precisely directed space, so the experience of the user in the space has a special meaning. It's because the urbanism implied in player's game experience. Urbanism is properties of the city constructed between citizen's everyday life and space. Of course, it as the self of the city is influenced by cultural tradition and modern infrastructure. Therefore, contemporary cities inherit the modernity that is standard and norm, and at the same time, it can be unique space caused by network system installed around the city. In this context, contemporary citizenry accepts the urbanism as matter of course but try to surpass the modern limits and imprisonment of the network. This challenge reveals as resistance, creativity, and amusement in the relation in contemporary urbanism. Hacking and parkour are the representative examples of resistance, creativity and amusement acts of the citizen in the virtual and non-virtual environment. A protagonist in the game is a hacker and also traceur who resist modern network power. The playable character does the hacking and parkour striding the city. And these acts melt into the worldview, interface, and visualization to represent contemporary urbanism. In this regard, hacking and parkour performed by the player character are interfaced in different ways, giving the user a creative urban experience of the city in the game. In addition, the game's high-angle view of the hacked CCTV and the low-angle view of the small device show contemporary people's play on the city. This way, city people represented in are not different from contemporary fläneur who actively practice. Consequently, the city as the space in the game contents are not just settings, but one of the important axes that implies the message of the contents.

  • A city evolves over time. It grows, transforms, and sometimes degrades. Chuncheon is at a turning point from a city souggling with regulations regarding clean water supply and a military encampment to a masterpiece city with a sustainable vision. The city is getting ready to restructure itself to become a world-famous culture and tourism complex expanding its physical boundary across the Camp Page site and absorbing Jungdo as a major tourist attraction. The landscape in the future blueprint of Chuncheon will play a great role in restructuring urban form. The regenerated in will have a new networked open space system as well as re-evaluated landscape resources. The hybrid theoretical practice called 'landscape urbanism' burgeoning in the fields between 'landscape architecture' and 'urbanism' can guide us in considering the terms of the relationship between a city and landscape when we design a future city Landscape urbanism is considered to be an effective framework by which we can diagnose the current status of a landscape in our contemporary urban design practice in Korea. This paper tries to provide a different perspective from the viewpoint of landscape urbanism to decipher the hidden implications of the social agreement on the role of landscape in urban structure by re-reading eight design proposals presented for the ChunCheon G5 international design competition based on the main principles of landscape urbanism. The G5 design competition is a great opportunity to test out new ideas on a city, demonstrating the relative values among various urban-design professional realms. First, this paper provides an overview of the main ideas of landscape urbanism based on the literature review and case studies. Second, framework categories are suggested in order to extract the explicit and implicit ideas on the landscape. Third, eight proposals are reviewed according to the suggested categories to situate the current landscape design of Korea within the mainstream of contemporary practice of landscape urbanism. Based on the review of eight proposals, the following diagnostic conclusions are made; first, the ideas of landscape urbanism have not been actively introduced in large-scaled urban landscape projects in Korea like Chuncheon G5. Second, it remains to be a big task for landscape professions to be able to participate in design consortiums on an equal footing. Third, In order to introduce and reify the ideas of landscape urbanism in Korea, it is inevitable and critical to test the ideas in both academic fields and professional practices to find the appropriately adjusted model of landscape urbanism.

  • The Practice of Landscape Urbanism has been criticized on two aspects; Landscape Urbanism does not yet provide differentiated forms of planning and design neither able to fill the gap between theory and practice. In response to these criticisms, Landscape Urbanists have tried to provide additional cases that can exemplify achievements of Landscape Urbanism in practice. There has been another type of effort to suggest distinct planning and design strategies of Landscape Urbanism from theoretical texts. However, these approaches overlooked the fact that professional practice actually gave huge influence on the theoretical framework of Landscape Urbanism. Based on this observation, the study examined the development process of Landscape Urbanism by verifying the correlation between its practice and theory. Through an extensive literature review, the study suggested horizontality, infrastructure, process, ecology, media, hybrid, site, and scale as eight major concepts of Landscape Urbanism. Afterwards, the study classified 51 projects cited in major essays and articles of Landscape Urbanism into four categories: Archetypal projects, precedent projects, exemplary projects, and progressive projects. The correlation between strategies of the selected projects and main theoretical concepts was analyzed. The study found out that the early stage of the theory was focused on defining and explaining the new design and planning approaches of contemporary design projects related with landscape. However, these days, Landscape Urbanism became a more productive in providing diverse types of practice sharing the direction and vision proposed by the theory. Various projects influenced in constructing theoretical structure of Landscape Urbanism as well as proved that the suggestions of Landscape Urbanism could be effective to reorganize contemporary cites in the form of design and planning strategies. The observation of this study can contribute to provide proper answers to the criticism on practice of Landscape Urbanism and be helpful in understanding the limits and unrealized potentials of Landscape Urbanism as a practical theory.

  • Since the late 20th century, post-modern society has needed new styles in environmental design. The land art begun during that time supplied the momentum for the birth of the hybrid environmental design. The new design approach, focusing on land form and landscaping begun with land-form architecture, raised a powerful current of hybridization in the environmental design genres. The new picturesque landscape design distinguished by manipulated land forms and sublimated aesthetics appeared under the influence of land art and land-form architecture. Similarly, landscape urbanism was formed by the fusion of landscape architecture and urbanism. Therefore, the representative hybrid styles in environmental design appear as new picturesque landscape design, land-form architecture and landscape urbanism. With the new, strong interest in land and landscape, this same new interest was given to 'time' on account of the dynamics and indeterminacy of urban society. This new interest in land and time gave rise to new hybrid methodologies for environmental design such as mapping, diagramming and folding. These three tools have been applied most comprehensively in landscape urbanism. The 'fold' is the most popular design tool for most of the hybrid genres. The 'diagram' is the second-most popular design tool mostly for landscape urbanism and land-form architecture. Mapping is being actively applied to landscape urbanism and passively applied in new picturesque landscape design. In general, landscape urbanism seems to be a timely and suitable alternative for contemporary urban society. It displays very high potentials in the regeneration of the locality through the comprehensive hybrid methodology. It is necessary to actively engage in and develop landscape urbanism fit the local needs.

  • This study tries to feel out the possibility of experimental areas of architecture which is becoming urbanization gradually through practical issues of landscape urbanism. According to this study, it is affirmed that the practical issues of landscape urbanism such as process in time, Potential territoriality of surface, practical methodology and socio-cultural imagination already have rome into the architectural area over urbanism. This is presented as characteristics of detail issues through relational density on the matrix of landscape urbanism, traces of the general landscape concepts and architectural landscapeconcepts. As a result, these practical issues and detail architectural strategies constitute the important spatial characteristics of contemporary architecture.

  • The planning of traditional urban has to face great challenges under the influence of the uncertainty and mobility of contemporary cities. While for this kind of challenge, it has brought the chance to develop Landscape Urbanism quickly. As an important practice place for Landscape Urbanism, open space provides a platform for many landscape designers to display. The purpose of this research is to explore the expression of the core content of Landscape Urbanism in open space, and propose the design tendency of open space in Korea. According to the constitution elements of urban open space and the core concept of Landscape Urbanism, this thesis establishes the analysis framework, which carries out the case empirical analysis for the open space of New York. Through case analysis, we can see that there are five major characteristics of Landscape Urbanism. That is, the integration or imitation of natural terrain, green infrastructure construction, emphasizing ecological resilience, adaptability to unplanned events, and analyzing the site from multiple scales. In this research, the design proposal proposed on the basis of Landscape Urbanism is able to provide enlightenment for the urban open space design of Korea in the future.

  • Informational urbanism is a new research area in information science. In this study, art history joins informational urbanism: Are digital artworks in public urban spaces recognized as essential assets of a smart city? We employed case study research, working with the example of the huge digital media façade of the Arthouse Graz as an artwork in a public space. In a mixed-methods approach, we asked passers-by and interviewed experts on Graz as a smart city and on the Arthouse's role concerning the image of Graz as a smart city. The research found strong hints that indeed digital artworks with large screens or media façades at public spaces are parts of a city's weak location factors as well as of the city's urban structure and may symbolize the city's smartness. A practical implication of this finding is that artists, computer and information scientists, city planners, and architects should include interactive contemporary digital art into city spaces in order to demonstrate the city's way towards knowledge society.

  • While tall buildings are an essential building type to accommodate an ever-growing urban population, as buildings become taller and taller, many design challenges arise. As floor spaces are repeated vertically, the occupants' natural horizontal circulation-based social interactions are limited. As buildings become ever taller, safe evacuation to the ground level becomes more challenging in emergencies. With respect to safety as well as serviceability, one of the most fundamental design challenges of exceedingly tall buildings is their structural systems that make the physical existence of tall buildings possible. While many different design solutions can be sought to resolve these issues as well as other design challenges of extremely tall buildings, this paper investigates the potential of conjoined towers to create more livable and sustainable vertical environments. Emphasis is placed on the social and structural capabilities of conjoined towers in providing enhanced social interactions and more efficient ultra-tall structures. The related brief history of conjoined towers is presented. To understand their current status, contemporary design practices of conjoined towers are discussed. Lastly, a new concept of superframed conjoined towers developed for exceedingly tall building complexes is introduced through design studies. Though envisioning future tall buildings is challenging, conjoined towers can be among the strong candidates toward more livable and sustainable vertical urbanism.

  • Most of the architecture is constructed in cities. Urbanism or network, occurring in contemporary society, has changed the concept of space. For this reason, many architects now focus on the changes of the relationship between architecture and cities and the changes of modern life styles. Therefore, it is necessary for architecture, not to mention architects, to find out new design methods that are able to respond to the changes. This study starts form the thought that MVRDV, the group of architects in the Netherlands, makes a design in the process, connected with contemporary society, cities, informations, and techniques. The purpose of this study is that bring to light the MVRDV's way to design, datascape, as a new design method.
