  • The copolymerization of triacetoxyvinylsilane, EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a cross-linker), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methyl methacrylate), MA (methacrylic acid) was performed in the presence of AIBN (2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile) as an initiator. Measurement of the physical properties of the resulting copolymers showed that water content, refractive index, visible ray transmittance, and tensile strength were in the range of 35.63~32.44%, 1.4382~1.4480, 89.0~92.5% and 0.346~0.674 kgf, respectively. The values of tensile strength of copolymers-containing hexamethylene diisocyanate were higher than those of the copolymers containing triacetoxyvinylsilane. From the results we came to the conclusion that the produced copolymers are suitable for the application of ophthalmic contact lens with high tensile strength, wettability and duraility.

  • Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogels modified with various co-monomers, such as N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), and glycerol monomethacrylate (GMMA), were prepared to investigate the effect of adding a co-monomer on the water contents, surface wettability, and tensile modulus. These polymers were synthesized by thermal- and photo-polymerization in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)-phosphineoxide (TPO) as the initiators. The characteristics of the hydrogels were analyzed via FTIR and UV/Vis spectroscopies, contact angle measurements, and tensile modulus measurements with UTM. Regarding the properties of water in the hydrogels, the ratio between free to bound water was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effects of adding the co-monomers on the water content, surface wettability, and tensile modulus for soft contact lenses were also investigated. In the case of p(HEMA-co-NVP) hydrogels, the increase in the equilibrium water content (EWC) was primarily due to the increase in the bound water content. For p(HEMA-co-GMMA) hydrogels, an increase in free water content was the main reason for the increased EWC. In contrast, in the case of p(HEMA-co-GMA) hydrogels, a decrease in bound water content was observed to be the main factor that reduced the EWC. Photo-polymerized PHEMA hydrogels showed enhanced surface wettability and tensile modulus as compared to those produced via thermal polymerization.

  • Recently, nanoparticles of gold and silver has been applied to various fields due to antimicrobial property. This study added Ag and Au nanoparticles in HEMA (2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate), NVP (N-vinyl pyrrolidone) and MMA (methylmethacrylate) and copolymerized the solution by heating at $70^{\circ}C$ for 40 minutes, $80^{\circ}C$ for 40 minutes, and finally, $100^{\circ}C$ for 40 minutes. Using the polymer produced through the copolymerization process, and measured the physical characteristics which showed water content of 28.43% ~ 35.27%, refractive index of 1.429 ~ 1.440, visible transmittance of 79.2% ~ 86.5% and tensile strength of 0.125 kgf ~ 0.201 kgf. We judged that we made the copolymer with antimicrobial and physical properties which is suitable for conventional contact lens.

  • Three Acanthamoeba isolates (KA/E9, KA/E17, and KA/E23) from patients with keratitis were identified as Acanthamoeba triangularis by analysis of their molecular characteristics, a species not previously recognized to be a corneal pathogen. Epidemiologic significance of A. triangularis as a keratopathogen in Korea has been discussed. Morphologic features of Acanthamoeba cysts were examined under a microscope with differential interference contrast (DIC) optics. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of the ocular isolates KA/E9, KA/E17, and KA/E23 were digested with restriction enzymes, and the restriction patterns were compared with those of reference strains. Complete nuclear 188 and mitochondrial (mt) 16S rDNA sequences were subjected to phylogenetic analysis and species identification. mtDNA RFLP of 3 isolates showed very similar patterns to those of SH621, the type strain of A. triangularis. 16S and 18S rDNA sequence analysis confirmed 3 isolates to be A. triangularis. 18S rDNA sequence differences of the isolates were 1.3% to 1.6% and those of 16S rDNA, 0.4% to 0.9% from A. triangularis SH621. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report, confirmed by 18S and 16S rDNA sequence analysis, of keratitis caused by A. triangularis of which the type strain was isolated from human feces. Six isolates of A. triangularis had been reported from contaminated contact lens cases in southeastern Korea.

  • Laser surface polishing is a polishing method for improving surface roughness using an integrated laser beam. Using a laser for surface polishing can improve the surface condition without physical contact or chemical action. Laser polishing has mainly been used to polish the surface of diamond or optical articles, such as lenses and glasses. Recently, diverse studies on laser polishing for metals have been conducted. The analytic study of laser surface polishing has been conducted with experimental trials for comparison, so that the proper conditions for laser polishing can be recommended. In this study, laser surface polishing was simulated in order to predict the heat-affected zone on the die steel depending on the power of the pulsed laser. The simulated results were verified by comparing them to those of the experimental trials. Through this study, therefore, the application of FEM to the selection of appropriate laser conditions could be possible.

  • Recently Moire and PMP(Phase Measuring Profilometry) are adopted as a practical methodology for non-contact 3-D measurement of free surface. These methods extract the 3-D informations from the images of the object projected with stripe-pattern light. This paper presents a simple projector generating stripe-pattern light using expensive polygon mirror. In this projector, slit-beam is generated with a Laser diode and a rod lens and the laser diode is switched on/off synchronizing with the rotation of the polygon mirror. So its structure is very simple and light-weighted compared to the existent projection methods using several lenses and it is also easy to change the pitch and the phase of the stripe pattern. Experimental results show that the intensity profile of the stripe pattern can be approximated with sinusoidal curve by reducing the pitch of the stripe pattern.

  • Ultrastructure of stemmata(larval eye) of 5th-instar larval in cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae L, was morphologically investigated with light microscope, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope Six stemmata are on each side of the head. Stemmata V and VI have a Y-shaped sulcus on the surface of their corneal lenses, the others have a columnar shaped process and smooth globular surface. The visual type of stemmata is resembled a single ommatidium of compound eye. The dioptric apparatus are a biconvex shaped cornea and crystalline cone. As a photoreceptor, each stemmata consists of 7 retinular cells arranged into 2 tiers. The first ceil tier of 3 distal retinular cells has formed a V-shaped cup rhabdome and the second cell tier of 4 basal retinular cells has formed a H-shaped fused rhabdome. Each retinular cell filled with pigment granules and contained multivesiclular bodies, coated vesicle and common organelles. The peripheral parts of retinular cells are enveloped by neuroglia cells and retinular cells are surrounded by 3 corneagenous cells. The distal portions of the 3 corneagenous cells contact each other, but the Y-shaped stemmata is separated from each other immediately under the cornea. The 7 axons from each stemma congregate into a bundle and each 7-axon group joins to form a stemmatal nerve, consisting of 42 retinular axons.

  • Acanthamoeba spp. commonly cause Acanthamoeba keratitis which is typically associated with the wear of contact lenses. Therefore, finding an economic, efficient, and safe therapy of natural origin is of outmost importance. This study examined the in vitro lethal potential of ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of Helianthemum lippii (L.) (sun roses) against Acanthamoeba castellanii cysts isolated from patients with amoebic keratitis. Both extracts proved to be potent as regard to their lethal effects on A. castellanii cysts with comparable results to chlorhexidine. The ethyl acetate was more promising with cumulative lethality. It showed a highly significant lethal percentage along the duration of treatment. The analysis of the more potent ethyl acetate extract revealed the presence of 2.96 mg/100 g of total phenolics, 0.289 mg/100 ml of total flavonoids and 37 mg/100 mg of total tannins which highlighted their phytomedicinal role.
