Electrowetting is a versatile tool to handle tiny droplets and forms a backbone of digital microfluidics. Numerical analysis is necessary to fully understand the dynamics of electrowetting, especially in designing electrowetting-based devices, such as liquid lenses and reflective displays. We developed a numerical method to analyze the general contact-line problems, incorporating dynamic contact angle models. The method is based on the conservative level set method to capture the interface of two fluids without loss of mass. We applied the method to the analysis of spreading process of a sessile droplet for step input voltages and oscillation of the droplet for alternating input voltages in electrowetting. The result was compared with experimental data. It is shown that contact line friction significantly affects the contact line motion and the oscillation amplitude. The pinning process of contact line was well represented by including the hysteresis effect in the contact angle models.
Most previous studies on water repellent surfaces using lasers rely on the use of pico- or femtosecond lasers. However, in industrial application, these methods have the disadvantages of high cost and low efficiency. In this study, we implement a hydrophobic surface using a high-power general-purpose diode laser. We have fabricated the microsurface using laser groove processing technology, and we present the correlation of wettability characteristics with space and width. The metal material is stainless steel (SUS 304), and the groove height during laser processing is set to $30{\mu}m$ to evaluate the wettability based on the gap and width of various grooves. Results show that the contact angle of the groove-shaped surface is increased by $40^{\circ}$ or more as compared with the surface without patterning, and the contact angle in the parallel direction is greater than that in the perpendicular direction. Results from contact angle hysteresis measurement experiments show that the groove width has a greater influence on the contact angle history than does the gap between grooves. In addition, the coating reveals that the contact angle can be increased using a chemical method and that the laser grooving process can further improve the wetting properties of the surface.

We describe fabrication of superhydrophobic surface on non-woven fabric (NWF) having nano-hairy structures and a hydrophobic surface coating. Oxygen plasma was irradiated on NWF for nano-texuring and a precursor of HMDSO (Hexamethydisiloxane) was introduced as a surface chemical modification for obtaining superhydrophobicity using 13.56 MHz radio frequency-Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (rf-PECVD). O2 plasma treatment time was varied from 1 min to 60 min at a bias voltage of 400V, which fabricated pillar-like structures with diameter of 30 nm and height of 150 nm on NWF. Subsequently, hydrophobic coating using hexamethyldisiloxane vapor was deposited with 10 nm thickness on NWF substrate at a bias voltage of 400 V. We evaluate superhydrophobicity of the modified NWF with sessile drop using goniometer and high speed camera, in which aspect ratio of nanohairy structures, contact angle and contact angle hysteresis of the surfaces were measured. With the increase of aspect ratio, the wetting angle increased from $103^{\circ}$ to $163^{\circ}$, and the contact angle hysteresis decreased dramatically below $5^{\circ}$. In addition, we had conducted experiment for nucleation and condensation of water via E-SEM. During increasing vapor pressure inside E-SEM from 3.7 Torr to over 6 Torr which is beyond saturation point at $2^{\circ}C$, we observed condensation of water droplet on the superhydropobic NWF. While the condensation of water on oxygen plasma treated NWF (superhydrophilic) occurred easily and rapidly, superhydrophobic NWF which was fabricated by oxygen and HMDSO was hardly wet even under supersaturation condition. From the result of wetting experiment and water condensation via E-SEM, it is confirmed that superhydrophobic NWF shows the grate water repellent abilities.

In this study, the effects of the contact angle (CA) and contact angle hyteresis (CAH) of planar and nano-patterned surfaces on rolling resistance of water droplet were studied. Based on the investigation on the CAH of water droplet on surfaces with various static wettability, it was found that the rolling resistance coefficient of water droplet is highly influenced by the surface pattern as well as CAH. The observed results suggest that the optimal surface patterns should be designed in order to minimize the rolling resistance of water droplet for the practical applications where superhydrophocitiy is required.
The droplet motion on a flat substrate with contact angle hysteresis is studied by solving the equations governing the conservation of mass and momentum. The liquid- gas interface is determined by an level-set method which is based on a sharp-interface representation for accurately imposing the matching or coupling conditions at the interface. The method is modified to treat the dynamic contact angle at the liquid-gas-solid interface. The computations are performed to investigate a droplet impact and merging pattern on a flat substrate to find a optimal condition in a micro-line patterning process. The effects of dynamic contact angles on droplet motion are quantified.

Water repellent surfaces may enhance the condensation by efficiently removing the condensed droplets. However, such surfaces may lose their original performance as they are exposed to external mechanical stresses. In this work, we fabricated spray-coated mechanically robust superhydrophobic surfaces using treated titanium dioxide (Type 1) or silica particles (Type 2). Then we compared the mechanical robustness of such surfaces with the silane-coated superhydrophobic surface and PEEK coated surface using a controlled-sand blasting method. The results show that the spray-coated samples can maintain the same level of the contact angle hysteresis than silane-coated superhydorphobic surface after sand blasting at 2 bar. The spray-coating method was applied to the tube type condenser and the condensation behaviors were observed within the environmental chamber with controlled pressure, humidity and non-condensable gas. Previously-reported droplet jumping was observed in the early stage of the condensation event, but soon the droplet jumping stopped and only dropwise condensation was observed since the condensed droplets were pinned on the cracks at spray-coated surfaces. The static contact angle decreases from $158.0^{\circ}$ to $133.2^{\circ}$, and hysteresis increases from $3.0^{\circ}$ to $23.5^{\circ}$ when active condensation occurs on such surfaces. This work suggests the benefits and limitation of spray-coated superhydrophobic condensers and help develop advanced condensers for practical use.

To investigate the characteristics of water droplet on the gas diffusion layer from both top-view and side-view of the flow channel, a rig test apparatus was designed and fabricated with prism attached plate. This experimental device is used to simulate the growth of single liquid water droplet and its transport process with various air flow velocity and channel height. The contact angle hysteresis and height of water droplet are measured and analyzed. It is found that droplet tends towards to be instable by decreasing channel height, increasing flow velocity or making GDL more hydrophobic. Also, the simplified force balance model matches with experimental data only in a restricted range of operating conditions and shows discrepancy as the air flow velocity and channel height increases.
Anti-adhesion coatings are very important in the processing of adhesive materials such as optical clear adhesive (OCA) films. Choosing the appropriate release coating material for dies and tools can be quite challenging. Hydrophobic surface treatment is usually performed, and its performance is often estimated by the static water contact angle (CA). However, the relationship between the release performance and the CA is not well understood. In this study, the water CAs of surfaces coated with anti-adhesion materials and the peel strengths of the acrylic-based adhesive films are evaluated. STC5 and SUS304 are selected as the base materials. Base materials with different surface roughnesses are produced by hairline finishing, mirror-polishing, and end milling. Four fluoropolymer compounds, including a self-assembled monolayer, are selected to make the base surface hydrophobic. Static, advancing, and receding CAs are mostly increased due to the coating, but the CA hysteresis is found to increase or decrease depending on the coating material. The peel strengths all decreased after coating and are largely dependent on the coating material, with significantly lower values observed for fluorosilane and perfluoropolyether silane coatings. The peel strength is observed to correlate better with the static CA and advancing CA than with the receding CA or hysteresis. However, it is not possible to accurately predict the anti-adhesion performance based on water CA alone, as the peel strengths are not fully proportional to the CAs.

This study numerically investigated statistic and dynamic behaviors of the water droplet on plate with or without various structured-pillars at nano-scale by molecular dynamics simulation. This study considered smooth plate, plate with the rectangular-structured pillar, and the plate with dual-structured pillar under various characteristic energy conditions. The static behavior of water droplet depending on the plate shape, plate surface energy, and the pillar characteristics were examined. After the water droplet reaches its steady state, this study investigated the dynamic behavior of the water droplet by applying a constant force. Finally, this study investigated the static and dynamic behaviors of the water droplet by measuring its contact angle and contact angle hysteresis. As a result, we found that the structure was more hydrophobic.
Recently, aluminum 6061 instead of copper alloy is used for cooling heat exchangers used in the internal combustion of engines due to its economic feasibility, lightweight, and excellent thermal conductivity. In this study, aluminum 6061 alloy was anodized with oxalic acid, phosphoric acid, or chromic acid as an anodizing electrolyte at the same concentration of 0.3 M. After the third anodization, FDTS, a material with low surface energy, was coated to compare hydrophobic properties and anti-icing characteristics. Aluminum was converted into an anodization film after anodization on the surface, which was confirmed through Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Pore distance, interpore distance, anodization film thickness, and solid fraction were measured with a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM). For anti-icing, hydrophobic surfaces were anodized with oxalic acid, phosphoric acid, or chromic acid solution. The sample anodized in oxalic acid had the lowest solid fraction. It had the highest contact angle for water droplets and the lowest contact hysteresis angle. The anti-icing contact angle showed a tendency to decrease for specimens in all solutions.
