  • The importance of efficient container transportation becomes more significant each year due to the constant growth of the global marketplace, and studies focusing on shipping efficiency are becoming increasingly important. In this paper, we propose an approach for vehicle scheduling that decreases the number of vehicles required for freight commerce by analyzing and scheduling optimal routes. Container transportation can be classified into round and single-trip transportation, and each vehicle can be linked in a specific order based on the vehicle state after completing an order. We develop a mathematical model to determine the required number of vehicles with optimal routing, and a heuristic algorithm to perform vehicle scheduling for many orders in a significantly shorter duration. Finally, we tested some numerical examples and compared the developed model and the heuristic algorithm. We also developed a decision support system that can schedule vehicles based on the heuristic algorithm.

  • The forecast of a container traffic has been very important for port plan and development Generally, statistic methods, such as regression analysis, ARIMA, have been much used for traffic forecasting. Recent research activities in forecasting with artificial neural networks(ANNs) suggest tint ANNs am be a promising alternative to the traditional linear methods. In this paper, a hybrid methodology that combines both ARIMA and ANN models is proposed to take advantage of the unique strength of ARIMA and ANN models in linear and nonlinear modeling. The results with port traffic data indicate tint effectiveness can differ according to the ch1racteristics of ports.

  • Recently according to increase of enlarged scale ports in conformity with increase in over size vessels and container handling service, pollutants generated from ports are increasing. In advanced countries, reduction in carbon dioxide emission assigned to them has been implemented according to the Climate Change Convention and Kyoto Protocol from 2008 to 2012 in order to lessen carbon dioxide emission. Henceforth increase in discussion on the measure of constructing Green Port and low-carbon port is expected in our nation's field of port as well, it is considered that the effort in reduction with regard to undesirable output which causes environmental problem of analysis target during measuring effectiveness. Therefore, in this study, effectiveness was estimated through directional technology distance function considering undesirable output differently from effectiveness analysis of existing container terminal, and then performed comparative analysis with the result analyzed with BCC output-oriented model. As the result of analysis, in 2007 DMU3 and DMU5, and in 2010 DMU2 and DMU4 appeared to be efficient terminals in BCC output oriented model, and in directional technology distance function model, DMU1, DMU3 in 2007, DMU3, DMU5 in 2008, DMU7 in 2009, and DMU2, DMU5 in 2010 appeared to be efficient terminals.

  • Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the key factors influencing congestion in the in-out transportation at port container terminals, and to design of a predictive model for in-out congestion based on these analysis. This study focused on architecting a deep learning-based predictive model. Design/methodology/approach This study was conducted through the following methodology. First, hypotheses were established and data were analyzed to examine the impact of vessel schedules and external truck schedules on in-out transportation. Next, explored time series forecasting models to a design the architecture for deep learning-based predictive model. Findings According to the empirical analysis results, this study confirmed that vessel schedules significantly affect in-out transportation. Specifically, the volume of transportation increases as the vessel arrival/departure time and the cargo cutoff time approach. Additionally, significant congestion patterns in transportation volume depending on the day of the week and the time of day were observed.

  • Recently, the development of an evaluation method with operational rules have become issues for efficient planning and operations of container terminals. Container terminals are required to have enough berths and container yards as well as various equipments and facilities, but in reality there are many differences in their resources owing to the circumstances of each terminal. This study introduces a simulation model to evaluate various operation rules for teaching and training in class. This paper can analyze various factors (e.g. throughputs, yard and berth occupancies, etc.) and shows operational alternatives considering design factors of a container terminal with the related circumstances of each terminal.

  • In view of the great disparity between forecasts of Shanghai port container handling capacity and its real results, we choose a dynamic forecast method by the causality model dynamic compensation to predict Shanghai port container handling capacity. And we forecast Shanghai port container handling capacity by using this method. We have made a satisfactory achievement, which provides a more reliable and practical way to forecast container handling capacity.

  • This study evaluates the radioactivity of concrete waste that occurs due to large amounts of decommissioned nuclear wastes and then determines the surface dose rate when the waste is packaged in a disposal container. The radiation assessment was conducted under the presumption that impurities included in the bio-shielded concrete contain the highest amount of radioactivity among all the concrete wastes. Neutron flux was applied using the simplified model approach in a sample containing the most Co and Eu impurities, and a maximum of 9.8×104 Bq·g-1 60Co and 2.63×105 Bq·g-1 152Eu was determined. Subsequently, the surface dose rate of the container was measured assuming that the bio-shield concrete waste would be packaged in a newly developed disposal container. Results showed that most of the concrete wastes with a depth of 20 cm or higher from the concrete surface was found to have less than 1.8 mSv·hr-1 in the surface dose of the new-type disposal container. Hence, when bio-shielded concrete wastes, having the highest radioactivity, is disposed in the new disposal container, it satisfies the limit of the surface dose rate (i.e., 2 mSv·hr-1) as per global standards.

  • This paper introduces a container loading problem and proposes a theoretical approach that efficiently solves it. The problem is to determine a proper weight of products loaded on a container that is delivered by third party logistics (3PL) providers. When the company pre-loads products into a container, typically one or two days in advance of its delivery date, various truck weights of 3PL providers and unpredictability of the randomness make it difficult for the company to meet the total weight regulation. Such a randomness is mainly due to physical difference of trucks, fuel level, and personalized equipment/belongings, etc. This paper provides a theoretical methodology that uses historical shipping data to deal with the randomness. The problem is formulated as a stochastic optimization where the truck randomness is reflected by a theoretical distribution. The data analytics solution of the problem is derived, which can be easily applied in practice. Experiments using practical data reveal that the suggested approach results in a significant cost reduction, compared to a simple average heuristic method. This study provides new aspects of the container loading problem and the efficient solving approach, which can be widely applied in diverse industries using 3PL providers.

  • This paper presents the measurement of efficiency for container ports. Data envelopment analysis(DEA), as it is called, has particular applicability in the service sector. Applying mathematical programming techniques, DEA enables relative efficiency ratings to be derived within a set of analysed units. This paper investigates the efficiency employing DEA Model on data for 53 container ports covering 1995-2001 in the world and the change in efficiency for 7 years. As a results, port of Busan was evaluated as inefficiency port compare with major ports of the world except 1995year and 1996year. But After 1997year, efficiency of Busan port is increasing somewhat better every year.

  • As a basic study for enhancing the sensitivity of the follow-up system of the marine gyrocompass, the geometric characteristics of the deflection sensor were investigated and the theoretical model of it was formulated. The output signal voltage of the deflection sensor was esamined by changing the attitude of gyrosphere against follow-up container. The characteristics of the output are found to be indentical with those of the distance difference versus the relative azimuthal deflection of the gyrosphere against the follow up container. On the base of the theoretical model, some useful points for the design of the deflection sensor are suggested as following : 1. When the difference between semidiamter of gyrophere and that of the follow-up container decreases, the sensitivity of deflection sensor increases. 2. If the semidiameter difference of two spheres is constant, the sensitivity of deflection sensor is proportional to the magnitude of the semidiamter of each sphere. 3. The farther the gyrosphere is deviated from the center of follow-up container, the higher the sensitivity of deflection sensor is. 4. It is recommendable that the value of the datum deflection of the electrodes on the gyrosphere should be within the range between $4^{\circ}$ and $16^{\circ}$deviated from north-south line.
